It's a Scam - O2 40% discount scam - Don't give them the number!

  • This scam is fraud - the scammer is trying to get an authorization code - this would give them access to the O2 account. DON'T GIVE THEM THE CODE!
They send a text from the O2 website to your phone - the aim is to change your password and access your account.
O2 know about this - I called them directly afterwards.

Hi Richard. Thank you for showing us all this - very useful info. You should start a series called "Vobes Goes Rantzen!" (For non-aincient or overseas viewers, Ester Rantzen was a BBC tv consumer champion back in the 1970s and, I believe, remains active in child-protection matters).

Thank you. I was just offered a 30% discount on my monthly bill, as a loyal O2 customer. I said thanks and would look forward to receiving my next, reduced, bill - but it seemed they wanted to send me a code. At this point I decided to decline their generous offer. Your post convinced me that I hadn't missed out on a good deal. Thanks

I work for O2 at one of their legitimate call centers, and I've had to unfortunately tell so many people who've fallen for this as a scam.
It's always heartwenching as it's often older customers who fall for them.
I work for inbound so I am unsure on outbound's operations, however some things to note, I would be surprised if we offer immediate discounts like as said, like in this case they open up with a "40% discount". I would be surprised if that was a real case in a true outbound upgrade call, as we do have rules we have to follow in regards to upgrades, one key one being "Never give discounts on the first offer", and this is true for all Pay Monthly departments.
All Promo and Discount codes are input on the agents end, the only items you should receive over SMS and e-mail are in a genuine call your CI/CS (Contract Information and Contract Summary) as well on completion of a Refresh upgrade or AddCon your CCA/Checkout link.
If an "agent" for O2 asks for you to take a code - it is very very likely a scam.
If you are not eligible for an upgrade i.e. you have a fair amount left for your device settlement - it is **incredibly** unlikely will waive it. As that requires permission from multiple managers, and can only be done in very very very specific cases (I've worked there for a while and have never seen it done myself, that's how rare it is).
Another step you can check is to ask the scammer for info from your account - for example ask them "Hey what was my last bill amount?" a real agent has access to this, a scammer (when they call and before you give them a code) will not.
Unless it's a case of a Standard plan upgrade (which is really uncommon - we only do this directly in the case of customers who don't have access to their number - such as lost and stolen devices); we only charge an upfront fee for an upgrade if you have a device to pay off already, or you specifically ask to pay an upfront to decrease your device plan.
I've had a lot of people call in saying you've had an upgrade and recieved the wrong device - unless an agent is really really out of it, there should be little to no chance of this happening in a genuine call center and you may have been scammed. Please make sure your passwords have not been changed and contact 202 immediately!
I hope these tips can help prevent someone from getting scammed - please stay safe! Remember no genuine O2 call center will ask you for an access code!

Now cold callers are not allowed to hide their numbers, it is interesting to note them down and check them on Google. They usually look like legit UK 03 or 01 numbers, but in fact the numbers link back to a city in India. So those heavy Indian accents are authentic. Try it and see!
Thank you for also explaining the background to the calls.

I had one of these the other day, the number was coming up from London,i was at work at the time, but when i tried to ring it back, it went dead, nothing there, no ring tone nothing. They rang later, and answered it, as soon as they say Hello Mam, i new it was a scammet, i let them use their selling tactics, then asked them to tell me my customer password, obviously i new they didnt know this, because i dont have one, im not with 02. I love watching these videos, so educational.

You can’t trust anyone these days! A meter reader called at my elderly mums house (she lives alone) and refused to let him in! I applauded her good sense - as it’s easy to show fake ID - and you can buy any uniform from a fancy dress shop, or ebay!
So how is a 94yr old expected to recognise genuine from fake???

Hello from Ohio. We let our answer machine screen our calls. Some leave messages. LOL. Amazon calls about not being able to deliver our package without some information. Only thing is we, being 73 years old, never ordered anything from Amazon. Another one is about 549.00 charger to our VISA card for an Iphone. We have no VISA card. Another was about a subscription being canceled and they owe us a refund. If they have our info they should send the refund without us calling back. I cannot believe how anyone falls for these scams.

The claim that these callers think they are working for a genuine company is in tatters because the only way to send these 2 texts from O2 is to click on forgot password so the staff know what they're doing. There have been instances the call centre workers thought they were actually working for a genuine company and turned out the employer was actually running a big scam on mass scale but this clearly shows otherwise.

Before they'd even got to the point where they would ask for anything I received the one-time code text from O2, which was plastered with warnings like "If someone is calling you and asking for a code, end the call because they do NOT work for O2". At that point I hung up on them.

Subsequent calls, I gave a made up 6 digit code. He entered it and it was refused, he then asked if I had given him the right code, I said "no I made it up, and would'nt give a scammet from India any code" , he persisted but I just hung up, i then got another call, I think they know I'm not going to allow them any access.

If you receive a call from an Indian guy sounding increasingly frustrated (you can tell by the tone of his voice) hang up!

I just got one these calls from an Indian women and she pulled this on me, claiming to give me a discount I only noticed something was off as for one I got a text from 02 mid conversion on telling me the code and not to share it on call to anyone, 2 I checked the phone number calling and the O2 official phone number both weren't matching, I just stop talking and let them hung up.

I am deaf and wear hearing aids could you please repeat that a bit slower ,I didn’t catch that, you are calling about what numbers .why? ,I don’t understand could you repeat that please oh darn the battery is gone dead hold on a minute while I replace it ,sorry about that ,I hear so much better with my right ear even though I am left handed I don’t like holding the phone with my left hand I will be back shortly I am sure to have some new batteries in my purse.... ..........sorry to have taken so long I didn’t have them in my purse I had to swap the left hearing aid battery and put it in the right hearing aid such a bother I must warn you that I normally change the batteries at the same time so this one might not last to long, young fella what was it you needed. Something about numbers if I remember correctly I love numbers especially 518 it makes me think about all the people in my life who have loved me and the people whom I have loved. Could you repeat that I would never have swapped my old lady phone with you for a new one, well I thought that was what you said, I did wonder how you knew I had an old ladies phone they aren’t the most up to date. Could you speak a little louder and slower I have trouble with accents too yours is an interesting one it reminds me of my late husband I had trouble understanding him too .perhaps if you spell out the words I will write them down that worked with Jorge you would never believe how he pronounced his name ,it doesn’t sound like George like you would think that’s why I spelled it out as it can sound a bit rude! I keep a pen handy and paper too so go ahead and spell out what you want . I am trying to understand did you say wtf I have no clue what word you are trying to spell. 👍Thank you Richard. for your time on the phone with the clueless guy. I think I could have written more but it is late and enough of my long winded comment 😘💕💞🙋🏼‍♀️💐👍👍👍👍👍🖖🖖🖖🖖😇

How does one know they are not your correct network provider? They are often Indian people on the phone and they ask the same questions except the frauds ask you for your security number. You never need to speak this number. When you are buying you type this number in not speak it where people can overhear you.

When will the public STOP purchasing tarrifs from Companies that have overseas Support? These accents tell you the Company cannot be trusted and only after profit? Stick with UK only Support?
