Head guy , David Byrne, said he is on the autism spectrum. He is clearly a musical genius. He can perform at this high energy pace for an entire concert. His band manages to keep up with him. He is brilliant! and the music he creates is unique and compelling.

The entire Stop Making Sense movie/concert (which this clip is from) is worth a watch just to see the show start off simple, then just build and build.
Tina Weymouth, the bassist, is an absolute legend. She lays down the most amazing groove on everything she does. She has her own band called Tom Tom Club. Check out their track "Genius of Love" sometime.
I read an interview with her where she said there's two ways to play the bass: like a great big horn or a great big drum. Since then, when I play I ask myself, horn or drum?

Every time I see this video I just can't get over the two ladies singing backup. They are giving it their all physically and aren't looking bored like some additional voices on stage can ♥
Talking Heads is a great rabbit hole to go down. They were a very talented group that were very influential for later bands, both musically & visually (they were a bunch of Rhode Island School of Design kids after all). "Stop Making Sense" was the concert film that was taken from, & was directed by the late, great Jonathan Demme, who also directed Philadelphia & Silence Of The Lambs.

Once in a Lifetime, Psycho Killer, This Must Be the Place, I Zimbra, Listening Wind, Nothing But Flowers, And She Was, Blind, Road To Nowhere are all great songs out of so many. There version of Take Me to the River is one of the best covers. ALL of Stop Making Sense is brilliant. Such an incredible concept for a concert.
This Must Be the Place is my absolute fave. It was played by my mother and father all of the time for each other. My sister and I both incorporated it into our weddings. When my father passed in 2020, we sent him off with this beautiful song. ❤

This whole concert is phenomenal. The staging, the track list, everything. It really is the ultimate concert performance. Thankfully it’s all captured on film. 100% worth reacting to from start to finish, or at least watching it in your own time. Cannot possibly be disappointed. Track by track the band come out until the full band is on stage and doing this. David Byrne the front man with all the energy!

I’ve loved the Talking Heads since the first time I heard them back in 77. I just recently turned my 23-year-old son onto them and he loves him just as much.
The full concert filmed (during 3 nights) by Jonathan Denme is going to be in 4k in theatres/cinemas again. This is a must for any music real lover. And! There's also a David Byrne's "American Utopia" (by Spike Lee) for your enjoyment with songs by TH and various musical adventures by Byrne. The staging is a marvel!

i’m ashamed to say i used to hate talking heads, or at the very least, i wasn’t a big fan. i just entered college and my friends and i went to see stop making sense’s new release and OH MY GOD I WAS SO WRONG!! i run a radio show and they’re all ive been able to play for 3-4 months now haha
New wave and punk were where I went as mainstream music went down the paths of disco and the likes of Van Halen. I saw TH, b-52s, Elvis Costello, many others live in small venues in the late '70s & early '80s. They're one pillar of my musical foundations, with Talking Heads at the core of this pillar.
All true, but compared to what passes for music today, Van Halen was great. The problem is that the Eddie Van Halen band led to a ton of really bad "hair metal" bands (I'm talking to YOU, Whitesnake).
I hear you, and I can relate. I grew up in Austin, and we had an incredible punk scene in the mid 70s throughout the early 90s, during the post-punk, post new wave eras. I was a teenager, and went to all the punk, and new wave shows in the clubs, as minors were allowed. I was lucky to see amazing local Austin punk and new wave bands, as well as national and international bands, for next to nothing. What was even better, was that the venues were tiny, and my friends and I got to meet and hang out with a lot of the musicians; many of whom went on to be very famous later in life. When that happened, it was nearly impossible to see them in the same way, ever again. But, I am glad so many of them got famous, good for them.
Watch the whole concert. It's worth every second and I defy you to stop smiling through the whole thing. My face ached from grinning ear to ear. It was incredible.
Tina Weymouth is one of the greatest bassists, she still plays as well today as she did in the 70's and 80's. She's 72 years old now. David Byrne is a musical genius, and he always has something fun up his sleeve for the live shows. You should check out "Burning Down the House" "Wild Wild Life" "Once in a Lifetime" "And She Was" "Road To Nowhere " to mention a few. Glad you enjoyed this, they've always been one of my favorites. I was fortunate to have attended two of the nights they filmed this at The Pantages Theater. I was a senior in high school and had seen Talking Heads several times previously, but this particular tour was so well choreographed and the sound quality was superb! REALLY wish they would unite for more shows!
I think it's worth noting that David Bryne, the lead singer, is on the autism spectrum and I 100% think that's part of why they've got such a dynamic, different sort of sound than most bands. His quirky singing combined with the rest of the band's (esp Tina, the bassist) outstanding playing just makes this an outstanding band.

