    Can I ask you a question?
    Why do people spin knives or swords?
    I'm just really curious

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a couple of reasons, for one, if you give it enough time anyone with a sword in their hand will spin it around. Some people want to look cool.
      ------------------------------------BUT--------------------------------------
      Spinning swords is a very useful warmup to develop flexibility in the wrists, elbows, and shoulders. The complicated actions help increase coordination, and on a combat side the spin helps you recover your sword from a block, parry or ricochet. Lastly, it teaches you spacial awareness and how not to hit yourself with your own weapon.
      I hope that helps answer your question!

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @JuicyMusicprod Realistically, no. It is better to keep the sword in control during attack/defense, and at the ready when not engaged with an opponent. Spinning can become predictable and reveal openenings for your opponent to attack.
      Unless you truly outclass your opponent, or you're sure you can scare them off before the fight with something fancy, it's best to keep the spinning to the training aspects like forms and drills.

      Thanks! The specific sword I use in this video is my teacher's and was probably purchased back in the late 80s/early 90s so I can't help you find that exact model. However, here is the sword that I most regularly use www.kungfudirect.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_118_119&product_id=102 it is "traditional" or "Spring Steel" Wushu steel is very flexible, Spring steel is mostly rigid but has some flexibility, and combat steel is completely rigid. You can also check out other swords at kungfudirect.com or Tigerclaw.com and if you are outside of the US try DragonSports.eu or shop.ensomartialarts.com or from Kafok.com in Hong Kong, which has some interesting items too!
      Good luck!

      YOU CAN DO IT,OF COURSE YOU CAN ! My Sifu invented the "Just do it!" Phrase 20 years before the shoe company came up with it. Someone in the class would doubt that they could do it and he would get ticked off and say, "DON'T THINK ABOUT IT... JUST DO IT!!" And they would do it perfectly, then he would smile and say, " See,I knew you could do it !" Things might seem complicated, but you can do them, just break them down into smaller sections. 😀😀

    I understand that its a technique for "blade dancing" or showing off, but nonetheless, is there any edge-alignment at any point during the full speed performance? I can clearly see it in the slow demonstration, but is it retained in full speed or is this just (theoretically) a quick parry with whatever?

    It's kind of a dumb question, but will this work well with Wakizashi?

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely! Just please practice with something not sharp before using your wakizashi!
      The length of the weapon will emphasize the circular pattern so a longer sword might look impressive, but ultimately the skill makes the difference and that comes through lots of practice, so go for it!!!

    • @danvexwx6926

  • @Modighen
    @Modighen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m using the equivalent of a jian and I’m finding it a bit tricky because the reverse flower is a bit hard on my armpit and ribcage (I know, because I’m doing it wrong.) Since you mentioned you had a video of that flower on your channel, I’ll take a look at that to see if I can’t figure out where I’m going wrong. Strictly speaking, however, I did find the instruction was pretty clear.

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a couple things, you may be moving your torso too soon before the jian on the return, that or you may be letting the jian rotate too much when it's behind your back. You can first try moving your torso less and keep your arm extended further forward. The more the elbow is bent, the more likely you will be able to put the sword behind your back. I hope that helps!

    • @Modighen
      @Modighen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I realized I was working on a slightly different technique altogether (it looked quite similar at the time) and since I found your video on the reverse flower specifically, I'll keep at it because it flows better than what I was doing. If I slow down a bit and practice a lot it should flow given enough time.

    Great video, but that sound of loose guard is very annoying, wrapping cord between the handle and the guard can fix that sword.
