Cool Nuno story -- I was one of the journalists on Rihanna's 777 media tour back in like 2013. Basically she toured 7 countries in 7 days and piled all of us in a 777 plane for the week to go with her. Nuno was her touring guitarist. It was one of the craziest and most tiring weeks of my life. By the end of the trip, flying from Berlin back to NYC for the final show, we were all exhausted. We had all been promised an interview with Rihanna, but it never happened. So we all were pretty over it and just wanted to get back home. As we descended into NYC after another red eye flight, Nuno emerged from first class with his acoustic guitar and started playing. Here we were feeling largely ignored by RiRi and Nuno took it upon himself to show a little love our ways. He played a few songs for around 20 minutes, the entire cabin providing the vocals. I wish I could remember what he played... it was a few songs that everyone knew the lyrics to. It definitely picked us up and I'll never forget it.

No disrespect to Herman, but this is literally my first time hearing Nuno in my 62 years, 46 of which has been playing, 25 as a touring pro in an east coast regional band, the rest as a studio musician. Nuno is what I call, a composition soloist, as opposed to muscle memory soloist. He is producing the solo live, as he plays, very rare in today's music scene. Of course, he's not from this particular sterile era, either. His funky chord speed riff was just as exciting as any of his other riffs. There is a point where muscle memory, like most of us have developed, morphs into something else. Something much more extraordinary. Jimmy had it, Vaughn, Beck, Eddie, Vai and others from past generations. Nuno has it, and thank GOD he's still with us. A living breathing example of what all guitarist should strive for! The fundamental principles of his performing style, playing style and composition style, can translate to any Genre. Bruce Lee once said, " Be like water!" Nuno seems to have achieved that with his guitar. Simply amazing. Now, I have to go buy Extreme's entire discography. I would appreciate suggestion as to which ones to purchase first, which songs most guitarist concentrate on. Maybe I can still learn a few extra riffs, even at my age, or I can, at least, die trying! That would be a great way to go!:) Better than sex!!!!!

Nuno’s ABSURD f’n guitar solo in the new single “Rise” brought me to this interview as I’ve kind of gone down the rabbit hole. As soon as I heard it, I was stopped dead in my tracks. I now know exactly what Nuno means when he says he won’t release anything unless he is wowed by it. First half of solo reminds me of the beauty of EVH, then the last section made me go “wtf was that?!?!?!”. That was all Nuno. Genius.

Nuno is one of the truly "timeless" talents that I have had the honor to witness in my lifetime. He has a fundamental view that the guitar is also a percussion instrument, and with his "muting" technique he has made a certain type of sound "his own". This is something the very best players have been able to do, and even though I would argue that most of the "virtuoso players" have implemented the guitars ability to be percussive, Nuno did it in a way that will ensure he is credited for it over time. And that means that history won't be able to forget the skills. His unbelievably high level of dexterity, his incredible legato technique, his "off the charts" pick speed/technique, etc etc etc. Or that there probably wasn't a better rhythm player that ever existed, certainly not in the "generation" he played in. Add in the songwriting ability, along with the fact he was one of the best harmony vocalists ever, and you have a true "legend" in the sum of the parts. That he has a great personality and sense of humor (while remaining very humble) makes him great "role model" material. The next generation of players should absolutely be studying Nuno, because he has perfected all the necessary requirements to be a guitar hero. I would argue that nobody in history is necessarily "more skilled" than him (considering his lack of weaknesses), and that his techniques should be studied and used by future players in generations to come.
But I wasn't expecting to be as impressed with the new song (and specifically the solo) as I was! It is truly an example of a player that has become totally comfortable handling the instrument, and is capable of maaking any amount of "over the top" guitar playing both "musical" and "interesting". The message he sent to the new generation of "speed demon" players on social media sites everywhere is one that resonates loudly. It takes more than just great picking technique to become a complete player at the highest level. Congratulations to him and the whole band, they deserve the accolades. I thought they were both "under-appreciated" and "under-rated " then, so maybe now they will get the attention they always deserved.

