The Object of Faith is Not a Force
A true believer in God should rest his faith on the Word of God. The object of faith is the Word of God, where Christ is found. Our faith rests on Christ of the Word because the authority of God Himself is speaking. But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of the covenant of Grace."

This is a great word of TRUTH. I have seen myself how people in WOF are taught to believe in themselves and not God. Their "faith" is perverted into whatever they desire or think is right, not the almighty, omniscient and eternal will of God. That is exactly what God led me to understand before coming here. I was caught up in WOF for years because I wanted to be, but it just never fit with the entire context of the Bible and the Gospel. God help us have discernment to know the TRUTH. Those who are blind will not see but God will deliver all who come to Him in humility seeking this truth. RE: those who are in error, I avoid them. I do not publicly rebuke or engage them. I pray for them to find the truth of God's Word and the Gospel of Christ as their focus.

This is a pretty sloppy piece of apologetics. He takes issue with the "gnostic notion" that the real you is the spirit. Nonsense. Christian theologians have debated this issue for centuries, and even Billy Graham acknowledges this. billygraham.org/answer/do-we-have-both-a-soul-and-a-spirit/ Why do people insist on throwing out the word "gnostic" when it doesn't apply? All you have to do is read the Wikipedia article on Gnosticism to see that it bears no resemblance to Word of Faith theology.
Dr. Tsoukalas then misrepresents what Kenneth Hagin was saying when he said that the believer is as much an incarnation as was Jesus of Nazareth. He wasn't deifying man. He was referring to the fact that God the Holy Spirit comes to live in human flesh when one is born again. That's orthodox Christian theology. The word "incarnation" means "in the flesh", and in theological terms it's referring to God in the flesh. Jesus was God in the flesh in his identity, but when the Holy Spirit comes to live in the believer it is "an incarnation". In the 19th century many ministers referred to the born again experience as an incarnation as a way of emphasizing the reality of the indwelling of the Spirit. In his early years of ministry Kenneth Hagin was influenced by the writings of many of these men and those who followed them.
He then ends up quoting a lot of Kenneth Copeland statements that I won't defend, but Kenneth Copeland wasn't the leader of the Word of Faith movement. Kenneth Hagin was, and he didn't agree with many of the things that Kenneth Copeland taught. After building a straw man based on what Copeland has said he concludes that the WoF movement isn't biblical. It seems to me that if you want to know what a movement teaches you should take what the leader of the movement teaches rather than piecing together a non-existent homogeneous belief system based largely on things that the leader of the movement doesn't believe.

Dr. Steve - I'm a Presenter on a UK Christian radio show, with 105 countries reached every day. My concern is that the management has now joined charitable status with Acorn International Ministries, who are under the auspices of 'Word of Faith'. Now in the last 3 months, I've not discerned anything concerning the 'prosperity gospel'... should I nevertheless still be concerned about this association? The people in authority are Steve & Ann Laidlow. Do you have any particular information on 'Acorn International Ministries'? The station has recently added the awful Joyce Meyer to a list of our recorded shows, which does worry me immensely.

Hi, 2yrs later.. I have found too in my city and country these heretical preachers purvey their gunk on "Christian" radio and television stations enmasse. The average (non descerning / new / babe) believer does not have a clue of the heresies they are sucked into. And long before they know, their foundation is ruined. Manny of these preachers call on the listeners to make/repeat some confessions and decrees and much of those utterances render the listener and enemy of God!

Excellent summary. Re: Christianity in Crisis, by Hank Hanegraaff. If you know of Steve, he has a long history teaching about cults, exposing their error, and serving Christ and His Church faithfully. I remember him when he was at Gordon-Conwell and appreciated his classwork, "field trips" and impact. Now, 20+ years later, living in an area saturated with Word of Life influences, I am happy to see Steve has already been here exposing the error. I hope he has some written material on it!

