This was the era Rush was trying to play everything as fast as they could, perhaps trying to compensate for a departure from prog-like complexity, and the excessive tempo really ruined the groove of many songs. It got worse as it went on, from the Signals to the Power Windows tour, though by ASOIAH they had slowed down once again. Take Digital Man from 1983, for example th-cam.com/video/Mn4nnTIsHSU/w-d-xo.html .... TOO FAST, NO GROOVE and the shitty Wal/Steinberger basses of this era with lackluster tone and dynamics also didn't help. Rick/Jazz Bass or bust.

Power Windows the 2 shows I saw they seemed to be a tad more chilled. I just think live Signals sounds edgier especially with Alex live. And that's why I'll take live over studio
I have been listening to rush my whole 25 years of life and saw them live 5 times, and their unrealistic out of this world talent still blows me away. I know Rush isn’t the “greatest” rock band of all time but they are definitely the most talented rock band of all time and no one comes close!
This was a bloody amazing experience all 3 of them, in the UK didn't get the 3d thing maybe a joke? what a composition this song, signals, permanent waves cements the greatest 3 piece band ever period. They were on fire in the 80s

Saw this tour in '84. It was actually just like this performance here, full of life and energy. Probably one of the most memorable performances from them I can remember. Height of their Powers... Those stickflips by Neil look so effortless.
Raising my hand. SAW IT !! Olympic Center in Lake Placid September 1984. I was a Sophomore at SUNY Plattsburgh. Went with 4 of my Frat Brothers. This was my FIRST time seeing Rush. HUGE fan since PW. Too young to see PW tour in Albany. Missed MP tour at Glenns Falls CC because I was 15 and couldn’t get a ride or a ticket. Signals closest was in Syracuse. THIS was IT!! Olympic Ctr is very small. Perfect place to see the boys for the first time. Yes, they were amazing, blown away, all of the usual stuff everyone says. But seriously this was EPIC. I remember this song in particular because of the count Floyd intro. But what still blows me away to this day was actually seeing NP live. Being in the same room and watching him closely. Just staring at him work. On this song in particular. Not only is it an infinitely complicated song for even him to play, but the way he twirled his sticks like a master hibachi chef in perfect time to the song. I still can’t even comprehend how this is possible. Yeah, I was there….
One of my favorites of any of their documented live performances. Absolutely one of Neil’s most difficult parts, even without the stick tosses. Dave Thomas’ intro is perfect.

