    I visited South Korea in May and it was completely amazing! Fell in love with it and it's so true how safe you feel there. I was never concerned about North Korea before I went and I feel even less concerned about them now that I've been to South Korea. I agree with the one girl in the video, North Korea has to know that if they tried to start anything the whole world would fight back. Doesn't seem worth it.

      Ole Tim Herr And what? Your claim was based on who to blame. Those two US military officers are who decided the location of the division, to split the country in two but keep the capital Seoul under American control, and it was done using only a National Geographic map. All that happened next was it was telegrammed to the Soviet Union and they accepted it. No experts on Korea and its population were consulted.

      Most people I know here, in Poland, whenever someone just says 'Korea' think about South. It's necessary to add 'North' to make people realise they're not supposed to think about South. Every single Korean Language handbook I've seen, named only 'Korean Language' teaches only Southern dialect. I thought some may find it interesting. Also I think Polish people generally like (THE) Koreans a lot :)

      Hello, CAmpingCAr Joa, are you think of north koreans like they are some other nation or you think of them like they are the same people as you are, but under totalitarian control?

    • @hansolkim5837
      @hansolkim5837 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @axl kochubey Hi I know this wasn't directed at me, but to give my opinion I think most young people think of North Koreans as a different people. South Koreans even tend to think of South Koreans living abroad as a different people, really.
      For older people it's visibly different though. Back in 2006 (before the North went totally berserk but still kind of weird) when there were rumors that North Korea had nuclear weapons, I clearly remember my parents saying approvingly "If America and China has nuclear bombs 'we' should have them also." They've changed their thoughts now obviously, but that's something nobody born after 1990 would say.

      translation) I'm sick of these non-Koreans spouting "Why do they let the North Korean people starve? Why don't SK help out NK?".
      It's so annoying to see these comments.
      We already helped NK many times. We sent rice and money.
      But what can we do when Kim Jong-un taking away the money for missile development and military expenses?
      Must we send money to those who aim missiles at us?
      It's no difference from providing military expenses for NK.
      Why do they keep asking for more help?

    I am Korean and I definitely agree with their opinion. Some of people here say they are ignorant but if you are South Korean citizen in your 20s, suffering from massive unemployment, your stance would also likely to be the same as girls above. Even though South Koreans try to help North Koreans with food and water, those financial aid and support all goes through North Korean central distribution system which means its highly unlikely that it will get to them anyways. How would South Koreans suppose to help North Koreans when the communist party blocks them? Secondly, would you want to devote your young lifetime to rebuild your own country? Do you think you are that nationalistic and patriotic to suffer all your life time which you can enjoy in stable, capitalist society? Would you be able to cope with pressure of merging capitalist and communist citizens together in that small peninsula? Have a think about it. What you speak online is easier than what you actually need to go through.

      Aden Knight that is so true, It's easy to say that to foreigner, Help your country and others and blablabla but Who really want to spend the rest of your life fighting for others when you have a family waiting for you at home and you need to provide for them, That is the same case with the hungry kids in Africa, Everybody ignore the situation because most people already struggle everyday to provide for their family.

    I think its more ethical to want reunification as a South Korean to help the poor citizens who are living poorly in North, even if it hurts Sourh, its nowhere near as much as North Korean citizens have suffered.

    • @minju7624
      @minju7624 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      luvlycrazycooki3 I disagree with you and I have good reasons. The reunification would be a lot of money and if you look at Vietnam after the Vietnam war they have spent a ton of money for the reunification and right now Vietnam is a very poor country. If SK does do the reunification it would be the same as Vietnam and we do not want that. It would just mean suffering like the NK and the SK would be running out of money which could lead to debt to the country. Unless Nk is willing to have peace both countries can have peaceful lives. Call me selfish but I wouldn't say making both country fail instead of one is worth it.

      @hikazayanikushi9086 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      True, but if we talk about the costs it will take... there are a lot of things that would make SK suffer. Although a reunification would be nice. I mean.. the infrastructures, the foods. The gap is just too big now, although possible I guess, let's just go with the flow for now.
      A lot of NK's are still "brainwashed" so it wouldn't be a good matter if they just found everything was a lie, they would think oh the enemy's fooling us and stuff.

    I know that South Korea is the safest country in the world. I've lived there.
    But about North Korea, you guys feel safe because over 500,000 South Korean soldiers are protecting your country day and night. Saying "What are they thinking? Then I forget about it." "If they shoot some missiles or whatever, the rest of the world will know." is not helping them. I have many Korean friends who discharged from the army, they long for the unification of Korea. They have elaborate plans for the future of Korea, pretty young and brave too. You guys should have interviewed people like them.

