Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully give you instructions on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons, so you can watch what every other student has learned in the past. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō that is at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. My favorite part of these videos is always how amazed, bewildered and impressed Tsukada-san is during them. He's obviously very skilled in his own right, but he's just in awe of Seki-sensei.
It’s not quite what happened with Mr 1 but the Lion song he beat him with is a on sword technique. Personally I’m thinking his final battle will not be with Mihawk, but with a significantly weaker swordsman (maybe the elder with a sword) and it will be a mirror of Zoro’s fight with Mihawk, just with Zoro using one sword saying they aren’t worthy of all 3. And then there will be an ironic echo of “scars on the back are a swordsman’s shame.)
Dropping one of his swords as a diversion feels like something that would be shameful and unforgivable to Zoro but at the same time. Nothing would be more epic than dropping the other two and finishing a big bad with Kuinas
The fact he created all of these for the sake of the video, and yet they still look textbook, smooth and fluid.. he has become his craft, he is his own magnum opus
It would be sad for a living martial art to remain static and beholden to the past. Any real combative art should put pragmatism at the forefront of its technique.
Reminds me of Leckuchner's concept of being 'freely unbridled', where when you sword is tied up you drop it to grapple the opponent. Going from an unarmed attack/grapple into a dagger draw works pretty seamlessly from what we've experienced. The two sword style as the initial start into the shooting in and dagger draw just puts together several parts that all exist, very nice.
@@nickaschenbecker9882I've seen that video and honestly it kinda irritated me. As far as pure steel on steel, it's not a bad representation. But the saya is PART of the weapon, and not allowing its use is disingenuous to the weapon IMO. Can I request seki sensei to demosntrate the battojutsu draw style called Hiten-Mitsurugiryu from rurouni kenshin?? It would be interesting to see him demonstrate this movement in real life since this is the most iconic in the anime series 😆✨
I’ve seen other sensei’s talk about it. It’s technically doable, but it’s not like the anime because it’s simply a drawing technique. The main way to make it work would be to pull the katana further out from your body, so you pull back on the sheath at the same time as drawing to quickly draw. I’d love to see Seki Sensei also demonstrate it!
Just want to say how much I love the whole atmosphere your dojo seems to have. You can tell just by watching how respectful and skilled you all are. Thank you for sharing this great content and please keep it up!
True Mastery leads to true inspiration! And Master Seki is without question a true Master 🙏 Thank you Shogo San for asking these things and I think Master Seki relishes the challenge 👍 Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate
There's another character besides Zoro who fights with 3 blades...in fact he was likely inspired by Zoro. In the game Tenchu: Kurenai (in the US it's Tenchu: Fatal Shadows) one of the bosses you fight is named Shinogi and he fights with two full sized katana and carries a smaller blade..looks like a short wakizashi or long tanto, in his mouth. The game came out quite a bit after One Piece... One Piece started it's run in Japan on July 22 in 1997...Tenchu Kurenai was released exactly 7 years later, as it came out in Japan on July 22 2004. It's pretty interesting to see the things inspired by fantasy and how they can be brought into reality.
How amazing and skilled do you have to be to come up with a kata that uses a special principle on a random topic in ten minutes. I am once again in awe of his abilities. 🤩
Thank you for the video. It's scary to see how such things would look from a martial arts perspective. It's also impressive that Seki-sensei could come up with new katas in such a short time. Part of me envies japanese culture over how people could see a crest and knew just from that if they could trust someone or not. In germany it's not rare for the problems to be inside the group. Do japanese people even have sibling rivalry? Thank you for showing a more realistic perspective on something like this. Lots of love from europe
Watching a master swordsman do his art is such a delight, even though in the past it would've look incredibly gruesome to watch these moves being performed in a real combat.
I love how the principles of the kata on 3:28 are very similar to how a grappler might condition and then grapple the oponent (which IS also in the kata) on a fighting game. Thanks for sharing and teaching us all of this :D
This is amazing content, not only are you showing off a cool anime reference, you are also teaching self defense in a way, how to protect yourself in different situations keep up the amazing work you guys!
Amazing video, what I love the most is that even is a serious demonstration, everybody is having a great time and enjoying this, thanks for making martial arts so enjoyable
Once again, thank you guys for putting this stuff out there. It is great to see passionate people doing this. Leaving a comment here for the algorithm. As always, however, it would be really good to see these being done in protective equipment against a resisting opponent. In some of demonstrations I have seen from this channel, it relies on the opponent being cooperative or using very poor distancing. I say this meaning no disrespect whatsoever 🙏 My reaction is that these techniques will be difficult to do unless various things are altered.
