    You might find that a cheap circular polarising filter helps you reduce or even eliminate the glare you mention in this video. They're very handy when filming/photographing scenes with reflective surfaces such as glass or water, among other benefits. Really enjoy your videos!

    This is the Grande Taille case-size I take it?
    Always loved the Reverso - even back when I was a kid. Must be the Art Deco design and that seemingly simple gimmick of being able to flip the watch over.
    This thing is truly a functional, wearable piece of art, IMO.

    I'm such a fool. Whenever I heard the story of this watch before I thought they were talking about water polo. I get why this has such a haughty air about it now.
    I've seen a few of your videos now. I very much appreciate your storytelling and somewhat philosophical approach in covering these timepieces. You're one to watch in more than one way.

    nicely done. great to see this watch up close again - a friend of mine has a similar version of the duoface but I haven't seen him in 10 years. it was that watch that led me to eventually buying my own Reverso (I went with the more traditional Classique verson).

    I have a more recent Reference No. in steel with the button to set the hour on the top of the dial. It is a great timepiece. But a potential customer should try it on with a shirt. As the front dial is deeper than it seems on the website. So it isn‘t as easy to put the Reverso under the sleeves as it seems. But otherwise, I love wearing my Duoface and winding it.

    Hello, I have the same watch but in SS and I'm finding it is running approx +20 seconds a day. Do you have any comments about the watch's resistance to magnetism? Or its robustness / shock resistance in everyday wear? Thank you - great video!

    • @sethd8548
      @sethd8548 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's quite likely yours has been magnetized. My Reverso's suffer from the as well. The good news is that it's easy to demagnetize these watches, either by going directly to a JLC boutique or you can buy one.

      Like you, I love the aesthetic of these JLCs and have looked at the alternatives. Although Seiko produce some watches along these lines, up close they just don't cut it (and most of them have 'quartz' written on the dial, Ugh!).
      Take a look at the Michel Herbelin 17468. I found one of these by accident in a local watch shop and was knocked out by the finish, proportions and design.
      Mine has 1930's style 'arabic' numerals, a solid steel case, sapphire crystal, onion crown, a swiss quartz movement but with no second-hand. They are made in France.
      Best budget watch of this type on the market inmho.
      The dial is exquisite, with vertical brushing inside the chapter ring, and radial brushing outside. Very subtle.

    • @WondersofWatchdom
      @WondersofWatchdom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      At JLC, the purchaser of each watch is registered in a log. So, by knowing the serial number you also know the owner. The serial number is used for everything from servicing to ordering new straps. Thanks for asking!

    A dual time zone watch which is only able to set the hour hands separately from each other and not the minute hands. Ironic, considering the original purpose of the watch stems from British officers in India, which is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of GMT. Although I suppose that it does not matter, as the price is so high that no modern day member of the military would ever be able to afford anything manufactured by this company.

    • @MartinIrwin
      @MartinIrwin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Original had a steel back, and was one watch/time zone.

    • @MartinIrwin

      An officer in the Army can afford this.

    • @bornfree3963
      @bornfree3963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Military juntas would strongly disagree!

    • @manuel_winde
      @manuel_winde 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The duoface wasn’t released until 1994, not all India is 5:30 ahead and almost anyone in the British military could afford a JLC if they really wanted it - there are plenty available for under £1000 which with 0% credit would be paid off in under a year for a relatively small monthly sum.
      But apart from that you’re right 😂

    you covered up the serial number.
    does the watch maker have a way to trace the serial number to the owner?
    if you got the watch second hand not via the manufacturer then there should not be any problem with showing the serial number unless.
    1. you bought it from a very exclusive watch dealer that logs the serial number.
    2. or you want to protect the privacy of the previous owner(s).
    3. or the serial number contains offensive digits combination such as 69 or 31.
    4. or the serial number is close enough to your social security or other number that the could guessed and used for identity theft.

    • @WondersofWatchdom
      @WondersofWatchdom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The serial number is logged/recorded at JLC to the owner, and used for things like warranty work and service records. For most JLC watches you know the full history of the watch.

    • @WondersofWatchdom
      @WondersofWatchdom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently, it was considered bad manners to take off a watch while playing polo, because that meant you weren't wealthy enough to not care about it. Flipping it over became a good compromise. You can't make this stuff up!

    The fact that the manufacture still hangs its hat on this painfully tired model, in all its iterations, is depressing. I interviewed the former CEO, Jérôme Lambert back in 2013, and we discussed a possible future where this model would be retired. At the time, some very exciting and complicated novelties seemed to hint at a brighter future. Unfortunately, he had the personality of a candle, so he din't make for very entertaining copy. But he did have a vision for the manufacture that was more forward thinking. Alas, his tenure was cut short and JLC has held onto its more stayed patrimony but for two models in their collection.

    • @WondersofWatchdom
      @WondersofWatchdom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      JLC will never retire a signature model that sells well, and has been in style for 90 years. Calling it "tired" is a bit like calling the Eiffel Tower "tired."

      @bornfree3963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure it's logical, people everywhere know what night and day is, where as AM/PM is not universal, can be confused as a frequent band on the radio. lol

    • @carllange3950
      @carllange3950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bornfree3963 Do you refer to the time from midnight to noon as ‘NIGHT’ and from noon to midnight as ‘DAY’ ? I have seen pictures of other versions of the Duoface where the 24 hour sub-dial has a lighter background from 0600 to 1800 to designate daylight hours and the the text blocks say ‘TRAVEL’ and ‘TIME’. I have seen pictures of a Reverso Monoface version which had a travel time hand on the main 12 hour dial with a window showing AM/PM for the travel time. I stand by my statement. Sometimes JLC designers get it right and sometimes they don’t. AM/PM is a precise definition, even though it is more commonly used in English speaking countries. If ‘DAY’ was positioned over 1200 and ‘NIGHT’ was positioned over 2400, then they would be logically placed.
