The coolest unheralded feature of the obviously highly featured radio is that the playback from SD card (TF) can be random! (shuffle play) every OTHER damn radio I tried with an SD slot lacks this VITAL feature! I am buying one to use at work. I will mainly be listening to local FM or Mp3s BUT, I get AM(MW)/SW/VHF/UHF and a "Bluetooth speaker" thrown in?!? Hell yeah. It won't replace my Tecsun PL-880 for "serious" SWL, But this is a radio I would have designed (If I COULD design radios, LOL)
This looks like the perfect camping radio. Sounds like it has great "ears", a great selection of available bands, and the backlit buttons are fantastic. Just ordered today, and very thankful for your review.
I like my PL-330 too but the too soft, too imprecise tuning wheel is irritating. Also it lacks a separate BFO wheel which would make SSB tuning easier. OTOH it's a compact, very sensitive radio packed with useful features. The best bargain for a cheap SSB-capable SW radio IMHO. Yes, backlit buttons would be nice too...
I live in an apartment on the 10th floor (not on the 99th of my block, Sorry Mick, LOL) and am stuck with yeeting a long wire out of my window, NOT the BEST SWL setup, But it works.. I have had no one question why there is a 75 foot (22.86 meters) random wire coming down from my window, Ahh SWL in the "big city". I live in Pittsburgh, PA USA. And our police, fire and EMS are ALL in UHF-FM, analog and unencrypted. This radio can be used to monitor those! In Pennsylvania (And indeed most of the US,) it is LEGAL to listen to ANY unencrypted radio signal except cordless/cellular telephone calls.
Hi. Not sure on your building wire. Maybe some kind of earth lead ?. As for listening i cannot say as in the UK its all encrypted. I am sure the state laws can be checked if you search online.
to be honest SSB sounds terrible on DSP radios, you really have to get the Tecsun PL-660/680 to appreciate how amazing SSB sounds and how using ECSS is a pure joy on those radios compared to crap sounding SSB on DSP radios.
Hi FRED just to confirm that I did watch this earlier and I was very impressed with this radio, just had to run out before leaving a message. Thanks again for all your work mate, and there still no skip as you well know. BUT it's going to happen one day soon, take care of yourself and yours Alan 73s 💯👍
One issue with the tuning knob is that it's easy to turn by accident when using the buttons. II suppose that's why there is a separate lock function just for that knob.
Hi, Fred. Another great video. I liked this radio so much, I bought one, but the display was missing segments. I returned it. The replacement's display also was bad, but different segments were missing. The radio performed flawlessly, otherwise.
Good when your eye sight going when get older with the big text on manual hehe. Has a bit of a retro radio cassette look, imagine tape deck on front and tuner at top.
Thanks Fred for the review, but the fact that it’s only AM only without SSB makes it a nice to have but not my go to radio. I will just keep my RF919 and ZhiWhiz A320. 73! Have a great day!
Nice little radio! Sometimes I wonder, there are so many different brands comming from China, and there are almost equally similarities between them. Like for instance a flashlight, the grill for the speakers... etc. Could they be all from the same factory? Different production lines obviously. Even my Malahit DSP2 has some resemblances with this radio...
You said you are in the London region? Too bad it didn’t stop at 648kHz. This is the Radio Caroline frequency and it should have picked it up. Please hand tune the station(s) to see if it receives 648kHz. Caroline is now the most listned to station on MW in the UK within its target area. Hand tuning, preferably during daylight hours would make your reviews so much more valuable. Specially for the MW enthusiasts that might be interested in products if it is capable of making a difference. Regards, Willem, Holland.
I love a radio with SSB but sadly all the DSP radios sound really horrible on SSB. Using USB/LSB on a SW station works great to reduce the effects of fading signals and it's also excellent for the DX'er who wants to weed out a weak signal close to a stronger station, it gives you that selectivity no DSP radio can provide with filters alone. For anyone who doesn't know, this practice of using SSB on commercial AM stations is called ECSS, one of the best portables you will find for this is the Analogue Tecsun PL-660 and the PL-680, the 680 having better audio from the speaker and better LW/MW performance. But their SSB audio is just Amazing and you can still buy the PL-660 and 680 new today and the 660 and 680 have a real SYNC detector which kind of does the same as ECSS. The 660 SYNC is a little bit better but ECSS still performs better and once used to tuning the BFO on a commercial station you'll never want to use a DSP radio again !
@@kwdavids1 I have the PL-330 and I only kept it because it has SSB in such a tiny package and ETM actually works well at scanning stations. Thanks for testing the radio. I still have a few questions on this radio: - It would have been interesting to see how the squelch works on the Air Band, but you turned it off in the demo - which is unpractical , because nobody wants to listen to white noise. The other Bluetooth based new Raddy radios have an annoying Air Band squelch noise tail, which I was interested if this radio does it too. Does its squelch really mute instantly after the signal? - it would be interesting if you can place the radio somewhere at a spot with a good receiption (low noise level) and listen to its receiving audio via your smartphones headphones if the radio can stream its audio via Bluetooth? That would be a very nice and practical feature. Is that possible of is the BT only for controll and audio input, that would be a no go for me? - what happens on shortwave if you enter a frequency that is not within the 5 KHz raster? Can you only not go in between the channels with the scroll wheel or also via manual input, which isn't very practical but might be helpful in some situations I also agree that SSB and RDS would have been a feature that could probably be implemented without in todays DSP age, but they didn't - a missed opportunity
As for the squelch on air band you wont need it switched on for a freq or mem scan as the radio mutes anyway. If you tune to a certain freq you can use it but you have to be aware of the slow AGC control on this radio as it causes a slight delay. The squelch prob wont help.

I'd buy it if it had SSB! So not buying it. In the western states the only thing you can get in SW is hams on SSB. Can't hear much SW broadcast. Too far away from anything even with a good outdoor antenna. I envy those in the UK and Europe where tuning across SW broadcast bands is like tuning MW or FM. Stations everywhere.
Hi. I never realised you could not get much broadcast SW.
Who on earth is that Greg guy. He posts the same silly comments on all the radio uploads . Weird .
He's the new "Hi Guys". If you have been around long enough to rem him :-)
Does it vover 27Mhz CB??? SSB
No there is no SSB
How about ham band 2 meter band
It does the 140's MHz but i thinks its just NFM.
Are they saying the ENGLISH are almost visually impaired???
Comes with age :-(
I think they are saying the English complain about everything. Squeaky wheel thing.
@@CB-RADIO-UK age catching me TOMORROW 65TH birthday AARP almost done hunting me!!
Airband is less than useful as many airports around UK and europe are using 8.33KHz chan. spacing now.
Go back in time 20 years or so this product might have sold well. Not at all popular in this day and age (I don't know how anyone can talk up a cheap radio as well as you can)
No SSB? Mehhhhh
On SW, I can enter steps smaller than 5kHz. E.g. by clicking EN. - 7033 - EN. to get to 7.033 MHz.