This was an incredible performance of this song...captured for our viewing pleasure...goes into my 'special' performance category of all things Rush on film...dont remember using my 3D glasses in PHX AZ...hopefully there is a 40th anniversary release next year that includes this entire show...that tape is conserved somewhere!🤘
This is one of my favorite live performances! They all just solo all the way thru and Neil’s drumming just really makes the song even more bad ass!! I saw this tour at Texas Jam in Dallas June 10th 1984! I told you about getting squirted with the fire hoses to get cooled off and I remember people passed out down on the floor. (From the partying and from the heat) I “thought” I remembered the 3D glasses, but I can’t remember what I saw… but I was partying pretty hard myself, so maybe I’ve just watched this video so many times, I’ve created fake memories in the blurriness of my past.. LOL! That was 40 yrs ago and nowadays, I can’t remember why I went in the kitchen.. LMAO! I just know they were excellent every time I saw them and I had a blast! Wish you could have seen them live!! Being a huge fan of Rush for almost forty-five years I still can't get over how great these musicians are, in my opinion Signals is really just as good as anything they ever did
Yup, I was there and it was amazing. Alex was incredible and Neil was as perfect as a drummer can get. Geddy was as always, the king of multi-tasking doing three to five things at the same time. It was an experience to say the least.
I was at this specific concert . Although they filmed it within a three day period, I was there on the Saturday, and Red Rider opened up for them. All concert proceeds went to the united way for the third show as I recall.
I was home on leave from the Navy. It just so happened RUSH was going to be doing a show at Market Square Arena during the time I was in town. So I called a buddy of mine from HS and we went to the concert. I can remember some parts better than others. But as the saying goes, "If you can remember it, then you weren't really there". But the 3D glasses made the Count Floyd video jump out at you. And for those that were on hallucinogenics that night, probably got one heck of a rush during this video. I stuck with finger-sized Fatty's of some really good pot! And I was able to acquire a reasonable facsimile of the concert T-shirt that I bought back then. I'd also like to speak to your your observations of their playing styles between then and S&A. Back then, their songs were all experiments to try and find the best RUSH. Whereas, S&A is an example of their wisdom and maturity from years of experience. 😎☮️
I went to the Wembley Arena gig on this tour. It was the second time I'd seen Rush perform, the first being the "Exit Stage Left" tour. I didn't have 3d glasses and assumed it was just a joke, but the concert was brilliant from start to finish.
Justin, just imagine it was songs like this, and the album Signals in particular that drove away so many legacy fans. To this day, I don’t understand it. They were just as explosive, experimental and progressive as their earlier work, but toned down the vocals a bit and added some more keyboards, and in this particular time, if it had keyboards, then it certainly wasn’t rock. Ugh! Signals, Grace and Power Windows was an incredible three record stretch.
Justin, yes, I saw the GUP tour, in the Maryland/D.C. area, at the Capital Center. There is actually a pretty popular Bootleg recording available of that show, which you can listen to on TH-cam. One thing that struck me, when I listened to it after all those years, was how fast they were playing the songs at that show. They were burning through a lot of those songs, especially the new ones, like they were trying to keep up with a Punk Rock audience or something! I don't know. They seemed to be having a blast, crushing that set, for sure! Great show, one of my favorite Rush albums!
As I said yesterday, I was at one of the two shows in Toronto that were recorded. I didn't see anything 3D and probably took the glasses off after about 30 seconds. "Count Floyd" was a character on the television show SCTV. It was immensely popular at the time. Count Floyd hosted "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre" at the fictitious SCTV network, which played B-list horror films. He was always trying to hawk 3D glasses to the television audience. I think it was all just a gag.
1st concert Tacoma Dome, WA. Holding on to the barrier between the crowd and the stage. Just to the right of Geddy. (Facing stage) Literally fighting for my life. The last time Rush did festival seating at any show I attended. I was 17. No glasses for me.
A rare use of a click track for Neil with the arpeggiator. I believe Red Sector A was the other. I saw this tour at MSG. My first of 37 shows throughout their career.
Rush is awesome. Being a fan since 2112 and seeing them five times, their concerts are incredible. Count Floyd from SCTV played by Joe Flaherty was the person on the back screen. Other appearances are made by the Trailer Park Boys, Jerry Stiller.(they never play Passage to Bangkok... LOL) South Park and others. The back screen is almost the 4th member of the band. You have to pay attention to it because you will miss something important. Check out the best back screen moments of Rush. I don't know if there's any one video but please try and check it out.🍻🇨🇦
I was at the concert.I was in 8th grade Went with a friend of mine. I didn't have 3D glasses. I saw them September 17 NYC at Madison Square Garden. A band called Fastway opened up for them. The Dracula guy is from SCTV comedy TV show- Count Floyd character
My first Rush concert was the Power Windows tour and it was great although I wasn’t a huge fan of that album, but the concert was a powerful experience for a young player trying to emulate Neil. RIP
I saw them on this tour - first time I ever saw Rush - July 6, 1984, at Richfield Coliseum (between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio). AMAZING concert... flawless. Gary Moore opened up for them (another excellent performance). Rush is ALWAYS on point, every time I have seen them.
