Hi guys and girls. A few people have been asking about interior comparisons, of which there isn't one in the video. The original edit of this video did have one but it was cut due to the video being too long. However, we still have that footage so if enough people want it and like this, then I can publish another video with all of the interiors. Sorry about it not being there, we just felt it killed the pace a bit and made it too long to justify. Let us know what you want... UPDATE: Here it is: th-cam.com/video/rWDBBr8-4_s/w-d-xo.html
Yes! Pls compare interiors too. From what ive seen and heard ford interiors have very plastic/ cheap kinda feel on their dash and door panels. idk bout the new civics, but my dc2 (gen3) has nicer interior than lots of these newer cars that are nothing but plastic.
Ok, looks like a good amount of you want to see that footage. This week we are working with some other cars, but I can schedule the interior video in for next week. Hope that works for everyone.
+Inside Lane I don't think that anyone prefers "pace" over information in a review. Also the video is already more than ten minutes which will scare the quick-i-gotta-go guys away anyway.
+ Kaisuke 971 shut up nigga , it even beat your slow ass bimmer , go cry to yo mama Always must be that stupid bimmer guy comment hate on honda, you know what , bmw sucks for reliability so go suck on it good for ownership first few years then it break your wallet
I like this guys unbiased review. He really puts thought into his commentary, one parallel that i thought was really something is another channel made a review comparing the Subaru WRX and the Ford Focus ST, the difference were nearly exactly the same. I think it really comes down to who you are, in choosing between these two.
+Romo Maloul I've owned the WRX and ST and am really intrigued with the new Type R because I've owned a few Hondas/Acuras over the years and it's a struggle to come up with negative things to say about Hondas/Acuras (except for the fact that the Fit I owned was way underpowered to the point it could have gotten better MPG's with a bigger motor) from a daily driver perspective. *shrugs*
+Cricket Just Cricket I've not owned an RS yet, but if the ST is indicative of what I might experience with the RS -- outside of the drivetrain -- I might just want to see what the Type-R feels like before rushing to buy an RS.
I can't get over the busy all over the place styling of the Civic Type R. It's too boy racer and if anything, makes you wish Honda would have at least take cues from their previous RSX - a gorgeous car.
i really like the honda more, but i respect the engineering of the ford. i hope subaru will put the sti to it's paces with a new model. great review as always!
I could see liking the styling of the TypeR if I were 15 again and in love with Fast and Furious movies...But being a grownup, I'll take the Focus in black.
I absolutely hate Ford's, but this Focus is a truly amazing car. It is making me take a hard look at Ford today. The choice for me is the Focus due to performance and the fact that a grown man can own it without looking like I am having a mid life crisis. What a car, cheaper and faster than all the competition. I am thinking of getting one.
I plan on buying the type R when it hits the states. I could have pulled the trigger on the RS but I need a car thats more fun to drive. Going around a track slightly faster does not mean its more fun. The civic type R is lighter and therefore more responsive and nimble. Also, the shifter and the seating position is far superior than in the RS which again, brings me back to the importance of driver engagement. The RS seats make you sit high up and ontop of the car. Lastly and not mentioned in this video, Honda is far superior in reliability and holding its value than Ford. I guarantee that RS will give drivers more headaches than they can afford.. especially when they mod.
I'm sure the Civic is a wonderful car to drive, but I just can't get away from the fact it looks like it was styled by someone who's weekend job is animating low budget Saturday morning cartoons. The original Type R was a very clean, simple, good looking car. This one is just trying way too hard.
I traded in my 2011 WRX hatch for a 2014 Focus ST. In some ways I regret it, but in some ways I do not. With that FWD vs AWD bit I do miss the AWD in the wet and snow, but the ST feels much more poised and fun and maybe even just a bit quicker on the highways. With the RS I'd imagine it would combine the best of both worlds with regards to traction and handling, BUT I will say my ST feels chintzy -- not that my WRX didn't feel chintzy with its A/C going out at like 60k miles and annoying rattles, but the Focus I have feels neglected in other aspects of build quality such as the dash, floor mats and generally fit-and-finish inside and out. I'm on the fence with trying to find an older STi hatch or a new RS. Perhaps I'm one of those guys that looks at the Civic Type R as the car that might actually suit my preferences the best -- I've been a Honda owner for a decade or so and have never been disappointed, at least not quite like I've been disappointed with the Subaru or Ford.
Hey just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos and must say that this video was excellent. After watching this I went out and purchased a 2016 Focus ST (RS was too expensive) the next day and I have been nothing but satisfied thus far! Keep up the Great content!
