- A new baby Orangutan at Chester Zoo for mum Sarikei and dad Willie
In this video we get adorable close up animal footage of the new 4 day old baby orangutan - a critically endangered Bornean Orangutan
The baby is seen sleeping with his / her mother Sarikei in a hammock
Later in the video Sarikeis older son Tombol, who until recently had his mother to himself! climbs up a very high pole where his mother and baby sibling are resting, and seems to be bringing a blanket to them to shade themselves from the midday sun
Or does Sarakei just take it off him ? - it's hard to tell but we like the first scenario the best!

The newborn Bornean baby orangutan featured in this video is only 4 few days old and was born early on 31st August 2023 to Mother Sarikei and Father Willie
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo
At the time of recording this video Chester Zoo had announced the birth only days earlier and had yet to reveal the name and gender of the critically endangered newborn baby orangutan
Chester Zoo Baby Orangutan
Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed

I agree, she did thank him. On his part the little guy is trying to be useful to mom, but he also doesn't know quite what to do with himself without her holding him all the time like she used to before baby came....

I think Tombol gave the blanket to his mother. She didn't snatch it, nor did Tombol try and hang onto it. Sarikei seems so relaxed with her baby. I hope her older son gets some motherly attention, too. He is still young. Lovely video.

It really did look like he had climbed up to bring the blanket for his mum and newborn sibling, if so what an amazing gesture for such a young Orangutan. Every time I watch them they do something to amaze me. 👍
Momma held Tombol’s hand for a minute too. She looks like a perfect momma. Maybe she coulda shared some shade with the babe at the end though, lol. Beautiful video. Thank you. ❤

Looked to me like the child brought the blanket because he was using it and wanted to visit, but that he completely understood mom and baby needing it more & easily surrendered it to mom. Then she thanked him by leaving blanket up a bit for him to still see her and baby before he left and sheseemed to take his hand with..thanks, I love you. AT least this is my interpretation

Saraiki is a wonderful mother. She allowed her son some time to see the baby, but moved him along when it was time.
I love that these orangutans feel safe enough to give birth more frequently than in the wild. Always a happy occurrence and a boost to this critically endangered species numbers. ❤ 🦧
Animals make my life worth living, for myself, my children and the planet. They teach us everything we need to know about how to behave, live subsistence lifestyles, take care of one another, have empathy and compassion. My fish take better care of one another than most human beings do. Lessons we can all learn from, every single day.

It looked liked she was trying to get his hand so he maybe could look at the baby. I love the way they all interact and the moms are wonderful to there babies. I watch alot if the monkey channels and some of those other monkeys are just mean to there babies.

It's amazing when you realize that this being has so much in common with human beings. Levels of compassion and love love that even some humans don't possess. That child must have an amazingly beautiful mother who taught him to be considerate and compassionate enough that he was inspired to bring her and the baby a blanket

I believe he brought it to his mom and after she took it she cover herself and the baby then she lifted it up for a good amount of time so that he could see his sibling. Then she moved him along saying he had seen the baby for long enough.❤'

Mom's 40 years old, not 56! At age 56, if she became a mother, it would be irresponsible of the zoo because she probably wouldn't have had time to raise him. The baby is wonderful, and the mother always keeps it close to the breast and he eats often, so he is strong and well-nourished. She went to the hammock to be alone, and the son misses his mom and is curious about the baby. I hope mom takes time for her son, too, because he still needs it. Beautiful view of caring mom with new baby.
I think you are confused. This is sarikei she is the mother of the baby she is 40 years old. Her mother Martha also lives at this zoo and she is 58 years old

@@ApeTracker1 When I saw that mom was 56 years old, I got scared and checked how old she really was! Luckily, it's a mistake. Yes, 56 years is a wonderful age for an orangutan, and I wish her to become the record holder for the life expectancy of this species. Thank you for the film with a caring mom and a wonderful baby.
Tombol is pretty smart, the sack was a distraction so he could see the baby. Mom was on to him though and said, ok thx for the cover now go about your business and get away from the baby! Shout out to your equipment AT, the long range lens give the most clear and up close look I've seen from a freelancer, the video of Lope was spectacular!! 😎