@@karenfryberger4260 To be fair, that might be why the rest of the band isn't very fond of him. Outright social awkwardness isn't always a good thing when you are in a band with three other people. There is no doubt he was creatively brilliant in the late 70s thru the mid 80s... but by many accounts he's kind of a jerk. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Asperger's Syndrome is a legitimate thing... but just maybe some times the aloof jerk doesn't have a mental disorder... he's just a jerk.
He came into our local (NOLA) bar on New Year's Eve 2015 and, while we (on mushrooms) stood around freaking out that he was there but not approaching him, he loaded up the juke box with amazing songs and then left. So cool!
David Byrne toured last year (2022), it’s definitely worth checking out the videos on TH-cam. He is amazing. The same style is recognizable 20 years later.
Like other people have said, TH was a large part of making new wave huge and was a big influence on other bands. David Byrne, the leader, is a mad genius whose ideas and innovations were historic. You should also note that Tina Weymouth was an amazing bass player in a time when female bassists were almost unheard of and probably still are. Check out Girlfriend Is Better from this same concert/movie, so you can see how much they used rhythm and killer beats to create their sound.
Hi Marty. I don't need to look up Carol Kaye. Carol Kaye is the most heard unheard of musician in the World. She laid down the groove on some 10,000 recordings of various genres and was a key member of the elite session band The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew included other such notables as Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. She's still going strong at the age of 88 and has a TH-cam channel. Tina Weymouth had never played bass before the Talking Heads. She was founding member Chris Frantz's girlfriend. But she had taught herself to play guitar. They couldn't find a bass player they liked so they asked her to give the bass a try. She succeeded magnificently. What more could you ask? Carol Kaye's eminence among all bassists, not just female, does not throw shade on Tina Weymouth's incredible talent in any way, shape, or form. Give credit where credit is due. Cheers.
From one music lover to another, you need this whole concert in your life. It changed my life, honestly. You don’t have to react to it, but watch it. I wasn’t even a Talking Heads fan before I watched it. It’s a movie called “Stop Making Sense” directed by Jonathan Demme. It’s just a concert, but it’s amazing. It starts with David Byrne, the singer on the first song. Then every song they add a new member. It sounds crazy, but it’s sooooo entertaining. I’ve watched it hundreds of times. This song is with the full band. Don’t be like me and watch it late in life. Cheers! ❤
Great selection! This concert was designed to be filmed by director Johnathan Demme. It starts out w/Byrne alone on stage and slowly adds ppl, sets, instruments, etc as each song is performed. One of the great concert films of all time. Thanks Polo!
This is one of those instances where the live recording beats the studio hands down. Something about the frenetic nature of the running makes it crazy good.

