I got to work with David Clayton Thomas on a summer tour in 2003! He was still an amazing vocalist and the whole touring band was fire!
    Peace

Laura Nyro had great way with turning a phrase, she was dating the bass player and played several songs of David, he says he just "had to record And When I Die"

Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. They have had a lot of great songs such as "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die", "Hi-De-Ho" "Lucretia MacEvil", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me" etc.

You forgot to mention that Al Kooper was an original member and lead vocalist and they were more bluesy, jazzy, and less poppy than when David Clayton Thomas took to commanding h th e lead vocals. They dominated the pop scene for 2 or 3 years in the early 1970’s!

"I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" by BS&T is one of my all time favorites. It was very popular with the lowrider crowd. I would hear it in the park where they were cruising on Saturday afternoons. I love that song!

I agree with boosuden. "God Bless the Child " is fantastic! "And When I die" (was that a Laura Nyro Song, anybody?) On the rowdy side try "Go Down Gamblin'" & "Lucretia McEvil" . 1969 for this album..maybe 10 years before its time! There was a clarinet hidden among the flutes!

I remember when my oldest sister bought this album when it first came out. She's 12 yrs older than I. I used to beg her to play it. I was blown away by the horns, mostly the trombone. Great jam, still to this day!!

LOVE this song! One of the songs to be played at my Funeral is Blood Sweat and Tears’ “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” ❤ With spinning wheel, when my parents played this song as a child, it made me think of a carousel; my adult mind feels the instrumentation and groove of this phenomenal song.

This song, Up Up And Away (In My Beautiful Ballooon), Magic Carpet Ride, and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, were the earliest radio songs I remember, my favorites from my first memories.

  • @mikecaetano
    @mikecaetano ปีที่แล้ว +6

The horn flourishes to kick the song off, accented by some choice cowbell, quickly grabs the ear for the funky verses to follow. Then to fill those middle bars with some straight up jazz. Nice! The flutes evoke carnival attractions filled with spinning wheels. This dropped when I was a little kid and I remember hearing it on the radio my parents listened to. Blood, Sweat & Tears played at the local fair a few times back then too, iirc.

B,S&T is an American jazz rock band founded in New York City in 1967 and they are renowned for combining unique brass instruments with rock instruments. The group went through several band members, but their sound encompassed a wide range of musical styles, they infused elements of rock, pop, R&B, soul with a heavy dose of big band jazz. This gave the band a very unique sound and it certainly set them apart from the rest of the bands in this time period. (And I might add that was hard to do) The group's self-titled debut album spent seven weeks on top of the US charts in 1969 and won the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year in 1970. The song you just heard was a track on that album. I think the whole album is wonderful. Here's another song from the same album, if interested. "Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die/You Made Me So Very Happy - LIVE 1970 [Rity Archive]" (by the channel: Reelin' In The Years66) because the sound quality is pretty decent. I love David Clayton-Thomas's vocals and he was a great front man. But Al Kooper was an incredible singer and keyboardist. He composed several of B, S&T's songs. However, he ended up leaving the band because the bands managers wanted to move him into exclusively playing the keyboard and composing duties and hiring a stronger vocalist for the group. Al Kooper went on to become a record producer for Columbia Records. But here's one of his best songs (IMO) "Al Kooper - I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know (Live)" (this is a live album) Boy this took me down memory lane, thanks so much for sharing, Biz

Al Kooper was great talent - but his time with BS&T was limited and so was their success when he was with them. The band took off when they canned Kooper and brought in David Clayton-Thomas.

This is a great band. Yeah, that was flute you heard at the end. I learned somewhere along the way that the fingering for a sax and a flute are the same, so that would have been their sax guy on the flute, I'd think. Not all sax players can play flute, I don't think, just because the blowing needed to make a note, which I think is called the "attack", is so different between the 2 instruments. The suggestion dagmars made is a great list to react to.

I had to return to listen again tonight. What a tremendous song (and enduring). In the most flattering sense possible, much of BST’s music reminds me of the children’s game Whack-A-Mole. As soon as one vanishes you know another is going to stick its head up - but you have no idea where or what they will look (sound) like.
Any song randomly chosen fromtheir Greatest Hits will be a good song. “And WhenI Die” is one I especially like. fheough severl tempo changes, it has some clever lines, some humor, and some serious things to think about.
For tonight, Biz, I am adding your review/reaction for BST-Spinning Wheel to my Exceptional Music Reaction Videos Folder. Thank you., Biz.

This band was created to exploit the newly-discovered market for rock & roll bands with horns first exposed by Chicago, who were still playing clubs at the time. B,S, & T then rushed into the studio to be the first to get an album out,
which they did, and did very well, making a very good record under what had to be stressful circumstances. Blood, Sweat, and Tears was a good band, but if I’m choosing I prefer Chicago: they had the original idea and I prefer Chicago’s music. When I was very young I heard a lot of Blood, Sweat, and Tears on the radio, this song especially.

"What goes up must come down........spinning wheels got to go 'round......catch a painted long on the spinning wheel ride. Talking about a Merri-Go- Round, and the music at the end with the flute and the up and down light musical pattern is the type of music heard while on the ride.
Some of the painted ponies go and down and some don't move, but they all spin around on a big wheel.

Toronto's David Clayton Thomas arrived on vocals and became essentially the voice of classic B,S&T. See 'Lucretia McEvil', 'God Bless the Child', 'And When I Die', 'Go Down Gamblin' '. 😊🤙🏼🎺🎷🥁🎸🎵🎶❤️✨️🕊
