Flhvictory G I do agree, but Korea in general uses a lot of reverb and edit in their mics. Unbelievably head resonance is something like Whitney Houston, Lara Fabian, Barbra Streisand or Beyonce’s (who is also hard to judge due to her use of echos).
@@nokpophere170 Well, you have to understand that just because someone is using a full headvoice with complete vocal closure doesn't mean it is resonant. Yes, Sohyang does use more air proportion giving less vocal closure compare to opera singers, but it is also due to her high tessitura that her full vocal closure doesn't appear even in mid 6th octave which is very impressive. She also use her twang to maximize her resonance so that is why I said her headvoice was exceptional. I actually think some of the D6 had tension, especially @11:58. It sounded like it was supported but pushed with some tension. Definitely not strained though.
There's no perfect singers, guys. Angels maybe. But So Hyang is shockingly a human and for a human, she's very good. If you're a fan of SoHyang, you would know that her lows aren't really that great, her agility needs work. Other issues like pitch issues and those occasional "supported" only belts could be arguably attributed to her being very sickly. Of course, being sick can affect vocal performance but that's really out of SHs control. However, when she's not she will definitely be more on pitch and resonate those belts.
I learned a lot from your professional analysis. I appreciate. You clearly pointed out what I was feeling vaguely. I agree with a lot of your opinion. You can find the comments and your content here, most of her weaknesses are related to her health, and I would appreciate if if you could analyze the recent her performances from the second half of 2020 to 2021, when she recovered her health. From what I can tell, her vocal skills have definitely improved. And, I think the reason why her head voice was relatively less developed was that her singer career started with Gospel, and she focused on the lyrics that were clearly conveyed. It's probably because the mixed voice is more powerful and easier to convey lyrics clearly to audience. Of course, from her qualities, I believe that the head voice will develop as much as an excellent classical vocalist. If she wants to.
i think she could really have been a virtuoso classical singer if she had gone that route from the beginning, but it would take her changing how she sings...
I love your channel and this vid but, I just want to say that her C#6 that she hit in dream and yes she did hit it and I know people think it’s a sharp C6 and I watched the clip stating that and of course it was tampered with bc when I went to slow it down on the actual video she CLEARLY hit a resonant C#6 in mixed voice. Also the D6 in Dream is still resonant even though she had a slightly higher larynx, it was definitely not strained... lastly I feel like her agility is underrated as well and I do not agree with the 6/10 score. I might have to have a debate about the Eb6 and E6 being “strained” as well...
Love the clips of her flaws u found. Its not easy since she had so many perfect moment. U are the first one to point out the tension on her upper belt and 6th octave head notes. U are so brave cuz u will be punished by tons of Sohyang's followers
@@bluerose1764 Mariah literally just sings. She doesn't use some secret 'support' technique. It's quite obvious. She's a wonderful vocalist but not what I'd call a staple of a great vocal technique. What makes her great isn't her technique but her vocal choices. So Hyang is a technical singer on the other hand. But I would still say there are hundreds of singers with a way better technique overall and less vocal issues.
You probably just don't really know many vocalists out there. I can assure you that there're tons of vocalists with technique much better than Mariah. Literally agree with Kaji comment above, Mariah was never really trained, she just used her voice at its best which leaded to confusion that her technique is/was perfect. It wasn't, it's just her legacy which made people think that way
An excellent video, a very good work that shows the strengths and also the weaknesses of our Queen Sohyang ! I think that your video tries to be as objective as possible, so thank you for that. Knowing that she has pneumonia and greats vocal skills, it proves that she's one of the best, furthermore she's very humble and that's why I love her and that she's one of my favorite singers ! She's a model for vocal technique !
some things i wanna clarify, tense notes can be supported, when she was playing around with the E6, it was supported ( I think so ) and the C#6 was supported.
Right now her consistent supported range is F#3/G3-B5/C6-D6 (cause she didn't show any Eb6 ,E6 ... in HV, and just 2 C#6 in mixed voice ) during her prime it was G#3-C6-Eb6
This is one of the most thorough analyses ever made of her and I agree with almost everything. People are so used to claims such as "She resonates C#6 and F6" that they don't actually take the time to research support and see if it still applies, they just believe whatever they see in the comments. We need real, unbiased videos like this one, so thank you so much.
I just don't buy the whole ”support and strain” thing no matter who said it. It has become something people use frequently based on what they see (for example SoHyang supporting C#6 whatever). Of course the one who said it would say he is correct. To me, I just hear what's good to my ear. Her mixed C#6? Too shouty and more like a scream for me. Her head voice? Sounds really beautiful to me if she does not go too high which sounds strident. Her lows? I can hear how airy they are but I love their warmth. That's how I would put this. At this day and age "vocal rating" has become something that speaks to fans more than an "objective" analysis. Fans have some mutual ideas of what is "supposed to be" good and I doubt a lot of them know what they are saying. Yes I am being subjective but this is much less of a burden to become "technical listeners that have knowledge".