@@thesulo12 The RS can be made to look good with a few tweaks here and there and the right colour. There's no saving that Type R it looks like a silly cartoon
My first encounter with the Focus was mid 2000. Did not care for how it look. They had the recalls for the wheels falling off, the stereo would turn itself back on after turning the car off (it was an actual feature to be used, but not by itself. It was meant for the driver to turn on) and then the turn signal switch started going bonkers. Left and right would come on at random, sometimes both at the same time. That said, seeing the RS and what the Focus has become, particularly in the hatchback area is astounding. I never would have thought Ford would do an all-wheel drive setup, let alone make it into some kind of all weather, and even a track car. I've been in some kind of Honda since 2010. I grew up as someone who loved American cars, particularly muscle cars. Almost bought a Camaro in 2011. In some regards, I wish I had. I now have a 92 Civic and love it, though it's hard parked. With the right mods and drive train, it'll be a killer car. Seeing and hearing about the Type-R, on top of it coming to the US, has really peaked my interest in it. Unfortunately, I won't have the money to buy it. Love the comparison between the two. Just got introduced to this channel the other day. Will be watching more as the days go by. :)
Inside Lane the R looks better, sounds better, has more theater... if you're going out too buy the track focused cars you're going to want something that excites you more. its the NSX / GTR problem, people who want to go out and buy super cars want to be thrilled and excited like no other super car / sports car can do... but yet they are so numb, un-engaging, and boring for the sake of being easier to drive and to live with... most people already own a 2nd car for that duty of the DD. and if you're looking at these rather expensive hit hatches im sure either 1 you own a DD or 2 you would go with something more DD friendly.
I'm not sure why anyone is impressed with a 300hp FWD car since we've had that or similar in basic sedans for over 10 years. The Maxima, Impala, Azera, Cadenza, Lacrosse all have or have had between 270 and 300+ hp and put the power down fine without being high performance cars. Back on topic, I agree that AWD RS would be more useful in most situations, the Type R will be a very niche market car that can't use its power most of the time.
+iSOBigD ...do you seriously not understand why 300HP for a Type R is good? Every one of those cars you mentioned is at least 500lbs heavier and is geared completely differently. They aren't considered high performance because they're clumsy at high speeds. All of this should be pretty obvious, and that being said, 300HP for a 3000lbs car is not bad.
Peter Schmidt 1000hp for a 3000lb car would be not bad either, my point is that you can put tons of HP on a FWD car without any issue, there's nothing amazing about it and it's a common thing. Also, something like a 6th gen maxima was 3500lb while being a giant full size car, so 3000lb is only light by today's standards because cars got way heavier. The issue is people seem to think only RWD and AWD cars can have over 200hp.
+Raul Espinoza that's not true at all. there are modified fwd civics which beat a veyron in a straight line. it's just a matter of power, weight and grip (they use much wider front wheels). The limitation for fwd cars is that the wheels also need to turn so you can't use 15 inch wide wheels in the front for example. Rwd cars with high hp simply use wider wheels and tires to put the power down. With 7" wheels and no traction control any rwd car with 200hp+ will spin in place if you floor it as well. Nissan also had a track only racecar btw which was fwd and it had no problem keeping up.
+gip1279 was it an st? was it new? was it beat to shit? was it a first year of a new model? did it blow up while romping on it on a cold start? theres so many factors that go into this
Always been a Honda fan due to good engineering, design, reliability, and resale, but I gotta admit that over the top styling looks like crap and the clean lines of the focus are really nice.
Performance is great and it's one of the reason I love hot hatches (personally own an ST), but aside from the "hot" part, how good is the Civic at being a hatch? It's been a long time since we've had a Civic hatchback in the US, so very curious about the practicality side of things compared to the Focus.
People are forgetying a tr was never ever meant to be a powerhouse car it has and always will be a momentum car 300hp isn't a lot of power obviously but the civic is able to be so agile and quick in corners thanks to the engineers at Honda that have been making perfectly balanced cars that have always been beating the cars with more power in circuits or on the touge
Cool video! I just wish u would talk in more detail. For example u mentioned weight factors but never included the actual weight. I know i can go look them up, but it makes the video more comprehensive. thanks for ur time in sharing this, these are the 2 most exciting hatches on market right now.
I had a wrx STI, that I sold a few months ago, and the I bought one Type r, having tried focus, I can openly(frankly) help you if you have a question on these 3 cars . I have had 3 VTEC in the past, and I definitely Fan again and again of Japanese cars and not for nothing.
I've been hearing of the Focus RS issue of going through a set of tires extremely fast because of the awd system and the torque vector, and that's not including the drift mode being used.
always honda because it is FUN and RELIABLE.....i most definitely don't want to spend all that money for one and a few years there's a major problem with it all for the sake of it's a bargain or I can drive it in any weather I rather have something like the type R which I know it's reliable and fun to drive but yeah it might not be for every weather condition but I least anytime I want to get in it I know it will start up everytime and last for years
+gentlemonsterkennels To be fairly honoust, the quality issue this guy adresses is correct. Anybody who is into cars knows the quality of Honda vs any other make. If you deny that fact you might want to get education on that.
I have to agree with you, having recently driven the 2016 CTR it's amazing but simply too harsh for UK roads, plus R button is redundant on 80% of our roads, the other 20% are motorways. Props for not doing a pointless 0-60 between a FWD and AWD like so many do. Peace
"Both cost the same." You can end the video right there. You get so much more for your money with the Ford. It's the winner before you even get behind the wheel. The only people that will buy the civic are Honda fanboys.
or, the people who appreciate true driving feels and a bit more rawness in a car, RS might as well be an automatic too, already does 90% of the work for you
😂😂 naa no buthurt here, I love all cars all makes all types whatever doesn't matter, I have a swapped 89 civic, factory rack and pinion, no power steering, AC, airbags, and boy is that the definition of driving feel. I've driven awd turbo cars, a few, and I can entirely relate to what he means by driving feel, faster or power isn't always better, and compare the Nurburgring times between the 2.
