As was customary in the late '60s, groups often covered songs by other singer-songwriters they admired. In these 7 songs, only "Sometime in Winter" written by Steve Katz, the guitarist and "Spinning Wheel" written by singer David Clayton-Thomas are originals. "Smiling Phases" is from Traffic, "More and More" from Little Milton, "And When I Die" from Laura Nyro, and, of course, "God Bless the Child" from Billie Holiday. Of course, the arrangements are their own, under the supervision of producer James William Guercio (he also produced Chicago's early albums).

They're so often compared to Chicago as they were the two late 60s bands that featured horn, but Chicago was a rock band with horns. BS&T was a jazz fusion band that dabbled in rock. They really had the superior horn section, but couldn't really reproduce the core rock elements of Chicago - specifically, Terry Kath's guitar work. Also, Chicago were better writers. Still, BS&T was a great band and David Clayton Thomas a fantastic blues singer!

It says a lot about the music industry of those days and the catholic tastes of the music buying public that "Spinning Wheel" could be a huge international hit single back then. I think being so very distinct from the guitar band sound, having that sophistication, raw energy and fantastic vocal performance sold it to the younger generation. But, also with that sound harking back to people like Tommy Dorsey, Charlie Spivak, Duke Elllington and the big bands of the 1940s and 1950s it also appealed to the older generation.
"Vehicle" by the Ides of March and "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago and "Spinning Wheel" are outstanding examples of commercially successful jazz/rock singles from that era - though of course Jazz had made the singles charts in the 1960s before with Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" being the obvious example from the early 1960s. In the UK at least Kenny Ball's and his Jazzmen had a succession of hits in the early 1960s "Midnight in Moscow" being my favourite of those.
Although they (arguably) fell slightly more on the rock side of the line than BS&T or Chicago, I would say that Steely Dan perfected and progressed Jazz/Rock fusion into the 1970s?

Just as an aside... B, S, & T played at Woodstock. They were not in the movie due to contractional issues. Amazon music does have their Woodstock set. Its worth a listen if you like them. Al Kooper was instrumental in the establishment of the band. Somewhat different vibe. If you like Al, try an album named Super Sessions.. It is a collection of song performed by Al Kooper with Mike Bloomfield on one side and the other side was Stephen Stills. There are many more great B, S, & T songs.. too many to list here.. Yes, also a huge Chicago fan, and pretty much any band with a horn section.

"O du lieber Augustin" - very few ever recognize that traditional ditty - and with the German oom-pah too! 54 years ago, I bought this album as a college junior, and sat in our apartment's psychedelic room with roommates listening intently, as you are, to each unfolding revelatory track. It feels like last week - it's still a vivid memory. It was all about the brass arrangements - they are classic! Lew Soloff on trumpet, Fred Lipsius on sax, Steve Katz on guitar, Jim Fielder on bass, etc. - their solos were even transcribed in Down Beat magazine. For a better thrill, listen to their earlier debut album "Child is Father to the Man" with the founder, the great Al Kooper - it's one of the first concept albums that is all sizzle, all the way through!

I have mentioned this band to you in one of the Chicago videos. BS&T predate Chicago by a couple of years, and are definitely more jazz oriented, which was the attraction, to me. We listened almost exclusively to jazz in my home as I grew up, this band had a little taste of the rock that was so much more popular, and the Eric Sateé was just a bonus for me as I was a French horniest and played in the concert band and woodwind ensemble at school, so I was equally grounded in classical and jazz. David Clayton Thomas's lead vocals are astounding, and BS&Ts version of Billy Holiday's iconic song, God Bless The Child opened my eyes to vocal jazz, which was not the kind of jazz we listened to at home ( even though it is nearly all that I perform these days!)
At the time, late mid 60s, the Summer Of Love was happening just blocks from my home in San Francisco, and although there had been popular music bands with a sax or a trumpet, there were no longer many big bands left ( I used to sneak in to clubs to see Count Basie and his orchestra play! They and Duke Ellington's Bands still played to small audiences). There were some R&B bands with horns, but BS&T, Tower of Power (from Oakland just across the bay from San Francisco, and originally featuring my half brother Rick on vocals, check him out on You're Still A Young Man for a ballad, and Down To The Nightclub, for a funky, gritty, banger ), and then, a couple of years later Chicago Transit Authority, who were originally a live club band before becoming recording artists. This was the trifecta of horn bands, until Steely Dan appeared, and slowly morphed from a guitar band to a horn band with keyboards and guitars. BS&T is what we musicians listened to before Steely Dan! BS&T didn't last too long, precisely because they were so jazz oriented.

