This is why the prequels were so amazing for those of us that had grown up with only the original 3. We knew there was a horrific story behind Anakin/Vadars story. To actually SEE the transition from good to evil; to see the heart break that Padme and Obi-Wan went through; to watch Yoda drop his staff when he felt so many die... I can't tell you what that was like, after so many years of only knowing of the tragedies.
Just the fact that he still called Anikan his 'friend', after everything he's been through. The pain still haunts him, but he is still able to remember Anikan before he turned, and that's the result of the grieving process.

4:44 was actually me the other day when I had to cut off two close friends. Even though I have other friends whom I grew closer to following their betrayal it still hurts...
I know Alec Guinness hated being known for the role of Kenobi, but this scene is so well-done. He elevated Star Wars the way Patrick Stewart later elevated Trek.
Oh my lord, goosebumps and tears are all I had watching this. Perfectly synced to the prequels with the original sound. It's hauntingly dark and beautiful.
This is beautiful. Obi-Wan is my favorite Star Wars character because, while he isn't the main protagonist of any of the movies, he's always there for those who are. He's solid as a rock in the face of opposition. When Anakin turns evil, Obi-Wan stays true to what he knows is right. Even though he has to live in exile and make all kinds of sacrifices, he makes sure that Luke and Leia are okay. In the end, he sacrifces himself to help Luke. Luke gets the credit for blowing up the Death Star and saving the galaxy, but if it weren't for Obi-Wan's sacfrice that never would have happened. I love this video because it brings to life for us the kind of hell that Obi-Wan must have endured. First off, he watched his friend and mentor Qui-Gon get killed. Then he watched his lover die in the Clone Wars. To top it al off, he's in a position of power and prestige on the Jedi Council in ROTS only to have the entire galaxy that he's fought to protect turn against him and believe he's a traitor. His clone friends try to kill him, he sees the footage of his friend and brother Anakin bowing before Darth Sidious, and slaughtering the younglings. Then he's forced to fight Anakin, only to watch him burning up while screaming "I HATE YOU!" How much can one heart take? He must have gone through hell after going into hiding on Tatooine. I'm excited to see the Kenobi series when it comes out, but at the same time I'm terrified; I really hope they do justice to the PTSD that Obi-Wan would have been enduring.
Beautifully said. You reflected my same sentiment in making this video. No other version fully captured what you've just typed, so I decided there had to be a way. Thanks for watching.
This is why a "Kenobi" stand-alone film (or maybe series) could be a success, although it would have to be even deeper than "Revenge" - than any other "Star Wars" film we've ever seen. If the right director (Filoni/Favreau, possibly; possibly Villeneuve) could be persuaded to make it, it could win Academy Awards.
This is an absolutely brilliant cut. Alec Guiness' performance is so perfect. Major sad feels repeatedly with all the weight of the history and the emotion. The footage of Kenobi having to kill his brothers in arms is emotionally brutal. The story of the clones is utterly tragic.
Thrilled you enjoyed. I was never quite satisfied with the edits of this idea I had found previously...so I decided to make my own! Haha. I wanted one that truly felt complete, and captured the whole range of emotions required. Glad you liked it!!!

