  • More amazing video of Sarikei and her newborn baby Daughter Orangutan and Older Son Tombol at Chester Zoo
In this video we get adorable close up views of proud mother Sarikei affectionately cradling feeding her baby
The baby hunts around a little at first and cant quite latch on to mums teat and so relaxed, experienced mother Orangutan Sarikei helps her by putting her onto the other side, were we see her feeding contently
In this video we get enough close up footage to be able to identify the gender of Sarikeis newborn - a girl!
At the time of uploading this video Chester Zoo have yet to officially announce the baby's gender and name
Meanwhile Tombol - who always stays close to his mother and new baby sister is getting quite hungry himself and starts banging on the doors impatiently letting the keepers know he is ready for his afternoon scatter feed - which he does get shortly after this video was recorded - videos to follow soon
This animal footage is of the new 14 day old baby orangutan - a critically recently born endangered Bornean Orangutan Chester Zoo
lets us know in the comments if there has been a baby orangutan born recently at a zoo or wildlife reserve local to you
and what is your favourite great apes zoo to visit?
The newborn Bornean baby orangutan featured in this video is only 14 days old and was born early on 31st August 2023 to Mother Sarikei and Father Willie
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo
    Critically endangered newborn baby orangutan
Bornean Orangutans are critically endangered and are nearing extinction in the wild, which makes every zoo orangutan birth incredibly special and important and for the survival of these magnificent great apes
    Chester Zoo Baby Orangutan
Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed
Congratulations to Chester Zoo on the birth of the new baby orangutan from @apetracker

Sareiki is such a good Mom, she is so gentle, and patient. You can tell she's experienced when she uses her foot to prop the baby up while feeding so she can pick at whatever percieved blemish she has found, LOL!!!❤❤❤😂😂😂

Jingga and Jarang have been conspicuously absent from this channel for a while now. Hope Jarang is still alive.

Wow you guys have so much expertise on the welfare of wild animals raised in captivity . Forget education and training all you need do is to watch a 5 minute edited video and behold: We’re all experts on primate behavior!
Seriously guys give them a break the handlers know what they’re doing.

Jingga just celebrated🎉 her 14th birthday, and from what I have read and seen she and the baby are doing well. (So, yes he is still alive and doing well at Blackpool Zoo.)

I guess that's one way to deal with a baby that has to pee.

This is so sad to watch. It's so sad that this lovely mama is having to raise her baby in this concrete prison. She is nothing more than a baby mill for this zoo. It is heartbreaking to see her sit on the ground feeding her baby while in the wild it's rare for an orangutan to be on the ground where it's dangerous. I am not faulting the content creator for making this video, but I find it horrendous that a zoo would imprison perfect releasable animals.