They have been releasing 40th anniversary editions of different albums with live stuff to accompany them. I am holding out hope they will continue with Grace under pressure and include the songs that weren't on the original release. Count Floyd played by Joe Flaherty he used the character to host horror movies on TV. They only issued those 3d glasses for the concert they recorded if I'm not mistaken.
I wish they could release a version of this with more of the GUP songs. It's also a shame that there are no official recordings of the Signals tour. That setlist was a BANGER!
✋🏼🤘🏼I started my journey with these guys when I was 12 with Moving Pictures, but didn’t get to see them until this tour in New Orleans. Absolutely amazing! I don’t remember the 3-D glasses though,🤷🏼♂️ Also I was at the NO show when they taped “Turn the Page” for the Show of Hands album. Enjoy your content,keep up the great work!
I still have those glasses from this exact show. To be honest, I don't recall the glasses doing anything. I thought maybe it was for the rear projection just for the Count Floyd bit. But that was part of the spoof. Count Floyd was form SCTV and the 3D thing was part of the gag on the TV show. Plus the shot of the audience wearing the glasses...I think that was the money shot for the video...in my opinion.
That guy in the video was Count Floyd off of SCTV, a Canadian comedy show that spawned John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis and this guy Joe Flaherty among others. This is part of a skit where they do a parody of the old Vincent Price Saturday afternoon monster movie marathons and the 3d craze at the time.
I saw this tour. Hampton Coliseum, Va. don’t remember any 3D glasses and was confused when renting this on Betamax at the local 80s vid store. But do remember Count Floyd
Although many consider the exceptional "Moving Pictures" to be a "transitional" album (from the prog to the more "synth/electronic" style that permeated the band in the 1980s) I think that then at least it is the "beginning" of that transition , which continued on the next album, "Signals". Note that on this album we have all the elements of prog plus several elements of the electronic phase. In addition to the great "Subdivisions", I also highlight "The Weapon". And this album is also impactful because of one thing: it is the last album in which Neil Peart used a totally, let's say, "analog" drum kit, since in the following album, "Grace Under Pressure", he already changed it for one with elements of electronic percussion together (as already appears in this live performance).
I just missed this tour. My first taste was Pittsburgh Civic Arena in 85 for Power Windows. My parents wouldn't let me go till I was 18 dammit. Just a fun fact: Count Floyd (Joe Flaherty) played one of the 2 guards in the Czechoslovakian guard shack in the classic movie "Stripes".
So no one has mentioned count floyd (SCTV), he is always trying to sell his 3D glasses on " Monster Chiller Horror Theatre " ( gotta watch 3D house of stewardess's, a classic! ). So just a gag, a joke and a Canadian thing for us!
I saw this tour in Cleveland. The glasses were really just like if you put 3D glasses on any other time. Kind of blurry. I just moved them down like bifocals so they knew I had them on still😂😂 Like they could see me!! Anyway great show. This was my first one. 23 Altogether which is still a small amount compared to some of my other RUSH geeks. Even got to meet them on the PRESTO tour. Great moment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This was the first Rush show I attended. Have to say I was there for the music. I was off to the side so the glasses had less of an effect. As I recall didn’t leave them on long.
Funny thing. I remember thinking Geddy's voice was on its way out on this tour. haha. He sounded pretty bad when I saw him in 1984. But I think he was just sick or something. He sounded better in R40 than at my first Rush concert Grace Under Pressure tour. I remember then seeing them at the Counterparts Tour, and Geddy's voice was flawless!
*Raises hand* The 3D glasses weren't really a thing at the Cow Palace show I saw. It was just a gag connected to the Count Floyd clip. They probably made a bigger deal about it for this video shoot than it really was.
Ah the 80s... :( Witnessed the Signals tour "Hollywood Sportatorium" , Hollywood, Florida 83', place no longer exists. Saw them live many times, and those were their peak years, imo. They just clicked and they are my favorite band to this day. May, Neil. rest in peace.
I am certain for this dvd release that they replaced some of the vocals, likely from the other nights they recorded in Toronto. I remember clearly on the VHS I had that Geddy mis-sung "And the knowledge that they fear, are a weapon..." That is fixed on this version...and I think some "better" vocal takes are edited in to this DVD version.
I only missed two of their tours from 1980 till the end in 2015. I saw this tour in the spring of 84 at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. I was a jr. In high school at that time. I don't remember much about the 3D glasses other than during the weapon and maybe some of the laser stuff going on. The show was outstanding but for me the best two concerts of that decade was the moving pictures and power windows. Both seen in LA. Thanks for your review!
This was my first tour. Saw them at Cow Palace near San Francisco. My college friend surprised us with tickets. FRONT ROW, right in front of Alex. You think Alex is goofy, but as a teenager, I thought he was fun and entertaining. As far as I recall, I didn't see anyone with 3D glasses. I think I would have remembered that.
Same, but I do recall the 3d glasses. The count appeared to lunge out into the audience. I was second row if I recall correctly, but more towards Geddy. I recall getting joked from friends about being under Geddy's noses shadow...my friends weren't the most clever but it was pretty funny. 😁
Justin, I had seen 3 out of 5 shows at Radio City from this tour (Sept. 83)...They didn't pass out any 3-D glasses that I remember. I think they just did it in Canada...Just a goof, NO 3-D effects!
I was at capital heights outside DC. All I remember is seeing the vampire come and go in 3D. Also, I vividly remember the opening Spirit of Radio. There were curtains up, they dropped and began playing. For me, the best opening song of all time. I think the only other tour they opened with it was Time Machine.

