    The ridiculous fact is that here in Greece the base Model 16inch is 3000 Euros and the higher tier model is 3400 Euros. It is more economical to fly to the US and back and purchase it than to buy it from a local shop.

    Idk why but I love the Intel 16” MBP. It’s the only really good high-end MacBook, especially in terms of graphics, that Apple made ever since the mid-2015 (up until Apple silicon ofc). It’s also the last machine with this beautiful thin and lightweight design, which I believe Apple could have kept around due to the efficiency of Apple silicon.

    I went with 2.3GHz i9, 32GB of RAM, 4GB 5500 Radeon, 2TB SSD. THIS THING IS A BEAST OVER MY MID 2015 MACBOOK!!! I work in an IT department and run a lot of VMs for testing environments. Having the storage space without relatively paying an arm or leg is AMAZING! I love not having to lug around or connect external SSD anymore for some of my lesser used VMs. Windows 10 VMs are super smooth and responsive! Not only that but I've been slowly ripping all my DVDs and Blu-Ray discs and adding them to my NAS. This thing cuts through that task like butter!

    The 2.3GHZ->2.4GHZ isn't really about the % increase of performance, it is more to do with the 2.4GHZ being a better bin than the 2.3GHZ and thus they tend to have lower temps and thus throttle less.

If you for some reason had 256GB RAM it might use 220GB and so on... that doesn't mean you suddenly need more RAM, it just means it's using whatever it has.

    Thanks a lot Luke for doing all the work and sharing this video. Would you think that the i7 base model with 32gb RAM upgrade is enough for video editing or the i9 with base specs would be better? I would be using FCPX for editing FHD videos and probably a little bit of 4K. I also only do video edits as a hobby. I’m not much worried about the storage as I am planning to get an external SSD to save files. I just can’t decide if I should go for a 6 core i7 + 32gb ram or 8 core i9 + 16gb ram for my usage.
    Also the comparison you made with the graphics cards were pretty helpful, it at least made my decision on that part easier now.

      Well, you're not just paying for a regular piece of RAM. It's all soldered on, and only made if ordered, so you're paying for that too. You can't add more after the fact.

      @TimurTripp2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Scott__C Not a reason it can't be priced similarly to a regular stick of RAM (or slightly higher, say $200), as they are simply substituting one set of chips for another. Apple makes good products, but the $400 for 32 GB is pure greed while the GPU and 1 TB SSD prices are actually reasonable.

    • @MattJacques
      @MattJacques 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      64GB would typically only be beneficial for pretty niche applications like extremely high res, tons of layers in photoshop files or multi-cam, multi-timeline 4k video editing. While it may be true that more is always better, there are diminishing returns for sure, especially at the prices Apple charges. If you have a MBP now, open up Activity Monitor and you can see under the Memory tab how much RAM you're actually using at any given moment. From my research, I'd agree that 16GB is probably still enough for most situations, 32GB will be nice to have, but still not far from "essential" when 4k video editing or working on tons of photos, and 64GB would be wasted unless you're getting paid to do pretty complex graphical work where render times for BIG projects are critical.
      In short, if you have to ask, you probably don't need 64GB RAM.

    You can get the base model for $2100. It scores within a few fps in games to the higher model, and anywhere between 10 and 20% slower than a $3,000 to $3,600 machine. Not a huge performance difference unless you are literally rendering hours of videos every day. In that case, you should be looking at a desktop, anyway.
    If you edit video and keep you machines for 3-5 years, paying an extra grand for 32 gb of ram and the better video card is worth it. Getting more ram on a machine which is not ram-upgradable is probably the single best thing you can do (ability to replace vid card is is a tie). In a pinch, you could use a external gpu if rendering becomes that terrible.
    If you upgrade every other year or two, or have less stringent needs, the base model is the Macbook Pro 16" most people should get. On average, it has 90% of the performance for about 71% of the price, making it a much better deal. If you edit one or two 10 minute videos per week, the base model is the way to go.
    I typically have several apps and tabs open and I render video, but they are usually short videos in 1080p. But, I keep my machines for a long time. The last new laptop I bought was a 13" macbook pro in 2015. I plan on keeping this one for a long time. Unti it dies, basically. At least 5 years, more if possible. This will replace my iMac at home.
    I started with the upgraded model, opted for the maxed out 8 GB 5500 and 32 GB of ram, as well as 2 TB internal drive. I'll be using an attached external as a scratch drive for video editing, but I might want a 500 gb Bootcamp partition for the occasional file or apps for which I need windows.
    Whew. $3,600 is a lot of money. But I have an old 15 inch model that gets so hot you could fry an egg on to trade in, so the net cost will be around $2800. Still a lot of money. And it is gonna take them a month to get it to me.
    I could have a base model in my hands in a day. Lol. Patience is a virtue, I guess.
    Still, by the time the $2,100.00 model feels 'slow' -- the upgraded $3,000 + is going to as well. But an upgraded model will be easier to sell.
    I have no doubt that I could have, and probably should have, opted for the base model and saved myself $1,000+

