Dana Barros: AHEAD OF HIS TIME! The OVERLOOKED Career of a Modern Day NBA Precursor | FPP

- When you think about some of the best volume three point shooters of all time, the usual names that come to mind are guys like Stephen Curry and James Harden or earlier deadeyes like Ray Allen and Reggie Miller. But throughout the 90s there was a player who stood under 6 feet and was one of the best and most efficient shooters of the decade. Dana Barros truly was a human dynamo with elite athleticism; and while he could use this whenever he wanted to slice through the defense, his shot of choice came from beyond the arc as a career 41% three point shooter. He was a Boston College standout before joining the Seattle Supersonics at the same time as Shawn Kemp; yet would spend the majority of his time in Seattle backing up Gary Payton, but it was his two years in Philadelphia in the mid 90s where Barros showed how dangerous he could be, bringing a play style to the NBA, that was unheard of and unappreciated at the time, but would become the basis for the modern day game. Unfortunately, after an incredible 1995 season which saw him named an NBA All Star and the Most Improved Player, he would sign with the Boston Celtics who would turn over a new leaf with Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker during Barros’ time there, and in turn Dana Barros would quickly see his role decrease, before spending a couple years with Detroit then making a brief return to Boston. Dana Barros is unfortunately overlooked today, but he is one of the most underrated shooters of all time, and would have thrived had he not been about 20 years early to the NBA.