I know it's preferences, but I can't stand how Hondas have started looking over the years, I've had 3 civic 90's, early 2000's and mid 2000's. I used to hate the look of the focuses but love the look of them now. I love the focus st my fiancé and I have, we will be trying to get the rs hopefully in a year or two. Well Done Team Ford. Coming from a team Subbie loyalist.
+Mcufre Likely for the same reason we haven't. RS is so new at the moment, Ford are only just starting to give them to journalists to take home, it means there is a restriction with what you can do with them. For example, Ford organised the use of Silverstone for the RS but we couldn't take the Type R on track because it was a Ford event.
Good effort and a thumbs up from me. When I see a comparison I'd really expect them to be driven together over the same roads though. I know you've driven them within a few days of each other but they really need to be driven together in my opinion. Also feel the interior comparison is a key part of a head to head and shouldn't be cut out. Having ordered an RS I can see how the Type R could give better feedback to a good driver in perfect conditions. I'm probably not good enough to get the best out of the Honda though and I feel the torque vectoring of the RS is a better benefit to me on normal roads. Pretty much what you say! Well done.
+Ian James Both cars were driven on the same day back to back, but logistically it was impossible on that day to get them together at the exact same time. I have driven both is similar conditions and so the summary is my ultimate judgement of the pair. I am writing an article to accompany this which will have a few more details. Sorry about the interiors being cut out. The video was over 13 minutes with them in and we like to keep our lengths down to around 8 mins. If enough people want interior comparisons we still have the footage and could do a video on it.
can you check real 0-60mph time? I heard focus is much slower than ford states (5.5s to 60mph) and civic when launched from 2nd gear can even do 5.2 sec to 60mph. thanks
rs is not only the better all rounder, mount-tune will take this car to 450 bhp and keep the warranty, but you got to think resale too.. look at the previous models. type r after 5 years loses 60% of its value RS after 5 years loses 10% of its value a good Sierra RS is worth 3 times its original value
+Ose93da just had a look on auto trader USA and the civic type R sell's for the same pathetic price over there as it does in Europe however looks like they cost more on the US market in the first place. I did see the new type R on the track the other day and it was fast for a family car.
Nope. I spoke with the engineers on the cars launch. All standard apart from the fitment of a roll cage (on bushings so it didn't add rigidity) and the removal of the air conditioning unit to counter the wait of the cage.
I love my Honda but I couldn't buy the type r. I feel like I'd have to immediately do mods to tone down the exterior. the rs definitely seems like the idea car for a more mature driver
+Jonathan Torres another rwd Honda would be sweet. Honda's awd systems really seem to be lacking, might be a different story in a couple, hatch or sedan though
+wwu124 RS is too new at the moment, but Type R is generally pretty reliable. I think there were some teething problems with very early Type R, but that isn't unusual for performance cars.
+Inside Lane In terms of performance and 4WD, I am leaning toward the RS. However, I want a car that is reliable and easy to maintain. I have been a long-time happy Honda owner because of this.
Meh id take the type R for the fact of If you drive a car every day you know how it will act and the fact that you get more response from it that makes it more of a drivers car. Focus rs is nice but still Type R proves its king with Times and the fact that they made race cars from them. alternatively ford is planing on rallying the rs so a better comparison would be a wrx sti and a rs they are in the same group of people
while I'm a Honda fan and especially the Type R and can't wait for the 2018 version. which will be my next vehicle! I respect this great honest review and I see pros and cons on both, but Honda is my choice and always will be! :) Good job!
More value for the money is the RS? lol Just own both a few years later then the truth of value shows up. The Honda is much more reliable, more economical to own and able to keep its resale value higher and less down times due to car problems. As for the Ford owners you will be sending your favorite mechanic's kids to University at your expense.
+Lok Tom Not sure if you was looking to buy an RS or Type R that reliability would be your biggest concern. Have you seen the price of an Escort/Sierra Cosworth these days? Or even a 7 year old RS would set you back £20k. Normal depreciation rules don't apply to these cars, if you bought a second hand 2016 RS now it would cost more than a new one!. Additionally a new car would have a warranty so no worries about any major repairs etc, apart from the cost of new rubber, but that is an expense I can live with :)
+Thomas Brown Well, when a 2016 used RS is back on the market so soon, it only means the previous owner experience is not a pleasant one. But he has done the right decision. Sell it quick & high $$$$$ while the market demands is hot and trade for something nicer. It's not a keeper.
+Lok Tom how do you know it's more reliable? it's a new car with new engine. there's no history to back up your claims other than typical John Doe thinking "honduhs are moar reliable".
