    I never noticed how big the smoke deflectors are on 844. Damn.

    • @tonyburzio4107
      @tonyburzio4107 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The smoke deflectors were necessary because ALCO created a blast pipe with less restriction, so the smoke wouldn't blow up the stack with as much force. This improved the performance of the engine, but smoked out the crew... :-)

      Trivia item. If you think that, then it would be appropriate to call the engineer an "acrobat". From the Greek "acros" meaning "on the edge".

    I've never really understood the point in greasing the rails when reactive effort is already a uphill battle for locomotives.

    • @krakenwoodworxkennedy9954
      @krakenwoodworxkennedy9954 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      They lubricate the inside of the wheel. Just on the flange, it keeps from binding on tight curves. The flat part of the rail - you want as much grip as possible..

    • @MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC
      @MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeap they are only supposed to grease the inside edge not the tops.

    • @TheBeeMan1994

      Yeah you grease the inside edge, as a MoW worker, ive seen some pretty trashed rails if they dont get lube on curves

    I don't know. I think those side panels were just in the way; blinders on the iron horse, masking the engine's true beauty.

      They WERE... until the mishap that happened prior. 844 has a system to allow it to control a diesel coupled behind it for extra power, but in this instance, the diesel ended up pushing 844 with its brakes locked on... what happened here was that the wheels got flat spots put into them from sliding for so long. They greased the rails because 844 is a big engine that can't handle sharp turns well due to how long it is. greasing the rails before a sharp turn lessens the wear and tear for the rails and the locomotive's wheels. The sharp turn leads to the closest place they could repair the wheels.

    • @Armageddon_71
      @Armageddon_71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PowerTrain611 Couldn't you just pull the brakes on the diesel and let the 844 wheel slip the flat spots out?

    • @PowerTrain611
      @PowerTrain611 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Armageddon_71 Nope. The problem with that is A). It's nowhere near as precise as a wheel lathe and B). Wheelslip for steam locomotives can have disastrous consequences. The friction caused by the wheels slipping creates heat.
      Ever seen how they put the big metal tires on a steamer's driving wheels? They expand it by about a quarter inch by heating it up so they can slip it onto the wheel. When it cools, it shrinks back and hugs the surface of the outer diameter of the wheel.
      Same concept, but in reverse. There was a picture I once saw with a B&O locomotive sitting pretty in the middle of the mainline with one of its tires leaning against the rods, completely off the wheel center. In this particular photo they were able to stop the train without major devastation being done, but other engines haven't been so lucky.
      Imagine what would happen to the transmission of a car if you were to drop a metal ring on it while the gears are spinning at full speed. Bad stuff, right? now imagine doing basically the same thing to a pressure vessel that weighs 450 tons and carries people at 70 mph.

      They greased the rails (a bit too well) to help 844 on the right curve off the UP main in Round Rock that leads into GRR. She slipped and slided about a mile or so.

    • @ziiofswe
      @ziiofswe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @texaseagletrains
      @texaseagletrains 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the curve is narrow. The problem was that they greased more than just the curve. The curve was at least 1/2 a mile before this spot.
