Making $35,000 Bonsai Scissors

  • When it comes to Japanese craftsmanship, knives often get all the glory. But in the city of Sakai, where traditional metalwork goes back centuries, there is one man who has built his legacy on something a little different. Master blacksmith Yasuhiro Hirakawa is the only traditional scissor maker left in Japan. Using ancient methods, Hirakawa’s legendary scissors can take four times longer to forge than a traditional knife. To buy one of his creations can set you back a hefty amount-his most expensive pair of scissors cost $35,000. For bonsai craftsmen like Masakazu Yoshikawa, however, it’s a small price to pay for the chance to work with the highest quality tools.

      Nope. There are scissor makers all over the world, especially in Europe. The scissors shown in this video, although very nice, are ABSOLUTELY overpriced in every way. There are other “bespoke” handmade scissors out there for way less. 80$ to 1000$. There is a reason he will be going out of business soon.

      @@vlusky_husky No, I don't have bonsai scissors. I'm 75 and a modelship maker. I have tools, specialized tools where each serves one single situation or purpose.. When I started, I had the same types of tools but very cheap and ordinary, only three or four that served for all the same purposes. When I discovered there were ultra specialized tools and one for each job, I bought them one by one at an inflated price 3 or 4 times higher than the cheap ones (but not 16,000 times the price). I also realized that the real reason I wanted them was hubris, and for the pride and pleasure of 'having them'. Other modelers were saying 'Wow, he's got all those tools...' and I felt I was a better modeler. I wasn't. I just needed more space on my desk to lay them out. Now, to me, scissors are scissors are scissors... If you want a better cut on your bonsai, buy a good quality one and sharpen it once in a while.

      it's not perfection, it's just smoke and mirrors. The buyer is setting the price because they will pay that price. Plenty of other scissors exist, still mostly Japanese brands that are also quite expensive, that will cut as well or better than those made by hand. Just like works of art, if you set the price and they are willing to pay it, then that is the price.

      @@valebliz Having done some woodworking and blacksmithing as a hobby, and reading up on what the Japanese did in both those areas, I totally agree with you. The Japanese refuse to let go of old ways and romanticize them, and some in the west buy into it. E.g. Japanese refused to transition to blast furnaces for hundreds of years after they were available, so they spent hundreds of years doing a lot more labour intensive processes to work steel to produce blades and tools of equal (not better) quality to those coming out of other countries.

    Picasso is sketching at a park. A woman walks by, recognizes him, and begs for her portrait. Somehow, he agrees. A few minutes later, he hands her the sketch. She is elated, excited about how wonderfully it captures the very essence of her character, what beautiful work it is, and asks how much she owes him. “5000 francs, madam,” says Picasso. The woman is incredulous, outraged, and asks how that’s even possible given it only took him 5 minutes. Picasso looks up and, without missing a beat, says: “No, madam, it took me my whole life.”

    IMO, the Japanese make a science out of everything. He probably had to watch his master 10 years before he was allowed to try to make a pair himself. Sure, they are masters, but often I think that the effort is not necessary for a pair of scissors, more just because of tradition.

    • @tribunal009
      @tribunal009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Right? And I think that the Bonsai craftsman probably heard about the scissors from someone else, so while they are actually incredibly well made, he buys them because it’s part of the tradition. I’m sure the $35,000 scissors are amazingly well made, but I highly doubt you can’t find scissors that do just as well for maybe a 10th of the cost.
