don't worry about who's copying who...just lay back in your chair and let this take you to another place....somewhere in your mind where you aren't comparing things...just let it flow - maggot brain is a state of mind...
I remember back in 1991, when I was 20 (and so was the song) and I was hanging out with friends, getting wasted. And now, I am almost 40 (so ist the song ;-)) and I gotta admit...: Damn, the 70s rocked!!!
Maybe its the light. Maybe he's just thinner than I'd ever seen him, back in the day. Its just really uncanny that Mike took on such a look, as well as a sound! For sure, WE DO LOVE US SOME EDDIE HAZLE, so its not hard to understand how Mike got sooo soooo into pocket with Eddie's Spirit/Soul and projected him so thoroughly. As we say, when we are showing praise and appreciation for the presence of our ancestors when they show through for us, "Ashe!"
Bernie was on fire 2...Young kid funkadelic simply rips it!!!brings tears 2 my eyes everytime i hear it being played so amazingly well like this.heavenly
Sucks when you remember seeing him twice and not really fully understanding how AWESOME and INNOVATIVE what your hearing really is. How special and rare yet made everyone around me stop and not make a noise while they played this song. It freaked me out but I was 12, not allowed in these places. However wherever I had cousins we were gonna sneak in regardless. If it were not for our young perverted minds we would have just stayed home and watched "the gong show". Thank God for youtube for it allows me to remember how stupid we were for taking such a risk seeking in NOT for the music but for the fine women (fans) who wore no bra and often no drawers.....
I agree with Catlin 11. I listen to this and other versions, some of which I saw. Funkadelic wasn't about any one performer, it was about the show, the sounds and the attitude.
By far, the best version.... AWESOME play. I can feel his emotions...... very powerful play. I don't know why, but every time I'm listening to this song, I'm thinking of my late mother... God rest her soul.
If NOT angry definitely RUDE. I don't expect you or anyone to have the same taste/preferences with me. Accept that people are different. Can you imagine how boring the world would have been if everyone had the same taste? Yes Hazel's play is great, but this particular one, has a bigger impact to me. Does that make me wrong? NO, just makes me Different from you. But based on your Medical Diagnosis, I need to clean out my ears!!!!
Indeed, that world would be boring, and my comment was merely reflecting my opinion. Rude? Perhaps, but not out of context in my opinion. You stated that this version is the best, meaning better than all versions, including Hazels, the guy who came up with this masterpiece to begin with. I consider that to be a rude statement. If you can't stand to have you opinion criticized, then why would you express it in the first place?
MAGGOT BRAIN, EVERYTIME I HEAR IT ,IT SENDS CHILLS THRUOGH ME !! I DONT CARE IF MIKE OR EDDIE IS PLAYING IT ,ITS AN ALL TIME GUITAR SOLO CLASSIC!!!! "SERGIO"
He was 16 when George (actually Gary Shider and Boogie) saw him play Maggot Brain at a party in cleveland given by Ed Sparks. He was about 17 going on 18 when he joined Funkadelic in 1975. I think his first performance with them was in DC in 1975. Knee Deep was recorded in 78/79 time frame.
How many keyboards is Bernie playing?! He's like the Beethoven and Mozart of funk! I love this song. You feel all kinds of emotions with this..love, lust, anger, pain, sorrow..it just gives me chills.
please yall dont forget george found this guy playin maggot brain note for note when he was 17 mind you .... this is the song that got him recruted into the funk mob ....ok bye
are you kidding me Michael Kidd Funkadelic played the hell out of Maggot Brain not to take nothing from Eddie but try listening to the Funkadelics other music and pay close attention to the guitar playing on songs such as knee deep and ask yourself can Michael hampton play with the best of any guitarist out there he is one of the all time best guitarist along with Eddie Hazel R.I.P.
