      Fruit, i strongly recommend you find some extra money because basically you can't really learn to sing well from videos on you tube but i would say this - Marnells videos are very good. I say this, from experience. I was learning to sing from what i thought was an excellent vocal course of audio recordings. The explanations were excellent. But, i ended up with an injury adn now that i've found a decent teacher, i've realised that I was missing a whole lot - misunderstanding a whole lot - on those lessons. You really do need a teacher standing right in front of you in real time to correct your mistakes and your understanding. Get an extra job so that you can afford singing lessons with a well trained professional teacher.

    "You breathe in too much air."
    I cannot agree more! We often make that mistake when we do bigger songs, thinking that 'breathing more' will 'give more resonance' when in reality it tightens up the sound a literal lot.

    • @MayastarOfficial
      @MayastarOfficial 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Timliu92 That's so true. It's like trying not to sneeze if you over breathe (I didn't mean for that to rhyme!)

    • @aacha548
      @aacha548 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Again so true. My current teacher has just taught me - over months - that this is not needed. Its so so liberating to find out how to sing without so much air. But he doesn't touch on that here.

    This is by far THE BEST vocal tutorial on the internet! The depth you go into is Brilliant! I have developed a voice disorder Spasmodic Dystonia. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would have a voice problem. Your voice effects everything you do in life. I am thinking if I learn about how the voice works and learn how to use my voice (again or in a different way) I might be able to lessen the effects of this disorder. Thank you for taking the time to teach this. I never knew there was so much to learn about using your voice. Absolutely outstanding instruction and knowledge!

    Thanx for making it clear that it's something you have to practice to get right, but most importantly, that the larynx will go up and down slightly with pitch, as nature dictates. This is because I've heard other coaches claim u have 2 keep the larynx down ALL THE TIME, and I was confused how ANYONE can achieve this. Thanx again for the clarity, Bro.

    Marnell, I have just started watching your videos and I am very happy with your simplistic, yet effective style of teaching (If I ever get good enough for voice lessons, you are at the top of my list). Good work :)

    what you said about breathing in too much air is the most important thing. We definitely all make that mistake. When you expand your ribs and stomach, you're taking in most of the air you need just by that act, you don't have to "over inhale". That's what I realized over a year ago.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Well, with this, you don't even have to consciously think of expanding your ribs. If you have ever tried blowing out all of your air and then holding the air out of you until you feel a strong urge to breathe, all you have to do is let go of the abs and the air comes rushing into you! The ribs and stomach expand on their own without you having to give it too much attention. We just learn to use a more subtle form of that for singing. :)

    The larynx has been the bane of my existence (that and not knowing how to tell what vocal type I am) but the biggest issue I had was thinking "No matter what I do, the larynx won't stay still. It always moves." I felt so relieved and happy to know that it was normal for it to move in a minimal, relaxed way when singing, which is what I experience for the most part. I was creating tension by trying to keep it from moving! I have a long way to go, but this was amazing and a huge step! Thank you!

    Just wanna say this was major for me, just after I did the excercise I heard improvement. I've stuttered throughout my entire life and during my childhood it was the most severe and my voice in general always felt fucked because I was always anxious and scared to open up my mouth and speak, and I always felt weird in my throat whenever I wanted to speak, like very uncomfortable. So my singing would suffer too, I'd strain a lot and not sing to my fullest potential. Doing this excercise made an instant impact, thanks a lot man🙏🏻🙏🏻

    A Great tutorial,,,,, I used to sing with my larynx just pulling up all the time,,, yet had a vocal fry raspy voice,,,and I sang for 5 decades,,,then I studied with a vocal therapist, and learned to raise my speaking voice a bit, to get rid of fry,,,then I did a lot of massage around my throat and face and chin area,,, Now I can place my larynx where I need to when I want with my mind,,,slightly up or neutral! Your video was one of the best I have seen,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you for posting this video. This is a very important topic for studying singing. However, when you are comparing the different ways of singing, I suggest you sing in the exact melody with the 3 larynx positions. So it is easy for people to compare an apple with another apple. If you change the melody in one of the mode, it is hard to judge the effects. Are they different because you were singing in different styles or in different larynx positions.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi. I understand your point. I guess I should have clarified it in the video more. When the larynx is not in a neutral position, it becomes more rigid and inflexible -- that is, it gets locked into place and prevents you from having dynamics and agility. The larynx can get locked into both a high AND a low position. The 2nd example was to demonstrate that the voice was able to move (that is, not locked).

    What helped me truly understand what a nuetral larnynx was time itself, It feels like a floating sensation, What i had to do was forget all the lessons i learned dropping it down and this and that and just let it move on its on, Thats what made me learn, When i let it move where it wanted, i let the larnx control me instead of me controlling it. in that moment my voice was finnaly more free! I dont speak with a free larnx so it was such a new experience, Just to let it go do what it does naturally idk why youtube videos was pushing me in the wrong dirrection...:

    Marnell, can you please do a video on increasing power when you sing?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I think you might have already seen them, but my videos on taking the chest voice higher and also the one on singing more clearly cover a lot of aspects of how to increase power.
      th-cam.com/video/CTDtiaVeEJY/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/T99xgK8MpXM/w-d-xo.html
      Without sufficient chest voice activity, you will not have much power. Without proper vowel clarity, your potential power will be muffled.
      There is a little more that I'm going to add to it in a video I'm working on now for resonance, though, because that lets you fine tune things to get even more power out of your voice. Stay tuned for that one!

