So sad the mother crying to guilt the 18yr old into rushing her decision. You rush her and she end up a divorcee like the 24 year old. If you trust your child, don't assume she will have sex. Her father does not seem to be the same as her. He is more wise and thoughtful, unlike the mom that thinks 18 is old and worries about gossiping friends of hers.

Yeah it's so mechanical "he's ready, are you?". I'm blown away how quickly they become serious, I can talk to a guy for ages without thinking he's the one for me. All of the excitement typically disappears in a few weeks, and they're talking wedding by then!
These are some very beautiful women and super dorky guys who have little going for them but expect the women to light them on fire. For a woman this life sucks, no wonder they wants kids ASAP
This documentary is so amazing, it makes me very emotional, choosing the right partner is soooo important, and of course we need guidance, advises.... and so on.
Is it just me or does it seem like their conversations are so much less superficial than the conversations in the general population. It’s like a culture without small talk.
Certainly not in general. These are important topics and the young people have incredibly little as basis for a very important decision. Of course they have intense discussions with others about it.
By the way, I would marry Merav. She is smart, pretty, sweet, studying for a degree and expects her husband to have a degree and respectful profession. My disadvantage is that I am originally from Brazil, and my Hebrew is not that great. Merav, if you don't find your soulmate in Israel, come to Miami.
I'm from a Jewish family which hasn't been religious (thank god) for 100 years. What I love best about the Jews I know - is their love of talking - not a boring one in the entire lot. What I like least is their love of talking....on and on and on ... sometimes saying noting.
I like how they pick and choose which elements of natural life given by God are good and bad..........or toxic. I thought my eyes were going to roll out of my head here.
@@carlosmarte3154 I'm pretty sure she does. As independent women, we are highly offended by any culture that degrades women and subjugates them to protect the fragile male ego :)
Hilary C They’d (Hasidic men and women alike) take just as much offense to our culture. A culture that throws family values out of the window in favor of individuality and hedonism. It isn’t a system that looks down on women, it’s a system that looks down on divorce...which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There is no “better” way to live. Each system has its flaws, yet people seem to believe that ours is unquestionably better.
Hilary C One of the main tenets of their religion is to procreate. The only value a Hasidic man or woman has comes from their ability to have a family and give Yahweh a new generation of followers. This comes back to what I was talking about earlier. We place a higher importance on the material side of a relationship, marriage for them is more of a social contract...love is a byproduct of marriage, not a prerequisite. You’re here to procreate and worship Yahweh, not for intellectual fulfillment. That applies to males and females. They believe that menstruation is the punishment for Eve’s original sin, and the chances of becoming pregnant during menstruation are low; it makes sense for them to have such a low opinion of a process borne out of sin that prevents pregnancy. As for the censorship, they do it to prevent themselves from disobeying their God. Their mission is to procreate and worship, everything else is a distraction. Forcibly barring yourself from whatever it may be is common among all hardliners (whether political, religious, etc). Women aren’t second class citizens, they just have a different role to perform in the community. A stay at home father would be criticized for not doing his duty, and the same would apply to a mother that’s out working instead of nurturing her children. Women are free to seek out a partner that encourages them to work, and men are free to find partners that prefer to stay at home. No one is being forced or made into a possession. These rules and customs seem absurd to you and I both, but that’s no reason to look down on the way they do things. They are free to leave the community and become regular practicing Jews whenever or if ever they wish.
I have only ever had relationships where men see me as their mother. I would love to have a partner who made some decisions on my behalf for a change. I think that this is what this girl is saying?
THAT'S what it's like in THAT mileu. It's very commen, you notice both the children agree & understand her pain & concern? Perhaps y'all can learn & not bitch?
Rose, an American mother here.... I was so surprised how Esti's mother talked to her!...no daughter here would let a mother talk to her like that...I would love to, though. They would think we were bossy, and none of our business, and not even care how we felt. So sad, I think I would rather be Jewish, and my children tolerate a Mother's heart, feelings, and tears of concern shed for them.