I'm sure someone has mentioned it before but Neil's stick flipping in this song is more time keeping than showmanship. That right hand wants to keep moving during those odd rests. Drumming ghost notes as it were.
You have to be a fan of SCTV to get Count Floyd. He is a character from that show done by Joe Flarity. It was a take on the old timey horror tv nights. Much like the Elvira show. Back when 3D movies were all the rage. He would introduce classic movies like, Dr Tongue's 3D night of pancakes. Dr tongue played by the legendary John Candy . lol I've been a fan since the early eighties but only saw them in concert once. The Presto tour in Montreal Canada
I was at the GUP concert in Atlanta Ga standing about 25 feet from the front of stage. I was a friend of some Ga Tech rugby players that were picked to be stage security. They mingled with the Rush stage crew and were told by the crew members that the GUP shows were MUCH better than the Signals shows. I got backstage, but the band members were already on the buses, in a hurry to get to their next destination. I do not remember any 3D glasses. I was suprised by how on pitch Geddy's voice was. The instrumental perfomance was dead on too.

In 1984; at the Cow Palace; in Feb I saw Prince's Purple Rain Tour, in May I saw Van Halen's Jump Tour and Rush's GUP Tour. Epic few months.

As I said yesterday, I was at one of the two shows in Toronto that were recorded. I didn't see anything 3D and probably took the glasses off after about 30 seconds. "Count Floyd" was a character on the television show SCTV. It was immensely popular at the time. Count Floyd hosted "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre" at the fictitious SCTV network, which played B-list horror films. He was always trying to hawk 3D glasses to the television audience. I think it was all just a gag.
I loved the use of the flat four that they used predominantly around this era. Everything about this song is utterly sublime, and experimental.
I saw them three times in one week, NY. Did not wear glasses had binoculars. Stage left. What a show! Wish you were there. Teach

