    I forgot about this exercise- it's great for developing strong connection throughout the range. The AA exercise is basically twang, the way I understand it (do you have a video about pharyngeal?). At any rate, both this and the chest voice video are important and you will never find your mixed voice without it. You'll also want to keep the chest voice strong. I didn't, and my highest pitches have gone back to being falsetto.
    One last thing- which has caused me a lot of confusion and frustration: Always warm up your chest voice first! If you only warm up your head voice the high notes will be there, but they'll be falsetto. In the past year I've gotten a lot of things backwards about singing, but this experience has led to a bread crumb trail back to what worked and the wonderful thing is that your chest voice can be made stronger much faster than your head voice.

    I heard the metaphor for this one time. Your voice should be like a duck. At the vertex of its wake, it glides along peacefully, even though its legs are paddling frantically. In the same way, the air used to create good cord closure must be worked intensely and carefully monitored to create a very sharp laser-like sound.

    I love how this guy can demonstrate doing it wrong so well!
    And then how to do it right.
    I've been trying to sing for 50yrs and had private lessons and two online 1 year courses and still could not get through my vocal break!
    Been watching your videos for about 4 days and immediately this bratty sound got me through my break and I'm getting better at it each day!
    When I feel the sound behind my eyebrows now I don;t feel anything in my throat and the singing is so effortless!
    I don't know if this is correct yet and I know I'm still far from good but this is incredible for me!
    Thank you so much for these videos. ❤

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congratulations on your progress! Just one thing -- the sensation behind the eyebrows you may not always feel. It will depend on the range you're in, the vowel you are singing, and the intensity level you're at. So, just notice those resonance sensations you feel, but don't get too caught up in them and chase them.
      Thanks for watching. If you need more help, I'd love to work with you one-on-one.

    This is hurting my throat? Feels like the same tension I feel when I (inappropriately) sing. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Unfortunately, it is hard to tell what you might be doing wrong without seeing and hearing what you're doing. My first guess is that with the AA, you might be over-engaging the muscles of the throat (they engage really readily for that sound), and thus, causing the throat to squeeze more. That might not be the only thing occurring, though.
      Why don't you send me a short clip demonstrating the issue, and I'll give you some quick feedback on it. I sent you a private message.

    Aweeeeee-some video! Is it just me or are most of the vocal lesson videos comprised almost entirely of other people singing? When they do finally get around to the technical aspect of what they're trying to "teach" you, it is merely a description of said technique, no why, how, do, don't, etc...(unless you pay). Your videos are the exact opposite, informative, descriptive, technical, and easy to understand. Keep it up. If i had a reliable source of income I would definitely send some donations. Seriously man, thank you. Oh and pay no mind to the 6 dislikes, I know at least one of those votes came from my frustrated room mate after painfully listening to the sounds of aweeee and naoooooo reverberate throughout our apartment. For the longest time, I thought the "OH" vowel in this exercise was Edge. It wasn't until two nights ago while listening to a podcast from New York that this form of OH (OE) is Overdrive! Going back to this video again and practicing the OH unconstricted my AA vowel and now my voice is free after being tied up in knots for a year. It didn't help with singing the OE, but I figured out that it sounds like OH with EH on top of it. I write this as "UW" or "EU".
    FYI: What messed my voice up to begin with was the SS creak/fry exercises in combination with a weakened chest voice from singing in falsetto too high and too loudly.

    • @into.the.wood.chipper.
      @into.the.wood.chipper. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still struggle, man. It's probably the acid reflux, but high notes get more and more thin and strident, even when not splatting the vowel. It's excessive twang with unintended distortion from what seems like the result of trying to take chest voice too high by not modifying early enough.

    There'sone thing I can't anderstand - should I raise my soft palate, or not?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ирруматор 666 Thanks for the feedback! Raising the soft palate is not something you specifically need to worry about. The main thing to focus on is making sure you're not nasal -- meaning if you pinch your nose while sustaining a note, the sound shouldn't change. Sometimes the soft palate will be higher (such as with the OO exercise) or sometimes a little lower (such as with the AH exercise), but either way, just make sure you're not nasal.

      FashionforEver99 Do you have a low speaking voice for a female? If so, then it just means you might have to pay a little closer attention to your technique than those with the naturally high voices. You might be running into an issue with vowel modification. Try using the tip I show in this video with the hands as you are doing the YAA/NO exercises, and see if that helps you to go higher more comfortably.

When applying this to vocalization excercises In the lowest part of my register I have difficulties to keep constant the level of brightness, If i manage to mantain the brightness, the note tends to crackle a little bit, could it be because I still lack of control for brightness or maybe I'm doing something wrong. • @VocalLiberation

      Both things are needed, as they address different parts of the voice. When it's all said and done, you want clearness (intelligibility) AND depth at the same time. When most people are training, they are already skewed one way or the other. Some people (particularly those who are soft spoken and very shy) have neither developed. So it just depends on where you are at in the training process.