Dana Barros and Chris Jackson aka Mahmoud Abdul Rauf were some of the first small PGs shooting a lot of 3s in the 90s, Barros was a bucket, had a 3 point shot and he had bounce too, can we get that Joe Johnson, Bill Laimbeer, Mo Cheeks and Ricky Pierce vids!
Because They Had Just Instituted The 3-Pointer In College And High School At The Time. Mahmoud 's Freshman Year (88) The 3 Was New. If He Had The 3-Point Line During His Entire Career While Growing Up In Gulfport, MS He Would Have Probably Set A National Record In Scoring. Tracy Murray Washington The Same Way. Hell, Tracy Averaged 44.1 As A Senior With The Addition Of The Line.
@@55cleon I know bruh, I saw Chris Jackson at LSU as a kid he could've legitimately averaged damn near 40 points a game in college and had a green light to shoot em like Steph Curry, HE WAS A BUCKET 🪣 you're not telling me nothing I don't already know
Facts 💯
@@55cleonI loved watching all those players growing up.
@@AMart870Being born and raised and growing up in New Orleans I watched everything LSU. I saw Chris Jackson, Shaq, Stanley Roberts and many other LSU Tigers there.
When I was in 3rd grade Dana Barros came to my elementary school and gave an inspirational speech about his life and playing in the NBA, it was pretty rad
This guy had a burner. He deserves more shine.
Watched Barros at BC. He single handedly kept that that team somewhat competitive. They were terrible in the late 80's as they are now - but he kept games close in an era when the Big East was a power.
He had the ball half the game and was a real star
Tecmo NBA Basketball for NES was my intro to him in grade school. I barely knew anything about basketball other than the Bulls. But Barros was one of the best 3pt shooters in the game so he stood out.
Tecmo sports, EA before EA...
You gotta be 40 or older...
Good times tho.
I'm 42 and I had that game lol
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Eddie Johnson on the Sonics, was my favorite player. I scored 200 points with him, playing the 15 minute quarters! I shot with Eddie Johnson EVERY time!
Still got my Barros Skybox card. Dino Radja on that team too was fun.
Crazy thing was i saw a guy in the sixers jersey a few days back at #3 and it wasn't iverson... was gna look him up but never had a chance
Thanks alot for this video
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American, male, and 5'10", so I can relate with Dana Barros! I used to try shooting Dana Barros 3-Pointers. In 1992-93, Houston at Seattle, Game 7, the Sonics were down, but Dana Barros came in and hit a couple of pull-up jumpers, and held his arms up!
He was one of my favorite players as a kid. I was always the shortest kid on our team and he gave me inspiration. I collected every card of his that I could get.
That’s kind of crazy how the last guy who wore #3 before Iverson, was basically like a poor man’s Iverson 😂 (meaning he was still really good)
I mean iverson couldn't shoot like barros
@@johndavis9321at all
@@johndavis9321 True, but Barros wasn't the all-world talent A.I. was.
Naw Dana was more Micheal Adams than AI ! Micheal was 5'10 and could shoot the lights out
@@Riles3152but they don’t play the same
Great video. Being a big Sonics fan, I have nothing but good memories of Barros. Sure would have been fun to see him play in todays era. Thanks for the memories Dana!
That efficiency just incredible and they didn't let him cook. sometimes 90s basketball doesn't make sense
It was a more rigid time althout their were certain coaches who would experiment with certain basketball philosophies that are popular today for the most part the game was predicated around post ups, back to the basket play and getting the ball to the big man
Facts
Right most teams operated in a toxic hierarchy, where front offices/coaches had majority control/influence on the team's play style to the team's dress code and overall rules and regulations.... Players today have no clue of not only the money, but the liberty and freedom they have as far as contractual as obligations
I used to have his basketball card.
You continue to do great work . The way you honor these players is well done. Keep up the solid work!!
Please do one on
Jeff Hornacek
Mike miller
Cedric ceballos
Dell curry
God Shammgod
Lisa Leslie
This guy was unstoppable in video games lile NBA Live back then too
Fun to watch, even more fun on LIVE back in the day
I loved guards like this back in the '90s. The Arkansas Razorbacks had a dude named Al Dillard who didn't make it to the League but had a futuristic 40-foot range jumper-type game, used to pull up from the snout on the Razorback halfcourt logo. These kinds of guys would've killed it in this era.
Beantown Finest!!
Like Flutie!
My wife gave me an Iverson (my favorite player) rookie jersey for my birthday recently, I actually thought of Dana Barros when I looking at it.
Happy he is in 2k finally. Some others to cover Dan Issel , Matt Harpring, and Mike Miller
Isaiah Thomas before Isaiah Thomas ((Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, Fogget Celtics))
Dan sure had a game.
This just goes to show that if you're an above average shooter with a good field goal percentage, there's always a spot for you on a roster. Even though there may be a log jam of players at your position. Same with being an above average defender. Especially if you can defend multiple positions.
Love videos like this! Never heard of this guy till today. Thank you 🙏🏾
Hoping to see that highlight of him catching a jumpshot like a lob to hit a game winning buzzer beater
Thank you 😊
Can you do rick mahorn please?
Ok now I’m sure of it you are just going through the NBA 2k historic draft classes 😭
Probably we need an old head who saw games as they happened to do these. But this is good content. I appreciate these lesser known guys getting looked out. These forgotten players in NBA history were typically the best or second best athlete in 3 sports at their high school. And a top 3 athlete in their state the year they graduated
Or that clip he opened the video with was his inspiration for this video
he going through all time 2k rosters atp next video we finna see gonna be about Charlie Scott, Isaiah rider, or Robert Pack maybe JUST MAYBE Byron Scott
I’m tellin u my guy. When u bring up the college careers. If they’re playing against team with certain notable players. Or even players you’ve talked about before. Tell us who they are. Even direct us to ur older videos. Ur fans will appreciate it. I know I would.
Can you guys do one on eric snow next please and thank you
I miss the days where players had different styles. Now they’re all just cookie cutters
Facts it's a big thing that is missin from the game so many dudes play the same way
Should have gotten more minutes but Karl prefer Nate Mcmillan 😮
the last Sixer to wear number 3 befofe Iverson
Facts
Darius Miles look like he 60 smh
If you haven't already you gotta do Elton Brand
A smaller version of Dame Dolla!
In today’s NBA no doubt in my mind that wouldn’t average 30
Michael Adams
As you all know, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. 5'10". I want to ask from the outset: I there a Dana Barros DUNK in this video? And, can anybody direct me to a video of a Dana Barros dunk? Remember, I was a STIFF, who didn't have Cable TV until I got to college, so I was limited to NBC games, and Sonics road games. I heard that Barros was a great leaper, but I've never seen him dunk.

Plays like Trae Young
Boston Great
I have a great memory.... But I forgot him.......
Steph b4 steph
hey man, what was it 21 million over 6 years or 9 million for 3. Get that bag!
Terrible signing by the Celtics. From a contract standpoint
Still can’t understand why you haven’t done a video on Andrei Kirilenko yet