You should consider watching this whole concert video. In my opinion one of the best live shows ever caught on tape. It’s called Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense. It is fantastic the whole show starts as a blank stage and David Byrne comes out with a boom box and an acoustic guitar and destroys “Physco Killer” and then as the show goes on they gradually build in the rest of the stage. Highly recommend !!
I saw them one time, at Forest Hills Stadium, August 19, 1983. They rocked. The whole stadium was electrified with their energy. l recall David running around the stage as he does here. It was an amazing show.
They were a great, very original band - and the movie from with this is taken (Stop Making Sense) is one of the most well constructed and executed concert films of all time.
I had the awesome experience to see this phenomenal band in the early stages of their beginnings at a club, many old timers would know about in NYC, called CBGB's back in 1976. As a young dude at 22, I was starry-eyed when I met my first ever female bassist. Tina Weymouth blew me away. She also went on the perform with her own group, a side project, called The Tom Tom Club. The drummer Chris Frantz is also her husband and played drums for the Club. Thanks Polo for sharing this awesome concert and reaction. Looking forward to more of this content from you. Stop Making Sense the concert is incredible to witness.
This was the soundtrack of my college years and it changed my taste in music. TH were all individually brilliant musicians and this concert will go down in history as one of best live performances of all time. Stop Making Sense is an experience you won’t regret 🙏🏼

Listen to words! It’s about war. This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco! It’s a strong message! Still relevant today! This band was big big big in the 80’s! They had a lot to say, and they spoke for all of us! Any song on any of their albums is timeless and powerful.
Talking Heads' album 'Remain in the Light' is flawless, a marriage of rock and electro effects that is astonishingly fertile, moving, excellent to dance to, and unique. Do give it a go dear Polo.
Stephen Colbert just interviewed Talking Heads on their 40th anniversary. They have a film coming out on IMAX. For those of you who don’t know, the drummer and female guitarist have been married to each other for 40 years. Interesting tidbit. I was in the military as was Tina’s father. He was a Navy Admiral and we happen to both have the same auto insurance company…USAA. Years ago when Tina and Chris were living in San Antonio where USAA is headquartered, their magazine did an article on the couple. I remember she was holding a gorgeous turquoise guitar.
Born in 83 like my first born son. I was an early Talking Heads fan from 1977. Scottish born David Byrne is an on the spectrum autism genius songwriter and performer. They were so funky. This is an art performance. It was the 80's. Brought in a world music vibe, working with Brian Eno has a huge influence on their work, too. And Bassist Tina Wymouth created the funkiest bass lines. I listen to only all of Talking Heads right through most of the 80's. A deep catalogue. Watch their live in Rome concert too. Burning Down the House is one of my faves,
You know I grew up on this at the time of the New Wave and all that and I still think that bunches like the Talking Heads or the Specials or Tom Tom Club or the Selecter or English Beat or Fun Boy Three that had blacks and whites playing and writing together were the absolute top musically and still are in regards to the cultural synergy these groups were able to reach. Truth is it was pure magic and for me and the other punks and weirdos of my gen simply the norm. So sad we live in a world where this is not much possible because we are all missing out on so much. Thanks God all these people were so brave. Needless to say none of them had it easy. Never stop praying that these vibes and open attitudes come back and everybody just chills. Peace out!

Yeah, it's a banger, yeah Byrne is a remarkable showman and the band absolutely nails it... but the lyrics are serious. Give me chills every time, especially these days when we've seen the US Capitol attacked, people openly threatening violence and talking about civil war. The message is that calamitous events can make partying to good music, and all that goes with it, a distant memory. Don't assume it can't happen to us. "Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit? The danger is the American public aren't getting what goes on because they are too busy with their superficial lives. Polo included it seems. Listen to the chorus of the song. I saw the Talking Heads on this tour in San Francisco, at the Warfield Theater, with the English Beat opening. It was the single greatest show I have ever seen (and I have seen 100's of shows). The power and positive energy was absolutely electric, and the crowd felt that electricity and seemed to dance right along with the band. I'm so glad you liked it. Burning Down the House and Take me to the River are must listens for sure.
It was 1980 when a friend (still a close friend😊) introduced me to 'Remain in Light'. That record blew my mind and opened myself up for a wise scale of music. Later i got the feeling that this record defined the decade. I saw Talking Heads in the very early 80ies at Cologne (Germany) when a couple of songs of the 'Stop Making Sense' tour where not even released on a record. 'Talking Heads' are still one of my favourite bands and i really think, that music aged very well.
David Byrne and Freddie Mercury from Queen IMHO put on the greatest stage shows ever. They are both great compsers, writers, directors and and musicians. David has this crazy ability to run around stage for 2 hrs and never miss a breath or a note while singing his artistic mind is unbelivelible. Thank you for doing this one haven't thought about them in years gonna watch the whole concert now...peace
One of the most underrated and underappreciated bands of all time . You should definitely explore more from them . I recommend some lesser known but amazing songs such as Blind , Mr. Jones , or the Lady don't mind . The hits can wait.