You're pointing out a criticism of the Word of Faith teaching that asserts faith is a substance. However, it's worth noting that Hebrews 11:1 does indeed use the term "substance" in relation to faith. It's important to clarify that the criticism might stem from a misunderstanding of Word of Faith doctrine. In this belief system, faith is seen as the means by which individuals receive what God has already promised or purchased through His sacrifice.
While you've mentioned various criticisms, it's important to engage in a scriptural debate to understand the basis of these beliefs. Every ministry may have some teachings that are open to interpretation or critique. However, it's essential to avoid labeling fellow believers as heretics without due consideration, a stance you have not taken.

After 2 years without an answer, I will myself reply, and to whomever.
Any doctrine (a word I despised when held captive in the WoF -- as i also did the word "denomination") is not to be based on one Scripture.
Do you give everything that is asked of you to whomever asks, as the Word commands? If so, and if you own a house, car, and have any savings, please give them to me. Mt.5:42 commands it. Get it?
Doctrines are correctly obtained by assembling all the Scriptures on the subject, then taking into account the audience it was spoken or written to, the culture at the time, the overall natures of both God and man, whether something was implied literal or instead hyperbolic or a parable, experiences....
Generally speaking, when we isolate a Scripture and use it as a basis for one of our personally believed upon doctrines/beliefs, it is the enemy of our souls continuing his veil building over our heart.

He's taking Kenneth Hagin out of context. He was quoting E. W. Kenyon regarding the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In Kenyon's day it was common to refer to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as an incarnation, which means "God in the flesh". This doesn't mean that we're as much God as Jesus. It means that it's just as true that God the Holy Spirit lives in us as it is that God became a man in the person of Jesus. Also, Gnosticism's error wasn't in the belief that man is a spirit. Their error was in promoting the dualistic view of spirit as good and matter as evil, and the only way to escape the evil physical universe and return to the realm of pure spirit where the unknowable god dwells was through the secret knowledge of the Gnostic teachers. There's absolutely no similarity here with WoF. This is the logical fallacy of guilt-by-association.

From what it sounds like, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong, Word of Faith is the exact opposite of Reformed theology. Whereas Reformers rest on the sovereignty of God and there being major borders on whether or not man has true free will, Word of Faith seems to say, we are the sovereign ones and God has bound to do what we say.

    • @JewandGreek
      @JewandGreek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Word of Faith people do not believe that they are sovereign. They believe that God is Sovereign but they see different implications to God's sovereignty from the reformed crowd. Just as we're saved by faith upon hearing the word of God, we are healed by believing the word of God regarding healing. That doesn't mean that we're sovereign in healing any more than we're Sovereign in Salvation., Reformed people believe God is Sovereign in Salvation in the sense of predestination.