    Hello! Thanks for your videos! very clearly explained.
    question though, should i be exhaling through my nose while doing the exercises or should i be holding my breath (in my nose)?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +joyce janik You're welcome.
      Sound is only made when you're exhaling air. So as long as you're making sound, there is not much more you need to worry about. You might, however, feel slightly like you're holding your breath in your throat as you do this. That's ok. That's your cords closing.

    Hey sir! I have a deep low voice and I don’t sound clear when singing especially when I’m trying hit high notes, when I try and do the high notes I really do want that high Piercing sound/quality because when I do it you can’t hear that long sustain and resonance you hear after singing a word loud because my voice is low and muddy if that makes any sense. will these exercises really help me get a clearer voice especially when singing those high notes?? thanks and please reply

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These will help, but in general, you probably need to work on getting your articulators more active. Without hearing you, just based on your description, you probably don't move your jaw much and your tongue is probably lazy. Your tongue needs to get used to being more active, especially on EH and EE. Your mouth needs to open more too. My video on tongue tension will probably help (with getting the tongue out of its comfort zone). Your cheek area and entire face will become more active. You will feel like you are ridiculously exaggerating your pronunciation for everything. This will be a temporary phase as your articulators are learning to be more active. Get good at this in the range going up to D4 (D above middle C).

  • @yousaf653
    @yousaf653 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Marnell will those help me increase my range? I can do the both (mens and womens) very easily with compression but I still can't get above f4#

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how high you're talking. If you're wondering if it will take you way into high tenor range and soprano range, then no. But will it get you into your first bridge? Yes. F#4 is plenty sufficient for this exercise. Once you can do it up to that note, then it's time to focus on your vowels more and start addressing vowel modification. If you try to do this exercise beyond your first bridge without approaching the vowels correctly, it will create strain in the throat.

    Hey Marnell, I'm really enjoying these exercises and think they are helping with clarity. However, I also notice it tends to quickly tire out my voice, and makes it a bit hoarse. Is it possible that doing this too much is harmful in some way to the vocal cords, or is it safe to go at it?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible you might be doing these exercises a little too high or a little too loudly for your current development level. Try changing one variable at a time and practice it that way for a couple of days and see if you notice any changes.

    • @jonathanwachter3715
      @jonathanwachter3715 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that you mention it, I am probably doing both of those. I'll keep it more gradual, thanks for the advice man!

    When I do scales a lot sometimes I start losing my upper range(when I try to sing only air comes out without sound).Does it mean I have bad tecnique in the upper register? Do you know what could be the problem?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +marinojuresko When you say a lot, it depends on how long you're talking. If this is happening after just 20 minutes of singing, that's definitely a technique problem. If it's happening after like 3 hours of singing, that means you've been singing too long and need to give your voice a rest.
      When you get only air coming out after singing for a while, that indicates some inflammation of the cords. In this case, it sounds like it would be a technique problem. What exactly is causing that is very hard to say. The best way to determine that would be to set up a one-on-one session with me where we could delve into the problem more completely.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paola M Ah, ok. So the C#5. If that's where you're first beginning to have trouble, then you're doing well. It's probably a little bit of a resonance and coordination issue that you're running into (for now), so this is what I want you to do instead. Skip to part 2 of the clip when I have you do the NO. We're going to modify the instructions a little bit. Keep your hands up to the face the way I explain i the clip below so the jaw muscles and corners of the lips stay relaxed.
      th-cam.com/video/cV1rxXG4JHw/w-d-xo.html
      With your hands up to your face, the sound will be a little darker than what you hear in this clip for both the YAA and NO. That's ok for now. You're just trying to get the larynx and jaw to free up a bit more. Although I don't play that high in this clip, with your hands up to your face, it should help you get up to at least an Eb5 (Eb above tenor high C). Once you can do it comfortably with your hands up to your face, then try it with your hands down, going for the same feeling of relaxation in the jaw muscles (the muscles off to the side where the palms were touching the face).
      After you can do that, then try to go back to the NO the way I originally did it in this video. So, you will go for a bit of a brighter sound like I do here, but you want to focus on doing it with the jaw more relaxed and the mouth in a bit more of a neutral position. Even though the mouth will be more neutral looking, you can still produce almost the same bright kind of sound. This should help you to no longer feel like the voice wants to break at the C#5.

    So if I keep practicing my vocal cords will always close properly when I sing, right??

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily. If you're using to being airy and breathy all the time when you sing, then you might have to intentionally try to create this brighter, clearer sound. As you get used to it, then you won't have to think of it as much anymore.

      After a few weeks of daily practice, you should hear your voice getting clearer. However, getting that clearer sound consistently in songs could take much longer due to individual habits and preconceived notions you have in your head.

    • @hellodarkness9008
      @hellodarkness9008 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Darkness People dont need to lower the larynx when singing anymore. Thats just so you sound more whole whenever you sing but its not even necessary. Raising the larynx is ok as long as it doesn’t cause any unnecessary tension.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's engaging and strengthening certain muscles in your throat as well as sensitizing your ear to that particular sound.
