Axiom Funk - Pray My Soul w/ Eddie Hazel

  • Resurrected by Bill Laswell from the studio cutting room floor, this is Eddie Hazel at his best. The liner notes credit Grace Cook as the guitarist, but as any Funkateer knows, that's Eddie's mom's name, used to ensure she'd get the royalties. Bernie Worrell is on keyboards, and the mix is by Bill Laswell.

Yes I knew Eddie personally!! My man. He was one of the greatest supporters of me and my drumming. I was sitting in at a club in Elizabeth N.J. and when I came down from stage, he walks up to me and asks did I want to go there again and jam with him!! We played Standing on The Verge and Maggot Brain together. The most amazing thing about Eddie was not his lead guitar playing but his rhythm guitar playing which was so phat, and full of energy. Eddie loved my finger control technique. He introduced me to George because he wanted me in the band, but I declined because I was playing with Donald Byrd at the time. I always wanted to meet and play with Jimi Hendrix, but he passed before I could hook up with him. Playing with Eddie was the next best thing and highlight of my life. He did his best to carry on the legacy of Jimi. I think he did it justice. That was real good brother, really miss him.

There's players who are technical & who have tons of talent, but there are far less guitar players who have raw emotion & pure soul pouring out of their finger tips. Eddie Hazel to me is easily one of the greatest. I'd rather listen to this 1 track than listen to the entire Steve Vai catalog, or also Joe Satriani's catalog. This is great!

@asistaatpeace you are truly blessed! I just don't understand how people could overlook this man with so much emotion that pour out of his playing. Pray My Soul is starting to effect me like "Maggot Brain" and I love his beautiful voice in "California Dreamin". Eddie was in a class all by himself and will always be "King Funkadelic".

This man was literally ignored by white radio. I'm just now discovering him because of TH-cam. I grew up on Jimi and bands like Deep Purple, Carlos Santana and the like. Jimi said he wanted to get between the notes, sounds like Eddie and Jimi were on the same planet together. This is really excellent music.

i just started to play guitar and all i knew was jimi hendrix, slash, jeff beck, jimmy page as the best guitarist ever. till i heard funkadilc maggot brain by accident. i just fell in love with da song. man it blew my mind. now i heard this song and from 'the bottom of my soul" eddie instantly became my fav guitarist but im not gonna say he is da best cuz like eddie i never heard of him till today. makes me wonder who else is out there. i wish i can sound like eddie when i play tho.

Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin
From The Bottom of My Soul - Eddie Hazel
Echoes - Pink Floyd (Has two solo's first is a more kick you up the ass sorta solo while the second is pretty much a dreamy extended blues jam)
Time - Pink Floyd (Not as long as the others listed but probably one of the most emotional solo's I have ever heard, absolutely killer tone.)
    Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun
    Enjoy Bro
