Listen also to "Tattoo". Thats another great song from this reunion session. This song and Tattoo are up there with some of the best work they did with Dave on vocals.
If I could have three wishes, one would be for Van Halen and Dave to have held it together when they did this in 1996. THAT was the right moment to re-form. They would have DESTROYED had they done that instead of Gary. The mind weeps at what could have been.

@@mattblatchley2061 Yep. I'm glad they pulled it together later. But, man! To have done it when they were still young and with Mike... I love Ed and Al. I do. In the truest sense of the word. But, it still breaks the heart. Ed may very well not have gone through those "dark years" had they all kept it together during that time. Maybe.
Yup, I honestly feel this is the biggest “what if?” in the whole band’s history. There was real potential to make a truly incredible album (assuming every song was as good as the two on the Greatest Hits album).
I agree too. Van halen was Van Halen with David Lee Roth.They made the best music together .They had two great songs in 1996, when this first was played. It is a shame they could not put their differences behind them

When Van Halen was doing a greatest hits album, which Sammy didn’t want to because he believed a band that is over does that kind of album, Edward wanted to include two new songs with Dave as a kind of a throwback to the Dave era. This was the end of the Sammy era and when this tune hit it was the first NEW TUNE for Van Halen and MTV blew it up! The band appeared together for the first time with Dave and MTV announced it as the RETURN and that kinda pissed Edward off because it wasn’t. That’s when he gay with Gary and recorded VHIII. It’s a great tune but Edward said in an interview that he didn’t think Dave could hit those notes live.
At Dave’s peak he had a 5 octave range. From a whistle register to the very low baritone notes.

"Respect the wind" from the Twister soundtrack sounds similar at the end. It's an instrumental with Alex on the keyboard and Eddie on guitar. It's definitely worth listening to

I love this tune...very underrated.This greatest hits album came out in 1996 and contributed a lot to Sammy Hagar's departure from the band.The record company proposed a greatest hits with both Roth and Hagar tunes and Hagar was against it and ultimately quit the band.So they called up Dave to record two new songs for the album and that was the beginning of the short lived Roth/Van Halen reunion.Then at the 1996 MTV awards Roth appeared with the band but Eddie was not pleased with how Roth was acting so the reunion was called off with Roth.Then they hired Gary Cherone to be the new singer but that failed and he was let go.In 2004 Hagar reunited for a tour that was a disaster because Eddie was drinking excessively and band relations were bad.In 2007 Eddie cleaned up and reunited with Roth until Eddie's passing in 2020.
This was Edward's Magnum Opus.

To everyone out there, let’s get MUGSY to react to the LARGO MARYLAND PRO SHOT LIVE 1982. It’s the best show of them on the internet bar none. It’s all we have right now of them in their prime and at their peak.
US Festival May 1983
@@NoNotMe0000 No. I love the US festival for what it is. It’s a fun show to watch because of the crowd. There is a great aura in the air, and it’s a great example of what it was like to be a part of their show, but they were not at their best that night. The tour was already over. They were tired. They had to find Dave in the jungle and assemble fast. Alex didn’t have his drum kit from the tour. He had to have a new kit made for that show and it was the only time it was ever used. They partied hard before the show with the record breaking 1.5 million dollar paycheck they received at the time. They were smashed. They were wrecked way beyond their normal intake (especially Dave, he’s all over the place, more than the usual) and the show suffered for it. They weren’t cohesive. Watch LARGO MARYLAND PRO SHOT specifically. The camera work is superior. It’s a superior performance by the band as a unit. Dave is at his best, and it sounds fantastic. It’s the same tour, with a couple different songs in the set list.

I think this was after Sammy left and they were trying to put together a band with Dave I think they recorded a couple tunes and Dave wigged out again so the kill the reunion and formed with Gary for Van Halen 3 then later put it together for different kinda truth
They say Dave has a four octave range, from that baritone, to that high scream.

Sammy got mad when he heard they were going this , said it seemed like money grab. There came drift and dav came back for tgis and Can't Get This Stuff No More song. Dave and,Eddie still did not get along even at this time. Record company said either Dave or Sammy and Sammy was on his own after this so Dave came back.
Most modern songs are compressed, which buries the vocals and drums for the sake of being louder. There is a limit of how loud you can master a song. All of the instruments play at the same volume, no dynamics.
I think David Lee Roth came back and made their best song ever.
Yeah, they pushed Dave's vocal to the back. Alot of the songs on this greatest hits cd were remastered to featur the guitar. 😩
This was recorded for a greatest hits album after Sammy left. It came out in 1996. Dave already lost a lot of his vocal abilities by then. Nice to hear Michael Anthony's voice though.