Not trying to be mean, but to put forth a critique of the Word of Faith Movement in 7 minutes is just this side of ludicrous. I am not a WOF person, but grew up in and around it since 1975. I was part of the Way Ministry cult of V.P. Wierwille in 76 and 77 (ironically, his mantra was “The truth of the Bible fits like a hand in a glove!) for 2 years, and was mercifully delivered to cycle through nearly every major Pentecostal and charismatic denomination as well as 9 non-denominational church communities. What I have learned is this: There has been a restorational movement of the Holy Spirit working deliberately since M. Luther’s 95 critiques of the R.C. Church (1517), progressively restoring truth and practice to the church for 500 years. This is a fact of church history. There have been numerous waves of the Holy Spirit’s working among humanity, restoring the understanding of holiness, divine inspiration of scripture, the gift ministries, the 5-fold ministry, church leadership, (emerging now is a return to doing church according to 1 Cor. 12 and 14) and on and on. In each “movement” there has been truth revealed. But, humans being humans, we go off to pendulum swings and emphasize things that God isn’t emphasizing, and even teaching things that God hasn’t spoken and unfortunately we often only discover this with hindsight. There are truths that God has spoken, clearly indicated by Scripture enclosed within the WOF movement and to deny that (or claim that the best lie has the most truth) is equivalent to being a novice in the exegesis of the Scripture. The knee-jerk reaction, when finding that something being taught in one of these “movements” (such as the holiness, charismatic, Pentecostal) is not scriptural, is to just chuck the whole thing…throw the baby out with the bath water. I believe this is a direct result of not understanding that everything must be built upon the revelation of Christ as the foundation of all spiritual understanding, and the depth and breadth and power of a person’s ministry depends upon that person’s clarity of who Christ is, who and what the corporate Body of Christ is, and the degree to which they have actually submitted their lives, body, soul, and spirit to God and have been transformed in the “spirit of your mind” that a person may “prove” what the true will of God is. The Christ is a spiritual reality that can only be understood by the spirit. The carnal mind will get it wrong every single time: Rom 8:7 “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” This is why there are umpteen denominations out there today. I think it’s a bit disingenuous to suggest that you can take the WOF movement and make a case for its being completely bankrupt of truth. First of all, you’d have to go back to E.W. Kenyon and study his writings and his ministry in general to understand how the WOFaithers went off the rails. You make a number of points in your rejection of WOF that are fundamental to the scriptural revelation of the new birth and the restoration of the individual to the conscious experience of Christ. All human life originates in God. He didn’t make humanity out of nothing, He created the human being from His own being, literally breathed His life into Adam. If there is something about that life that is not an intrinsic component of God, somehow lesser than God in kind and quality (not speaking of God’s omni-attributes here) than you would have a real hard time trying to explain it, just on the basis of logic, for instance. Yet, that R.C. religious spirit jumps right on that and immediately says, “Oh my god, you are saying that you are God!!! This is the carnal mind’s response to a clearly revealed purpose of the Father in the restoration of humanity ("For me to live is Christ" and "It is no longer I that live" etc.). This is probably why It's been rarely heard in my experience in the last 40 years any preaching on the 17th chapter of John where he speaks of the seamless oneness that the Father is creating between His offspring and Himself. In any event, I’ve tried to make brief case for this: A 7 - minute rejection of the WOF movement is absurd. It is a very novice and likely naïve approach to understanding an authentic restorative intervention of the Father into the 20th century church; and finally, a major reason for error in nearly the whole scope of human learning, whether political, social, religious, etc., is not knowing history, in this case, the history of the church.

Lets take a look at evangelical culture and remind ourselves why the response to WOF churches is often so severe....1). Evangelical is TRUTH based. This means the priority of FAITH is culturally secondary. 2) Evangelicalism is positioned firmly to regard truth as objectivity in black and white, written Word. This means any acknowledgement that the Spirit of truth speaks verbally to a productive end is naturally considered a subjective exercise in positional conflict. 3) Evangelical theology, with its pervasive reformed influence, emphasizes the incapacity of humanity. Any suggestion of human capacity elevated beyond their cultural norms brings a tension many evangelicals find intolerable. 4) Evangelical theology does not place importance on the supernatural gifts. It is inherently unfriendly to any theology placing continuation of supernatural gifts as a priority in church life. 5) Evangelical theology stresses the sinful state of fallen humanity much more than the new creation of saved humanity. It therefore reacts violently when a church balances their theology toward the new creation. 6) Evangelicalism is averse to the inclusion of finances as a spiritual manifestation of divine blessing. Any priority of prosperity is therefore suspect by default. 7) Evangelicalism is gnostic in the sense of its priority to separate body and spirit. It therefore recoils at the idea that salvation of the body is intertwined with healing and salvation of the soul.

Just realized an interesting connection. Many of our founding fathers in the US were either deist or influenced by deism which was popular at the time which is defined as "one who believes in a Supreme Being who created the universe to operate solely by natural laws and after creation is absent from the world." Sounds like the word of faith movement is similar only it believes that God created the world to run on spiritual natural laws and then does not practice an intervention which is wrong and reflects an impersonal God who doesn't take care of his people. Very much opposed to this view and Jesus shows otherwise by his very existence! Should be Faith in Word (Jesus is the Word made flesh). All glory to God, not man!

Be cautious when preachers and teachers string together Holy Scripture to prove a point or create a doctrine. Study Church history and Christian doctrine. In addition, one cannot separate Hebrews 11:1 from Hebrews 12:1. Faith is an acquisition activator to get what we want, rather trusting in God to fulfill God’s promise and purpose. Thus, the great cloud of witnesses are those who trusted in God to fulfill the Will of God not personal gain.

