Oh man, I absolutely love Kenshi. The game was made by one guy for most of it and said guy isn't an artist. Not to mention he made the engine himself. Also, it has some of the best worldbuilding I've seen in my opinion.

If i had to guess i would say that the laser beams are caused by low-orbiting mirror satelites that were used to gather more solar power or something. They would have been useful before the apocalypse but are now uncontrolled and shoot beams rampantly during the day.
Comments by skeleton characters imply that the crashed space station in the Eye region is of the same type of the one above Venge. Also Venge has control towers, implying it was a spaceport of some sort, so it was probably an orbital weapons platform that got activated during the apocalypse and no one survived to turn it off.
It was an orbital weapon that's powered via the Sun, hence why Venge is ONLY safe when you physically see the Sun is gone. And Skeletons speak about these things not very nicely, so the purpose of them was definitely to kill

You'd think that it's a silly joke, but no. Sseth is bitter and his sick sense of humor is the result of trauma.

war in kenshi is a mess.....the aftermath is so realistic....my 200 characters died, lost, limbs, or in coma. The logistic to carry the wounded was a few real life hours due to being deep in hostile territory with those annoying bug from startroopers and ambush from various factions. The deads were stripped naked and was forced to buried in the desert roamed by those mantis bug creatures. It was a great fun
Kenshi is honestly incredible and though the MANY bugs and technical issues are sorta charming when taken in context, they are working on Kenshi 2 now with a MUCH bigger budget and way better graphical fidelity. It's going to be glorious.

This game was pretty easy once I memorized the local stores' sneak routes, stole everything in town, and had enough resources to build a full base with farms, guards and pretty high level weapons/gear for 20 people. (Used some mods to uncap some values and make multi base/party exploring easier to manage.) about 50 hours in, tho I did spend 10 learning all the ins and outs to figure out what was even going on.

Fun fact. There's so much slavery in the United Cities, being against it is equal to terrorism. There's some implication that they can't grow enough food to feed everyone and slavery is the answer to the problem (and a few other problems). Even the anti-slavers can't be considered fully good, since they want to end slavery but don't really have any plans dealing with overthrowing the entire system the country is dependant on for food or the resulting famine. They have no plans for the transitional period, which means as many will probably die in the chaos under them as die in slavery and hunger now. This is how much the world sucks.

Late reply but YES! There is a place that can be considered Area 51 equivalent. One faction has a base where it stores all tech pieces they consider heretical (you need it for high level research).
my only issue with this game is the map is separated into parts, so when you step into another territory, the game loads it, and sometimes it takes 45 seconds for me.
Kenshi is such an awesome game. I put around 200 hours into it, and it never got stale for me. Also, while the graphics are pretty ugly, the world itself can be quite beautiful.

You won't exactly find many people defending its writing or roleplaying, but its atmosphere, exploration, & dungeon crawling are *way* better than New Vegas'. Kenshi is getting a sequel in the unreal engine, it started development not to long ago so it's gonna be a minute but I can't wait for it to be here.
Kenshi is basically perfect. The only glaring problem is that traveling is a giant pain in the ass since terrain takes so long to load.