That happened to me, the change after the marriage ceremony, it was devastating. He stopped acting, became abusive and controlling, dishonest and deceitful. He was looking at every single woman he saw (in the wrong way), he'd literally nearly break his neck to see if the car in front of us was driven by a woman then wouldn't take his eyes off of her until he saw another, I couldn't even go to the grocery store with him. . He'd go on hunting trips in the camper, alone, and I found a pornographic poster under the mattress, a TV and porno movies he'd rented, it was so disgusting, hurtful and shameful. He was controlling and gaslighted me so much that I left, with him screaming at me every time I loaded the truck while moving. I worked so hard to get us a house and home, it was all for nothing.
I feel so sorry for Etsi her mother is putting so much pressure on her, saying friends were asking about her and its a disgrace. What sane person would say that to her daughter. I've 2 girl 15 and 23, I would never say anything like that. I love and respect my girls to make their own choices in their life and love life.
I worked with a Hassidic family years ago, and read some of their books. I got the idea that dating wasn't something talked about like Esti's Mom is doing at 46:15, talking about it with others.
Ok I’m some random guy in Australia who is not Jewish. This is actually a really peaceful, nice documentary. And I’ve developed a crush on Benny. He is hot and seems really nice. I hate the way his friend ditches him in the end.

Not really an issue. If this is the case then all the couple has to do is for the wife to go to a doctor to verify it and the doctor writes a note to the rabbi that the waiting period needs to be less than 7 days. The rabbi then grants permission for the couple have sex before the 7 day period. ends.
What is wrong with that marriage counsellor than she was talking about menstrual cycle. I laughed so hard at her ignorance. Menstrual blood is not poisonous. I for one would not have intercourse when i have my period, but she is making it out to sound that the woman is also poisonous. She used the example with the lab rats to say it is poisonous. Menstrual blood is mainly composed of blood, old parts of the uterine tissue, cells from the mucus lining of the vagina and bacteria making up the vaginal flora. What is wrong with these ill informed advisors. Smdh!!!!
Well, God says she is unclean on her cycle. Even I, a Christian, knows what the Old Testament says about it. Just because we know the science of what it is doesn't change the Law that God has made.
I agree. First of all, that girl had been married before, so she's probably familiar with the laws she has to abide by (check when her period is over, then count another seven days etc) so there was no need at all to spew out these lies about menstrual blood being the most unclean thing there is in the world ever EVEEEEER :D Which isn't even true according to jewish law, as far as I know - touching a corpse is the most ritually unclean thing. And the lab rats experiment definitely never happened, that whole shtick is completely ridiculous.

I really enjoyed this. I love the guy who is unsure and questioning. Don't do it if it didn't feel right. The girl he met had 0 chemistry towards him and he don't feel like a cherished king. Most of the guys seem very nice and gentle, but the girls appear too strong and aggressive. Weird. I hope they find the perfect match.
What I see: The whole world is obsessed with the Jews, their state, and their way of life, or absolutely anything about Jews in general, and in the same manner the secular Jews are obsessed with the Orthodox Jews, and their way of life. And for that I feel very special!!!
OhMaDayzz I would disagree . Her mother is well aware of the community they live in. If Esti loses her virginity during one of those ‘dates’ she would be the untouchable, nobody would marry her. I think her mom is absolutely right , if he wants to be with her, then marry her.
Not to be insulting, but you don't know what crazy is if you think Esti's Mom is crazy. Yes, she was emotional and emphatic in her views. But then this is her daughter's future that was at stake. Young Orthodox girls don't have so many years to find a husband before it's assumed that they are single because something is wrong with them (this what I hear.) I've heard that it's considered unusual if they are not married by age 20.
This is how dating should be, with respect and raising important questions because you looking for to spend your life with that person and create a family. wow! Todays dating its like animal fair.
As an Orthodox Christian I was so glad to have such an insight on the society from which my religion originated from! They all seem to be very nice people and wish the best in all their lives! Greetings from Romania!
'A woman's menstruation period is the biggest defilement on earth' ... life is too short for such bullshit. It saddens me though that some women buys into it when it obviously comes from some ignorant men. It's accepted body shaming.
Mr. Perfect why bully ? They are religious they need to get married they don't sleep around. In israel the parent support the children's after the weeding.they buy house for them .so how can't you say they want them out ?
I'm not Jewish but I can understand the mom's point of view. Dating for years on end gets kind of pointless. And most of the time, one of the people in the relationship is only staying with the person for companionship or sex until they meet someone better. It is the woman that suffers in that kind of situation because our biological clock ticks way faster. I truly think the mother had good intentions and wanted her daughter to be spared that pain and to have a happy marriage and life.
I think many are missing the point. These aren't marriages of love. These are basically business deals which hopefully result in successful reproduction to keep the faith tradition populated. They are looking for business partners with similar traditions and focus, not soul mates.
Ilham Try to understand where she’s coming from. Her daughter is getting to the age where no one will marry her, and she’s been on date after date with this guy when the custom is to marry after 4-5. People will start to think that she’s just sleeping around with him, and then her marriage will really be impossible.