That was fun Nick, if you was going to do a Blood, Sweat & Tears album, that is definitely the one to listen to. It was a huge album for them to. I think four hits coming off that album. Spinning Wheel is definitely their biggest & possibly their best song. But on their first album with Al Kooper, they do a song called I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. That might be their best song & one that you should check out. There also a couple of great covers of that song. Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa together do a killer version & Gary Moore does another fantastic version.

Thanks for the time machine ride. This album came out when I was in college. I'm sure I haven't heard it in at least 45 years, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could still sing along with most of it. Probably because of how much we listened to it back then. However, I didn't remember that they did Satie here. I'm pretty sure that was my first exposure to his music, which I still enjoy today. And I can't ever get enough of the brass. And the flute always makes me think of girls in long, flowing, flowery dresses with flowers in their hair, bare feet and tambourines. Once a hipppie, always a hippie, I guess. Warning: old lady comment approaching. People today have no idea what they're missing by ignoring all the great music from the 60's and 70's. There was such amazing stuff then. Thanks for bringing this to a wider audience.

Nick...thank you so very much for reacting to this Masterpiece Blood Sweat and Tears album ♥ I love your reactions. Back in the day, the airwaves was filled with Beatles songs 🎵, and along comes a group that sounds like a big band of the 40's with a soulful Frank Sinatra type singer meets a psychedelic rock band of the 60's and blended the two genres with Jazz and Classical music 🎶 and put out this album which every song is prog....lots of transitions, and I and my friends ate it up! And this band pioneered that Jazz fusion rock that paved the way for Chicago....Tower of Power....Steely Dan...and Earth Wind &Fire could be received. Thank you so much. They are so underrated.

Blood Sweat & Tears is one of my all-time Bands in music history. Love them!!! React to "Spinning Wheel" which is taking a regular Amusement Park Spinning Wheel with it's bouncing horses which people rode at the time with that Circus music in the background playing and putting it on a record.....it's a trip of laughter and fun!!! I Love it!!! Very very talented musicians!!! formed in 1967 in New York. This band influenced ..bands like Chicago....Tower of Power.....Earth Wind & Fire....one of the underrated bands in music history yet one of the most popular band among the people of the 60's and early 70's. Good reactions from you!!! React to the entire album!!! It's a Masterpiece!!! Fire!!!!

Ah, the memories! I actually performed on a stage with original member Fred Lipsius (alto sax and keyboards). We were both on keyboards backing up someone. It’s been so long I can’t remember who, but I still see him occasionally at seminars I attend. Great reaction, Nick. If you look them up, they have had dozens of members over the years.

Fred Lipsius is fab, fab, fab. I attended an early (Al Kooper era) BST concert in Pittsburgh and before the start I snuck downstairs to the hallway outside the warmup room. Freddie was warming up, and I was in heaven listening to his scales and fingering riffs.

What an inspired choice! I think it might have been this band that gave me a love for horns with those oh so tight blasts one moment and creating a divine wash of harmonies the next. They played here in New Zealand and I got to see them live in this relatively small hall (a bit like somewhere where you would go and see a shakespear play, an opera house) and those horns were larger than life, not to mention the singer and his wonderful voice and phrasing...
I really loved sitting here listening to these mostly uninterrupted, with you. You made it feel relaxed and nice. Music like this should be listened to as an album, not a song, I'm sorry but 1 song is just a taste, almost an insult which is 90% of the world today maybe hehe, like a token and possible spent half of that song thinking about something else. You may never see this, but I thank you because I spend a lot of time isolated...
I hope your mum is good, and if she is not, I hope she went naturally...