i’m ashamed to say i used to hate talking heads, or at the very least, i wasn’t a big fan. i just entered college and my friends and i went to see stop making sense’s new release and OH MY GOD I WAS SO WRONG!! i run a radio show and they’re all ive been able to play for 3-4 months now haha
New wave and punk were where I went as mainstream music went down the paths of disco and the likes of Van Halen. I saw TH, b-52s, Elvis Costello, many others live in small venues in the late '70s & early '80s. They're one pillar of my musical foundations, with Talking Heads at the core of this pillar.

All true, but compared to what passes for music today, Van Halen was great. The problem is that the Eddie Van Halen band led to a ton of really bad "hair metal" bands (I'm talking to YOU, Whitesnake).
I hear you, and I can relate. I grew up in Austin, and we had an incredible punk scene in the mid 70s throughout the early 90s, during the post-punk, post new wave eras. I was a teenager, and went to all the punk, and new wave shows in the clubs, as minors were allowed. I was lucky to see amazing local Austin punk and new wave bands, as well as national and international bands, for next to nothing. What was even better, was that the venues were tiny, and my friends and I got to meet and hang out with a lot of the musicians; many of whom went on to be very famous later in life. When that happened, it was nearly impossible to see them in the same way, ever again. But, I am glad so many of them got famous, good for them.
Watch the whole concert. It's worth every second and I defy you to stop smiling through the whole thing. My face ached from grinning ear to ear. It was incredible.
Talking Heads were an absolute revelation for this small town kid back in the day. What a great fusion of funk, rock and avant garde! Still love them.
My favorite Talking Heads song, and a brilliant performance. The bassist is a killer.

Stop Making Sense is such an iconic concert movie. After 40 years, it still holds up. Burning Down The House is my ring tone.

Tina Weymouth is one of the greatest bassists, she still plays as well today as she did in the 70's and 80's. She's 72 years old now. David Byrne is a musical genius, and he always has something fun up his sleeve for the live shows. You should check out "Burning Down the House" "Wild Wild Life" "Once in a Lifetime" "And She Was" "Road To Nowhere " to mention a few. Glad you enjoyed this, they've always been one of my favorites. Well, this dates me, but I was at this concert. Incredible energy. My favorite Talking Heads album came out in 78,More Songs About Buildings and Food.
We need music like this today. There’s a lot of things that sucked in the 80s but the music created a good vibe for everyone.

I was fortunate to have attended two of the nights they filmed this at The Pantages Theater. I was a senior in high school and had seen Talking Heads several times previously, but this particular tour was so well choreographed and the sound quality was superb! REALLY wish they would unite for more shows!

I think it's worth noting that David Bryne, the lead singer, is on the autism spectrum and I 100% think that's part of why they've got such a dynamic, different sort of sound than most bands. His quirky singing combined with the rest of the band's (esp Tina, the bassist) outstanding playing just makes this an outstanding band.

@@karenfryberger4260 To be fair, that might be why the rest of the band isn't very fond of him. Outright social awkwardness isn't always a good thing when you are in a band with three other people.
There is no doubt he was creatively brilliant in the late 70s thru the mid 80s... but by many accounts he's kind of a jerk. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Asperger's Syndrome is a legitimate thing... but just maybe some times the aloof jerk doesn't have a mental disorder... he's just a jerk.
He came into our local (NOLA) bar on New Year's Eve 2015 and, while we (on mushrooms) stood around freaking out that he was there but not approaching him, he loaded up the juke box with amazing songs and then left. So cool!
David Byrne toured last year (2022), it’s definitely worth checking out the videos on TH-cam. He is amazing. The same style is recognizable 20 years later.