I love how Alec Guinness act, you can feel all the terrible memories even if the prequels where not filmed yet. I just learned that the full scenario was already written so it was surely easier for Alec Guinness but somehow it feels like obi-wan remember precisely the mustafar fight when luke asks him how anakin died, in his eyes you can feel him replaying the whole scene, it's just incredible. (maybe i'm influenced by the edit but it's a great scene anyway)
Anakin: "How well would you sleep knowing I failed you?" Obi Wan: "Not very well I imagine, luckily that isn't true and never will be." _19 years later he's aged 30 years and is constantly having flashbacks_
The PTSD acting by Sir Alec Guinness was not really an act. He was a combat veteran of WWII, and in that time he had seen the horrors of war. He commanded a Landing Craft Infantry at the Allied invasion of Sicily, and later ferried supplies and agents to the Yugoslav partisans in the eastern Mediterranean theater. When talking about the Clone Wars and the Rise of the Empire, he was drawing on the emotions of his own experiences. He made it feel real because it was real. As a combat veteran myself, I know those memories haunted him until his last breath. That is something which will never go away, no matter how much counseling you have or medication you take.
Thank you for your service to our country. I could not see well enough even to drive a car, so they would not train me for military duty. Imagine me at the gunnery range. "No, Sergeant? What target, sir?" Such suffering is NOT the "mental illness"--that is, a flaw in, a shortcoming of, the sufferer-- modern western culture has made of it. The solution is for those who know firsthand this hurt of the mind and the soul help those who follow on later, how to process their experiences and the lingering memories.
@@castrodan4983 Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars movie, I think it's the most accomplished. For me, no other Star Wars movie comes above this masterpiece, even if I loved the other 5 movies of course. Original trilogy and prequel trilogy = masterpiece...and no sequel trilogy in my mind.
I know a new hope came out long before the prequels, but I love how, they showed Alec Guinness looking to the right when Luke asked how he died, then showed young Obi wan looking to right as soon Anakin started to catch on fire. Old Obi wan, making a muscle memory to what happened, not being able to tell Luke exactly as it was horrifying for him.
I can relate to how Obi-Wan feels. It's hard to watch someone you love turn into something else. You hate what they've become, but at the same time you still love them, and you wish they'd come to their senses before it's too late. It hurts even more when you're the one who has to put them in their place, because you know that they'll resent you for it. Despite the fact that it had to be done.
What's sadder is that I am arguably the darker person. Yet, my former friend and her sister who were both like sisters to me was destroyed by the inability to get over her grandfather's death and so it led to them choosing the life of addiction. I fight constantly to keep my darkness under control and only unleash it under the right circumstances while they seemed to have given into it. Now, I keep them at arms lengths, have to force up barriers, and give an apathetic approach despite them being childhood friends.
Alec Guinness never knew how successful this franchise would be yet the casting for Obi Wan and telling his story has been absolutely perfect. The editing here fits into how Obi Wan remembered the Clone Wars, his brother/best friend, all before the dark times. Acting such as this comes only once a generation
Almost brings a tear to your eye to think of a man who lost his mentor so young an raised a boy to be the light of the force to watch him turn to evil , the mental torement and depression this man fought in isolation is enough to turn any man grey 😔
All those years of betrayal, solitude and watching everything you have stood for and cared about fall, Obi Wan has not lost his charisma and there is still hope in him. A true Jedi kingt and a good man
Watching clips of the original Ben makes me appreciate how well the prequels and the tv show nails his character. His voice humour as well as some of the things he says. A famous Clone Wars quote is "how uncivilized and he mentions the Jedis civilized fight style here.
Just found this, but I love the use of Anakin's Dark Deeds. Probably one of my most favorite songs from the whole series. And followed by Anakin's Betrayal, dude stop killing me like this.
Good lord. So well done. Between the prequels and sequel trilogy, the shining beacon has been Obi-Wan. Ewan should be commended to the fullest for giving the fans what they deserve (continuity) in the best way possible. His dedication to mimicking Sir Alec Guinness, and telling the story that needed to be told speaks volume to his character as a human being and his character as a fan. I hope his uncle Dennis recognizes the awesome power that his family holds over millions of fans.
This is absolutely tearjerking and made me very emotional well done!!! The Jedi Council would be pleased with you!!! You are granted the rank of master
Alec Guinness role as Obi Wan Kenobi made this movie into the classic it now is. An outstanding actor in his days he is truly missed!! Rest in peace Alec!!
The way he briefly looks down when asked; "How did my father die" 😔 The caution. The shame. The trauma. And all this portrayed before the prequels gave it light. Guiness as Obi was legendary.
