    She is a diva not only because of her singing skills, which is important, but because of everything she is as a person, her love and smile, victories in life's difficulties, divorced parents, a fight with a tumor, hepatitis, with seven pneumonias in a row and she managed to return, to defeat vanity... and she can convey all that through singing. Her voice takes me back to my childhood, pure emotion, untainted. she makes people feel good, and even if she is not always in the right tone, her mistakes are forgiven because of that

    Okay, I Like Sohyang, her Breath control is out of this world, her mixed voice is one of her biggest strengths. I do find her tone polarizing at times, which I think is due to me not being used to her sound.
    Her HeadVoice is another one of her biggest Strength’s in my opinion, but something that the TH-cam vocal community needs to remember, is that these vocalists and singers are human, and have flaws, they are not perfect.
    Other than that, I think she is phenomenal. Her Cover of Never Enough is Amazing.

    So Hyang Is not great only for her voice, she Is great because she uses all the vocal skills to make a whole sound épic. Her lows are not ger strenght, BUT, that doesn't mean she doesn't use it, you can hear it in "breathe, you raise me UP, hug me" she really doesn't need them because of her style. Her ascending range Is perfect and gives an impact whenever you listen a son of her. She gives epic vocal performances than others can't even buecause they don't have ability to go so soft to so strong.

    I think when it comes to singers’ lower register, it’s important to note what their actual low range is taking into consideration where their voice naturally seats.
    What i have noticed about Sohyang is that her voice sits quite high compared to other singers/sopranos so the G3s are at her most extremes. Also the way she tackles the “apparent”low notes could also give the reason a lot of people think its just weak. She usually doesn’t carry weight in her lower voice, even below D4. Its her “fairy” like style. She is capable of adding more body but her voice(it’s only my world) naturally isnt very heavy-she gives me light lyric vibes, so this doesn’t seem comfortable for her. Overall, i dont think her lower register is as weak as a whole lot of people claim it is. She also does sing in chest voice and is still comfortable around D5 so she isnt always singing in mix.

    • @allykelly
      @allykelly  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah i mean her lows are just average at best not very weak probably stylistic, sohyang has shown to be able to belt as high as G5 when she was younger but she utilize mix way more often

    • @allykelly

      Yeah that's my criteria
      Great means that the note is technically optimal free and powerful
      Good means the note is done with good technique but still has minor issue
      Decent means it's has unnecessary tension/constricted but still not severe
      Average means that the unnecessary tension almost take over the sound quality (obstruct)

    Great singer. I really enjoy Sohyangs voice when she sings traditional Korean music.
    Lows- She has a poor lower register. She is pretty foggy below Bb3.
    Mids- Same as her lower register. She has an aspirated quality that is indicative of her lack of chest development. I personally wouldn't mark hardly any of it green.
    High Belts- She hardly utilizes it post- 2016 but has shown really nice potential in the past.
    Mix- This is where She shines. She has been able to showcase great ease and stamina in her mix. Incredible
    Head voice- my favorite part of her voice. Lovely timbre and great sense of dynamics and pitch.
    Agility- not her strong point but isn't bad by any means.
    Dynamics- She has pretty nice dynamics. I would say she would be close to the level of Celine or Whitney.

    • @AlejandroHernandez-pq2wv
      @AlejandroHernandez-pq2wv ปีที่แล้ว +7

      wow!
      Could you show with examples how is the correct way to sing the weak lows and mids that Sohyang has?
      Could you also show with examples (this would take more time) how to maintain healthy belting from the middle register to the high register for more than two decades? making regular performances every year? Sohyang does that, you know?
      And finally, could you give examples of superior dynamics and agility than Sohyang? This includes vibrato, one of the most important and difficult aspects of the voice to develop. And I am talking about the correct vibrato, nerve impulse, oscillation and correct speed that goes from the abdomen to the larynx and is released with energy without any obstruction. The only thing that stops the air is the closure of the vocal cords and as a great singer rises in his register his vibrato must remain free, flowery and resonant. That you can speed up or slow down, raise and lower volume. That's part of the dynamics, right? That's what technique is about, right? to keep the throat open using the muscles that are made to close it. Sohyang is a master at this and you say that she is inferior to celine and whitney? I would like you to show me how it's done!
      And when I ask you for examples I'm not talking about telling me which singer does it better! I ask you to set the example. that is, record yourself on video singing live and share with us so that you enlighten us and we can understand how to sing.