It dawned on me, while watching the film, that Brides - if they wish to satisfy their husband - and themselves - on the Wedding night, That the date of the wedding itself, has to be carefully calculated, according to her cycle, and where it falls... Are there rules about this, am I being accurate , that that would be a concern, and do others get involved - Are they made aware of reasons for certain dates being required or; put off ?

I'd wager that 90% of the negative comments about the customs portrayed in this documentary come from people who think of themselves as non-judgmental and open-minded. My only criticism is the occasionally sloppy English subtitles. At one point, Ariel is described as "gentile." I'm pretty sure the translator was going for "gentle," but it's an unfortunate (perhaps even humorous) gaffe.

The marriage counsellor is meshuggah! What a load of rubbish! Menstrual blood is not toxic! It's sad how menstruating is seen as a big shame in the orthodox community. I do like some aspect of orthodox Judaism such as the close family bonds and it must be nice to go on dates knowing that the guy isn't just after one thing. I do get that separating during menstruation can be a good thing as it makes the couple want each other more but personally I wouldn't go to that extreme of not touching at all or waiting so long to be "clean". Why wait another week after your period is finished? Although I do admire aspects of orthodox Judaism, it does seem to me to be very oppressive. I feel sorry for these girls and boys being forced to get married so young; they're only kids and they haven't experienced life. I'm 27 and the idea of getting married is scary! Watching this makes me think about what lunacy and rubbish religion is when people take it to the extreme.

I think there are good aspects with Orthodox Jewish people and not so good aspects. It just seems so primitive to me how the mother's practically are forcing their daughter's to get married so quickly. Barely turning 18 and already making appointments to see the match maker. Do the daughter's have no right to make decisions on their own ? Are they not allowed to experience life and work, go on vacations, have fun with friends ? Or is there fear of the daughter's being touched before marriage. I understand values, purity and the sanctity of marriage but to explain over and over to your daughter's that menstrual blood is poisonous and it killed lab rats ? I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at the pure ignorance of what that woman said. It's crazy smh.. I think she meant well but by telling your daughter's this false lie is just that "a lie". You're starting your daughter's out with a lie and my goodness the "pressure" of getting married so the mother doesn't get blamed for her daughter still not married or being cursed because she cannot find a suitable mate ! 😱‼️
This was truly beautiful .. I admire these pure and holy values of Judaism . If the rest of the world had these same values the divorce rate around the world would shrink astronomically ! Sexual disease would probably be a thing of the past as well .. Shalom Aliechem !
I don’t understand these 5 minute meetings, “dates” as they call them. What can you learn about a person in 5 minutes? It’s not enough time. Say the wrong thing, and you’ve completely messed up and won’t have another meeting.
I agree completely. I don’t understand how a couple can only see each other a few times before getting engaged, as I would want to live with my partner for at least a year before deciding to spend the rest of my life with that person.

What? She wants to protect her child and to marry properly. Nothing wrong with that. Compare her to your mother and many those around you that allow their daughters to sleep around with different guys.
Personally, I think Esti's mother has very valid concerns, given what behavior is considered normal in her community. And even though she said she was worried about Esti and Ariel eventually "touching" before marriage, I think her real fear is that if they date too long, the mystery will be gone. Can anyone else see that Esti and Ariel have very different personalities? She is very aggressive, and Ariel is more subdued. I think Esti's mother is afraid Ariel will get tired of her daughter or start to see traits in her he doesn't like - and then want to break off the dating and/or engagement. I really believe she was just using the issue of "touching" as an excuse.