    Thank you for this very information video! I started my singing journey Fall 2017 and have been taught by several different instructors. 😩. Thank goodness, I finally found an effective-technical vocal instructor, 🌟
    Sometimes, I feel like I am inhaling too much air. How does one know the correct amount of air to take in prior to singing and speaking?

    This is one thing that I struggle with a lot, but not because I find it hard to sing with a neautral larynx. Instead, because I listen to many artists that often don't sing with their larynx neutral.
    Take "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning for example. He sings with a higher larynx. I see this a lot in 50s and 60s music!
    Elvis Presley often sang with a lower larynx to get a deeper sound.
    I think the larynx can be used stylistically, rather than always having to be neutral.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course the larynx can be used stylistically. Many things with the voice can be done stylistically. But you must also realize that every sound has a "cost". There are some sounds that come with a low cost, and some that come with a higher cost. As long as you are aware of this as you are singing and making conscious, intelligent choices, then all is well.
      The point of this channel is to help you find a "middle ground" for YOUR vocal capabilities. That is, the place where everything functions correctly from high to low, loud to soft without unnecessary strain or restriction getting in the way. Once you can do that, then it's up to you to decide how much you will deviate from there.

    what about when you sing up to like A4 to C5 range. Can you really still move your larynx side to side when hitting notes that high?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you for such a great question! When in the extremes of your range, different things happen. On the extreme high end, the muscles that stabilize the larynx engage a bit more, especially when singing loudly. So you may not be able to move the larynx from side to side. What's important to take away from this video is how the throat, jaw, and area under the chin feel free when moving the larynx in your spoken range. Then you're just looking for that same sensation when you're higher up.

      Omega-Xis Wow! Thank you! I'm honored. I'm actually going to be making a video on the speaking voice soon, so once it is up, feel free to share it with your friend.

    While that interpretation of Over the Rainbow could do with a few runs less, the information in the video is laid out very clearly. :- ) Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

      Primož Vidovič Thanks! And I guess I should have explained this in the video, haha. I had chosen to do the runs there to demonstrate that the voice is free from tension. If I tried to do the same thing in either one of those incorrect positions, I would not have been able to do any runs -- the voice would have been too rigid!
      In a certain sense, you can say runs are a form of an agility/flexibility exercise to make sure the voice is remaining supple, as are exercises involving dynamics.
      Thanks again for watching!

      Marnell Sample if that's the case, it would have been better if you had sung straight with a neutral larynx first, then show a second neutral larynx demo with all the (hopefully better executed) runs. I must say I appreciate you explaining what exactly speech level means. No one did it that well before.

    Great Video, if you always pushing your larynx high to grab higher notes, the quickest remedy is to just force or push it down, or?

    great lesson it was just missing one simple exercise to practice what you said

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The exercise was in the video. It's the breathing exercise. You just apply that to anything you sing. It's also the same exercise I describe in "Singers stop overbreathing".

    Great video man, very helpful. You have a nice voice. Your explanations were very clear and I found some humor in the way you explained them too. Just one question, how can one maintain a neutral larynx when singing louder?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wilburne Mathurin Thanks man!
      And that's a good question. That's where a lot of coordination comes into play to help you maintain the neutral larynx. Part of it is vowel modifications though. You might want to check out Episode 3 in The Path to Vocal Mastery that Phil and I did. We go into this topic a bit, especially in the second half of the video, showing how to deal with each vowel.

    I still don’t understand how to loosen the jaw (underneath surface) I have a country-ish twang and my Larynx is super tight. As soon as I put my attention to whether or not my throat is relax I instantly tense up and became to swallow

    Fantastic and clear video, Marnell. What happens when your native language is Spanish? I have been told to put on a British accent when I sing...will that help?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paola M Same rules apply even for Spanish, although I do generally notice that for those whose mother tongue is Spanish, the larynx tends to want to be on the high side and there is also a tendency towards singing nasal. You don't necessarily have to put on a British accent, although even for Americans, that sometimes helps, but mainly with certain words -- you know, words that end in R like "lover". Thinking more like a British accent for words like that helps to keep the tongue and throat more free on the R.
      But in Spanish, most of your syllables end in vowels, so you're lucky. Here I sang a little bit of "Contigo en la distancia", so you can see how the neutral larynx applies to Spanish. th-cam.com/video/h-5A-0c2DiM/w-d-xo.htmlm42s

    I don't feel like focusing on your larynx is going to make you automatically do vocal runs. That requires a bit more skill than just the isolation of one part of your voice but, hey, good lesson, sounds good too man. Keep it up.

      To be honest that made me immediately disregard everything in this video. That was just ridiculous. Blatant showing off and it completely ruined the comparison of the difference between high, low, and neutral larynx.