      Range is basically limitless if you train correctly, so this question is impossible to answer
      There're sopranos who can't really sing beyond C5 in belt
      And there're tenors who can stay in the upper 5th and 6th octave in their mix or head voice
      All this is possible thanks to flexibility of our vocal cords and proper amount of training

  • @confidentriah3406
    @confidentriah3406 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Certainly an impressive vocalist, especially when it comes to her mixing and how she stays up there, phrasing and sustaining with great stamina.
    Her head voice is my favorite register of hers, it's the most beautiful tone she can deliver imo.
    Her dynamics and transitions are also very impressive, her overall control of her voice actually.
    I gotta say tho, her lows are practically non existent and I'm not the biggest fan of her tone and style of singing, making it harder for me to appreciate her signing, although I'm certain she's great.

  • @MJ-gv9no
    @MJ-gv9no ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Sohyang sometime sounds slightly nasal when she sings in English but I don't hear it in Korean at all. Is this due to her slight accent? Someone suggested it's the same with Celine due to her Canandian accent. What do you think?

    • @allykelly
      @allykelly  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People confuse with nasality and twangy they sounds similar but not the same, I'd say there has nothing to do with accent it's just Sohyang's regular approach, Celine's nasality probably has a thing to do with accent but again I'm not sure and not a big deal when Celine has shown to be able to engage her pharynx

    • @allykelly
      @allykelly  ปีที่แล้ว

      At best yes but we can't overlook that Sohyang has tendencies to tilt her laryngeal to M2 (mixed voice) ssy and Haeri has stronger column on their middle voice so those 2 take belts and Sohyang takes mixed voice
      Sohyang is still a better vocalist than both tho

    I don't think you're right with your grades in belting/mixing section, mostly cause you simply graded her actual BELTS lower (cause they're indeed more shouty and tensed, cause it's belts, duh), unlike her mixed notes (which is lighter approach and essentially not even an M1 mode anymore), simply cause they sound more pleasant, but that doesn't mean they're bad, Sohyang simply switched her approach towards more light as she aged and that's why she doesn't sound as shrill as before, cause actual upper BELTING always gonna sound shrill, no matter what you do, it's not even her fault, basically any belter sounds shrill and tensed up there, cause there's natural limit for belting in everyone's voices

    Singing is an art that can be measured. The attributes of singing can be measured and that is what allows us to hear when one singer is superior to another.
    Her voice is almost totally free of constriction thanks to the technique that she manages, which allows her to have a healthy vocal cord closure. The healthier the closure, the freer the voice, the freer the vibrato.
    Her vibrato is great, she can do correct vibrato from A3 to C6 in mixed voice and up to D6 in head voice.
    maintaining a good vibrato on all these notes in a mixed voice is a difficult task and maintaining a large space in the pharynx so that each note resonates the way this woman does is almost impossible, she takes it to another level.
    When Sohyang is in good health and energy we will never hear her closing the vowel as she moves up her range, her vowels are clear and open and it is common when she turns the vowel and makes it more lyrical. We won't hear her with a stuck vibrato either, she always sounds free and big.
    Her legato is one of the best I've heard, thanks to her mastery in air control.
    and her resonance is another level, the position of her jaw and tongue have everything to do with it.
    Although there are people who don't like Sohyang's sound, which is valid, there is no denying her amazing vocal abilities. She has bad moments like any other singer. In addition to all her health problems. I admire Whitney, Celine and many other great singers. But I have never heard another woman do what Sohyang does!

      @@allykelly What? There is no great singer who doesn't use the pharynx as a resonator even if they use the famous "twang"! It is clear that Sohyang is no exception. If it wasn't, we wouldn't be talking about a human being 😅.
      She has tensions like any other singer, I just said that her technique allows her to sing almost totally free of constrictions and I made it clear in my comment that this happens when she is in good health and energy. When she is healthy her voice is free and superior to that of any other singer. Of course if you take video clips where she is on one of the bad days you will see tension from her. The same would happen with Amber Riley, Celine Dion and Whitney. The internet is full of videos where they have bad days and sing full of tension. They are human. @@allykelly I'm not saying that Sohyang doesn't use "Twang".
      I am saying that there is no singer in the world that is considered one of the best who does not use his pharynx as a resonator. that's impossible. All great singers use the pharynx, it is something natural since the air that is expelled from the abdomen naturally passes through there. unless we are talking about an alien whose species does not have a pharynx 😅
      No singer can make his voice resonate well without a minimum of space in the pharynx and naturally the voice will resonate there. Some more and others less. When you listen to Sohyang sing with his huge resonance you can clearly notice that she has space and pharyngeal resonance.