+Vlican Between the 2 Honda is more reliable. Just check out the history of their products from the past 5 years or older. Ford can't even built a regular no thrill and no performance grocery getter reliable. We can argue all day about it. Finally is still your decision to feel the experience. I have experienced with both companies before the comment.
+Thomas Brown Most people sees top performance is in their top ownership priority. Bragging Right. Unless you trade in very frequently. But as for a "keeper" it is a complete different situation. It means how much down times during repairs ( even wt warranty claims ) and does it hurt you financially in the long run ? Not to mention the embarrassing of waiting for the bus during repairs. Better get some nice dark sun glasses to wait for the bus if you gonna own a Ford., cause you don't want your friends and neighbors sees you there.
+raidacaipo No he preferred the Type R under good conditions. Under everyday (slippery) conditions he preferred the RS. The reality is the RS is inherently a more capable car especially on the track.
Something MAJOR you all overlooked. Ford Focus' have a SOLID reputation for being lemons. Honda Civics are SOLID examples of reliability. Ask any mecanic.
+TheBigDanois except these aren't the base models that Joe Blow buys. these performance models have very little in common with their econobox siblings.
What a time to be a driver or hatch fan! Two unbelievably sick cars. I have the focus st (2015) and I love it for reasons that apply to both of these, Focus look and feel but front wheel drive excitement.
AWD beats out FWD anyday.. i drive a FWD.. i hate it. it spins so much, you lose so much power taking off, and this guys does a terrible job of pointing that out.. he says, '' if the road surface is perfect i prefer the honda...'' how often are roads perfect? come here to Canada you'll never want that civic
Great video and I totally understand what this guy is saying, I'd still go for the Honda though because I'm a driver and wouldn't want the car to do all the work, that's down to my ability and talent
Thanks for the review, but please next time include one of the most important factors that ALL (and I do mean ALL) reviewers neglect ... what is the HP to weight ratio? It's a sports car, this is the most important number you can provide viewers who are into sports cars. After some research the Honda is 9.9 lbs per HP (3050 lbs / 306 HP), the Ford is 9.8 lbs per HP (3459 lbs / 350 HP).
+Davillain maybe I would agree if this was 15 years ago, but you need to wake up and stop giving excuses. this is a German made car and completely out classes the type r. I love both cars but speed and control wise the rs takes the lead. still I don't understand why the civic is stuck with front wheel drive, it is the only weakness in that car
Confession of a Focus RS owner: I love the RS for it's all weather performance, smiles per miles. I have great respect for the civic. Once the civic spools up, it gave my RS quite a run for the money. It's also a car that looks like it'd be easier to live with (my wife refuses to drive in the RS as it's so bumpy).
+Gimmi J They don't compete directly. If you were to compare lap times and what technology each car employs, the Type R in akin to RS, the Cupra. Being FWD is just a formality in this case. Different means to the same ends.
+S Waugh I doubt it. It's really really hard for Honda to break traditions. Just look how long it takes them to move to turbo charged motors. Ford is a company that likes to jump onto new technology and trends as quickly as possible, Honda likes to makes those moves only when absolutely.. and I mean revenue critical levels of necessary.
+musicmanvin1 Except that Honda of Japan has been making turbo engines for quite some time. Granted, those were all 600cc kei car engines apart from the City Turbo. They just love to give the rest of the world shit.
koopatroopa187 Well, Honda Japan get's nearly an entirely different line up, and like u said, even there it was only with kei cars. Now turbos are finding their ways into much more of the line up. Nothing wrong with their turbo tech, they just don't rush into trends until its proven.
The Civic that lapped the ring was fitted with a roll cage, i challenge them to push the stock car as hard without that extra protection :) Without specialist safety gear you have to drive a track as dangerous as the Nurburgring with some factor of safety unless you want to die. Aside from that pretty good video, cheers
Real world... I'd throw snow tires on the RS and have a blast sliding around in the snow doing AWD drifts feeling like I'm on a rally stage Would you have the same 4 season fun with the Civic?
I would love too see dyno numbers for both cars.....that 340hp sounds great but awd also has the biggest lose of wheel hp, upwards of 35% in some awd systems. we're as fwd does not lose so much hp threw the transmission.... yes there would be a difference but that 36hp difference would be smaller.
A nice fair video - a lot seem to be one sided but this video seems genuine and honest. I'm a Honda man usually but can't deny the Focus is (for value terms) the better choice of car. Not sure which I'd pick if I had the chance to be given one to be honest.
+gentlemonsterkennels It was logistically impossible to get both on the same track at the same time one that day. I have driven both on tracks and think the Type R is the better track car, but as for what is the fastest I think it would depend on what type of track.
+Inside Lane You are saying type r is a better track car, in your opinion of course. Did you time them or try to get an idea about which might have been fastest? I'm more interested in which one is fastest. Type r has such a slow zero to 60 time that I can't imagine it being faster than the RS.
+gentlemonsterkennels What you have to remember is that AWD help greatly with launch, hence the RS' amazing 0-62 time, but it does come with a weight penalty. Whilst the RS is faster off of the line, and on slow corner exit, Type R is better on turn-in breaking, and body control through fast corners. On a wet track I think the RS can really take an advantage, but in the dry on a technical circuit I think the Type R has a chance.