I normally like Seedbed stuff, but this is polemic, not analytic, and at points, straight up dishonest. Man is a triune being: body, soul(mind), and spirit. That is not Gnostic, that is Biblical (1 Thes 5:23). Insofar as man has a spirit, he is like God who "is spirit" (John 4:24) (Gen 1:26). If Jesus, while on the cross, took on the sins of the world, which is Christian orthodoxy btw, why is it inaccurate to say he took on the nature of Satan, whom we see throughout the Bible, is identified with sin itself? I cannot vouch for anything Kenneth Copeland says, but it would seem these general ideas are far more scriptural we are lead to believe here.

Man is NOT a Trinity *as* God is.
God is a Trinity,Three PERSONS in one BEING.The Sublime Monotheism,in a Triangle of Supreme Love.
While man is just composed of body,soul/spirit(there is nothing different between a soul and a spirit its just the different word for the same thing) ,and of ,,intelect,,-*Imago Dei*.
Also man is NOT 3 persons, but one.
God is SINGLE and Simple, not made of parts, while man is made of many things, and thus complex.

Ok listen, Jesus never took on the nature of Satan! Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and for ever! His nature has never changed! He was the perfect lamb of God on the Cross. The perfect sacrifice for sin. He said it is finished while on the Cross before He died. Copeland teaches that He became as Satan and went to the burning side of Hell and was born again in Hell. That's a lie, and blasphemous. Word of Faith is in error for many reasons, one reason is that the object of their Faith is in their confession, the Bible teaches that the object of ones Faith is the Cross of Christ, in fact only Faith in Jesus Christ Crucified will allow the Holy Spirit to work in ones life. If your in the Word of Faith, you'd better run for your life.

The word of faith simply can not be castigated because of the abuse of some pastors and preachers. jesus came to restore man back to the state he was in before the fall. Why then did Jesus come, why did he offer salvation, was there ever the fall of man? What did jesus come to do? The epistles make it clear about the reason jesus came. My dear brothers and sisters of our lord Jesus Christ. If you are walking and see someone fall do you not run to help? We are human. We are flesh. Since our Father with the word made all that is.. man has been trying to know Him. So here we are 2014 and tell me which GROUP is right? Your is yes? This man here yes? No..
Nothing has changed since Yeshua left. With the 12,120,3000 people then just like now new what was REALLY the truth. What hurts is so many of us talk about a brother in Christ and we know just be looking and reading and watching videos if they are really of God. We don't have to see the heart for we know if TONGUES or healing or your a little god or rapture pre mid or post.. pick one. Just this alone means you are not of God you are of the (forgive me Father) of the devil.
So this man says some word of faith preachers use words to discribe faith is wrong. Yet in the other books other videos when they did preacher it just like its written ..hmm why is you only talk about this and not what they do get right? No wheres your video of how many times you preached wrong got it wrong? I dont care if you confessed your sin and Jesus forgave you and never remembers it..I still do and thats what matters yes? lol do you see?
What because they are in the light (so to speak) all can see where and when they get it wrong. Then they make sure they NEVER forget it. Yet they will never bring up the times they prayed it wrong said it wrong taught it wrong. You are not there masters and they do not ever have to answer to you only Jesus.
To watch and discern is wise. Yet your version of the truth is not what matters to Christ. Jesus said "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me"
Sorry how of the wisest of you offered prayer for them? So let me get this right.. they are falling away or really off (in your view) missing Jesus. Preaching and living worldly ways with riches or something to this effect and your Christ in you says?
Dont talk to me about sin and mistakes. You dont know me. I sin more then most. You watch me you read me and judgment follows. Yet the nights I stay on my knees which is almost every night and cry and weep to change to be like my savior my friend my brother my GOD. To see people like He does. To love the one I hate. I seek to be like Him. I confess I repent. You think in your world I have to confess to you? I have to let you know if I have and when? Sorry whats your job again?
Ask this man ..sorry how many hours days weeks did you spend before the lord on this? How many times did you reach out to this man and others like him? You will not like what you hear.