@@bluerose1764 sorry lol There is non upper register lol, there's chest, mix, head, falsetto, fry, and whistle register. When you are rating low notes, you can call them as a chest register. That's not stylistic breathiness. It's a lack of chest development. That whole bit at 1:48 shows exactly what I mean. She never has the ring, and her upper mix suffers from a very high larynx. I didn't hear a crescendo there on that Eb5. It's not a stylistically low larynx. Again, it's her trying to get an embodied chest sound but lacking real development to. @@uiteren2845 I've yet to hear a single note below G2 that was done with an actual neutral larynx lol. From anyone. And that includes low basses. You have to realise that larynx position has literally nothing to do with freedom or lack of it. In fact pushing the larynx to be neutral on those pitches (high notes too) will usually attract more tension as it's not the natural function of the voice. So lol to that.
Why does people are so so obsessed with this "supported" or "ring" things when in fact you don't exactly need to belt every effin word? I love hearing singers who can reach stratospheric notes but music is more than those high notes. It's the lyrical and musical interpretation done with conviction and authenticity are what's more important as an artist. There are many singers that have limited vocal range but this fact does not stop them from creating a performance that has a long-lasting effect. Be intentional and be authentic. That's all that matters.
I don't know what kind of credentials you got to have this type of opinion on her, but you certainly went out of your way to scrutinize every possible bad notes of an artist who mostly sings for churches, benefit concerts and charity events. She does not sing for your analysis or anybody else. Nor does she sing to show you her vocal skills. She did that only in two competitions. Lot of your sample notes of her here were sung while she is ill, too. This kind of analysis is better suited for opera singers or other flamboyant pop singers who does tons of concerts. Leave her be ! Her fans love her for what she represents not just her vocal skills.
Don't understand why so many hateful comments towards you, in my opinion, you made a great job considering not only her strengths but also her weak sides. Your analysis was done very thoroughly and without any mistakes, Sohyang is one the best vocalists out there but she's a human and has her flaws which aren't even that big so there's no need to make any wars in the comment section

Korea's leading vocalist and world's best singer. Sohyang is a living legend.

She is a star, her technique is superior even to Mariah's
Mariah was never a technical singer.
@@KajiVocals why?
It wasn't, it's just her legacy which made people think that way
I recommend watching the CVSS videos on my channel, I scored Sohyang and Mariah and Sohyang won by three points tho my bias goes to Mariah lol
I think in 2022 she is improved much

Right now her consistent supported range is F#3/G3-B5/C6-D6 (cause she didn't show any Eb6 ,E6 ... in HV, and just 2 C#6 in mixed voice ) during her prime it was G#3-C6-Eb6
Thank you so much for your precious contributions! Keep doing your great job!!!

It's more than occasional nasality.

@@littlelamb8048 Generally above G5, but I think that's true for everyone. Not just her. Sohyang has shown more of an ability to control her larynx position in the 5th octave than most, so I'll give her credit for that.