ONYXgamerninja Won't appeal? I swear, we have more Honda's in the States, than anywhere else in the world.. And the car communities are massive here... I don't know why they think it wouldn't sell......
Presumably, yes. But nothing has been officially announced, so we don't really know what the specs will be. The only thing that is confirmed is that the US is in fact getting the type r.
+LJ Balongue Car are only just being given to journalists for their full 1 week road tests. For the moment everyone has only had the RS when Ford has run events.
The Type-R is very good but the comment related to Honda put 306hp on the front wheels seems a little bit exaggerated like it was a new achievement.. remember the old focus RS? The first hot hatch to put 300hp on the front wheels ? :)
+Inside Lane I've driven an old Focus RS a few times, it was an animal, but not always in a good way. Hard to get away from junctions/roundabout's quickly with even a hint of rain, and was happy to try and rip your arms off when accelerating quickly. Also done a few miles in the new Civic R, and its great, really liked it. I'd still favour the new RS on paper, but not had a chance to drive one yet.
+arman aquino word is it's a year or 2 out... Won't have the same design as the one you see in this video it will look more like the N/A Civics that are currently being sold.
+TopShotta Very different. It is an all-new chassis based on 10th gen Civic. Likely to have the same engine though. That car will make its way to Europe too.
two cars. one video. timeline - introduce. drive one. drive the other. compare and summary. this chopping around between them, dialogue here, dialogue there, i ended up getting lost which car you were talking about. planning !! :)
2018 Honda Civic Type R Static Review: th-cam.com/video/aS0KSPOq_VQ/w-d-xo.html

Honda for Reliability
Fastest FWD Record
Honda you got all my Respect.

+ravenstylea2 no kidding. ever since '06 civics have looked more like accords with every generation.
I think Honda should make another RWD car
+ravenstylea2 yeah I can't stand those ugly fender gills. It looks like a fast and furious body kit or something.
Anhelito Ten BRING BACK THE CRX!!!
i really like the honda more, but i respect the engineering of the ford. i hope subaru will put the sti to it's paces with a new model.
great review as always!
+paliccolo Thank you! Yes, I think Subaru do have a bit of catching up to do.
I could see liking the styling of the TypeR if I were 15 again and in love with Fast and Furious movies...But being a grownup, I'll take the Focus in black.
+Nick Motsarsky I guess a real grown up would go for a Golf. :D
+Nick Motsarsky The Focus RS would also be a sleeper. No one would expect a 0-60 time of a little over 4 seconds.
The Focus RS is hardly conservative.
Martin Allen Much more than the civic, especially in a different color.
Ultrabenbooyah I suppose, except the Golf R is much slower than the RS and nowhere near as fun.
Couldn't agree more.
I agree with your comment. It goes down to the parent company and the CEO's philosophy of their products. Ford always come short in the test of time.
Hey just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos and must say that this video was excellent. After watching this I went out and purchased a 2016 Focus ST (RS was too expensive) the next day and I have been nothing but satisfied thus far! Keep up the Great content!
+Riley Gifford ST is a great car. Glad you liked the video.
That civic look like a fucking Prius, what were Honda thinking when they designed the bloody thing.......
+thesulo12 they're both ugly cars honestly
BabySkinCondom yeah true although i was never a fan of the new focuses but they do look much better then the civic
i think the rs is the better car but the front is genuinely worse looking
@@thesulo12 The RS can be made to look good with a few tweaks here and there and the right colour. There's no saving that Type R it looks like a silly cartoon
The back door on the RS was vibrating during the close-up at 5:15. Is it supposed to do that?
+arxmagks It's the camera being distorted by a bumpy surface. Sorry!
The honda already comes prericed? damn
+Juanito Skillz No
My first encounter with the Focus was mid 2000.
like the type R more
+justin bouche That's fair enough. I really like both cars.
Inside Lane the R looks better, sounds better, has more theater... if you're going out too buy the track focused cars you're going to want something that excites you more.
its the NSX / GTR problem, people who want to go out and buy super cars want to be thrilled and excited like no other super car / sports car can do... but yet they are so numb, un-engaging, and boring for the sake of being easier to drive and to live with... most people already own a 2nd car for that duty of the DD. and if you're looking at these rather expensive hit hatches im sure either 1 you own a DD or 2 you would go with something more DD friendly.
great video as always which one eill retain or appreciate in value the most
I'm not sure why anyone is impressed with a 300hp FWD car since we've had that or similar in basic sedans for over 10 years.
+Peter Schmidt A FWD drive car will never fully put it's power down properly, theres a reason it's 0-60 times is a Second slower
Your comment is like comparing a bus or a garbage truck with the same horse power sport car. lol
This is a much better review than Top Gear last night.
Thank you!
did I just hear 168mph civic lol wow
Does the focus still break down after 3 years?
My 13 st still runs fine with big turbo and 80k miles. Leave your ignorance at the door
+brett3140 actually it experience. I had a focus and it was a piece of shit. The engine blew.
