There another song from the same album, "Reuben James" .a song which I like just as well as this one. These song were both released while Kenny was the First Edition . "Ruby" was written by the late great Mel Tillis and Barry Etris and Alex Harvey wrote "Rueben".

Thanks so much Penny for this super trip down memory lane. I hadn't heard this one in a donkey's age. Amusing factoid - this song was written by Mel Tillis and first recorded by Waylon! It was a big crossover hit for Kenny who was trying to take The First Edition in a more country direction. Thanks Don for the awesome reaction!

Thanks Penny for this great request. Kenny was a great artist and had a unique way of telling. I saw Kenny in concert a few times. One of his best story songs or make you feel good songs is "The Greatest" Thanks for your reaction Don

@jcat__ Hi Jeff - I also loved "The Greatest"! Captured the imagination of a young boy and his dreams - with a great twist at the end!

This was based on a true story. Mel Tillis as a boy had a neighbor crippled in the pacific in ww2 ( crazy Asian war). He used to hear them fighting. The guy always accusing Ruby of cheating. Mel wrote in in his car on the way home after hearing Johnny Cash sing Don't take your guns to town, on the radio. 1966 or 67?

There's also one line where he said that he's heard people say that he won't be around much longer ... assuming he meant that she doesn't care as long as she gets what she wants ... which makes it even sadder, I think.

Written and recorded by Mel Tillis, then Kenny Rogers and the First Edition covered and smashed it.

Thanks Penny, for this wonderful (but painful) request -- and Don for your thoughtful reaction. This song was released on the 4th or 5th album from Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. "Ruby" was first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1966. Johnny Darrell reached number nine on the country charts with the song in 1967, and Kenny Rogers and The First Edition released it in 1969. It was (and still is) an awesome album!
p.s. Thanks, Don, for not rating this one. It hits too close to home for me - as I related to "montauked" (aka Edward Ammon)

Thank you Penny. Great request. Unique instrumentation. His emotions in this song ran the gamut between “I’d put her in the ground”, to “For God’s sakes, turn around”. An extremely tough situation for both of them. Another great reaction by Don. If someone ever asked me, who is the most compassionate person I knew, my answer would have to be you my friend.

@montauked17 Hi Ed - agreed! Great song and I can relate. My late husband served in Vietnam, as well as two of my brothers and a brother-in-law; two other brother served in The Korean War. Getting that "Greetings, from The President of the United States" letter made all our hearts sink. I just know they were all different when they came home. They never talked about it, but when you're drafted and face what they did in Vietnam (at 18 yrs old!) and then try to come home to "regular life" - it's just almost impossible to make a normal transition (they all had their girls (and me) when they left and married them when they came home). They all went to college with the help of "The GI Bill", while adapting and keeping the relationship intact. It takes time and a lot of love, patience and healing time - for themselves and each other along with their/our relationship. We lost them all to cancer between 33-63 yrs of age. A salute to all who served - willingly or not. (I apologize, Ed - I wrote a novel. Thanks for being a great listener!)

Good Sunday morning Phyllis. I am a good listener. I do not want you to apologize, ever, for any of your postings. I fully understand your story that you had to put out there. I was never in combat, but I can’t begin to imagine the horror of it all. All soldiers come home broken one way or another. Why we keep fighting each other, God only knows. I am happy you posted. It had been awhile for you and I was hoping that you were OK. Be well my friend.

This song is by Kenny when he was singing with a group called The First Edition. They were not really a country group, more cross over. This song was their first to make the country chart. It made it to number 39. On the pop chart, it went to #6.

Oh wow. I'm 44 now and I don't think I've heard this song since I lived in Louisiana and I was only 3 or 4 years old at the time. I know I've heard the chorus, and it makes me think of Louisiana. But it's weird because, other than that, it doesn't sound even remotely familiar. But I swear I've heard this song before and it just, takes me back. Man. It's crazy how far back in time a song can take you.

Thanks great reaction Don for the great reaction this is the first is the first song I remember Kenny sing . Saddens me now thinking he is a war veteran not only her husband and she feels she needs to cheat on him I am sure it angers him hence the lyrics about the gun and putting her in the ground .

To me, the best part of this song is its melodic and instrumental simplicity. The sparse, almost-bluegrass orchestration works so well with the straightforward lyrics. I think the entire accompaniment consists of bass, acoustic guitar(s?) and snare and bass drums.