    I respect and am very appreciative of the Asian Boss channel for sharing information and helping to raise global awareness regarding the situation of North Korea. With that said, especially after hearing the unreal stories of multiple defectors who managed to escape the hell of North Korea on this same channel, watching this made me feel sick and disgusted, which takes nothing away from the fact that this video was very much needed and relevant. Again, thanks to the channel for that.
    As someone from a completely different culture, I was appalled by the opinions shared in the video, many of which I found revealing of selfishness, lack of awareness, and of the fact that these young South Koreans appear to be shockingly deprived of empathy, in spite of the fact that their actual brothers and sisters are fighting to survive through one of the most atrocious chapters in the history of humanity as we speak. Meanwhile, not a single interviewee had the decency to verbalize or at least acknowledge that this large scale crime against humanity is happening right at their doorstep. I understand that the interviewees were answering the questions asked but still, not hearing a word from most of them showing they can put themselves in the shoes of the people of the north is a little tough to stomach.
    It's one thing for someone to state themselves as an individual witnessing a complicated situation that they don't know how to fix, but it's another to present yourself as a South Korean citizen and to flat out state that the thought of a reunification isn't something to at least want to tend towards just because of how it might affect South Korea economically, as if it was the rational opinion of a well balanced human being. I thought most of the opinions shared in this video to be rather reprehensible and shameful not just for the South Korean people, but for humanity as a whole. I understand the Korean youth is faced with with an extremely difficult burden to carry and that the temptation of just ignoring the problem is massive, but it doesn't make it any less horrible.

    • @user-fd5ny1gx5c

      Why are the north people our brothers and sisters? Sure, all of us feel extremely bad for some innocent North people.. But they are no more different then people in pain at the other side of the world. I'm not saying they should be ignored, that I don't want to help them, but they aren't our brothers and sisters.. We do want to help them, but our incompetent president giving more and more to the North while they consider us a laughing matter doesn't exactly make our hearts flutter. And what did North Korea ever do for us? So far, all we got was threats and insults. As a little example, our president's speech was called a matter that a boiled ox head would laugh(which sounds much worse, rather like a curse when translated into Korean) by the north's government. AND we heard that although our government gives subsidies to the North every year. And it's not like we don't need the money.
      And by economic problems.. I don't know about you, but for us, that's not something to take lightly. we may have to pay 28,427,672,956 dollars for 30 years, or 8,385,744,235 for 45 years. And that's estimated by Germany's situation. As for them, East Germany and South germany didn't have much difference in their economic situations, AND the South had to pay THAT much. Naturally, People had to pay so much taxes.. But what about us? Unlike Germany, South Korea's economic power is 22 times better than North Korea, and it's not like South Korea's economic power is strong. It's quite possible North and South's Unification will cause astronomical costs. For normal or poor people, this will mean complete hell. How can we live?? People who aren't rich die out trying to help them. I don't care if this sounds selfish, It's a fact.
      It doesn't help that we're all extremely afraid and worried that we might be taken over by communism in the process of our unification, too.

      @@user-fd5ny1gx5c I am very appreciative of your response and your perspective is perfectly sound. To my defense what I will say is that in the way that i was framing my opinion, and this is my mistake for not having said it explicitly, i was implying that in the event where the government of the north by some sort of miracle managed to get dismantled I would have hoped that at least the people from the south would have wanted to include them, including specifically with financial contributions, but i realize now how abstract and almost irrelevant my point was...

      @@user-fd5ny1gx5c They wrote "brothers and sisters" because both South Koreans and North Koreans are closely related, and if you feel nothing from seeing your close ethnic group dying, then you lack empathy.
      You contradict yourself saying, "We do want to help them," then writing a whole paragraph explaining your selfish reasons of why you do not want to help them.
      North Koreans are brain-washed and controlled, and Kim Jong-Un runs everything there. I do not know why you say, "they consider us a laughing matter" and "what did North Korea do for us?" as if the people of North Korea have the power to do or be anything other than what their government desires.
      No one takes economic problems lightly, but to choose comfort over saving your close brothers and sisters is disgusting and selfish.

    It's so sad that no one seems to care about human rights issues in North Korea...I mean there are numerous people oppressed, tortured, and massacred under such cruel dictatorship. I think that's the biggest reason why South Korea should be reunified with North Korea. I can't believe most people in this video simply talk about how reunification might affect the economy. I'm a Korean living in the States and even here I've noticed that the people who actually care about saving or somehow helping North Korean people are mostly Korean Americans and not South Koreans from Korea.