+gip1279 was it an st? was it new? was it beat to shit? was it a first year of a new model? did it blow up while romping on it on a cold start? theres so many factors that go into this
+gip1279 lol I had a Honda once and the engine blew, therefore they must all suck.
+Doug Bradley was your Honda almost bee like my focus was?
Always been a Honda fan due to good engineering, design, reliability, and resale, but I gotta admit that over the top styling looks like crap and the clean lines of the focus are really nice.
+Phrancis5 I like the styling on the Focus as well, but if my ST is indicative of what an RS is like I'd seriously consider Honda over the Ford.
yes... my thoughts exactly.
+Jason Sadler what do you mean by St abbe going for the Honda
Yeah that Honda is crazy looking
The 10th gen civic hatch looks much better.
Which one would you have now knowing about the head gasket problems and the veering steering problems that the rs has.
The focus' face looks like a vacuum cleaner !
Hell yeah cuz it sucks all that air in
+Mallel Morales haha
+Jean V is that a good thing . because it looks awesome
+Random Guy Thanks! There is another Type R vs RS tech specification video on the channel where the weight is compared in more detail.
Honda needs to fire the 12 years old designing this car...
Eric Fling they did, and now the 2018 civic looks better.
I had a wrx STI, that I sold a few months ago, and the I bought one
Type
r, having tried focus, I can openly(frankly) help you if you have a
question on these 3 cars . I have had 3 VTEC in the past, and I
definitely Fan again and again of Japanese cars and not for nothing.
Hi guy yesterday i saw my black type r she is just too agressive and look wtcc .
Deeply tomorrow.
Franck.
+Franck Martins Bet you're excited!
I've been hearing of the Focus RS issue of going through a set of tires extremely fast because of the awd system and the torque vector, and that's not including the drift mode being used.
always honda because it is FUN and RELIABLE.....i most definitely don't want to spend all that money for one and a few years there's a major problem with it all for the sake of it's a bargain or I can drive it in any weather I rather have something like the type R which I know it's reliable and fun to drive but yeah it might not be for every weather condition but I least anytime I want to get in it I know it will start up everytime and last for years
Lmao! Whatever helps you sleep at night.
True would also be worth more re sale time
+gentlemonsterkennels To be fairly honoust, the quality issue this guy adresses is correct. Anybody who is into cars knows the quality of Honda vs any other make. If you deny that fact you might want to get education on that.
+Mike Hunt
That's cool. That 0-60 time is just way too slow.
+gentlemonsterkennels Get schooled son. Can't wait to see videos of focus crashing into crowds of people.
Why does the Civic type R look like a Prius with a $200.00 body kit?
IMHO, the Type-R design looks like a toy car
+nandosuke nanda Right out of HotWheels
***** exactly what i meant
+nandosuke nanda
Funny, that's exactly what I thought about the Ford under the bonnet :D
why are the windshield wiper doing that out of sink?
Focus RS hands down. Styling, practicality, and enough power to throw around and have fun. You can also actually see out the back window in this car
I have to agree with you, having recently driven the 2016 CTR it's amazing but simply too harsh for UK roads, plus R button is redundant on 80% of our roads, the other 20% are motorways.
Props for not doing a pointless 0-60 between a FWD and AWD like so many do.
Peace
Remove the spoiler on the civic, and you got a prius. 😂
A wide body Prius !!😂😂
+Richie U.
Sweet a racing car with 60mpg I'll take that!
+Habo Hamo a Liberty Walk version of the Prius 😂😂😂
It's gay all around bruh
Richie U. 😂😂👌
I thoroughly enjoyed this review, very objective and unbiased.
+hamronD73 Thank you very much! Happy you liked it.
"Both cost the same." You can end the video right there. You get so much more for your money with the Ford. It's the winner before you even get behind the wheel. The only people that will buy the civic are Honda fanboys.
+Cuseball121 And the only people that will buy the Ford are enthusiasts of flat brim hats and energy drink aficionados.
+koopatroopa187 I mean if they suddenly decide to trade in their Subarus, maybe.
or, the people who appreciate true driving feels and a bit more rawness in a car, RS might as well be an automatic too, already does 90% of the work for you
+Rafael Favela damn you Honda fanboys stay butthurt. I've never read a less intelligent statement.
Both fabulous cars, And totally different characteristics 👍
sounds like the RS won because it was more "practical", while the honda is more fun to drive. who buys a turbo hatch to be practical?
+hao duong He's just giving pity points to the Civic. The Focus is better in almost every way.
+hao duong hahaha, hatchbacks were made to be practical?! these aren't 2 door rear mid engine sports cars we're talking here dude..
+hamronD73 Lol saying that a car has to be 2 door and mid engine to be an impractical sports car..so silly
I prefer the RS would love to see them race on track to see who would have the quickest lap times
+Adam S We tried really hard to make that happen for this video, but logistically we couldn't make it work. We will try again another time.
Please do. I've been waiting for that for a while. Wonder why anyone hasn't done it yet.