    I kind of went nuts and got the secret $3899 config which Apple Stores sometimes carry in stock but don't advertise. If you start with the Space Gray 2799 i9 model and up the CPU to the 2.4 i9, RAM to 32GB, GPU to 5500M 8GB, and SSD to 2TB, (an $1100 increase) it may show up as in stock for same day pickup at your local Apple Stores. The main things I wanted were, like you, the RAM and GPU upgrades. The RAM because I will be running some VMs on it. I debated about the 64GB but that upgrade is insanely expensive, and it seems to take longer for those to ship. VMWare can manage memory quite efficiently so I think 32GB will be enough for me. The GPU because a secondary use for me will be gaming, and I felt a bit more comfortable with the 8GB for some future proofing. The other reasons I bought this config are: 1) I recently got a nice bonus from work, so I could afford it 2) my work also gets me a small discount on Apple stuff. I got the $3899 config for $3665. 3) I could pick this config up in store same day. I'm traveling for work shortly, and the delivery dates on custom models were close to the bone for my travel dates. I'm happy with it so far, but I haven't really put it through all its paces yet. The speakers are INSANE! I'm very picky about laptop speakers so I'm in heaven with this thing. I would have preferred not to pay for the upgraded 2.4GHz i9 over the 2.3 because, like you, I think it's a waste of money. However, with my work discount, combined with saving some sales tax by driving to an Apple store in the next county :-) the difference for the CPU upgrade ended up being close to $100 instead of $200, so for the convenience of having the machine immediately, I decided to eat that cost. BTW I just found your channel and I've found your videos informative and enjoyable! Thank you!

    Excellent video as always! I actually bought a 15 inch retina from 2014 but it doesn't quite cut the cake for me, especially considering the shoddy battery life (particularly considering mine had a new battery installed by Apple a couple of months ago), and the weight (that extra half pound definitely makes a difference). I actually have some money in my pocket for once and started getting spec boners again, but something told me that I personally would never use the extra power as the base model is super powerful already for someone that mainly does graphic design, heavy web browsing/multitasking, and the occasional 1080p video edit. This video only further helped clarify that, plus I love how they increased the screen size but kept the actual size of the computer the same, the good keyboard is back, and there is a physical escape key!!! Anyway, I'm gonna bite the bullet and drop 3 racks and some change (3000 CAD where I live plus a juicy 13% sales tax) but I think it will be well worth it and hopefully this machine will serve me for a long time.

Glad to see a proper base model that is actually worthy of the "PRO" name. Upgraded model is still worth it if you make a living with your machine and the more content you are able to produce, the more money you make, such as if you are doing videos on a daily basis, that extra time you save is money in your pocket over time.

    Took your recommend on that one, went in repasted the CPU/GPU with Corsair grease and blew out the dust bunnies, the machine runs awesome. The only thing im unsure about is wether or not it's better to go back to High Sierra to have native Nvidia driver support as it doesn't exist on Mojave and wont, and if there is really any impact in FCPX, which, it seems as though rendering times are just fine. 8gb of VRAM is a life saviour in 3D applications where project rely on GPU to have everything stored and instantly available. It's leaps ahead of 4gb, which was little even 2 years ago..
    32gb of VRAM is also great if you're doing heavy photo editing or large video productions or just have more production programs open at the same time. It's really easy to have 20+gb of RAM used, we're just used to 16gb and adapt around its limitations. So - I think his personal macbook is very well specked and it'll hold its value very well because of that.

    Great choice of specs, since specs are not user upgradeable (well, without some iFixit wizardry at least) it is best to go as high as you can afford as the laptop will stay with you for a while. I'm currently using an Early 2013 Macbookpro retina with i7 2.7ghz and 16gb of ram with 512gb storage so upgrade date is approaching. I'm a software engineer but I do some editing too so I might go for the same config you got or something similar (considering the 64gb option, but that might just be overkill unless editing 8k video or similar)
    Usually the cpu right before the maxed out one and at least 2x base ram and 2x base storage sounds like the sensible choice to make to be future proof for the next 5-6 years. Love your channel!!

My MBP16 gets up to 5k+ rpm fan speeds and 90C temps while simply playing a 4k video and browsing chrome on an external display. This should not be the norm. The jump to 20w consumption of the dgpu is a DEFECT.