I'm simply disappointed in the fact that no one in this interview is even mentioning the terrible human rights issues in the North or the fact that South Korea and the rest of the world should strive to bring humanity back to North Korea. Yes, I am for reunification because of these reasons, but if there is a way to save the oppressed people in North Korea without reunification, I would also consider that as a possible solution.

      Actually they want unification. If Korea is unified, that means US can put their troops on the doorstep of China. China would be worried because you'd literally have a rival's army next to you. Thats why China keeps NK alive, so US can't get near them.

    • @ClaytonJones03
      @ClaytonJones03 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a bit of an unnecessary worry on the part of the Chinese, and at this point, I'm not sure they're all that worried anymore. There is really no need for China to use NK as a buffer state anymore, as the Norks have proven themselves to be parasitic and act like a tantrum-throwing child, with China being left to clean up the mess repeatedly.
      That said...
      I think that, at this point, China would also not mind unification, but probably with some stipulations. China and South Korea already have diplomatic ties and a robust economic relationship, despite South Korea's (accurate) assessment that China is often complicit with the North, even after some serious provocations like the YP-do attack.

    I think it's a pretty sad perspective considering the suffering that is happening north of the border. Reunification would not be easy, economically or socially but it doesn't have to happen like the way the two Germanies were united (basically overnight with the West swallowing up the East), "one korea two systems" could be maintained for some time while the North catches up with South Korean investment and World assistance. The long term goal must be that all people on the Korean Peninsula should be free.

    • @lucone2937

      When Germany reunited in 1990, West Germany needed to do lots of investments to East Germany to make it possible. Basically the Federal Republic of Germany got 5 new Eastern states and the city of Berlin was reunited as well. If the reunification of Korea happens, it means that South Korea needs to do lots of investments just because there is a big gap in the standard of living and North Koreans haven't used to live in an open democratic society.

    For reunification to happen, the young NK generation has to stand up and be the change even though it might seem impossible. Also, this vid makes me appreciate that I've grown up in a reunified Germany. I remember my parents saying that people in the army said they will not shoot their protesting neighbors, friends and fellow residents if they are told to do so. Most soldiers wouldn't do that.

    When I meet people from other country who don't know about and are not interested in korea that much, the first question they are going to say is if I am from North or South Korea. The following question after I answer I am absolutely from South is if your country is safe . We are so good and fine. I can agree with some interviewees on the video. There are kind of usual routine beyond description which only people in the situation go through. We believe we have quite good weapons to defend and attack them on alert. What we are really afraid of is the head.

    당장의 부담은 고스란히 현세대 국민들이 떠맡아야 하니까. 이기적이 될 수밖에.
    남북한은 남북베트남이나 동서독일과는 차원이 다른 경제수준과 사회 격차를 가지고 있는데다가 지금도 독일이 통일후유증을 제대로 앓고 있는것을 보면 정말 진지하게 대한민국이 버텨낼 수 있는지조차 예상하기 어려움.
    그래도 북한에 이변이 생기고 하면 생각지도 못한 뜻밖의 통일이 순식간에 현실로 다가오겠죠. 당장은 아니더라도.
    어쨌든 남북한이 영원히 따로살게 아닌 이상은 통일은 피할 수 없는 숙명이고, 그 때가 오면 최소한 몇십년, 몇백년은 잡고 가능한 한 천천히 과정을 밟아서 부작용이나 문제를 최소화하는게 최선일 거라고 생각함.

