What's with the "Dangerous" title? I was a Drill and Blast supervisor for 30 years in open pit mining in four different countries in the world and never once was anybody injured by a blast. Follow the safety rules and all will be well.

I agree explosives are dangerous in.the wrong hands. Good training sure helps. My Uncle was a WW 2 UDT. He never got hurt or anyone in his team.did either

Phenomenal footage and having watched and attended blasting in Quarries, it never ceased to amaze me how a chemical combustion shockwave can shift hardened rock so simply..
It's not a combustion, it's a detonation.

💪 The prep work must be tedious & sometimes redundant but the payoff is worth every bit of it !! BOOM BOOM out goes the overburden
I have great respect for blasting. I'm usually setting blasting mats in close proximity to buildings and roadways.
Could not agree more wrt the respect.
Often used to blast around 50 metric tons of emulsion for around 100Kt of dolorite rock 80m from some houses.
Never had any ejections from the blast holes.
Used 3metre stemming, laser face profiling, bore hole tracking with electronic programmable detonators.

Good slow motion videos of quarry and mine blasting. Is there danger involved ? Yes at times when supervisors under-estimate how far fly-rock can go.🤕
There can also be danger involved when one, or more blast holes over a foot (30 centimeter) in diameter and 18 meters deep is filled to about three meters from the top, with bosters near the bottom and top of the anfo (a nitrogen diesel mix) in the blasthole, tied together with cordtex explosive cord, and when for some reason it fail to detonate properly, or at all.! The diggers, often electric face-showels can't dig up the areas not properly blasted, so then a large bulldozer is often sent in to rip up the ground and expose the unexploded anfo, cordtex and boosters so the explosives can be neutralized.
The dozer operator will try to avoid ripping right through the explosives, but that still happen, and is not safe, but fortunately anfo is not so easy to detonate, but just the same, there is also the boosters and cordtex. Anyway, having survived doing that countless times there definitely are hazards involved. Should a hole containing cortex, boosters and anfo blow up under a buldozer you would be history. 🤤
Once the anfo is exposed the relevant supervisor would organize for a water truck to pump water into the blast- hole, the water dissolve the anfo and usually allow the remainding cortex and booster(s) to be retrived.🙄

Good compilation. But DANGEROUS? My arse it's dangerous. Dangerous to wankers who ignore well defined safety procedures, but walking along a footpath beside any road at any time is far more dangerous than is a controlled blast in a mine or quarry.

Hopefully, technology will develop to the point where no human involvement in the installation of the explosive by using automated methods/machines to do all the dirty work including ceanup/clearing the sight in case of unexploded material. They have equipment to dig deep holes; so why not continue to retrofit these same machines to complete the job in handling explosives, that way, an accidental discharge of explosive material only results in a really beat up machine that can be replaced, human life cannot once your gone. Make the machines pay all taxes and insurance too, it's hard out there for these hard working men!

4:45 is a really ugly blast. There's rock thrown all over the place. There's too much explosive. There should only ever be enough explosive used to break the rock appart. The first blast is a perfect demonstration of what a blast should look like. There's almost no rock thrown upward. It moves forward a bit, but not much. The 2:00 blast has quite a few blowouts. A blowout is a hole where the packing shoots out. This results in part of the energy of the blast shooting out of the hole instead of being contained and going into the rock.
I was thinking the same thing! My shots never have that much blowout.
Looks like not enough stemming. You want the force to go sideways and down, not up. The point is to break the rock, not throw it at passing planes.