Obi wan had to learn to deal with lost his whole life so his final lesson was to teach Luke to let go and accept lost as it comes but to never give up fighting
If obiwan isn't your favorite character, you're wrong. He is the epitome of over coming adversity, and when he was asked to fight again, he was ready and willing. After going through hell, he was willing to do so again without hesitation
Nerf herder please! Asohka fits the bill of overcoming adversity better! Obi wan repeats the same mistakes as the OR JEDI by recruiting and radicalising a youngster into committing acts of terror.
This has been one of my favorite edits to watch. The emotion, the pure dread on Obi-Wan's face just goes to show how excellent of an actor Alec Guiness truly was.
I never really paid attention to Mark's facial expression when Obi tells him he was a pupil of his until he turned and betrayed his father. It's like 1 of the biggest wtf bro looks ever. really good acting in that scene..
I just finished watching this video for the first time after having watched the Obi-Wan series on Disney+ and I'm truly blown away. I don't have words to describe how incredible this edit is and how perfectly it aligns the two trilogies. Much like Sir Alec Guinness' acting in this scene, this edit has aged beautifully, lining up even better within the canon now that Obi-Wan has released and explored his PTSD in the aftermath of fighting his fallen friend. Never has the prequel trilogy transitioned so perfectly into the original trilogy as now. 17 years later and the road from Revenge of the Sith to A New Hope at last has a logic behind it that I can wrap my head around. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I always talk about this video with my brother in the fact that he acted like so much was bothering him when he had no idea the kind of life his character had in the prequels! Man such amazing acting!!
This is one of the very few videos that actually made me cry 🥲 Being in my thirties, I grew up with the remastered originals and the prequel trilogy. It has been a huge part of my childhood and this video perfectly expresses the whole tragedy that Anakin's life and his friendship with Obi-Wan has been.
Anakin’s Dark Deeds from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is one of my favorite scores of all Star Wars. Much love and respect 🫡 to John Williams who provided such phenomenal scores and soundtracks for all nine Star Wars films 1977-2019
It always gets me every time. Even when seeing the new Obi Wan series, he remembered Anakin Skywalker fondly and remembered him for who he was, not the monster that he became. I well up literally when he says "And he was a good friend."
Did obi wan blame Vader for order 66 because he said he helped the empire hunt down and destroy they Jedi knights plus rex something similar but his brothers not vader
This video shows how perfectly planned and well fore-thought the whole star wars saga already was decades before the prequels were filmed. You may dislike the prequels for many reasons but you can't say they do not tell a beautiful and complete story together with the originals. And keeping that in mind, the sequels are just a slap in the face for all those who care about anything more than just mindless sci-fi crap when it comes to a star wars movie. Sure, the sequels have better special effects than prequels and originals altogether, but I'd rather watch a sci-fi movie with no special effects at all but with a beautiful story, than watch a crap movie with a ton of modern special effects and no story behind.
Every time I see these videos where Obi-Wan claims to never owning a droid I feel like he’s just trolling Luke. The amount of time he spent with R2 is too much to just forget.
I love how Alec Guinness depicts someone how has been through so much, and with the prequels, and obi wan Kenobi, it helped complete obi wans character. And Guinnesses face when he tells Luke about his father, really means it taunts him. I can not wonder how bad it would feel in obi wans place.
6:58 It was the spiteful declaration of hatred Anikin gave Obi-Wan in this moment that hurt worse than anything else... All the sweetest memories of Luke's father were soured in an instant... when those three terrible words roared from Anikin's mouth and were stabbed deeply into Obi-Wan Kenobi's heart.
@@kumo9993did obi wan blame Vader for order 66 because he said that he helped the empire hunt down and destroy they Jedi knights because rex said something similar
Alec Guiness's facial expressions as he's remembering work sooo well!! Who'd have thought 20 years earlier this would have connected together like this! Amazing! 😍
Man, this was the first time I noticed Anakin slaughtered the younglings in the Jedi Council Room, where the oldest wisest Jedi met... where they felt safe...
The worst is the first youngling he kills actually paid him the respect of calling him master :( I imagine that was a twist in what remained of anakins soul that he knew he had to purge.. The Jedi teach that once you step down the dark path then forever will it dominate your destiny, yet the force is clearly shown in the movies that if anything it the light that will always try to reach you!
Whoever edited together the first episode of the Obi-Wan show definitely watched this… seeing an active shooter situation in Star Wars days after Uvalde was heartbreaking but also the easiest most relevant and uncontroversial political statement Star Wars could ever have made.
What makes this even more heartfelt for me is how I remember as a kid when the prequel movies just came out and how far gone those times now are. Kinda like an emotional nostalgia trip.
I hope everyone enjoys this version of "Before The Dark Times."