So, if I have improved symptons after healing prayer and the symptoms vanish, I'd better not discuss it with my doctor because the creator of the Universe has no power when I do that and it unravels a healing. Like God's wringing His hands in the courts of heaven. "Oh if only she didn't say that. Now my work has been destroyed.
James 14-16, Is anyone among you sick? find out when the next healing crusade coes to town. Take them there. Hopefully, the healer will pray over them. And the prayer of the healer will make them well, providing that the sick one has enough faith and has given the minimum amount of funds."
Noooo, this is what it really says. Are we so self-righteous and spiritually arrogant that we actually believe we're running the show?
the REAL James 5:14-16, Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord and the healer. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well."
Thank you Father, that whether we get it "just right" or not, your power is not compromised and YOU get the glory. Not Benny Hinn! I'm really thankful Lord, that you don't do things our way.
I was in terrible back pain. I asked my husband, who was about th say grace to ask God to heal me. My husband simply asked God to heal me. God did and it was instant. God healed without oil or fancy words or spiritual gymnastics. Who are we to even believe that God Almight can't heal without us?

Some are so intent on condemning the Word of Faith they failed to grasp or simply quote Romans 10:8-10.
It is the Word Faith which we preach, we confess with our mouth and believe with our heart for salvation. That is how faith works for the believer. As I believe therefore have I spoken said the Psalmist in his affliction vs 116:10.
We have the same spirit of faith, as it is written as I believe therefore have I spoken and as we believe therefore we speak
This revelation was revealed before the new covenant and long bet the Word of Faith Movement.
What if some do not believe? Shall that make the faith of God of no effect. God forbid.
If the blind lead the blind they both fall into the ditch. The Word of Faith is what we preach.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. How can they believe on him of whom they have not heard, how can they hear without a preacher, how can they preach except they be SENT.
      Grace and Peace!

I think he (Copeland) has strayed quite a bit from his beginnings and has a lot of incorrect perceptions. I haven't heard a lot of Hagin's teaching, but what I have heard seems correct. Obviously word of faith people will be targets of cessationists, Calvinists and non-charismatic folks, but as a whole their doctrines are pretty orthodox in nature. The little gods teaching has been blown out of proportion but we clearly are partakers of the divine nature and have become one with Father, Son and Spirit. I think it is unwise and unfair to lump everyone who fellowships within certain groups as all believing the same thing. This is true of Arminians, Calvinists, Inclusionists, Word of Faith, Catholics, etc.

Jesus was quoting Psalm 82:6, which if you read it, it says, "ye are gods, but you will die just like men.". Logically, that cannot be directed towards men. It is towards the principalities set over the nations, that are referenced in Ephesians 6:12. When you understand there is also the unseen world, part of the ALL things that will be brought under the authority of Christ (Ephesians 1:10), you will recognize that there are other polemics written against them in the OT as well.
That misunderstanding of who that verse is directed to leads to a lot of error. It is part of the basis the rabbis used to claim that Israel is the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. It was also part of John of Damascus' defense of iconography, and why he claimed it was okay to venerate saints.
(I'm not against icons, God gives us visual representations to help us remember his faithfulness all the time. However, the whole praying to the saints thing is nothing more than Westernized ancestor worship, which is part of the Levitical prohibitions. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, it was to the Father directly. When Peter wanted to build an altar to Moses, Elijah, and Jesus at the Transfiguration, the voice of God said, "This is my beloved son, listen to him" Matthew 17:5)
We are not the same essence as God. The created cannot be the same substance as the Creator. A thing cannot create itself. This is what John Chapter. 1 is all about. Jesus is he *uniquely* begotten. There is none other like him. He is God, we are not. We are adopted into his family, not begotten.
"Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us IN Christ to be holy and without fault IN HIS EYES. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself THROUGH Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who BELONG TO his dear Son."
And this next verse clearly explains where the work was done - it's always about blood atonement.
"He is so rich in kindness and grace that he PURCHASED our freedom with the BLOOD OF HIS SON and forgave us our sins."
