CE-2w sounds much better than I expect every time I hear it. Boss deserves a lot of credit for making something affordable, and sounding really good with huge shoes to fill.
Looking back through your archive of vids and finding this, I haven't seen/heard a better side-by-side comparison of these two iterations from Boss. 4 years later, and the CE-2w seems to still live at or near the top!
I appreciate the effort put into this demo, but it should have been made more clear that Matt is employed by Boss and also, the CE-2w is benefiting from the 'always-on' preamp of the CE-1 since you aren't using a switcher here; so it receives the nice impedance treble roll off from the input gain pot of the CE-1, which forms a large part of its sound. Just a bit dishonest to not point that out or use a switcher. I have owned both pedals and they are both great, but there is a distinct difference that is somewhat masked / obscured in this video.
@@TheShadowvaultAwaits Didn't own both at the same time. 'Close enough' is subjective, but I don't think I could tell the difference in a mix, possibly could tell outside of a mix.
This is the video that sold me on the CE-2w. I *think* part of what’s going on here is that they’re running the CE-2w after the CE-1, so they’re kindof cheating to copy the EQ, because that’s one obvious difference between mine and the CE-1 clone I compared it to. Don’t know if that was on purpose or coincidence, not really a complaint, but I think that’s why this comparison sounds bette than others I’ve heard. Still, I’m pretty happy with my CE-2w, and I’m a chorus snob. Small, versatile, quiet...Boss did a great job on this one!
Haha! Yeah, they sound very similar. There's a slight difference though. The CE-2w is a tiny bit louder and brighter, but it's a minimal difference, and in my book that difference is also for the better actually. The CE-2w is a killer chorus pedal on all fronts.
Krish Patel I have a DM2w that’s inspected in Japan. I think the earlier ones were made in Taiwan, but someone told me they shifted production to Japan later on.
is the intensity on the ce-1 like a wetd/dry mix control? that would be a nice addition to the ce2w or other chorus pedals. I miss something like this on my ehx small clone.
Chorus = Boss. Last year searching for the perfect, lush, 80's sounding chorus pedal. Ended with boss CE2-W. The CE-2 mode is great for overdriven sound, because it's less modulated. CE-1 is great, and very lush! Soo cool! Hint: Stefan try the MD-500 Dimensions mode. Digital chorus but it's crazy!!!
I think the ce2w I definitely the best overall chorus on the market for sure. Nobody has ever outdone roland/boss for lushness. That said, the new evh chorus by mxr is insanely good and I go back and forth between which I like better for personal taste. The mxr definitely sounds better with overdrive and also has a setting that isn't really chorusey, but gives your tone a stereo effect from a mono amp. That sounds massive with high gain. But for cleans, boss is king.
Kudos if you can hear a massive difference. I honestly can't. Sure, there's a tiny difference, but it's negligible. Nothing you would actually be able to hear in a mix. Both are amazing pedals. They really did a good job on the CE-2w. But of course I wouldn't mind owning a CE-1. It's a super rad legendary pedal 😊
ThePedalZone To me it would make a difference in the mix. I’m a mix engineer professionally and the increased depth of the original is tangible. The sound of the preamp gives girth that the new pedal simply doesn’t possess. The modulation has so much more character in the original. It’s a noticeable sound versus a subtle one. I recognize my ears aren’t the norm but in a mix the accumulation of using the right tool spread across a bunch of tracks adds up.
@@skythemusic - I don't disagree with you, and as an engineer your ears are way more finely tuned than mine. I definitely agree with you on the pre-amp in the CE-1. That is a magical part of it, and will add presence and girth as you say. I was very impressed with the CE-2w though, I have to say. It got very close. Both are great chorus pedals and I'd rock either of them any day of the week. Thanks for chiming in with your insight and knowledge :)
Cool! And killer t-shirt as well!
Representing my Scandinavian brother 4 EVAH! ❤️
CE-2w sounds much better than I expect every time I hear it. Boss deserves a lot of credit for making something affordable, and sounding really good with huge shoes to fill.
I was really impressed as well. Super awesome chorus pedal that truly captures the spirit of its legendary big brother ☺
I love my Waza CE-2. That was perfectly said about there not being a bad sound in the pedal. Awesome demo my doods
Thank you very much! Yeah, Boss definitely made something special with that one ☺

