Hello Pete, nice video's, love it, thanks for making them. Question, I have two professional painting machines, the hvlp Wagner CF5000 and the Wagner 350M control pro, with HEA technology, 55% less overspray. I like to spray in houses were peopke already moved in, so I'm affraid for overspray. Do you also spray in such a situation and how much do you have to cover as protection for the overspray? I was so happy when I saw a new video emerge!...I never new I would ever be so passionate about spraying and the enjoyment I get out of these videos, thanks Pete for all your well thought methodologies on the tapes and paint!...I even watch these over and over again cause of the music and you make these vids so interesting...Hi from New Zealand
Hey bud, im laughing at some of the comments here, peole love hating. Good video, i spray heaps and for decades and this technique is handy for certain situations.
Hey buddy, thanks for the support 🙏 it’s good to have options - to mask up, or not mask up and remove a door.. in this example the carpentry / hinges were such poor quality it saved a lot of hassle by masking up 👍😄 Keep in touch..regards Pete
Nicely presented. Two things struck me as a relatively new user of a Graco handheld. I find removing doors takes ~5 minutes. In the building I am doing now there are 8 panel doors, three sets of sliders, and two folding sets. For me, it is easier with less overspray dust to set them outside. I also noticed you break a rule I learned the hard way: shoot 90 degrees to the surface painted. Otherwise, you can easily 'push paint into undesirably thick waves. I get a little bit of extra exercise doing deep knee bends to hold the angle; It's not only my right bicep that gets a workout. Cheers. Jim
Hey buddy.. yeah it’s AkzoNobel WP136.. over very well prepped oil based.. its one of my favourite primers.. high build, edge sealing, sands super smooth, an awesome base for the Aqualit enamel topcoat.. regards Pete
The walls and ceilings are not protected from the spraying. How do you treat them later to avoid any flashing from the wood paint? If I spray the walls with matte paint later, will the matte paint cover the wood paint?
5.33 taping the door closed can be a bit awkward as the door sometimes wants to open on its own. At this stage. I normally slip a doorstop underneath it and pull the door towards myself just to keep it in place while I mask it shut then remove just before spraying…top tip from the fella with all the gear and no idea 🤙🏻🤙🏻😂😂
Great video Pete. I absolutely love spraying and whenever i can, i will. I sometimes think it feels like cheating but had a h,s&l a few weeks ago that just became obvious a day or two into prep i wasn't going to be able to spray. Customers were in and out, up and down, back and forth, every which way but loose. One of the drawbacks of people working from home more and more. Definitely need a quiet house to mask doors up! 😂
I can honestly say I’ve never had any issue with WP136 - it’s an acrylic base so has plenty of grip, - in my opinion it’s equal to any ‘adhesion primer’.. I actually feel the term adhesion primer is cleverly marketed off the back off traditional solvent primers / topcoat and those looking for new generation WB products to grip to old solvent 🤔 so yeah, I do very much rate AkzoNobel WP136 primer 👍 regards Pete 💙💯
If the walls were white but the woodwork a dark colour (grey for example), would you still spray the woodwork first letting it overlap on to the walls like you do here, or would you spray the white walls first then mask them off and spray the dark woodwork last?
Hi Joe, yeah I would still spray the woodwork first, the white emulsion will cover the (darker) overspray 👍 ..you could give the overspray area a quick key / sand to assist the process 👏👏👏 ..hope this helps, all the best my friend.. regards Pete
morning mate how is life treating you ... cracking video and advice ... i done exaclty the same system but i have to do 5 doors but with hvlp i find you have more control less over spray but every one is diffrent .. spraying is a game changer ...your videos change my life and many others out there keep up your hard work mate 💪🔥

@bootsmclaughlin1438 Ah I get what you’re saying.. Cam you get Johnstones?.. In my brush / roller days I was always a fan of Aqua Satin and it’s successor Aqua Guard.. I’m not entirely sure how it sprays airless - perhaps I can film a test 🤔 I’ll make a note 👍
I’m new to spraying, got myself a gx21df, plan on just starting with ceilings at first to get used to it all, would I be able to keep paint (ar2) in the machine all the time? I’d be doing a few ceilings a week. Also any other tips would be greatly appreciated! Keep up the good work, learnt so much from your videos already! Gods work!!