    특이한 경우를 제외하고, 일반 여성을 포함한 특히 청소년들은 이 부분의 심각성에 대해 불감증을 보이기도 합니다. 그들이 학습하고 인지 할 수 있는 수준은 첫번째로 국사를 배움에 있어서 현 우리나라의 상태에 하나의 지식 수준으로 접하는 것이고 미디어나 다큐정도로 어쩌다 추가적 정보를 얻는 경우를 제외하고 피부로 와닿기에는 힘들죠. 그렇기 때문에 이분들이 올바르게 자각하지 못하고 있다고 해서 그들을 욕하거나 잣대로 편견을 갖는 것은 정당치 못하다고 생각합니다. 직접 경험하지 않으면 알 수 없죠. 문서로 기록되든 입에서 입으로 옮겨지든, 어림짐작과 막연한 추측은 가능하지만 그것이 피부로 와닿고 사고와 행동을 바꿀 수 있는 영향력이 있다고는 생각하지 않습니다. 대한민국 남성이라면 국방의 의무를 다해야 하며, 계기와 시작은 각각다르고 개인이 가지고 있는 스토리도 서로 다르지만 정작 그곳에 들어가 배우고 인지하게 되는 방향과 가지는 사고는 하나로 이어집니다. 그래서 한 나라에 군대가 끼치는 영향과 중요성, 그리고 이 사실이 국가기반에 어떤 의미를 가지고 있는지 정확하게 이해 할 수 있습니다. 그들이 진정한 군인이고, 감사해야되는 대상이죠. 통일은 이루어져야 합니다. 그러나 이 부분은 매우 민감한 부분이며, 북한 주민으로써 세뇌를 당해 육체적 정신적으로 고통받는 도저히 인권을 누릴 수 없는 피해자들의 위치도 함께 고민하며 풀어나갈 수 있도록 방안을 제시해야되죠. 그러기 위해선 영토의 통일과 국가의 통일이 있기 전, 그들에게 역사를 바로 볼 수 있고, 허와 실의 뚜렷한 구분과 스스로 판단하고 자각 할 수 있게 학습 할 수 있는 권리도 누리도록 기회를 주어야 합니다.
    사실 제목을 보고 기대하며 들어왔는데, 영상을 보고 많이 실망했습니다. 이건 의도적인 인터뷰로 밖에 보이지 않습니다. 마치 한국의 청년들은 북한의 존재에 대해 무관심하고 대책없고 망상에 쩌들어 살고 있는 그런 사람들이고 그들의 편견과 같이 불쌍한 민족이라고 각인시키려는 것 같아요. 인터뷰를 했어야 하는 대상은 남녀 학생, 20대의 여성과 군필자 남성을 대상으로 실시되었어야 합니다. 세대에 따른 극명한 차이점을 보이고 싶었다면, 50~60대 고령자분들도 인터뷰에 참여시켰으면 좋았을 겁니다. 아시안보스가 이 사실을 간과했을리가 없다고 판단하고 이 영상은 특정 의도로 제작되었다고 보겠습니다.

      Reunification would be disastrous though. South Korean life would be flipped on its back. It's like forcing two completely different time periods together and hoping for the best. North Korea would stunt South Korea's growth. They should help North Korea without uniting, it isn't necessary. Families can see each other without taking that risky step.

      People living in an recluse country ruled by a totalitarian regime which demands from them not only absolute obedience but also constant PRAISE for the "great leader", naturally feel depressed to say the least. They are afraid of the regime more than anything else I think. And no matter how ignorant the regime tries to keep them, they are not stupid. They have to pretent of course that thanks to the "great leader" they live the perfect lives, or there might be a hell to pay if they do not, but they know and secretely they crave the freedom they can't have.

      theo9952 That's exactly the point Theo. What I'm trying to saying is that the South Koreans in the video seems to have no empathy (or rather, also not allowed to express it) towards the people being opressed in the north. The girl even says that if the segregation ended they would be losing a lot.

      Well, some people who are better off, may feel this way for the less fortunate. But I think that many others are not of the same opinion. There was also negative sentiment for East Germans after the fall of the Berlin wall but now they have an East German prime minister in the united Germany. Things are not always what they seem to be.
      Communism was supposed to lead to a happier, more humane society when it was envisioned at first. Sadly, it did not, I very much regret to have to say.

    As a reserve force and South Korean, many South Korean whose age is teenages and early 20s don't think seriously about North Korea.
    Why they don't care about it is that national army try hard to prevent provocation and defend the border 24/7. When North Korea tried to fire the missile, although citizen didn't care about it, national armies were already in emergency situation.
    So I believe national army and don't need to care much about North Korea and related provocation as citizen
    * FYI
    - North Korea have used their weapon (missile, nuclear experiment) as key of negotiation. NK want to take advantageous position by the weapon. So almost of people in South Korea don't care seriously about it.
    - This video just interviewed young people (maybe under 25), so men at the video don't take compulsory military service. Moreover, if women have friend and co-workers who are in or completed military service, they will answer differently, not same with women in video. If Asian Boss interview people whose age over 25, they give absolutely another answer. (I'm 28)

    I'm not Korean, so I'll lead by saying I can't ever truly speak on this issue. I will say though that my heart goes out to all the North Korean citizens living under an awful regime. I also feel for the families forever divided. I'd like to think if I were in a Korean's shoes I'd yearn for a unified country if not for myself then for the sake of all the people North of the divide. A unification is easier said than done though. Realistically, even if powerful leaders were taken down, it would take time, an incredible amount of money, and patience for two drastically different cultures to mesh again. It's just so sad to me that there ever was a divide.

It can be difficult to meet new people, and it can be the feeling of feeling uncomfortable. But if Koreans should mix and talk to each other, many releations and new views can come, there could be a good and healthy exchange for both sides.
