As ongoing protests against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States are met with militarised police action, tear gas, the National Guard, and threats of military intervention from representatives of the Trump administration and U.S. Congress, many observers are asking if this is what American fascism looks like. It is a question the Trump campaign itself raised when it decided to revive a forgotten political slogan, "America First" in 2016. In this 10-Minute Talk, Sarah Churchwell offers a brief history of "America First" and answers the perennial question of American fascism: can it happen here?

@@ilinfestissumam3232No. It means, literally, we will put our country before any one else. That’s it. It’s in the name. It doesn’t mean suddenly we want to conquer the world. It means we would rather help our own than millions trying to illegally enter our country, or to help our own downtrodden instead of sending billions annually to Israel. The woman in the video is an internationalist propagandist who is arguing in favor of open borders and the eradication of national sovereignty. Do your own research instead of listening to some overpaid ideologue.

Yale and many other scholars have repeatedly placed American proto-fascism as the basis for a lot of the ideological basis of European fascism. This very succinct but detailed overview deserves a much more elaborated session, now more than ever! Thanks for posting!

There is something about American Fascism that seems rather unique in comparison with the European variety.
It's that strain of Puritanism and the contradictory love affair it has with status, bound by the coordinates of Capitalist ideology.
A subtle difference between Puritanism and dogmas of Purity.
When I think of an American Nazi, I think of Patrick Bateman reading Julius Evola.

This is a hallmark of Liberal Capitalism...Weimar Germany is an example..the Liberals always fall into the trap....BUT it goes back even further ..the Greeks/ Roman's embraced Republic because of the failure of Pereclian Democracy to solve and placate the existential crisis of its time..and so it lends itself to the necessity of the Dictator ...this was also the case with Napoleon and France as well as Francos Spain.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. The times we are going through here in America are some of the darkest times I've seen in my 6 decades. I grew up in the Jim Crow south. Grandpa even took us, kids, to a George Wallace convention. I saw the riots in "68" in Milwaukee because we had moved there the year before. Still, I don't believe the dangers we faced then are as great as they are now.
I believe there is a dangerous rise in fascism in the United States. I have been doing my part to stop it by warning politicians of the danger I see, and of the atrocities of WWII that were committed by fascist states with concentration camps. I also have been reminding them of the retribution unleashed onto the Nazis in the form of firestorms and complete destruction of their cities.
I could imagine the future of America if the fascists ever gained total power here. I believe that at the end of it, the world would unleash its fury upon us. Our cities might burn in firestorms.

I grew up in Alabama and have lived my whole life here and what’s scary is that I’m starting to recognize and see the same horrors that my grandparents told me about seeing when they grew up here in Jim Crow times. I agree with you 100%, we are at a serious cross roads in our country and I’m horrified at how close we’ve come to the breaking point. I believe the Republican Party is the greatest threat to our democracy and that they are full on fascist. Thank you for sharing your story and perspective, it’s great to see that someone else sees this happening too.

"America first" is just a slogan. There are underlying implications based on the policy desires and rhetoric of those who shout that slogan.
Basically to summarize, the ideology believes the world is a zero-sum game: meaning what hurts another country, helps us. It's a ideology that dehuamzines anything that isn't like them in terms of religion, race and politics.
That is the overarching principle of "America First," and those who shout that such as our president.