Great video! So, set the Rate control at 3 o’clock on the CE-2W to match the original CE-1? Sounds really close.
Really cool! Can't wait for the Space echo demo though 😍
Thanks, bud! Yeah, the Space Echo is gonna be fun. It was such a rad experience getting to play that one 😊
ThePedalZone CE-1>Space Echo=HELL YEAH!

Hey man. Since you own both how close is the ce2w with preamp in the signal chain to the original?
@@TheShadowvaultAwaits Didn't own both at the same time. 'Close enough' is subjective, but I don't think I could tell the difference in a mix, possibly could tell outside of a mix.
Chorus is love. Chorus is life. Chorus is GOAT
No truer words were ever spoken!
I see that Space Echo chilling out behind you guys....
Yeah. We even did a video on it ☺
Great review what guitar is that please?
Cool.....VERY VERY COOL!
Thanks, man! Happy you liked it 😊

CE-1 is King. I have one in the box too, I bought in the 90s.
I’m super jealous 😊
Just watched your Tremolo/Reverb video - it was great! :)
Thanks, man! That really means a lot to me ❤️🙏
Roland JC120 in a "small" box. Thanks Stefan!
Exactly! Boss got the chorus game down! ☺
Causalty dilema : which came first, JC120 or CE1 ? 🐣🙂
The JC120 came first
thats all I want to read! I just order one!
Original Boss CE-1 ALL THE WAY !!
It's really great. I like them both though. Would be more than happy to rock the CE-2w
Stefan when you play with chorus pedals it’s great
Thanks, man! I adore chorus, and these ones are awesome ☺
I just laughed when you said "Which one I'm hearing right now ?" because the CE 2 emulation of CE 1 is so similar to the original one.
Haha! Yeah, they sound very similar. There's a slight difference though. The CE-2w is a tiny bit louder and brighter, but it's a minimal difference, and in my book that difference is also for the better actually. The CE-2w is a killer chorus pedal on all fronts.
Am I correct in thinking the ce2w isn't made in Japan like they've said in this video. Mine says inspected in Japan, not made in
Krish Patel I have a DM2w that’s inspected in Japan. I think the earlier ones were made in Taiwan, but someone told me they shifted production to Japan later on.
They are now. I have a CE-2W and it is definitely made in Japan, not just inspected.

No, it’s more of a Depth control. It makes the chorus more deep and warbly.
ah okay, thanks. looking forward to the space echo video!
Hey Stefan I really want a new pedal but don’t know what to get I have a distortion a delay and wah I’d like something different my budget is 100£
Flynn Hanbury Tenison Get a phaser 😁
The RE-201 is the GOAT. It destroyed my gas for all other delay and reverb pedals.
It is indeed magical. The only downsides are maintenance and transportation 😊
I have a 1981 MIJ black label long dash CE-2 and it will go with me to my grave
Tom Poynton I have one as well. Silver Screw, pre-serial numbers model (batch #200)
Tom Poynton It can't be beaten. It turned my average tone into pro-sound almost immediately. "Dated" my ass!
Who makes that black rack case, that you have the pedalboard sitting on top of?
Kieren Moore that’s a Temple board
Thanks man. But I was wondering about the rack case, underneath that pedal board ... eg see at 5:00 ... ??
Kieren Moore oops yeah, see what you mean, no idea myself unfortunately
All good, thanks man - you actually reminded me to check out those Temple Design boards a bit closer, too ... ;)
They're both unique in their own way ... as opposed to unique, in the exact same way ... ... ... ;)
You got me GASin bro! Stop it!
I'm "sorry"! 😂

Somebody missed the like button
It's tough. They are right next to each other, so I totally get how that can happen in the heat of like-battle :D
CE-1 is radically better as always.