So yes I am serious because it is my opinion not yours.
Yeah it's so mechanical "he's ready, are you?". I'm blown away how quickly they become serious, I can talk to a guy for ages without thinking he's the one for me. All of the excitement typically disappears in a few weeks, and they're talking wedding by then!

Oh Dan was so sweet on the first meeting. You could see how every question was just one right thing after the next.
These are some very beautiful women and super dorky guys who have little going for them but expect the women to light them on fire. For a woman this life sucks, no wonder they wants kids ASAP
This documentary is so amazing, it makes me very emotional, choosing the right partner is soooo important, and of course we need guidance, advises.... and so on.

Very interesting show.... I wish them all much happiness.

Interesting culture. Very close knit, old skool. Thank you for the video.

Marina28ish She isn’t a virgin anymore, and that’s pretty important for them. She isn’t “brand new” to an Orthodox man anymore.
@@carlosmarte3154 She knows that Carlos. It's still an offensive thing to say to a woman.
A woman LOVES BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO?!?!?!!?! omg.

Esti's mother is absolutely crazy. What an overbearing and overly emotional mother.
Young Orthodox girls don't have so many years to find a husband before it's assumed that they are single because something is wrong with them (this what I hear.) I've heard that it's considered unusual if they are not married by age 20.
certifiable.
This is how dating should be, with respect and raising important questions because you looking for to spend your life with that person and create a family. wow!

'A woman's menstruation period is the biggest defilement on earth' ... life is too short for such bullshit. It saddens me though that some women buys into it when it obviously comes from some ignorant men. It's accepted body shaming.
These are incredible brave people who are willing and able to make a commitment. And our youth are so inadequate, it is appalling ...
That mother was such a bully. She wants the daughter married and out.
IT was startling and confusing to read that one young woman is in love with a "gentile" which is a mistake in the subtitles and should read "gentle".
Mom had crocodile tears! She just wants grandkids NOW! XD
I so enjoyed this special on The beautiful Hasids. If only EVERYONE had the rich attitude of that young boy! What a world it would be!
I think many are missing the point. These aren't marriages of love. These are basically business deals which hopefully result in successful reproduction to keep the faith tradition populated. They are looking for business partners with similar traditions and focus, not soul mates.
Dude, what is the problem with Esti's mom, my god poor girl !!!?? She always makes a drama for nothing...seems annoying
Ilham Try to understand where she’s coming from. Her daughter is getting to the age where no one will marry her, and she’s been on date after date with this guy when the custom is to marry after 4-5. People will start to think that she’s just sleeping around with him, and then her marriage will really be impossible.
Ilham negative you are she's just 18 .
Why their dates are "dry"??..sitting on a bench ..go for a drink..A coffee something to eat 😂😂😂

Learning so much, and more questions arise.... Many comments about the menstrual cycle, as touched up on during the film...
Very astute! in some circles yes. But now mostly they rely on pills.

@Mrssewhardtoplease lmao! Check it out. Its true. This blood that disgusts us so much was actually our first food 😂
For these ignorant religion fanatics because it's blood it's seen as some sort of evil. In some Indian believe a woman was isolated from her entire family for the whole 7 days I believe, until she stops bleeding.
The blood is the failed embrio and uteres lining that would of protected the fetits if it would have grown so it is kind of a dead kid.
@@1BestCookie its not kind of a dead kid because in a usual cases if we get our periods there was no embryo to begin with. And if there is an embryo it nurishes from the blood. So menstruation is our 1st food.

And what have we learned with our 5 year long dates? If our divorce rate is any indication, well, not so much.
These 5 minute dates are probably for This Video. Don't think there is such a thing anywhere.

Esti's mother is the stuff of lifelong psychological problems.
She's a meddler and a manipulator but all these kids who want to marry are mostly controlled by the adults around them.
She is a true drama queen.