    Thankyou for analyzing Sohyang. Udah scroll komen sampai bawah banget, ternyata orang Indonesia. Aku nggak paham tentang kind/rules of music, cuma sudah jadi fans Sohyang sejak 2018, jadi agak bisa paham dikit lah wkwkwk. Jujur, aku rasa manusiawi kalau ada kurang lebihnya manusia, khususnya penyanyi. Begitupula Sohyang. Ini mau nanggapi yang sering kritik sohyang; Sohyang selalu dibilang suaranya itu nggak berwarna (ini aku bingung, kenapa selalu dibilang nggak berwarna, dimana tendensi warna yg mereka maksud selalu jenis suara tebal dan bisa versatile (karena mereka nyebutin nama penyanyi yg punya warna, dan rata² yg suaranya tebal dan versatile); apa warna suara yang spesial itu harus begitu ya? jujur sakit hati kalau sohyang selalu dibilang suara warnanya itu biasa aja, nothing special gitu), lalu Sohyang selalu dibilang nada rendahnya jelek cenderung bad (bukannya full lyric sopran kaya sohyang emang nggak mungkin bisa nada rendah yg rendah banget kan? agak bingung, nada paling rendah utk jenis suara sohyang (yg full lyric sopran; soalnya kan jenis sopran kan banyak ya) tuh harusnya gimana ya?) lalu perihal kemampuan sohyang yang kayanya nggak sebanyak penyanyi modern sekarang (kaya whistle, growl, atau yg versatile) selalu jadi standar, kaya sohyang cuma bisa high belt doang, menang nada tinggi doang (dan signature dia high belt pula :" padahal dia bsa yg lain juga (ini hampir semua yt vocal selalu fokus ke high notenya sohyamg, ngk pernah yg lain. di IG pun begitu, paling sakit hati waktu ngecover i hv nothing, abis kena hujat perihal beda aransemen kaya yg asli dam high note, padahal david fosternya malah ngundang konser), dan selalu dibilang bahwa jadi the best singer ngk karena nada tinggi doang. Jadi, utk meraih the best singer harus bisa semua ya? padahal sohyang ini selalu konsisten, dan emang kalau dibilang ahli disitu (walau ngk banyak kemampuannya kaya penyanyi modern yg versatile, tpi dia ahli dibidang dia, bahkan diatas rata² juga). Selain itu menurutku kayanya style sohyang ini emang old style juga (aku ngk paham nyebutnya apa, cuma sohyang nih kaya penyanyi² 90an kebawah, yg dimana dia nyanyi di tahun² sekarang, jdi kaya kurang cocok sama taste/style listener sekarang), misalnya kaya pilihan lagu² sohyang juga, sohyang jarang nyanyi lagu² skrng, rata² lagu² lama, plus jujur aku ngerasa tone suara sohyang ini emang ngk bisa disemua lagu, makanya kadang banyak yg hate komen bilang nggak cocoklah, not pleasant (ini paling ngeselin), tpi kalau lagu sama tipe suaranya cocok, lagunya bakal enak banget (lebih ke gospel kalau aku rasa, sama lagu korea. tapi kalo utk lagu pop english modern, kaya kurang. Lagu never enough menurutku paling aku kurang srek, karena kaya kurang cocok dinyamyiin suara sohyang). Dan perihal overate, ini juga bingungin sih, knpa overate, rata² secara teknis berdasarkan vocal² coach emang ngakuin teknik dia itu bagus, healty, konsisten dan on the same level kaya penyanyi² legend/pemyanyi dulu (mksdnya kan teknik nyanyinya bukan famenya) dan aku jarang liat sohyamg dibamdingi sama penyamyi2 skrng selalu penyamyi² lama (dan entah knpa aku liat dia nyamyi, gayanya tuh emamg kaya penyamyi lama), dan ya skrmg tuh aku lihat sohyang mungkin udah ngk terlalu ambis (yaampun bahasanya 😅) kaya eksperimen lagu, dll, mungkin karena umur, passion dan menjaga fisik juga jadinya ngk kaya dulu, bahkan kalau nyanyi lagunya itu² aja dan jarang nyanyi lagu yg baru tpi she is still amazing☺
    sbnrmyaa masih bnyk, cman takut.kepanjangan. maaf ya jadi curhat gini, tpi karena i genuinely love her as human being that dedicated herself.to.god.and people, not only a singer, jdinya suka kesel kalau ada yg downgrade /hina sohyang sebegitunya apalagi dia juga bukan penyanyi yg macem²😞😞