If enough people want interior comparisons we still have the footage and could do a video on it.
type r looks better. I like the funky vibe more
can you check real 0-60mph time? I heard focus is much slower than ford states (5.5s to 60mph) and civic when launched from 2nd gear can even do 5.2 sec to 60mph. thanks
rs is not only the better all rounder, mount-tune will take this car to 450 bhp and keep the warranty, but you got to think resale too.. look at the previous models.
type r after 5 years loses 60% of its value
RS after 5 years loses 10% of its value
a good Sierra RS is worth 3 times its original value
yup
Maybe in the UK, but in America the type r is worth way more. Even the ones that are now20 years old
+Ose93da just had a look on auto trader USA and the civic type R sell's for the same pathetic price over there as it does in Europe however looks like they cost more on the US market in the first place. I did see the new type R on the track the other day and it was fast for a family car.
Mountune is 375ps. Where the hell did you get 450 from!?
yes stage 1 is 380 bhp but stage 2 is aiming to be 450+ bhp that's why they have released the 500 bhp gearbox upgrade. turbo upgrade is coming soon !
lmao the bodykit of the Type R, looks like home-made Homer-mobile :D
The Type R looks like a SI and an insight tried to abort their hideous drunken lovechild but it escaped and is on sale now at your local honda dealer.
you mentioned the N ring for the civic but wasn't that one a heavily modified version ?
Nope. I spoke with the engineers on the cars launch. All standard apart from the fitment of a roll cage (on bushings so it didn't add rigidity) and the removal of the air conditioning unit to counter the wait of the cage.
+Inside Lane oh okay thank you, also awesome response time !!
+Cricket Just Cricket Thanks! We try to get back to most people with answers within a day or so.
Maybe you should write your thoughts down before hand, this is all over the place.
which one will win in Drag and track? golf r Honda type r RS Focus
as a honda fan and a ford hater i can admit that the ford was put together better..
I love my Honda but I couldn't buy the type r. I feel like I'd have to immediately do mods to tone down the exterior. the rs definitely seems like the idea car for a more mature driver
+knyght krawlr plus honda seriously needs step it up and make it awd or rwd
+Jonathan Torres another rwd Honda would be sweet. Honda's awd systems really seem to be lacking, might be a different story in a couple, hatch or sedan though
not really
+knyght krawlr it's a sports car cmon
In addition t performance and interior quality, how is the reliability/repair history of the Ford RS? Anyone care to comment? Thanks.
+Nick Larson I'm glad you liked it. Lots of planning and time went into it.
Both are absolutely amazing
You sound like you were paid by Honda to make the Type R sound like a better car.
Your sound like someone who has never driven one. No journalist is paid by the manufacturer.
buuurrrnnnn hahahaha
did you watch this video? he preferred the rs over the type r idiot...
+Michael M Apply ice to burned area.
+raidacaipo No he preferred the Type R under good conditions. Under everyday (slippery) conditions he preferred the RS. The reality is the RS is inherently a more capable car especially on the track.
both mental cars love them both.
Something MAJOR you all overlooked. Ford Focus' have a SOLID reputation for being lemons. Honda Civics are SOLID examples of reliability. Ask any mecanic.
+TheBigDanois except these aren't the base models that Joe Blow buys. these performance models have very little in common with their econobox siblings.
agreed I'm not Import fanboy or anything I just don't trust Fords.
Newer hondas aren't as reliable as they used to be, plus a turbo 4 cyl will not last long
Rather trust a turbo 4 from Honda than Ford.
Yes you were proved to be correct! Head gasket problems on the Focus RS.
What a time to be a driver or hatch fan! Two unbelievably sick cars. I have the focus st (2015) and I love it for reasons that apply to both of these, Focus look and feel but front wheel drive excitement.
+Brandon Elliott It is a real hot hatch renaissance.
+Jay Lemoyne I doubt your FWD car has the tech that the Type R does. Don't just generalise. Also, not everywhere gets weather like Canada.
+Jay Lemoyne fail comment.
Fanastic, balanced review. Really liking your work! .....new sub from me!
+Matt Crick Thank you very much!
that Honda is foul looking
yoo😂😂😂
About how much does a Civic Type R cost when it is new?
God that Honda looks so ugly, especially compared to the handsome RS.
Great video and I totally understand what this guy is saying, I'd still go for the Honda though because I'm a driver and wouldn't want the car to do all the work, that's down to my ability and talent
I knew the Ford would kick its ass. That Type R is so ugly it hurt my eyes.
+Justin Dewey they're both ugly as hell
+Justin Dewey Dude stfu
***** LMFAO are u crazzy like who ?
*hurts
Handling.
Thanks for the review, but please next time include one of the most important factors that ALL (and I do mean ALL) reviewers neglect ... what is the HP to weight ratio? It's a sports car, this is the most important number you can provide viewers who are into sports cars. After some research the Honda is 9.9 lbs per HP (3050 lbs / 306 HP), the Ford is 9.8 lbs per HP (3459 lbs / 350 HP).
type R
definitely
only if you are going to the store, but if you want to go fast get the rs.
