this song is always one of the best examples of how their live performances deliver so much more power to their songs

Super agree. I found I almost only listen to the live albums because of this. I remember seeing this live during this tour and it blew me away how it sounded and it's been one of my favorites ever since.

Alex sounding like David Gilmore with a powerful all encompassing guitar presence. This sounds loud and amazing in my HT....major guitar ear candy.

There are 5 Rush songs that give me chills or bring me to tears, even after hundreds of listens. And Between the Wheels does both. (tears and chills) One of my permanent favorites.

They slowed this song down from the studio version to make it heavier, and that gave the outro more room to breathe as they took it to new places. Awesome.

This is still one of my favorite Rush songs, especially live. Notice how Alex' chording and soloing utilizes sus2/sus4's and avoids 3rd's to give it that "sound". Heavy, man...

This was the first time playing this live in 20 years. The previous time was on the GUP tour in 1984. And it sounds even better in 2004 than 1984. They also played it again in 2007/2008.

One of my most favorite songs. I missed it in ‘84 but I did get to hear it in both the Sn&A tour and the R40 tour.
BTW is just a badass tune!!
“You know how that rabbit feels
      Going under your speeding wheels
      Bright image flashing by
      Like windshield towards a fly
      Frozen in a fatal climb
      But the wheels of time
      Just pass you by……”

Note that even though Geddy's voice went a little funky in his later years, he was hitting clearly some notes he'd had to kind of screech out on the albums. Because he learned to sing properly instead of abusing his vocal cords.

Saw this show in Milwaukee Wisconsin at the Marcus Amphitheater with by brother and two others. We sat 1st row directly in front on Geddy. Spectacularly Amazing it was. Awfully expensive at the same time 🤦🏼‍♂️ but we’ll worth it. Did the same thing for clockwork Angels tour only that time we were in front of Alex. Great experiences.

Yes they did have to relearn the songs. Neil mentions this in one of his interviews.

  • @sethcashman1011

One of the biggest highlights of the set, for sure. I saw them do it once live back in 1983. Funny that you mentioned the hits on the keyboard at the end. Always one of my favorite parts of the studio version. Added tension, which was appropriate to the piece. Geddy really goes nuts wirh the chord here. The lyrics have always been some of my favorites. Neil explained what he was trying to convey in an interview conducted back in late '83:
"You have to say that time, as a moving, circular thing, sometimes runs people down and ruins people's lives. One of the new songs we've done, Between the Wheels, says, 'Wheels can take you around/Wheels can cut you down.' There are those two things. A lot of people *aren't* run down by time, and they aren't pushed by time. They're just in the middle. Everything rolls right by them."

@@Cash2112 the interview happened in late ‘83, which was right around the time I saw them play Between The Wheels - also in late ‘83 (I want to say September, but it was kind of a long time ago; it was the P/G warmup tour. A few great prerelease performances that night.). The album was released in ‘84.

I remember an interview on Geddy commenting about the screen with the lyrics on stage. He said something to the effect of at the time they were playing 3 1/2 hour shows and with the amount of songs they played, it was easier to forget the lyrics in their older age and fans would definitely notice if they jumbled the words. So it was just an easy way to keep track of the songs as the concert would progress.

    • @lisaharrison1031
      @lisaharrison1031 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw that interview.
It’s not easy playing almost 3 1/2 hour shows.
My husband and I went to 11 shows on the last tour in 2015. They played appropriately 30-31 songs at each show.
      That’s a lot of songs.
It’s not easy being GED because he’s like the master multitasker on stage.
He’s wearing so many hats while he’s performing. Lead vocals, bass ( sometimes with his hands & sometimes with his feet) while playing keyboards.
Let’s not forget that the lyrics he has to remember are pretty complicated too. I would never begrudge him using a monitor. I have seen a lot of RUSH shows through the decades and I have never left a venue unhappy or disappointed.

I remember hearing that before the tour, the guys listened to their entire catalog of songs in order to decide which tunes to play on the 30th anniversary tour. I saw them in Milwaukee in 2004 and brought my younger brother (RIP Tom...🙏). "Between the Wheels" is one of my personal favorites because of Neil's prophetic lyrics. I just hope and pray that the US will not go to war with China over the South China Sea or with Russia over the Ukraine. "Brother can you spare another war; another wasteland and another lost generation...."
Peace and love from a US Navy veteran.... ✌😍✌

For a bunch of us, (likely including Geddy), style never really occurs to us primarily because we don't really care about fashion.
Geddy looks like he's at the pub and jumped on stage to jam with the house band!!
If nothing else, he looks comfortable!