They’re both great, but Eddie was more of a writer than Hampton. You can’t even compared their body of work. Most of Hampton’s work thats noticeable are solos. He comes from a more metal/hard rock angle and definitely as far as tone too. Eddie was groove, soul, funk and rock with lots of feeling. Michael Hampton’s biggest career hurdle has been that he’s been in Eddie’s shadow from day one as a kidd. Would’ve been interesting to see what he would’ve done with a project he was the main force behind, but lots of the P-Funk crew were used beautifully by George, but didn’t have enough on their own to do the same level of work. Lots of talent and work went into those songs. Definitely not just George, but he was the mastermind that made it all work. He took these crazy parts and made history. I feel for the Kidd though. He’s amazing and deserves to be appreciated for his own work. That said, he definitely admired Eddie and kept his legacy alive. If he weren’t playing Maggot Brain after Eddie left then that song wouldnt have had the legacy it does. There’s a Funk video podcast called Truth in Rhythm that interviews funk players. Lige Curry (bassist for P-Funk All-Stars, etc. and Michael’s cousin) talks about Hampton leaving (basically running away) his parents as a teenager and joining the group. The fact that he lived and made that music is incredible. He’s still doing it, though he left George for good it seems
It's hard to hear and appreciate a cover of something that is burned deep into you brain and soul. I can't think of Eddie;s version and still appreciate this. Mike didn't copy. MIke took the song down a somewhat enw road. It's good. I'll leave it at that. I'm really glad this song is being forgotten.
sloburnjo That's how Michael Hampton got invited to join Parliament Funkadelic. George was in a club in Cleveland watching this 15 year old kid playing Maggot Brain, note for note!! Hence the name Kid Funkadelic!!
@grimes1 Just a reminder, but Eddie wrote this song when he was 17 yrs old. Eddie's version was fluid because he was able to tap into some inner demons that gave him such an emotional range that he was able to translate through his guitar. If I'm not mistaken Mike was 17 when he was hired by George to replace Eddie.
@jabon323 Gotta give credit where credit is due, Eddie Hazel introduced us to the maggots of the mind, but Michael Hampton embraced them and made them his own. I have heard no better version of this song and it so demonstrates Kidd Funkadelic's talent.
This is a good place for your son to start. It is full of pentatonics and some relative majors. A simple chord progression over a 6/8 dirge. At fifteen, I cut my teeth on this one.
They said, musically it couldn't be done, but here it is indelibly etched in time forever. Maggot Brain is a master piece. George Clinton gave The late great Eddie Hazel free rain on this track, he simply said play and this is the end result. This musical composition is a timeless masterpiece.
My son is 4 months old now. I feel sorry for him and I'm mad 'bout myself that I forgot about this song. Starting from tomorrow, this will be part of his education
in response to krystan bray,i agree with your post. it looks like eddie at 6:03 during the flash you can see he facile structure and it looks like eddie! hes also thinner than michael and in houston "78"he wore a chain and was shirtless.able to see he body frame again eddie was thin. just trying to figure.only way to really know is if you were there( wish i was) but was my favorite song since early "72". yes i was a hippy and loved everyday of it R.I.P. EDDIE! ( bluesyj22 )
I was going to post, then noticed that Frank Warner said the same exact thing I was thinking. It's a great song, Mike is a good player, but it seems he made a living because of one man, Eddie Hazel, the creator.
The funny thing is, that in knowing Mike Hampton personally, this video looks nothing like him. If it IS Mike, he really got so into pocket, he actually took on Eddie's appearance! It actually "Looks" Like Eddie Hazle, as well as being a "Strikingly reminiscent of his classic performances of Magot Brain, for which he will always be fondly remembered.
Dude what are you on about. This is Mike. You're going on about Funkadelic but you cant grip the fact that this is Mike..? Come on now. MIKE KILLED THIS SHOW SOME RESPECT
@@PannduhHD reread the post. Notice that I said, If it IS Mike he got so into pocket he even looked like Eddie. That IS a respectful compliment for both Mike and Eddie,. After all, Eddie obviously was the inspiring progenitive energy that inspired Mike's playing. Like I said, I do know Mike, and it looks like Eddie, Mike or not. That's my perspective and I am entitled to have it, as you are yours. The difference is, I shall recline from any "belittling" remarks on your account as I shall live respectfully with you and your perspective... I would appreciate the same.