+Gaston Reyes fuck off leave ur shitty car standing if you've even got one
+Gaston Reyes fix or repair daily... nah I'm good lol
+Davillain maybe I would agree if this was 15 years ago, but you need to wake up and stop giving excuses. this is a German made car and completely out classes the type r. I love both cars but speed and control wise the rs takes the lead. still I don't understand why the civic is stuck with front wheel drive, it is the only weakness in that car
good video. nice and kept me watching till the end.. new sub.. keep it up.. looking to get a RS next year get rid of my GT86
+thatonebeone Thank you. You have great taste in cars by the way.
Ford is nowhere near as reliable as honda. I'd go type r
Newer hondas arent as reliable as they were before either, especially not this one with a turbo 4 cyl. The engine wont last long
Right, because there's so many years of data on how reliable the brand new Honda turbo engines are. Don't talk out your ass.
@@javirt6749 but he ford proved to be reliable,as expected ;-) blown gaskets, now thats reliability!
I'd take the Type R. I'm not incredibly knowledgable on them, but my heart was stolen by the 2010 R, so I'd probably go for that instead.
No sh-awd in the civic, and it looks like shit. Dissapointing
The Type R is so ugly.
Wouldn't the better comparison be Focus ST vs Civic Type R?
+Gimmi J They don't compete directly. If you were to compare lap times and what technology each car employs, the Type R in akin to RS, the Cupra. Being FWD is just a formality in this case. Different means to the same ends.
Do you think the next type R will be all wheel drive. I think it is a strong possibility
+S Waugh Yeah, it would be a good move. Whilst this Type R is a great bit of engineering, adding more power would be difficult with FWD.
+Inside Lane technology advances so never know
+S Waugh I doubt it.
I'd throw snow tires on the RS and have a blast sliding around in the snow doing AWD drifts feeling like I'm on a rally stage
Would you have the same 4 season fun with the Civic?
+Dee Jay Obviously not, but Europe doesn't see as much snow as many places.
35% loss? I don't think so. My escalade AWD ESV with 24s has 25% loss. Focus RS has 20% loss maximum
So did honda ever say anything new about the type r coming to America ?
+10thsalvador Nothing as yet. I'm sure you already know that USA will not get this car, but the next Type R that arrives.
A nice fair video - a lot seem to be one sided but this video seems genuine and honest.
I'm a Honda man usually but can't deny the Focus is (for value terms) the better choice of car. Not sure which I'd pick if I had the chance to be given one to be honest.
Which one is faster on the track?
+gentlemonsterkennels It was logistically impossible to get both on the same track at the same time one that day. I have driven both on tracks and think the Type R is the better track car, but as for what is the fastest I think it would depend on what type of track.
+Inside Lane
You are saying type r is a better track car, in your opinion of course.
On a wet track I think the RS can really take an advantage, but in the dry on a technical circuit I think the Type R has a chance.
front wheel drive vs all wheel drive...the civic never had a chance stock vs stock! Both are sweet rides. I'd own either.
Is it true that the Type R won't be sold in the States?
Yes, Honda stated that it won't appeal to the people in the states and there making a different type for the people in the states
ONYXgamerninja Won't appeal? I swear, we have more Honda's in the States, than anywhere else in the world.. And the car communities are massive here... I don't know why they think it wouldn't sell......
+Caleb Youngs The type r WILL be coming to the US, but it will not be this design. The US design will be based off of the current gen civic model.
Activ8Music So then, it will be the same motor, same turbo and all that? Just different chassis?
Presumably, yes. But nothing has been officially announced, so we don't really know what the specs will be. The only thing that is confirmed is that the US is in fact getting the type r.
No lap times?
Want to see the RS times around a few tracks! No reason for it to take so long...Randy, where are you?
+LJ Balongue Car are only just being given to journalists for their full 1 week road tests. For the moment everyone has only had the RS when Ford has run events.
great video but I think Ford aimed the RS more at the WRX than they did at the type R just my opinion but keep up the outstanding videos thank you
The Type-R is very good but the comment related to Honda put 306hp on the front wheels seems a little bit exaggerated like it was a new achievement.. remember the old focus RS? The first hot hatch to put 300hp on the front wheels ? :)
+Diogo J Silva Yes, but it was a bit of a torque steering monster at times. The point I made is that Honda have managed to tame it.
And 'Drift Mode' ??? Shouldn't it be 'Gymkhana Mode' or was that too long to fit on the button??
+Daveros Garrett Gymkhana is just one discipline of drifting.
+Inside Lane Gymkhana has nothing to do with drifting.
type r still waiting in america are they coming here????
+arman aquino word is it's a year or 2 out... Won't have the same design as the one you see in this video it will look more like the N/A Civics that are currently being sold.
Perfect characterization of these two cars' souls.
He did not answer my questions, which were "what is the gas milage rating and what is the warrenty on these cars"? JB
I wonder how different the USDM Type-R will be from the Euro. Have another year to wait to see.. Gah
+TopShotta Very different. It is an all-new chassis based on 10th gen Civic. Likely to have the same engine though. That car will make its way to Europe too.
two cars. one video. timeline - introduce. drive one. drive the other. compare and summary. this chopping around between them, dialogue here, dialogue there, i ended up getting lost which car you were talking about. planning !! :)