I love that upon request this master can CREATE a new kata. And I agree. He looked like he was having fun. You should give more credit to his partner….
On paper this looks very neat and practical, but I would like to see a fast demonstration where the opponent is also resisting and reacting to the blocks and grabs while the third weapon is being drawn out because in a real fight, they would not be standing still while that happens. Of the three shown in the video, the third seems to be the most reliable method because you're actually controlling the opponent's movement and posture.
Agreed. Looks especially problematic in the second kata (3:16) .. It takes him almost a full second after grabbing the opponent's hands upwards to draw his tanto and stab. If in the moment he gets grabbed the opponent was to step back while moving the arms downwards (especially putting force into the shoulders), seki's grip wouldn't have enough of a leverage to hold it there. It's the leverage of the shoulder moving downward vs. the end of an extended arm. And it gets even worse when seki actually drops the hold with one arm to go draw the tanto. So as a result, the katana would come down on Seki's head, opponent could probably even do a pretty good draw cut over the head while retreating backwards. But even if the opponent doesn't quite intuit this on the spot, just by panicking from getting controlled like that, one would probably try to tear himself out of this hold as quickly as possible by pulling off backwards or to the side. Which would quickly move him out of that tanto's range. And that leaves the situation as a katana vs. tanto fight with some distance in between the two, and that's not a very favorable matchup for the tanto guy.
This demonstration was not practices therefore was not fluid. But everything shown is fleshed out and when practiced to be fluid would be fast enough, a main point was surprise where the opponent would have pause as to how to react.
@@Bl00dyfist If surprised Smash Bros players can react in milliseconds, then I wouldn't trust a tanto + element of surprise against a katana moving with momentum towards my head.
This reminds me of one of the first things my own martial arts sensei taught me what we started weapon drills. That true mastery of a weapon is mixing it into your hand to hand and not being too focused on the weapon in your hands. He joked that if your weapon limits you, then it mastered you, not the other way around.
In my inexperienced eyes some of the katas seemed biased towards Saki-sensei. I know they did it to show the katas better or because the lack of practice in this new movements, but sometimes in the timeframe of letting the katanas fall or picking up the tantō the opponent could have hurt him or escaped from the grip. I hope nobody was offended by my opinion and I'm thankful that you are providing these informative and educational content.
Very smart!) Enjoyed to witness this extraordinary work of master’s mind, simplicity (more of a clarity type) and deep understanding of mechanics at the same time) Pure pleasure, thank you!)
The 1st sets of moves are basic martial arts. What I mean is that they'll only work, if- and assuming your opponent is going for the 2-handed strike overhead, leaving their core exposed. You'd be royally screwed if they decided to go for a side ways swing or even upwards or a lunge. So there you are, having thrown all your weapons away- willingly- getting chopped to pieces. And on the 2nd set, why the hell would you throw away both of your katanas, if you already have a grip on your opponent and got him facing away from you? Just seems unnecessarily risky, when you could just NOT throw your weapons away and finish the fight there and there with your existing weapon on your free hand. Reminds me a lot of about many self defence classes and sports, actually. Lots of flashy moves, scenarios that require specific sets of elements to work, when you could, in fact, most of the time just kick them in the balls/crotch as hard as you can and run away fast.
Seki-sensei is always very impressive. Even when he moves so slowly that he can explain what he's doing, you just KNOW every gesture is masterfuly calculated. His muscle memory is out of this world, you can see it in the flow of his movement : no hesitation, no need for eye contact, and he can replicate over and over again with the same pace and precision. To the average viewer it's just show and tell, but this is mastery at another level.
It's not as flashy and definitely different from what Zoro does but I personally think this method is still cool af in it's own right What's Seki Sensei is doing reminds me of tactics I saw when I tried to better myself in a fighting game, You try to confuse opponent or make him move in a way that gives you the window to attack, and that makes me realize that a fight is a fight, and it does not matter if it's in real world or on a computer screen there's always a resemblance (of course if the game itself is well made and gives you space to maneuver)
Please give us more medieval/English/Norse weapons in his hands! The long sword video was great. I think he’d be really interested in the Viking axe. Maybe a halberd/pike?
I loved the video so much! the kata that jumps to the back of the oponent and stabs their neck , its great! Seki sensei is so skilled. Great video , love you both!