If I remember correctly they did two concerts here in Germany, one in Oberhausen (I was there!) and one in Frankfurt (I guess this clip is from there). And yes, this is the R30 (later the lights on the "UFO's" were in red and blue. It was a fantastic concert. Got two tickets for me and my nephew as a present for his 18th birthday (also bought him a Rush shirt there) and he is still a Rush fan.

They altered the arrangement a bit. I mentioned how when they do a song live, it gets better(evolves) tour over tour because that’s the way they see it improving, but NEVER straying away from the core arrangement and sound. I LOVE StickHits audio treatments he does but I’m not sure what was wrong with the r30 that needed tweaking like only he can do. Sounded great, and r30 was the EXACT OPPOSITE of Rush in Rio in that everything was upgraded and improved as far as well everything. As much as I watched that Rio dvd, the Blu-ray of this OMG AND it focuses more attention to what they’re doing to produce the sound you hear coming at you constantly. Both on each individual member and respective instruments but also A LOT of pedal pushing, Alex and Geddy and the sample triggering of the maestro professor Neil. Set list was quite impressive to, perfectly balanced between new, somewhat new, old, staples and surprising deep cuts either never played live before or in more than 20+years just F’n phenomenal performance🤘🖖✌️🎸🎤🥁🎹👍👌🥇🎼🇨🇦

Funny seen them do this song twice one at grace under pressure tour then at r40 in Toronto both times it was amazing probably cause they played there best shows in there home town the last show was crazy they asked everyone to where concert t shirts what amazed me was the international people that came to see the band floored me only would experienced that by the bar crawl we did on the way up to the show.

That J bass is awesome btw, beautiful, I remember them playing this live and was a bit blown away, never thought they would bring this number back, it's dark and somber for Rush, one of their heavier songs; and Geddy has that pedal board playing the Moog Taurus II synth, all those ultra-deep bass tones that are so low they are hard to hear, live it was a wave of sub-bass that would hit you in the chest more than the eardrums

Since you just finished Hold Your Fire, it might be interesting to look at Force Ten from both the R30 tour and the Clockwork Angels tour, as both of those versions are a slightly heavier take on the song (the Clockwork Angels version in particular) relative to the album version or the Show of Hands performance.

Lol I've read that the washing machines on stage were a response to particularly savage comments by some music industry critic's review of Rush during that period, saying the band was "washed-up". They laughed it off and publicly made a private in-joke out of it that only the 3 of them understood: they did their washing-up right on stage for everyone to see and incorporated it into their live shows from then onward. I understand the music critic was not amused, but they were amusing themselves and loved their private/public gag!

Just wondering when we’re going to do a status video of where you are with Rush as a band. I mean it’s clear you’ve grown to like a lot of their music. You’ve been through so much of the catalog, currently watching the Rush in Rio shows, but wondering where you are as a music fan and as a musician yourself?
What are your thoughts of this trio from the seventies who produced music for more then four decades?

Sorry I got one more animal story to tell you. Back in the day I had two roommates that we shared a rental house straight after college. My friend Daniel had a female Boxer dog 🐶 named Chelsea. Paul had a grey and white female kitten 🐱 named Bucket and I had my female orange and white tabby named Chaucer. Anyway one day we were listening to 2112 and the dog was sitting on one side of the couch facing the three of us and the kittens on the other. I started laughing because I told Daniel and Paul wouldn’t it be funny in the section that goes Dah Dah Dah Dah Dah Boom…Dah Dah Dah Dah Dah Boom… if the kittens went: MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW…and Chelsea went WOOF! So it would be MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW WOOF! MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW WOOF! MEOW MEOW MEOW WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF!!! WE ALL LAUGHED FOR DAYS!!! 😝😝😝😜😜😜🤪🤪🤪😎😎😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

He finished 3rd in the mr Olympia for the over 50 category but was later stripped of the title due to testing positive for weed and non sugar based substitutes which he used for rehydration.
And that is all not true. He just ate a lot before this tour. 😂

Love, love this song and version, but there's always been something that really irritates me, in this particular version... Alex uses a guitar with no tremolo and this song REQUIRES a tremolo, like Limelight or Red Sector A.
I always thought that was a weird decision and why I've always preferred the Snakes and Arrows Tour version, because he has a tremolo. Still excellent though, as always.