Cool nuno and extreme story here… fall of 91 (around that time) Lol. extreme stayed around a week at a chalet at a resort where I worked in Banff Alberta Canada. I was a housekeeper and knew who these guys were and loved their first couple albums. After they checked out.. I began to clean.. ( and they we’re amazingly clean guests btw ) In the garbage I found a couple pieces of crumpled up paper with what looked to be lyrics etc, which I presumed was what they were working on for the next album.. I folded it up, placed in my pocket.. and to this day is my prize possession as turned out to be my all time favourite band. Extreme and Nuno were absolute legends in the music world. They have and are still leaving their mark wherever and whenever they play. Thank you Nuno! 🙏 god bless.

My older brother and I sang more than words acapella so they could have their first dance. As a side note a grew up visiting my grandma in Laurel Canyon. My mother went to school at Hollywood High. John Ritter was senior class president, and Merideth Baxter was in her class as well..my parents both played guitar and my mom if she has a voice that rivaled Linda Ronstad. But my older brother and I were in a band with Richard Adoradio playing so much music that came out of that lTe sixty west Hollywood Hills band Era.. CSN&Nash, The Eagles, but More than words ended up in our set list, and people always loved it. I was floored by the solo in Do you want to play. Extreme 2 Pornographitti I wore out back in 1991 learning Nuno's licks. One of the best guitarists and one of the best guitar albums of all time! Check it out kids!

So true what Nuno says at around 47:30. I've seen Extreme a bunch of times over the past 30 years and they never just mail it in -- they rock out every second they are on stage and put their all into every song

    Prof Dr Stelios Bekiros:
That’s what makes a true LEGEND, not solely a guitar legend he already is and will be, forever. Is that of a highly sophisticated, articulate, educated, intellectual ARTIST he is. A LEGENDARY PERSONALITY 🙌

    Hell yeah.
. Playing Guitar is. My Heaven.... I just like to play. Sometimes I suck.... Sometimes I surprise myself on how good I play. Or songs I write. But. It's all about playing for myself. Don't care about impressing anyone else.

Nuno is so damned good. I bought Extreme for More than words cuz I had a fight with my then-wife. We danced to it. Then the hard stuff kicked in. I turned it off, not wanting to spoil the make-up mood, but thought "I gotta hear this later". Loved it.

I'm in Australia and it took me 6 months of searching (everywhere in the world) to get Schitzophonic. Very worth it but so different from Extreme. I'm 53 now and Nuno and Eddie are my two biggest reasons for picking up a guitar. Love that Nuno did work with Baby Animals (Aus. band) too. That and the Van Halen tour influence made a huge difference! Nuno's playing and who he is make him one of my guitar gods. It's about the music for him and I love that!

I love Nuno. He has always been in my top 5 musicians. His solo album “Schizophonic” is a largely (and criminally) ignored masterpiece of pop and alternative rock perfection. Listen to “Crave”, one of the best songs on that album. The man left pieces of his soul on the pop shield of the studio microphone he sang into.

Thankyou Herman, as that was such a fantastic Interview. I understand that music is a very personal thing, but on that basis - Three Sides to Every Story is still in my TOP 5 deserted Island CD's List along with such CD's as Dark Side of the Moon. So it was so great to hear from the man himself... ; )))

I think this may be my favorite interview of all time. My first real guitar was an N2 i bought in the 90s. I was 17 when Pornograffiti came out and played it non stop for a year in my crappy honda civic. Its awesome when your heroes turn out to be legitimately awesome dudes.

My introduction to Extreme was through More than Words. I saw the video on MTV, bought the CD, played More than Words on loop 10 times, and then I let the rest of the record play... and I was blown away. The whole album was AMAZING. I was, and still am, mesmerized by Nuno.
