  • Watch as Cam and Jake mess stuff up and have fun along the way as they attempt to remove the valve cover from the 2.0T TSI engine. Should be easy, right? And should not require a $675 trip to the real mechanics afterwards, too.

    for any other viewers about to attempt this,
    to detach the pcv, you don’t need to take it out at the squeeze clamp in the back. The hose is just a big plug/o-ring into the back of the pcv. it’s hard to tell that it even disconnects at that point but if you give a few wiggles, it’s visible.

    Sweet. One of the things i want to do to make my engine bay look cooler is to paint the valve cover a bright red (my GTI is tornado red) and install the anodized black catch can conversion, black coil packs and red coil wire cover.

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic

      That would be awesome! I was about to do that on my old Audi and I may do it here. Not sure what color yet 🤔

      @@TheParkingLotMechanic well the car is white so you can kinda pick any color scheme you want and run with it. Not sure how funky your taste is but i say plum crazy purple is an awesome color.

    About to do this job on my mk6 gti, do you need to remove the spark plugs before? Thanks for the video

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No need to remove the spark plugs! But be sure to reseat the vacuum pump properly when reinstalling! I didn't seat the bearing in the groves and broke the pump. It's fixed now but want to make sure no one repeats my mistake!

    At 2:05 you said there would be "better videos you could watch" and yet I can't find them. I was just quoted 2K for a cylinder valve cover reseal on my MK7(2017) GTI. Any advice in doing it myself?

      Technically you have to detension the chain but they say cams on time ( hence crank in TDC) is good enough as long as you do not mess with cams. I am sure there is a thread or 2 on Golfmk7 forums.

    Based on your what your valve cover looked like I would also replace the oil cap. I had some similar looking residue coming from around the oil filler cap and it hasn’t come back once I replaced it. I should probably re-seal my cam cover also but it’s not leaking enough currently for me to want to mess with it lol.

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good call! Was probably gonna replace it soon but want to get the fancy ones for all the other caps too so that’ll be a bit of money. May buy a cheap one in the mean time.

    Did you guys have to lock the timing chain so it wouldn't move??

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had a mechanic friend say we didn’t have to, it’ll be fine without locking. But I know many people say you should/need to but from our experience, it isn’t necessary. I would call it a risk not to but we pulled it off.

    Hey did u have to buy a special tool to hold the cams in place ?

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s recommended to ensure nothing happens but I didn’t use one and it’s been fine. But I’m not a professional so please don’t take that as gospel :p

    It kinda felt like the most imporant part was jumped over: getting both surfaces clean with no gouges, and which sealer was used.
    Large jump from starting to put protective shop towels down to "here's the cover partially back on" ?

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Something I learned about myself and have had to fix (with voice over and just plain being better) is forgetting to film when I am focused on an important task. Sometimes I get so worried about making sure I do something that I forget what else I'm doing in the process!

      @@TheParkingLotMechanic It's all good, I didn't want to feel like I was being unfair but it *was* the main reason I came here, to see if the rear end of the cam was captured in a bearing or vacuum pump or something, I couldn't remember from having done it before long ago!
      Either way your video is still just about the only one on the subject, and it was a good reminder! 👍

      @@TheParkingLotMechanic Might have been good to at least acknowledge the oversight in a voiceover or on-screen text. I watched that part at least twice trying to figure out if I just missed the interesting part!
      It's all good though, I was only watching this to make sure that I'm not crazy and my Mk5 does not in fact have the TSI engine. (The mechanic that's working on it right now is a little confused about it... definitely just quoted me TSI parts for my FSI car.)

    Did you add 2 dabs of silicoln gasket maker on the timing cover - 2 areas where engine block seems connect. Otherwise it will leak oil if you didnt.

    Do you have to re time the engine after the reselling ?

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic

      I did not. A lot say you should be careful and mark your timing chain to make sure it doesn't jump/skip but my mechanic friend who loves VW said it really isn't anything to worry about. You could always lay down some marks to make sure but I didn't.