Like other people have said, TH was a large part of making new wave huge and was a big influence on other bands. David Byrne, the leader, is a mad genius whose ideas and innovations were historic. You should also note that Tina Weymouth was an amazing bass player in a time when female bassists were almost unheard of and probably still are. Check out Girlfriend Is Better from this same concert/movie, so you can see how much they used rhythm and killer beats to create their sound.
Yes, Girlfriend Is Better might be the most iconic track from this movie. If only for the Big Suit.

Carol Kaye is the most heard unheard of musician in the World. She laid down the groove on some 10,000 recordings of various genres and was a key member of the elite session band The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew included other such notables as Glen Campbell and Leon Russell.
She's still going strong at the age of 88 and has a TH-cam channel.
Tina Weymouth had never played bass before the Talking Heads. She was founding member Chris Frantz's girlfriend. But she had taught herself to play guitar. They couldn't find a bass player they liked so they asked her to give the bass a try. She succeeded magnificently. What more could you ask?
Carol Kaye's eminence among all bassists, not just female, does not throw shade on Tina Weymouth's incredible talent in any way, shape, or form.

Masterpiece filmed event. Certainly a top 5 concert film of all time. Perfect storm of musical and visual talent from a band at their creative peak.
From one music lover to another, you need this whole concert in your life. It changed my life, honestly. You don’t have to react to it, but watch it. I wasn’t even a Talking Heads fan before I watched it. It’s a movie called “Stop Making Sense” directed by Jonathan Demme. It’s just a concert, but it’s amazing. It starts with David Byrne, the singer on the first song. Then every song they add a new member. It sounds crazy, but it’s sooooo entertaining. I’ve watched it hundreds of times. This song is with the full band. Don’t be like me and watch it late in life. Cheers! ❤

Great selection! This concert was designed to be filmed by director Johnathan Demme. It starts out w/Byrne alone on stage and slowly adds ppl, sets, instruments, etc as each song is performed. One of the great concert films of all time. Thanks Polo!

You should consider watching this whole concert video. In my opinion one of the best live shows ever caught on tape. It’s called Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense. It is fantastic the whole show starts as a blank stage and David Byrne comes out with a boom box and an acoustic guitar and destroys “Physco Killer” and then as the show goes on they gradually build in the rest of the stage. Highly recommend !!
I saw them one time, at Forest Hills Stadium, August 19, 1983. They rocked. The whole stadium was electrified with their energy. l recall David running around the stage as he does here. It was an amazing show.
They were a great, very original band - and the movie from with this is taken (Stop Making Sense) is one of the most well constructed and executed concert films of all time.

I had the awesome experience to see this phenomenal band in the early stages of their beginnings at a club, many old timers would know about in NYC, called CBGB's back in 1976. As a young dude at 22, I was starry-eyed when I met my first ever female bassist. Tina Weymouth blew me away. She also went on the perform with her own group, a side project, called The Tom Tom Club. The drummer Chris Frantz is also her husband and played drums for the Club. Thanks Polo for sharing this awesome concert and reaction. Looking forward to more of this content from you. Stop Making Sense the concert is incredible to witness.
I played at CBGB back in 1991. I played the night that Christian laettner hit the shot against Kentucky in the NCAA tournament. Anybody remember that?

Saw David Byrne last year on Broadway with his American Utopia show. Man still is a great performer. If you get a chance, give it a watch.
One of my favorites to this day. Discovered them while going to Louisiana in 83. Many fun times listening to them.

This album was my getting ready to go out soundtrack - especially Slippery People.
Stephen Colbert just interviewed Talking Heads on their 40th anniversary. They have a film coming out on IMAX. For those of you who don’t know, the drummer and female guitarist have been married to each other for 40 years. Interesting tidbit. I was in the military as was Tina’s father. He was a Navy Admiral and we happen to both have the same auto insurance company…USAA. Years ago when Tina and Chris were living in San Antonio where USAA is headquartered, their magazine did an article on the couple. I remember she was holding a gorgeous turquoise guitar.