The dagger was usually the winning weapon in duels in the west too. Often, longsword duels to the death would be settled with both knights on the ground trying to get the upper hand long enough to stab the opponent with their dagger.
This makes me think of how fighting games actually take from martial arts in concept, as manipulating your opponent’s actions based on strategic rhythms. I love martial arts, samurai, one piece, and fighting games. Consider me a new fan!
Konnichiwa, thank you for Sharing, Sensai: I really enjoyed this video, because it is giving me a look into Bushi, so that I have a better understanding of Bushi training as a novice.-Domo Arigato Gozemusa
5 seconds of big chungus gigachad mastery. That's how you know this dude is the real deal! He can laugh at himself and do goofy things just to make other people laugh with him!
The thing that I learned from seki-sensei is...to utilize everything as a weapon...ideas, thoughts, swords, n rope...what a master. To utilize losing a weapon as an advantage is one that not everybody thinks about.
Nice! Can you do an episode showing how can we use katana to defend ourselves nowadays while facing short knife in real life like dagger, kitchen knife...etc.! Thanks!!
How about Saito Hajime's "Gatotsu" move from Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin on which he grips the long sword only from the base of the tsuka with the left hand.
The way I would use 3 katanas is to have one of the katanas for the dual wield be specially made to be partially hollow and reinforced at the hilt, which would have a secret compartment for the short katana for surprise attacks. A strong metal wiring would also be within the sword. Ensuring that the extra blade actually isn't separated easily from the main sword, while also allowing chain combos to force your opening back, to fight at range, to weigh down his sword if caught in the chain so you can let go of that one (not play tug of war) and attack with the free one
While researching Noh drama, I found the principles of jo-ha-kyu (beginning-break-rapid). The reference I used stated this concept was applied to many thing, including budo. Does Asayama Ichiden Ryu use this historical concept as well? If so, how is it expressed in this Ryu? TIA
Good day Sensei Thank you so much Mr Shogo Really wish to have chance to practice this art One cannot choose where he was born, if one could have had that choice. Would’ve chosen Japanese to learn from many great masters
I've seen swords that are 2 swords in a single sheath. Not Katana, but it can be used as a single sword or split into two swords. But I think what is most important in combat is to have your strong base of knowledge and to be able to adapt so that anything valid can be used to go with the flow. Whether it is three swords or 10 swords, what matters is that you are sensitive to the flow.
Its also interesting that using 3 katana can also just be used for multiple utility. If say you needed a backup or spare, you can store one on your back or back hip to redistribute weight. It would be a pain to keep maintenance though

But a counter in a video game is way easier than a counter in a fight IRL, specially if the opponent is using a single katana @@ninjaydes
@@ninjaydesEveryone can react in milliseconds, it just depends on how many 🤣
Your sensei is a fun and open-minded gentlemen. I appreciate the uses for the three weapons
This reminds me of one of the first things my own martial arts sensei taught me what we started weapon drills. That true mastery of a weapon is mixing it into your hand to hand and not being too focused on the weapon in your hands. He joked that if your weapon limits you, then it mastered you, not the other way around.
I also didn't know what to expect in this video. What a joy it was to discover such a deceptive format!
that was really good, realistic and cool to look at, as expected from a master 👍
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this new video!
Thanks for demonstrating this
Thank you for sharing this content! It is highly appreciated.
Awsomely filmed, explained and edited!! Sensei is amazing!! Love his personality!
Also, they even had a Colby in the background. xD
Very smart!) Enjoyed to witness this extraordinary work of master’s mind, simplicity (more of a clarity type) and deep understanding of mechanics at the same time) Pure pleasure, thank you!)
Excellent story and technique!
This is great , good job 🔥✌🏻
Oh my god this is brilliant and beautiful to watch!
When you can take the knowledge you have and use it to theorize and make new ideas that the sign of an actual expert. Great video
I am always like hypnotized when I see this. It's so exciting and fascinating. It's always fun to watch your videos.
One thing I would like to see is seki joining you in one of your reactions to movies or games like ghost of tsushima.
It's not as flashy and definitely different from what Zoro does but I personally think this method is still cool af in it's own right
What's Seki Sensei is doing reminds me of tactics I saw when I tried to better myself in a fighting game, You try to confuse opponent or make him move in a way that gives you the window to attack, and that makes me realize that a fight is a fight, and it does not matter if it's in real world or on a computer screen there's always a resemblance (of course if the game itself is well made and gives you space to maneuver)
Seki Sensei is trully a sick sensei! ALL you guys are really cool. I'm learning a lot.