When this song was created, George Clinton asked the young Eddie Hazel to play the first part of the song as if someone had just told him his mother had died. He then exhorted him to play the latter part as if someone had walked up and told him it was all a lie, and that his mother was NOT dead, but alive...the young guitarist came through supernaturally if you ask me.
he loved to play guitar. He made that instrument an extention of himself, and he spoke when he played...What will you say, and how will you say it when you play your guitar?
Why do every feel that Michael has to play like Eddie? Mike bring his own unique technical stlye to P-Funk. George was not looking for clones to play like each other He wanted a variance of players with thier own style. Boogie don't play like Billy Bass. Nor does he play like Skeet. Tyrone Lampkin don't drum like Tiki nor do Jerome drum like Dennis Chambers. The point being Mike brought what George was looking for at the time when he was recruting a guitarist. Mike is very good!
Looks like Eddie Hazel but its Michael Hampton. That's MH sound, more metal. The great Eddie Hazel is more acid rock and a shitload more emotion. There's another live version thats light years better.
In the early 2000s Prince was doing small venues and made a stop at a night club. He asked if the DJ had any funk music, the DJ replied no, Prince took away all of his records and told him how can you play me and not have any funk music. The DJ promised to add funk music to his collection. 😂
don't worry about who's copying who...just lay back in your chair and let this take you to another place....somewhere in your mind where you aren't comparing things...just let it flow - maggot brain is a state of mind...
This stuff was so ahead of it's time.....it now still sounds otherworldly.........these geniuses cannot be copied!
Rock bott om
It was and is great but ahead of it's time it wasn't. Hendrix was doing it a decade earlier.
I seen Eddie play it at Cobo....it was a religious experience......beyond words.
The 1979 show was the greatest performance of all-time. I was there!
I saw them play this song in the Oakland Coliseum in 1973. I was 14 years old... awesome!
I remember back in 1991, when I was 20 (and so was the song) and I was hanging out with friends, getting wasted.
And now, I am almost 40 (so ist the song ;-)) and I gotta admit...:
Damn, the 70s rocked!!!
This guy was only 19 .I graduated in 79 we call this music to get your sh-t together by.
One year from my last review and still haven’t found a guitar solo that can touch MAGGOT BRAIN.

Stellar live version. Michael is laying it down, doing true justice to the original studio version. Cheers!
music will never ever be the same again.....
IT AIN'T THE SAME NOW!
Was at this show...I saw Mike Hampton with that flying v..and from then on I had to get one...I got it years later... Fantastic Show!!!

Well said! I grew up in Cleveland and a local station played Maggot Brain midnight EVERY Saturday.
Flying V sounds timeless & brilliant .
prince wanted to do this song live too bad he never went out there and did it I would have love to see how prince would have did this tune
Eddie Hazel we miss you SOUL BROTHER play your guitar with the angles now.
eddie created THE SONG BUT MIKE IS THE KIDD WHICH MEANS EDDIE IS THE FATHER. MIKECRRIED THE TORCH THAT EDDIE LIT. MUCH LOVE TO BOTH.

Chill out a bit..... put your head under a cold tap 1st. You'll feel better. PEACE man....
Yeah, typing out a couple of lines of text must make me a real angry individual. Try to come up with a relevant reply next time, buddy. Peace!

"Play like your momma just died" and that is want Eddie did. I weep when I hear this!
good job
This is what it sounds like when Angels cry
Damn!!!!!!!! Dude is a helluva of guitarist, pretty sick
Eddie created this in studio it is HIS INSPIRATION, Michael woodshedded to this deconstructed it _ he knows it blind. inpiration / aspiration