Born in 83 like my first born son. I was an early Talking Heads fan from 1977. Scottish born David Byrne is an on the spectrum autism genius songwriter and performer. They were so funky. This is an art performance. It was the 80's. Brought in a world music vibe, working with Brian Eno has a huge influence on their work, too. And Bassist Tina Wymouth created the funkiest bass lines. I listen to only all of Talking Heads right through most of the 80's. A deep catalogue. Watch their live in Rome concert too. Burning Down the House is one of my faves,

I am a huge fan of the Talking Heads, and when this video came out in the 80's I was amazed. Loved it my whole life. Such a talented band.
You know I grew up on this at the time of the New Wave and all that and I still think that bunches like the Talking Heads or the Specials or Tom Tom Club or the Selecter or English Beat or Fun Boy Three that had blacks and whites playing and writing together were the absolute top musically and still are in regards to the cultural synergy these groups were able to reach. Truth is it was pure magic and for me and the other punks and weirdos of my gen simply the norm. So sad we live in a world where this is not much possible because we are all missing out on so much. Thanks God all these people were so brave. Needless to say none of them had it easy. Never stop praying that these vibes and open attitudes come back and everybody just chills. Peace out!
For a totally different take on the dichotomy of this song, read the lyrics. It's about the harshness of life during wartime.
Only David Byrne could take a song with such dark lyrics, and perform it with unmatched, upbeat choreography. And, it works!

Yeah, it's a banger, yeah Byrne is a remarkable showman and the band absolutely nails it... but the lyrics are serious. Give me chills every time, especially these days when we've seen the US Capitol attacked, people openly threatening violence and talking about civil war.
The message is that calamitous events can make partying to good music, and all that goes with it, a distant memory. Don't assume it can't happen to us.

The danger is the American public aren't getting what goes on because they are too busy with their superficial lives. Polo included it seems.

I saw the Talking Heads on this tour in San Francisco, at the Warfield Theater, with the English Beat opening. It was the single greatest show I have ever seen (and I have seen 100's of shows). The power and positive energy was absolutely electric, and the crowd felt that electricity and seemed to dance right along with the band. I'm so glad you liked it. Burning Down the House and Take me to the River are must listens for sure.

It was 1980 when a friend (still a close friend😊) introduced me to 'Remain in Light'. That record blew my mind and opened myself up for a wise scale of music. Later i got the feeling that this record defined the decade.
I saw Talking Heads in the very early 80ies at Cologne (Germany) when a couple of songs of the 'Stop Making Sense' tour where not even released on a record.
'Talking Heads' are still one of my favourite bands and i really think, that music aged very well.

David Byrne and Freddie Mercury from Queen IMHO put on the greatest stage shows ever. They are both great compsers, writers, directors and and musicians. David has this crazy ability to run around stage for 2 hrs and never miss a breath or a note while singing his artistic mind is unbelivelible. Thank you for doing this one haven't thought about them in years gonna watch the whole concert now...peace
'83 was one of the greatest years in pop music and culture that has ever been, and makes today's pop culture look like an apocalyptic hellscape.

You should definitely explore more from them . I recommend some lesser known but amazing songs such as Blind , Mr. Jones , or the Lady don't mind .

Underrated and underappreciated by whom? They were extremely appreciated and highly rated in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, at least. Glad that TH-cam is around so that younger generations can appreciate them all over again.

I still hear Queen , Aerosmith , Van Halen , Led Zeppelin, THE BEATLES, etc constantly played and referenced in the mainstream culture , the Talking Heads WERE ALWAYS considered counter culture before the term was invented .

My husband is a bass player and he is a huge fan of the talking heads and their bassist Tina Weymouth. She is his favorite bassist.
This concert is the 8th wonder of the world. Never gets old.
Such a strong band and this is one amazing film. Definitely have a good sound system for best results.