    Please do NOT "analyze" any more of Sohyang's music. After more than 20 years of singing in every conceivable environment and venue, many times while suffering from Pneumonia, she has given you some less than stellar moments you can be picky about. You have selected many situations that, for one reason or another, distort or do not record her voice accurately. Conversely, Sohyang has given millions of us a great deal of joy by singing to us from her heart. A very rare quality in vocalists that you have missed completely. Just move on and apply your clinical analysis to someone with more material to criticize than Sohyang has generously provided.
    Cheers.

      @@daveg.6820 Absolutely Dave. This "analysis" from this lady is pretty cold and calculating, and doesn't even attempt to understand why tens of millions of people around the world are her dedicated fans. Sohyang has that "it" factor, and that is her ability to communicate with her audience to the point that they are often left in tears from her performances. People like David Foster, Michael Bolton and Josh Groban go out of their way, and I mean seriously out of their way, to work with her when they are in Asia and South Korea. So why would people like David Foster do that? Because he loves her voice and her ability to connect with them on an emotional level!
      Here is what David Foster had to say about Sohyang in an interview with Naver on December 10, 2018, only a week after doing eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club.
      “I wanted to meet her very much, and I am happy to have collaborated in putting together a concert. Here is how I got to know about Sohyang. Oprah Winfrey introduced me to 'a stunningly amazing singer whose video is a must watch.' I fell in love at once with Sohyang's first video I watched on TH-cam, 'I Have Nothing.' It was thrilling, and I searched to listen to most of her other songs as well. I have wanted to meet her for a long time. She is one of the top divas I've come across."
      David Foster didn't hold back praises. "Her voice is very beautiful and overwhelming, and I found her every performance to be emotionally moving and amazing. Moving forward, I want to collaborate again!"
      In fact, it was Whitney Houston's own former manager who found Sohyang on TH-cam singing her 2015 performance of "I Have Nothing" and was so overwhelmed that he took it to Oprah Winfrey and Oprah took it to David Foster because it was so intensely excellent!
      So, I'll take David Foster's analysis over Kelly's any day. He knows what he is talking about and does not take snippets of performances from many years ago when she was still working on her technique. (And yes you did Ms. Kelly! At least one of those snippets was from way back in the 2000s!) Or from fan cams on cell phones that can't even properly capture the sound. As we both know Sohyang sings everywhere, and I mean in many less than optimal settings with poor equipment and even when she is sick with pneumonia, because she wants to lift people's spirits regardless of whether their church can afford the fanciest equipment or staging. Keep that in mind Ms. Kelly. And do you do that? If so, can we have your analysis of your own singing in churches with far less than optimal acoustics, microphones and amplification equipment, even when you are sick with pneumonia and still learning proper technique? 🤔🤨🙄

      @@ToddSauve Todd, Thanks. When I come across this sort of professional coldness, I have to speak up. I suspect that there is no singer on the planet that Ally will not eventually submit to this kind of sound engineering nonsense. In the final analysis, it smacks of meanness and jealousy. Who needs it? Certainly not music fans who can immediately recognize and delight in having stumbled onto greatness - the kind embodied in gentle Sohyang.
      Cheers, friend.

      @@daveg.6820 I couldn't agree more. This is so cold she ought to re-evaluate her career path. Because this isn't working on any level. She comes across as smug and condescending, even if she may like Sohyang and think she is one of the best out there. Even Seth Riggs is on record as saying Sohyang is the best he has worked with from Asia and can compete with anyone--including we vaunted North Americans and Europeans. And every major label has tried to sign Sohyang. How many have tried to sign Ms. Kelly?
