RarefoilB [Try4ce] Wow, good catch! All this time later, I can't believe we never noticed! This was the first episode where I appeared on camera, so I was probably just too flustered and screwed it up!
Never realised you covered The NewZealand Story until I saw the thumbnail appear in am image search I was doing for the logo. One of my favourite game growing up. Had it on the Amiga and ZX Spectrum. The Mega Drive version was based on an earlier build of the arcade version, hence the different levels. I see this game as a solid companion to Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands. You did pretty good on your first time on camera. I'm still fluffing my lines. Need one of them autocue things.
I just picked up the arcade PCB of this game to play in my Neo Geo MVS machine! It was pricey, but it's absolutely amazing! Thanks for making this video.
Genesis Game Genie would've come in handy for the import version of this game, it pretty much also serves as a bypass that allows you to play the game without having to butcher your Genesis's cart slot. It's also the latest game to hit the Arcade Archives from Hamster, at least for Japan right now, for PS4 and Switch.
Man, the New Zealand Story was a classic on our home computers! The graphics varied a lot depending on which computer you were playing on; the Spectrum version lacking a bit due to Spectrum’s Palette limitations, and the Amiga port looking beautiful for example. It looks unfortunately bad on the NES, as it’s pretty bad at displaying yellow.
+davidevoid [Try4ce] Oh no, you watched the first video where I appeared on camera! Haha, yeah, I get the Tom Hanks comparison all the time. I don't really hear it myself, but hey I guess I'll take it!
+My Life in Gaming Going through all the videos now, you guys have covered some great games and subjects. Really like the technical videos and reviews... subscribed!
The Wii had a Kiwi game based on the same series it seems. Ivy the Kiwi? Havent played it yet myself, but it could be the follow up you were looking for.
+Thumbstick Gamer [Try4ce] I haven't played it either, though it's not a followup. Ivy the Kiwi? was made by Yuji Naka of Sonic fame, and has totally different gameplay. I have always been intrigued by it, though. I like the concept behind it, but it does look like it could be fiddly and repetitive.
I have seen it show up from time to time on many Wii hidden gem videos. I'd launch it tonight to get a feel for it, if I wasn't entranced in Earthbound at the moment.
The only things I dislike about the NES version are the HORRID color schemes which include spikes that are easy to miss because they don’t stand out, and RIDICULOUS enemy spawning that appear literally right in front of you. Aside from that, this is definitely a fun, challenging game.
I wish the 'My Life In Gaming' crew would come to California Extreme, the largest Arcade game and Pinball expo in America. It's the largest collection of arcage games I have ever seen, and as a 2nd-4th generation Console-aholic, seeing in person the Arcade roots to so much of my Console-centric childhood. At CA Extreme I met Arcade game programers frome Namco, Capcom, Al Alcorn of Atari legend, everyone from Taito was there in a panel. It would be great for you guys to speak at the expo, or have a booth at least! Check out Dubba-you Dubba-you Dubba-you .caextreme.org/
The NewZealand Story is a great game, perhaps a bit racist and not exactly an accurate description of my home country. The vehicles you refer to are called balloons in the PAL manual. Yes, we have balloons in the shape of sheeps heads that we use instead of cars and aeroplanes, it's just easier. No, we don't throw boomerangs here, that's our cousins across the ditch. My biggest beef with the game is the music grates on your nerves after the 2nd or 3rd stage, and the level design doesn't change much, at least for how much of the game I've actually seen. There's lots of yellow in the NES version, which gets very old very quickly. Quirky game though, still quite fun. One of my favourite NES games that I own. (The NES wasn't popular here at all, so it's also one of the ONLY NES games I own.)
Wow! The NES version looks like a high rez ZX Spectrum port, ouch! Try the Master System version, much superior and almost as good as the arcade version. 👍 Are you aware there was a spin-off game?
Awesome game collection at the 30 second mark!
I loved Kiwi Kraze!
I'd love My Life In Gaming to do a showcase on Taito, Capcom, Sega Collections (etc, etc) based on the accuracy of the emulation.
Great review Try. I am enjoying going back to some of the older videos and rewatching them.
I looked on Gamefaqs and the NES version was also released in Europe and Australia by Ocean.
+weirdproq1 True just as The NewZealand Story without the crappy US box art.

I'm watching on mobile, so I've probably missed a correcting annotation, but you really meant 1988, right?

was gunna say game looks shit for a 98 release lol
Wooo a good game. /wave Marc. Awesome you got on camera!

I wonder if Marc is aware there was a spin-off game?
Nice review. I'd never heard of this game, and now you've piqued my interest.

Nice review. Like your style and voice. Subscribed!

Well at least you can now play Panamora Cotton and not go straight to hell.
Why would you regret modding your Genesis to fit Mega Drive carts? Now you can play all of our Mega Drive games!

Totally my type of game. Thanks for sharing

I remember the nes version growing up in new zealand under the title 'The New Zealand Story' so it wasn't only released in north america
This just made my want list.
Just discovered your channel and loving the videos. I realised that you sound like Tom Hanks, now I cannot not hear Tom Hanks! (Not a bad thing!)

What game is that at 7:51?
Battletoads
Today I learned The New Zealand Story is obscure
Can anyone comment on the PC Engine port of this game? Are the levels that different? Does it look or play any better or worse?
Should I buy this in the box?

why wouldn't you just use a cheap Game Genie as a pass-through? =[

NES didn't have much of a yellow palette . What is the spin-off game you are referring to?
@@goatbone Liquid Kids.
Why do you say Vehicle like that?
Oh you live in Ohio that’s where I live It’s cold I have a fellow Highwind on TH-cam
Absolutely it is your nostalgia. The nes version sucked
From Ohio you say? Nobody here says vee-hicle.
[Try4ce] I only lived there for 3 years.