This gives me PTSD let alone Obi Wan. My god Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor were/are such good actors. Masters of their trade. And I so appreciate all the work Ewan did to become Obi Wan. What a legend.
If only the Kenobi show had glimpsed its potential...
@@ChismTuggletrue the show is Oki it's painful to sit first 5 episodes but episode 6 makes up for it

You Honor Me.
May The Force Be With You...Always.
@@ChismTuggle May the Force be with you as well
This is beautiful.
Then he's forced to fight Anakin, only to watch him burning up while screaming "I HATE YOU!"
How much can one heart take?
@@SeanRee let's see how the Kenobi series turns out

This is an absolutely brilliant cut. Alec Guiness' performance is so perfect. Major sad feels repeatedly with all the weight of the history and the emotion. The footage of Kenobi having to kill his brothers in arms is emotionally brutal. The story of the clones is utterly tragic.
Thrilled you enjoyed. I was never quite satisfied with the edits of this idea I had found previously...so I decided to make my own! Haha. I wanted one that truly felt complete, and captured the whole range of emotions required.

@@ChismTuggle PS I just reread my last comment and when I say shoulders of giants I don't mean any disrespect at all to you or your work or insinuate you're not a giant yourself! More thinking of all the people over so many years who in various media added their own part to the saga.
@@chrisinstasis7986 oh I completely agree with you!
It certainly helps that Alec Guiness fought in WW2
Anakin: "How well would you sleep knowing I failed you?"
Obi Wan: "Not very well I imagine, luckily that isn't true and never will be."
_19 years later he's aged 30 years and is constantly having flashbacks_
❤
What target, sir?"
Such suffering is NOT the "mental illness"--that is, a flaw in, a shortcoming of, the sufferer-- modern western culture has made of it. The solution is for those who know firsthand this hurt of the mind and the soul help those who follow on later, how to process their experiences and the lingering memories.
He had PTSD cuz the scenerio is identical with what he had been go through

Original trilogy and prequel trilogy = masterpiece...and no sequel trilogy in my mind.
I've watched this off and on again for the last few years. And every time it gives me goosebumps..
Remembering dark times in your life is always hard...
So is wondering if the future will be darker than the present. Which increasingly seems to be the case...
It seems that you have a dear friend, or family member, that suffers from addiction.
@@dickrichards5254 He's not an addict but he definitely has problems.
Goddamn is the dark side a wonderful metaphor for addiction regardless of your own experience
1:01 fantastic acting. You can almost tell he’s remembering his past self in images when watching the original film. I can’t unsee it now.
Almost brings a tear to your eye to think of a man who lost his mentor so young an raised a boy to be the light of the force to watch him turn to evil , the mental torement and depression this man fought in isolation is enough to turn any man grey 😔
The way he holds back his emotion that takes the resolve of a true Jedi .

No character has suffer like Obi-Wan.

It was the spiteful declaration of hatred Anikin gave Obi-Wan in this moment that hurt worse than anything else...
All the sweetest memories of Luke's father were soured in an instant... when those three terrible words roared from Anikin's mouth and were stabbed deeply into Obi-Wan Kenobi's heart.