A rare use of a click track for Neil with the arpeggiator. I believe Red Sector A was the other. I saw this tour at MSG. My first of 37 shows throughout their career.
Rush is awesome. Being a fan since 2112 and seeing them five times, their concerts are incredible. Count Floyd from SCTV played by Joe Flaherty was the person on the back screen. Other appearances are made by the Trailer Park Boys, Jerry Stiller.(they never play Passage to Bangkok... LOL) South Park and others. The back screen is almost the 4th member of the band. You have to pay attention to it because you will miss something important. Check out the best back screen moments of Rush. I don't know if there's any one video but please try and check it out.🍻🇨🇦
I saw this tour when they came to NY. Was fantastic! I remember the Count Floyd bit. I don't remember being given 3d glasses though. 😂
I was at the concert.I was in 8th grade Went with a friend of mine. I didn't have 3D glasses. I saw them September 17 NYC at Madison Square Garden. A band called Fastway opened up for them. The Dracula guy is from SCTV comedy TV show- Count Floyd character
My first Rush concert was the Power Windows tour and it was great although I wasn’t a huge fan of that album, but the concert was a powerful experience for a young player trying to emulate Neil. RIP
I saw them on this tour - first time I ever saw Rush - July 6, 1984, at Richfield Coliseum (between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio). AMAZING concert... flawless. Gary Moore opened up for them (another excellent performance). Rush is ALWAYS on point, every time I have seen them.
They have been releasing 40th anniversary editions of different albums with live stuff to accompany them. I am holding out hope they will continue with Grace under pressure and include the songs that weren't on the original release. Count Floyd played by Joe Flaherty he used the character to host horror movies on TV. They only issued those 3d glasses for the concert they recorded if I'm not mistaken.
I wish they could release a version of this with more of the GUP songs. It's also a shame that there are no official recordings of the Signals tour. That setlist was a BANGER!

I don’t remember the 3-D glasses though,🤷🏼♂️ Also I was at the NO show when they taped “Turn the Page” for the Show of Hands album. Enjoy your content,keep up the great work!
I still have those glasses from this exact show. To be honest, I don't recall the glasses doing anything. I thought maybe it was for the rear projection just for the Count Floyd bit. But that was part of the spoof. Count Floyd was form SCTV and the 3D thing was part of the gag on the TV show. Plus the shot of the audience wearing the glasses...I think that was the money shot for the video...in my opinion.

Permanent waves to power windows was my fav period as well. The 3-d glasses were a joke from SCTV with Count Floyd's 3-D stick.
That guy in the video was Count Floyd off of SCTV, a Canadian comedy show that spawned John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis and this guy Joe Flaherty among others. This is part of a skit where they do a parody of the old Vincent Price Saturday afternoon monster movie marathons and the 3d craze at the time.
There is incredible energy in this concert. On fire, as you say! I wish I could have seen them live in that era.

I saw this tour. Hampton Coliseum, Va. don’t remember any 3D glasses and was confused when renting this on Betamax at the local 80s vid store. But do remember Count Floyd
If it was the Grace Under pressure tour, I don't remember the glasses in Los Angeles, and I'm pretty sure if the were given out, I'd still have them.
Although many consider the exceptional "Moving Pictures" to be a "transitional" album (from the prog to the more "synth/electronic" style that permeated the band in the 1980s) I think that then at least it is the "beginning" of that transition , which continued on the next album, "Signals". Note that on this album we have all the elements of prog plus several elements of the electronic phase. In addition to the great "Subdivisions", I also highlight "The Weapon". And this album is also impactful because of one thing: it is the last album in which Neil Peart used a totally, let's say, "analog" drum kit, since in the following album, "Grace Under Pressure", he already changed it for one with elements of electronic percussion together (as already appears in this live performance).

I just missed this tour. My first taste was Pittsburgh Civic Arena in 85 for Power Windows. My parents wouldn't let me go till I was 18 dammit. Just a fun fact: Count Floyd (Joe Flaherty) played one of the 2 guards in the Czechoslovakian guard shack in the classic movie "Stripes".
So no one has mentioned count floyd (SCTV), he is always trying to sell his 3D glasses on " Monster Chiller Horror Theatre " ( gotta watch 3D house of stewardess's, a classic! ).
So just a gag, a joke and a Canadian thing for us!

I saw this tour in Cleveland. The glasses were really just like if you put 3D glasses on any other time. Kind of blurry. I just moved them down like bifocals so they knew I had them on still😂😂 Like they could see me!! Anyway great show. This was my first one. 23 Altogether which is still a small amount compared to some of my other RUSH geeks. Even got to meet them on the PRESTO tour. Great moment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I do not always agree but that is why they are your thoughts. I respect your thoughts .

I saw this tour 3 times … as far I remember the 3d was just a gimmick , if there was actually something to see I missed it. The shows were amazing! ( in 2d)
This was the first Rush show I attended. Have to say I was there for the music. I was off to the side so the glasses had less of an effect. As I recall didn’t leave them on long.

