- Electricity prices in the Philippines are some of the most expensive in Asia.
The country's only nuclear plant in Baatan might offer a solution to the looming energy shortage.
But safety concerns and corruption allegations still plague the plant’s rehabilitation plan that could cost up to a billion dollars.
Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Bataan, Philippines.

Don’t be negative that’s the best thing we could have in the Philippines to get a cheaper electricity. Now, we would be able to afford our to put on an air conditioner indoors without worrying the cost. Thank God if they can operate as soon as possible.
It will lessen the expenses because nuclear energy is more cheaper than coal fired power plant
And more green
Even if I want to build a Korean car assembly plant in the Philippines, the power of the power plant is very insufficient. And we need huge water-storage dams, huge car-exporting docks. Lastly, more than half of the Filipino men must receive industrial education.
Agree!! Our engineers are not ready yet and it will take many years of training to operate a Nuclear Power Plants!!
If our energy department can honestly answer one question when asked:
DO WE HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO HANDLE NUCLEAR WASTE
DISPOSAL AND MOST IMPORTANT, STORAGE OF “SPENT FUEL”? The existing spent fuel pool built within the plant is not big enough to hold spent fuel for the expected 40 years life of the plant!!

Nuclear power offers a game-changing solution for clean, abundant energy, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. Let's embrace this technology to tackle climate change head-on and ensure a prosperous tomorrow for generations to come! 💡🌍
God blesss Philippines Nuclear power plan🇵🇭
The Cory Aquino's administration just wasted the Bataan Power Plant. Such a shame.
It did not waste lives.
it does they bomb peopel@@stories_stories_stories
"" CORY AND CHINA DO NOT LIKE THE PHILIPPINES TO GET PROSPER BECAUSE OF THEIR EVIL AND GREEDY INTENTION "!!
@stories_stories_stories
Nor does its functional sister nuclear power plants in both Brazil and South Korea.
"" THE OPENNING OF THIS POWER PLANT IS LOOOOOONG OVERDUE " TOO MUCH BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BUT LACK OF CONCRETE ACTION "!!
While nuclear energy can bring benefits, and tbh I would also like that, they should also ensure that it won't harm anything and anyone. This should benefit the interests of Filipinos.
That is true electricity in Philippines is expensive
I dont care if people suffer in there atleast low price electricity is a must
Nuclear power plants reduce carbon footprints primarily by producing electricity without emitting greenhouse gases during the generation process. Unlike fossil fuel power plants, which burn coal, natural gas, or oil, nuclear power plants rely on nuclear fission to generate heat, which then drives turbines to produce electricity. This process does not produce carbon dioxide (CO2) or other greenhouse gases as byproducts.
Additionally, nuclear power can provide baseload electricity, meaning it can generate a constant and reliable power supply regardless of weather conditions or time of day. This reliability makes nuclear power an essential component of low-carbon energy systems, helping to stabilize the grid and support the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind
Are there other safer options?
No
Wind energy is much safer.
nuclear much clean and safer, only negative stereotypes keeps filipino from.economic progress so sad.
@stories_stories_stories wind turbines have been produced by coal power plants in China, having cut many environmental procedures and protocols to make it the cheapest in the market.
You only wanted to see the perception of green energy. Not the actual thing that will grant us green energy in practice. Real life.
What would be the impact on your life if ...
First, how much money would you save every month if your electric bill dropped by 90%?
Second, how likely is it you would buy an electric car if the energy to charge it were that low?
Third, how would you spend that extra cash every month? 4th. Would this satisfy you as
being your contribution to solving climate warming?
Please answer this here so we can get an idea of what impact low energy costs would have on the average Filipino family?

😁😁😁 Thank you!!
That old nuclear plant looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
With the trademark of Philippine politics as woke, it's bound to happen.
Better to build new nuclear power plants.
South Korea, Brazil, and the US have similar models of those nuclear plants, there's no difference if we choose to run it as well. There are also plans of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors.
@@beataplaya It won't, why give that immediate conclusion, just to pull the country down from further national progress?
disaster? it's american design..

‘🦋 Knowing One Another’ is the piece I chose to open the ‘Beyond the Stars’ concert at the Expo 2020 Dubai. Composed and arranged for the musicians I had assembled for the performance, the music evokes the anticipation of travellers setting out on a journey full of the promise of discovery. From Tayyar Bayramov’s mesmerising mugham solo to the compelling rhythms and melodies performed brilliantly on traditional instruments, my aim was to paint a sound portrait of the ways we come to know one another through our music. Deep thanks to all the musicians who shared their stories and skill, and who set out on this journey with me. -Sami Yusuf
Marcos Jr. Good work
Aquinos Clan Bad work....
Some people who hated pres. fem went running to USA which runs about 94 nuclear reactors
May be not yet!! May be BNPP COMPLETION is not the answer to our energy crisis!! May be BNPP is not the answer to a cheaper electricity as expected!! May be more tax money will be spend to its completion and operation!!
Sorry the truth!! Sana hindi mamislead ulit and taong bayan for promises that is too good to be true!! Just saying!!
Promises that too good to be true? Hello? South Korea and Japan and many other countries are living better because of their nuclear power plant, nako napaka talangka mo
Dude he's sweating balls. 😂
That's why we need to turn on the Nuclear plant so they could afford the bill using the AC
another fukushima??!! Thermal energy, in-pipe mini hydro turbine are among the best alternative
hundreds of nuclear power plant worldwide only 2 major disasters Fukishima and Chernobyl with very very few deaths less than 100 deaths Chernobyl and fukishima nuclear power Engineering Designs are outdated .
Of the options you gave, only thermal can be used for base load. Even then, it can't be built everywhere.
@@buenaflorfamilyI definitely agree on starting up the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant but only after modernizing its equipment. Both Fukushima and Chernobyl were caused by human error and cutting corners after all
You need batteries for those and the energy produced is insufficient. The only powerful clean energy is nuclear energy. The application of the highest standards is a must to prevent disasters waiting to happen.
Very possible another Fukushima!! It was discontinued due to its physical location and due to corruption during construction at that time! The location is near an earthquake zone and along the seashore!! Just to retrofit the plant will cost a tremendous amount of money from the pockets of the tax payer!!
Again, how we can handle the issue of STORAGE of SPENT FUEL and NUCLEAR WASTE? Any nuclear expert from our country can answer that question?????