Thank you.
Greetings from Brazil.
🇧🇷
Please give us more medieval/English/Norse weapons in his hands! The long sword video was great.
I think he’d be really interested in the Viking axe. Maybe a halberd/pike?
Great video 👍. Thanks for putting this together!
I wonder what Seki Sensein has to say on Hiten Mitsurugi from Rurouni Kenshin. Great video. The martial logic and the fluidity is incredible.
Very interesting way to utilize the tanto.
Great video
Wow that last move was the samurai equivalent for it's always faster to switch to your sidearm than reload.
Netflix should've hired Seki-sensei for Mackenyu's stunts!
I loved the video so much! the kata that jumps to the back of the oponent and stabs their neck , its great! Seki sensei is so skilled. Great video , love you both!
Watching Sensei do his kata is like button mashing in a game... If you press the button in a correct sequence, the effect is marvelous!
Seki sensei brought some next level ideas in this one.
The dagger was usually the winning weapon in duels in the west too. Often, longsword duels to the death would be settled with both knights on the ground trying to get the upper hand long enough to stab the opponent with their dagger.
Zoro will be happy
This makes me think of how fighting games actually take from martial arts in concept, as manipulating your opponent’s actions based on strategic rhythms. I love martial arts, samurai, one piece, and fighting games. Consider me a new fan!
i love how the fighting style that uses more weapons uses so much grappling; there's so much creativity in making such a weird prompt work.
Konnichiwa, thank you for Sharing, Sensai: I really enjoyed this video, because it is giving me a look into Bushi, so that I have a better understanding of Bushi training as a novice.-Domo Arigato Gozemusa
I love this, it also teaches a nice principle of combat choreography
5 seconds of big chungus gigachad mastery. That's how you know this dude is the real deal! He can laugh at himself and do goofy things just to make other people laugh with him!
This is so cool. Newer subscriber but I’ve been binging the videos and this one just uploaded. Zoro is one of my favorite one piece characters
The thing that I learned from seki-sensei is...to utilize everything as a weapon...ideas, thoughts, swords, n rope...what a master. To utilize losing a weapon as an advantage is one that not everybody thinks about.
Thank you for the heart on my previous comment but what I was really interested in was a reply.
I really enjoyed the video I love japanese martial arts, something about it that's just so calming to do and watch.
Sensei pulls out so much cool technique that most fictions haven't even thought of yet 😍
0:40 now i understand brock from pokemon LMFAO!
Practical idea of 3 sword style.
LOVE IT.
Fun video!
Great content thank you!
Saying tha Seki Sensei is a sword master is an understatement of epic proportions.
Ahhhh yes the good ol “blade you didn’t know about technique” absolute legend ❤😂
Why do I have the feeling this will be your most viewed video so far?
Excellent kata, top notch! Arigato, keirei o7
Nice! Can you do an episode showing how can we use katana to defend ourselves nowadays while facing short knife in real life like dagger, kitchen knife...etc.! Thanks!!
I love that 残念と. It really conveys "you thought you were about to win, but unfortunately...."
Cast him as the blind general in live action
How about Saito Hajime's "Gatotsu" move from Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin on which he grips the long sword only from the base of the tsuka with the left hand.
I am really curious on traditional dual katana techniques.
5:42 why does he have to be so cool about it. this is main character posing right here
The way I would use 3 katanas is to have one of the katanas for the dual wield be specially made to be partially hollow and reinforced at the hilt, which would have a secret compartment for the short katana for surprise attacks.
TIA
Good day Sensei
Thank you so much Mr Shogo
Really wish to have chance to practice this art
One cannot choose where he was born, if one could have had that choice. Would’ve chosen Japanese to learn from many great masters
素晴らしいです!! ありがとうございます !
Sword mastery is about skill, and experience. Those will help tremendously help to perfect your swordsmanship.
Great kata, will be implementing
I've seen swords that are 2 swords in a single sheath. Not Katana, but it can be used as a single sword or split into two swords. But I think what is most important in combat is to have your strong base of knowledge and to be able to adapt so that anything valid can be used to go with the flow. Whether it is three swords or 10 swords, what matters is that you are sensitive to the flow.
Amazing
Its also interesting that using 3 katana can also just be used for multiple utility. If say you needed a backup or spare, you can store one on your back or back hip to redistribute weight. It would be a pain to keep maintenance though
