      Gotta love him. I've always wondered how many people, even when Rush was touring with that, knew who the heck Count Floyd was. I grew up in Buffalo, we got to see SCTV, and that was probably true for a lot of people in the northern states, but I bet nobody in Texas or California knew where that guy came from.

    I was at that show in the 10th row. I still have the 3D glasses. Count Floyd was a character created by Eugene Levy for the original Second City tv show done in Canada. Since this concert was in Toronto we all thought the bit was hilarious. I might have been a bit high too. God, that was an epic show and I miss this band so very much.

    • @TommyLMason
      @TommyLMason 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to correct you but Count Floyd was played by Joe Flaherty (RIP), not Eugene Levy. Not sure if Levy CREATED Count Floyd, but that’s Joe Flaherty in the video. Oooooooooo, scary!

    One of Neil’s greatest musical and lyrical accomplishments. They must not have loved the song as it was retired after 1986 and never brought back. But I think it’s a lost classic that deserved a rebirth.

    It’s so easy to forget only three guys are making all that sound. Neil’s part is just incredible- one of his best blends of acoustic and electronic drums in a composition. And man, the way that solo from Alex just builds and builds - the look on your face at the end said it all! You’ve done two parts of the Fear Trilogy now. Witch Hunt was the first, so you should check out The Enemy Within next. The songs were all from different albums. Neal was writing about different aspects of fear most of us encounter in one form or another. Cheers!

      I’m lucky. Despite knowing of rush from the early 80s via distant early warning from the hear’n’aid record, in Australia I was isolated from the whole rush thing. I was into 70s and 80s metal, so I took one look at Alex life son’s ‘new wave’ hair cut and said no thanks. Fast forward to 2020, got moving pictures and never stopped listening to them. As a new listener I have no real baggage, so I love all the eras. I love the necromancer and time stand still. I’ll listen to Cygnus one day, mystic rhythms the next. The only album I find hard work is snakes and arrows.

    • @HollowGolem
      @HollowGolem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jaym3064 it's actually pretty common for '80s Rush. After Terry Brown left, the production on their studio albums took a nosedive, and most of their songs sounded way better live. "Mystic Rhythms," "The Pass," hell pick just about any song from their 80s period that has a live version, and it is almost certainly an improvement over the studio. They were still writing good music, but between inferior engineers and the kind of production that was in vogue in the '80s, it just never came together quite right.

    Just a quick note to add that there is a 4tb part to 'Fear'.
    It's called "Freeze (Part IV of Fear)" and it appears on the album Vapor Trails, released in 2002. That's 18 years after the "Grace Under Pressure" record came out containing the song "The Enemy Within (Part I of Fear)".
    It's a fascinating exploration of how fear has been a factor in human behaviour.

    This song is part 2 of the multi- part, and multi-album, work "Fear".
    The first three parts were released in reverse order across three consecutive albums.
    It was introduced on the Moving Pictures album with the song "Witch Hunt (Part III of "Fear")".
    As I mentioned above, "The Weapon" is part II.
    Part I is called "The Enemy Within" and it appears on the album Grace Under Pressure.
    Its a fascinating exploration of how fear affects the the human psyche.

    Here's what Neil had to say about it. I am pretty sure this came from the tour book:
    With a Roland drum machine and assorted synthesizers, Geddy and friend Oscar secret themselves in Ged's music room to create some music of a highly confidential and experimental nature. Among the Top Secret projects which they produce is the basic foundation for this song, including a highly mysterious and bizarre drum pattern which Oscar coaxes out of the drum machine. (I'm supposed to learn how to play that?)
    Well, I do love a challenge, and once we start to tackle this at one of the rehearsals, I discover that if I play totally backwards, and bend my hands a few ways they don't normally go, I can do it. The shame of being reduced to learning from a machine! However, I must admit, I would never have come up with something like that on my own!
    With all this and more to accomplish with my hands, it is no compromise to let my bass drum foot play a steady "four", which is also something I never thought I could do. This also brings the feel of the song perilously close to a (shudder) d-d-d-dance song, like, you know, disco! Treason! Treason! Kill the traitors! They wrote a song you can dance to! Will you ever forgive us? (No.)
    It was fun to do, though. It's so contrary to the mood suggested by the lyrics, and such a different approach for us, that it is a very satisfying piece of work. It's an all-out production number that we can play live, so I'm sure all the "disco kids" will soon be coming to our concerts. Ha!

    Nice one bud..haven't seen this in a long time..this might've been the last tour where Neil used a double bass drum, but Im not sure. Someone else can confirm/deny this..The Weapon , part of a four-part trilogy!

    I seen them 12 times, should have been more. They sound just as good live as the sound on the record. A lot of times better when they add a little more to the song live. The Signals album is one of my favorites.

    It was way before your time, but for some context - Count Floyd was a fictional children's television show host on the sketch comedy show SCTV. It was big back in 1984. If you enjoyed Alex's space ladder you should check out Jacob's Ladder from their 1980 Permanent Waves album. The studio and live versions are very similar so you can't go wrong with any of them. *edit* - Oh, you already did. Like, six months ago...

    I believe that Rush was in their prime from 84-88 in terms of live performances. So much energy and enthusiasm in their shows from that period. I much prefer their version of Spirit of Radio from P/G Live to the studio version. Vital Signs from the same show goes right into a couple of a couple early tunes really well. Man, everything from that concert is worth a reaction, or at least a listen on your end. Ridiculously good. It’s all available in remastered high def on TH-cam too
