Black Nazarene procession returns to Philippines for first time after pandemic pause

- One of the biggest events in the Roman Catholic calendar is back after a three-year hiatus, due to the pandemic.
The procession of the Black Nazarene, an image of Jesus Christ believed by some followers to possess healing powers, draws millions of devotees every year.
The statue was enclosed in glass for the first time, but it did not deter believers from trying to get as close to it as possible.

Those images represent only our commemoration of Jesus. God will judge you based on your intentions, what's in your heart and how you live life according to his teachings. And if you are Godly enough, you should not mock other people's faith. The Spaniards came to colonize us and they brought us religion. Shouldn't we be thankful of that rather than paganism? Worshipping idols instead of God, Jesus our Saviour. In Catholic ways, these images are representations of God.

I was there yesterday, January 9,2024, and some years ago of His Grand Feast.. you will never understand the deep & great devotion of this people unless you experience it there..
Especially when you attend Mass in Quiapo church, and pray inside, you just let your heart pray and you will really cry coz of His presence..

Just out of genuine curiosity and may seem sarcastic but, is prayers done normally inside the church, at home, or while having a normal Sunday mass in Church less effective than this “Translasyon”? Why all the ruckus and not make the parade organized and civil?
Because I don’t get that that statue, even as an antique from 1600s, is different from any other Jesus statues. And even then statues, for catholicism, are supposedly just symbols and not subject for worship and the prayers should be directed to actual Jesus Christ Himself who is in heaven.
For the my fellow Catholics who feel sad and angry for how others judge and say things to us. Please remember Jesus was crucified, many of his disciples and saints were executed all because of people who judged and say things against them. Let us all be humble and be like our Lord and his followers. Let them say what they want and persecute us but still we should forgive and pray for them for that is how we trully follow our Lord's footsteps.

This is not idolatry, it can be, and those who worship the image are in the wrong, and not following Catholic teaching. Statues are not bad, they are reminders of our faith, and beautiful ways to evangelize through art. Some images can be miraculous like the bronze serpent that God ordered to be made, it only became wrong once it was worshipped. Remember God commanded images to be made,He only prohibits them to be worshipped as gods. Catholics understand this, all good practinf Catholics DO NOT worship statues or images!!!

To those people saying negative statements about this procession. Who are you to question their faith? Its still Jesus that they worship. The statue is not a form of idolatry for the significance lies in what it represents. It is only in the image of Christ and is a reminder of Him. He knows those who seek Him and will go through a crowd with hundreds of people fighting against the heat and suffocation to get his attention. The Traslacion only serves as a form of sacrifice to get their prayers answered.

As a Catholic and Filipino. I can say, Those Devotees were there every year of His Grand Feast coz of their gratefulness and thankful to JESUS Nazareno for their Answered prayers, and many miracles they experienced and unexpected convertions and blessings they received. They believed JESUS as black Nazareno saved them.
How is praying and being devoted specifically to Jesus Nazarene, the statue, any different from doing the same with other Christ’s statues & images?
And even then, as catholic priests say in response to those who criticize catholics as idolaters, that statues and images are merely symbols for God, Jesus, etc… and to pray to Them who are actually in heaven.
But the actions of the devotees says otherwise, they treat the statues, Jesus Nazarene and others in other places, as if that was the actual Jesus in person.

Just like the Temple of King Solomon, Catholic churches have sacred images and statues, not just curtain all over like you do. It was God who instructed King Solomon and Moses to make statues for the Temple and Ark of Covenant.