Funny thing. I remember thinking Geddy's voice was on its way out on this tour. haha. He sounded pretty bad when I saw him in 1984. But I think he was just sick or something. He sounded better in R40 than at my first Rush concert Grace Under Pressure tour. I remember then seeing them at the Counterparts Tour, and Geddy's voice was flawless!

*Raises hand* The 3D glasses weren't really a thing at the Cow Palace show I saw. It was just a gag connected to the Count Floyd clip. They probably made a bigger deal about it for this video shoot than it really was.

Witnessed the Signals tour "Hollywood Sportatorium" , Hollywood, Florida 83', place no longer exists. Saw them live many times, and those were their peak years, imo. They just clicked and they are my favorite band to this day. May, Neil. rest in peace.
I am certain for this dvd release that they replaced some of the vocals, likely from the other nights they recorded in Toronto. I remember clearly on the VHS I had that Geddy mis-sung "And the knowledge that they fear, are a weapon..." That is fixed on this version...and I think some "better" vocal takes are edited in to this DVD version.
This whole gup live album is stunning.
I saw them on this tour on Nashville. I don't remember any 3D glasses. What I do remember is that my roommate nearly got his camera confiscated.

I only missed two of their tours from 1980 till the end in 2015. I saw this tour in the spring of 84 at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. I was a jr. In high school at that time. I don't remember much about the 3D glasses other than during the weapon and maybe some of the laser stuff going on. The show was outstanding but for me the best two concerts of that decade was the moving pictures and power windows. Both seen in LA. Thanks for your review!
This was my first tour. Saw them at Cow Palace near San Francisco. My college friend surprised us with tickets. FRONT ROW, right in front of Alex. You think Alex is goofy, but as a teenager, I thought he was fun and entertaining. As far as I recall, I didn't see anyone with 3D glasses. I think I would have remembered that.
Same, but I do recall the 3d glasses. The count appeared to lunge out into the audience. I was second row if I recall correctly, but more towards Geddy. I recall getting joked from friends about being under Geddy's noses shadow...my friends weren't the most clever but it was pretty funny. 😁
Justin, I had seen 3 out of 5 shows at Radio City from this tour (Sept. 83)...They didn't pass out any 3-D glasses that I remember. I think they just did it in Canada...Just a goof, NO 3-D effects!

I was at capital heights outside DC. All I remember is seeing the vampire come and go in 3D.
Also, I vividly remember the opening Spirit of Radio. There were curtains up, they dropped and began playing. For me, the best opening song of all time. I think the only other tour they opened with it was Time Machine.
Yes, I was at this specific concert. As far as I can recall (which isn't much, admittedly), the 3D glasses did absolutely nothing. I'll ask two of the guys who attended with me what they remember.

I saw them every year from 79' to 87' and if I recall correctly twice one of the years. I don't remember anything about the 3D glasses to be honest. Great times...
I'm sure someone has mentioned it before but Neil's stick flipping in this song is more time keeping than showmanship.

tuners at the bottom of the bass... so on the other side of the strings than normal.
You have to be a fan of SCTV to get Count Floyd. He is a character from that show done by Joe Flarity. It was a take on the old timey horror tv nights. Much like the Elvira show. Back when 3D movies were all the rage. He would introduce classic movies like, Dr Tongue's 3D night of pancakes. Dr tongue played by the legendary John Candy . lol I've been a fan since the early eighties but only saw them in concert once. The Presto tour in Montreal Canada

I was at the GUP concert in Atlanta Ga standing about 25 feet from the front of stage. I was a friend of some Ga Tech rugby players that were picked to be stage security. They mingled with the Rush stage crew and were told by the crew members that the GUP shows were MUCH better than the Signals shows. I got backstage, but the band members were already on the buses, in a hurry to get to their next destination. I do not remember any 3D glasses. I was suprised by how on pitch Geddy's voice was. The instrumental perfomance was dead on too.
