I have watched countless hours of tutorial videos on handling a sword. I started with yours and I always come back to yours. You have a very efficient and explanatory way of teaching. I really appreciate that.
I didn't really expect much when I clicked on your video, but as I kept watching I started to realize that your sword skills were pretty good. Then I realized that your communication skills were even better than your sword skills. I'm not a very coordinated guy, so the fact that I can now twirl a sword like a pro really says something your instruction. KEEP IT UP!
now i know this video is old but my old sensei recommended me to learn some form of sword fighting as i excelled in philipino-kali stick fighting (also called escrima) so i took up kendo classes which are sword fighting techniques using a similar style of kali sticks rather than swords. i recently bought a lightsaber and i am now watching all of your videos to learn tricks to go along with my moves. You seem to be the only person that i can actually follow as everyone else's are complicated. Thanks.
Shoot, I never came back! I watched this however many years ago and along with swords spinning, I’ve also taken up foil fencing. Thanks for that little bit that helped me fall in love with the art!
From a firearm instructor to the wonderful sword instructor in this video. Wonderfully well done. Please continue publishing your teaching videos. I see the same passion and desire to teach people properly with a sword as I am with teaching people how to effectively and safely use firearms. (*Bows head out of respect.*)
@Jeffrey Pauley I bet it isn't a real sword. Its gotta be decorative or for cosplay or some shit. 8 lbs doesn't sound like a lot but theres a reason even longswords are generally only 3 lbs max. I would maybe believe you if it was like a scottish claymore with a big shilt, and maybe some sort of big decorative pommel
I like how she hides her face. It brings some mystery. I think she's a master of such a level where you have serious enemies all over the world. So it's done in order to protect yourself, because she's revealing the secret ancient techniques no one except for the chosen legends should be learning... Now we know, sansei!
Fabio Cisotto Sorry for the late reply! I got my sword online from Party City. You can do a quick search for "sword" in their search bar and many options will come up. Mine is plastic but very realistic and I got it for just $10. They have other types than just Japanese swords, as well, like medieval and pirate.
Very beginner-friendly instructions, and you obviously know your stuff really well. It also helps that your voice just mesmerizes (though this might be just me xD). Definitely subscribing!
Just got my disney exclusive yoda saber today and wanted to do some of these neet tricks. My right index knuckle is getting a little red from the friction but it's okay because it's cold in Portugal. Thank you so much ^^
Hi. Just pointing out a detail that I missed in all the others vids about sword flourishing/sword spinning: you actually loosen your grip on the sword and make it pivot into the ring formed by your index and thumb, if I have seen correctly. Without that passage, the wrist itself is not enough to allow a complete sword spinning (and that was my major mistake, which got me someway hurt). Let me know if I'm wrong about that.
great video! could you perhaps do a tutorial on how to gracefuly and with fluidity spin a sword behind ones back from left hand to right into an attacking pose without hamstringing yourself or lobbing ones own legs off entirely??
Left handed: is the nuckle of my index finger supposed to hurt after doing the backward spin in the horizontal position? Is the stick/sword touching the nuckle? Thank you
I really enjoyed your videos is the best among all I tried. ShinobiCat, I have been training with a bokken, but some hand and arm muscles hurt, because of the weight of the bokken (wood). Do you know any sales site (eBay, etc.) where i can find a sword like yours? If the answer is yes, tell me the model of your or the link for purchase. Thank you for your videos!
This is even more impressive with an axe. Axes are cheaper and more readily available at the local hardware store... and there are no laws against assault axes.
+Jian Lin Not exactly. It's not your thumb that's doing all the work, but your hand that creates the momentum. Your fingers should control its direction while maintaining grip.
learn from physics , the more heavy it is the more momentum it had, because the more heavy the unit , the more force we have to made to create velocity
I really can't spin the sword when my hand is sideways. Normally you just squeeze the hilt with your thumb and the base of the index finger and let it spin through. It's a totally different trick for a sideways spin since you need to spin it around your whole palm.
The strategy your using here is unbelievably hard with a real katana. I'm standing here, trying to use this technique, but the amount of stress on the fingers and wrist from the weight of a 28 inch steel blade makes me think this isn't proper technique to do this.

You are the answer to my praying. I COULD NOT FIND ANY VIDEOS OTHER THAN THIS THAT ACTUALLY HELP YOU DO DIS. I WAS STRUGGLING SO MUCH THANK YOU!
exactly
It would be cool to do but....
*I only have a real sword. I'm not trying die today*
@Jeffrey Pauley almost no real sword should weigh that much lol. Longswords only way between 2 - 3 lbs.

She's a ninja😱😱😱😱😱
ShinobiCAT could you please show how to do the backwards spin sideways I still do not understand how to do it please
Students, please do the spin with a wooden bokken, then practice with an unsharpened blade only.
Student of Miyamoto Masashi.
@Not Hyperbole - Perhaps you might actually start by spelling his name correctly? It's Musashi. 😀
I really want to learn this
Just watched the live action Mulan again, just thought i’d learn to do this.
Am I the only one doing whith a shovel?
I got a bokken for Xmas so that's why I'm here

ur very good girl. the force is strong in u
Hey, thanks! That means a lot :)
udis udist Wow, I didn't even realize you were the same person that posted that lasagna comment lol
To do this with a longsword the sword has to be thrown and caught little as it’s centre of balance is further up.

I can't get my arm to stay still during the reverse spin, any tips?
training until u can.... thats it
I just realized that I’ve been able to do the backwards spin for awhile but I can’t spin it forward
Great tutorial, thanks 🙏
I think they meant a backwards spin not a behind the back spin
Thanks for the vid, now i just need a sword, I've bren practicing with a damn plastic stick thats used to close the persian things on a window

I believe its more difficult doing this with a real katana because 3 pounds is hard to lift with just your thumb weight