I'm a Catholic just happened to be from Philippines, but I never ever thought in my life that we're worshipping the images. We never see them as plain man- made material things but rather, it aides us where to refer to and revere to. I think no Catholic has the way of thinking that they see the images or carvings as idols to worship to or only depend on it as the very core of our belief. You can burn all the images and our symbols worldwide but can the Catholic Church will end by doing that? How about no?

who are you to judge what's in their hearts? only God can search for one's intention and devotion.
I am a Christian and im not into any idols, i was praying for them for their "wrong way" of veneration but the Holy Spirit told and asked me... "what comes out of their mouths?" I answered, "JESUS the Nazarene" then I realized whats in their hearts and faiths is always JESUS after all... then I tried to reason... but their works and their ways are...! "STOP! Just focus on JESUS! or you may end up judging others just because of what you merely know".
Don't know how you came to that conclusion, but they believe Jesus Himself will grant them His blessing if they're symbolic'lly close to him (which is what getting closer to the statue means), you know, probably trying to imitate the woman who pushed through a croud just to touch the hem of Jesus' cloak.
I won't deny there are people who actually do commit this sin here (and probably other places too), but believe me, if they don't do it knowing it's a sin. As the other commenter said, JESUS is what's in their hearts, not a block of wood what might have looked like Him.

If God doesn't like the way we celebrate the feast of Black Nazarene and other feasts do you think He will give power to the priests to cast away evil spirits, heal the sick, etc? And why are your pastors cannot do what our priests can do like casting away evil spirits, etc? Who between us then pleases God? The blind see, the lame walks, the sick is cured, those are our proof of God's approval of what we're doing. Show proof. 😂

If we are wrong in doing this celebration and others as well like sinulog in Cebu, dinagyang in Iloilo, feast of Pinafrancia in Naga, etc., why our priests can cast away evil spirits, heal the sick, let the blind see, etc. Will God give power to.our priests if He is not pleased with what we Catholics are doing? And why your pastors cannot do what our priests can do? Did you watch Jessica soho where the possessed shouted in pain when the crucifix with statue of Jesus touched him? It was a successful mission of the priests who were able to drive away the evil spirits. It showed that God is with the Catholic priests giving them power over evil spirits. Where is your video to show that your pastor can drive away evil spirits, heal the sick, give sight to the blind, etc.?
Did you see a priest wiping a towel in statues and wipe it in his body? Did u hear a priest says that wiping a towel in idols,heals your sickness,problems or anything? What I’m saying is worshiping idols is “Wrong” did u hear the statement of the man in his enterview he said “ that he believes the black Nazareth gives him long life and bleesings in his life. “GOD” is above not in statues/idols. the Bible even said in Exodus that we must not worship idols or serve them, do not make idols above the sky,earth and water. Instead we should focus on GOD directy not in the opposite way. Theres nothing wrong about about doing processions or celebrating the sinulog,in different parts of the country.Priest have powers because they connect to GOD directly GOD himself gived them powers to cast out evil..And I think in my opinion we are the only ROMAN CATHOLICS who worship idols.The purpose of the idols/statues is to remind us that GOD is with us always and remind us there past how faithful our saints and martyrs are.that’s why they are called idols because we idolized them because of there faith…I’m a filipino two and I love my country,Catholic church and GOD.

We are all born as sinner but We are all forgiven by the love of GOD on the cross. he is everywhere. i dont hate them for their doing this but they practice the wrong according to the Bible, i think we need to study more the Bible. we can pray everywhere. They do not worship the statue. Their veneration is a symbolic act of their greatfulness and faith in Jesus Christ, the Nazarene. Processions are a long time tradition for all Catholic Churches, not just in Quiapo. It is done to keep the faith in the community where the church resides and to pray to God. There are devotees who are overdoing it, but do not judge them all because you don't know what's in their hearts.
i am not judging to anyone my friend.. but according to the Bible theres no mention to follow this tradition method.. in the news testament paul said, in the ancient time people are bind by the laws but in the new testament its over coz son of God jesus clearify all to follow his command. So when i see this video one man said, when he get touch the statue of Jesus it is his believe it will bring good fortune for the future. they do this like a woman when she touch Jesus's clothe she get cure her sick.. yes she get cure her sick because It was the the body of Jesus Christ (physically).. Jesus told when he is in the world he is the light of the world.. and theres no unclean in his body Because he is God. But this one is like idol worship in my opinion. God is already in your heart.. your body is the temple of God. God already pour his holy spirit in our heart. but we human disobey his command.. according to the bible It is sin if anyone beyond the words of God. like if anyone remake the Bible. but everything is your choice. We are not perfect at all. God is the only one.