Hi Greg, great news you’re taking your first steps into spraying, exciting times ahead 👏👏👏 ..Good idea to start with spraying ceilings, that’s my recommendation to anyone new to airless spraying, to build up confidence.. spraying a ceiling is pretty much comparable to rolling a ceiling in terms of the protection required for the floors and any furniture.. and the benefits are another level, beautiful flat / white ceiling, flawless, quicker and far less laborious on the body.. here’s some pointers.. Using AR2 add a good splash of water and mix well into the paint in the hopper.. use a Graco LP 515 (you’ll gain more control with less fluid output Vs a 517).. move relatively quick (you can’t comprehend how quick paint comes out of an airless spray gun 😆).. oh and pressure will be approx 1900 psi.. test first on brown paper, like you see in all my videos.. start with pressure at around 1500, test and you’ll have tails, then 1700, test again, it will improve.. you’ll probably be at 1900 with AR2 and a drop of water.. but always do a test piece on paper before connecting spraying.. good look, and keep in touch. I’m happy to help and advise if I can.. regards Pete 🙏
Hello my friend.. I take care of the hinge side as part of the room decoration.. lounge, bedroom, etc.. and to be honest I would take the door off to allow for easy access spraying the whole door.. this video, when completing a HSL / 10 doors in this example, this masking technique speeds up the process to spray all areas internal to the HSL.. otherwise, yeah the hinge side would have to be completed by hand, you simply can’t get to it, with ease if spraying and not removing the door 👍 keep in touch, happy to help if I can.. regards Pete
Great informative video… invaluable for anyone learning how to spray or thinking of how to tackle tricky jobs… the production value is also great 👏🏼 well-done ❤
Nicely done Pete. This is exactly how I’ve been having to work on pretty much all my spraying jobs, i don’t always have the luxury of being able to take doors off and stack them up in another room. One thing I’ve not tried yet, is the KIP tapes? How do you rate them? I’ve become quite accustomed to the 308 fflp tips, as I find they leave a lovely finish 🙃 I’d even put my arse on the line here and, say the finis is very close to what you’d expect from HVLP? Again nicely put together, i hope you and the family are well. Keep up the good work, I couldn’t imagine how much work and effort goes into making these videos
Hi James, yeah it can be challenging preparing 10 or so doors when completing a hall, stairs and landing.. then if the hinges / screws are a problem 🙈 ..You’re right the quality of FF LP tips has bridged the gap on HVLP 👏👏👏 ..Certainly give Kip a go, I’d be interested to get your feedback 👍 ..Regards Pete
@@PaintHQ it certainly can have its challenges but, it’s all worth the effort in the end as the finish is immaculate and, you only have to tape up once. Sometimes i brush back edges if i need too prior to spraying. I’ll give the KIP a go? I know it’s been around for an age, but it wasn’t as accessible for me back in the days when I’d pop into say brewers or something.
Have you ever used johnstones water based gloss Pete? Used it today for the first time with my new graco gx21FF from sprayman and the FFLP210 tip to spray a staircase. The paint seemed really thin and went on really thick at around 800psi and I think because of this there were a few big drips in places. Probably just takes practise over time but do you think I needed to move faster to prevent something this from happening? Thanks.
Hi Kevin, apologies for my delayed reply, I will always get back to you.. I’m always happy to help.. I’ve not worsted Johnstones Aqua, but was always a fan in my brush / roller days 👍 ..I have heard reports about it not spraying well, but more directed to HVLP if I recall.. going on what you say about it being thin (low viscosity), I can tell you’re problem.. you’re right, one ‘fi would be to move quicker 👍 ..or if you went to a 310, the paint distributes wider over 6”, with the same .010 flow rate.. or you might get away using a 208, (or 308).. the .008 will be much less flow Vs .010 ..once you grasp that principle, the ‘trick’ to airless spraying sinks home.. so yeah you can use a 210 but move much quicker.. a 208 could work.. I do very much like using .008 tips but I spray a lot of AkzoNobel waterborne low viscosity paint (spray only).. I often list the paints I’m spraying in the video description.. keep in touch, happy to help you my friend 💙 regards Pete
@@PaintHQ great thanks pete. makes a lot sense actually, keep the thicker paints with the .010+ tip orifices and the thinner paints with the smaller numbered tips. I think building a collection of tips and trying them over time will give you the experience needed to tackle the job in the best way possible with the paint you are using. It will just be become a natural quick selection of the best combination tip and paint eventually.
Hi Kevin, you’re spot on.. I don’t want to say you need to go out and buy a load of tips.. what happens, you have about 4 or 5 go to tips.. keeping a simple spreadsheet on your phone helps.. I use google sheets, it’s a free app, part of google drive.. create a few columns and notes how a paint sprays 👍😆
hi Keven,i had the simmilar problem to you aswell, and i was using the same paints, like pete said with undercoat use a 208/210 spray tip thined out slightly in the hopper, with the gloss a 212 works well again slightly thinned nothing mad red tip filter,it may also get clogged up a tiny bit and this actually helps when spraying with gloss. On a standard spindel aim for about 1-2 scd each side depending on what type they are.1800psi again for both paints. i have the gx21 and now the 390 and the 390 sprays really good but both are good sprayers. Also another tip, dont spray it like you would paint it with a roller or brush just go over it and move on! videos still going good pete 🤘
Hi. I'm going to copy your brilliant tutorial. Try a 4 inch roller up the pre taped paper or even drop cloth when you use. Acts as a dispenser and makes it easy to use. I use foam sleeve mostly but whatever fits inside roll. Good to catch up with at show. :) Regards. W
Hey Wayne, thank you so much for the kind words and great tip.. always a pleasure talking to you, you’re a very knowledgeable and experienced P&D.. we should meet up more often 😆 ..all the best my friend, keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete
Thank you my friend.. it was a hall stairs landing project, if I recall 10 doors in total, I finished the doors over 2 days.. upstairs, primed and top coated and masking off then downstairs the next day 👍 it’s a quick masking process, could be done in a day (10 doors), but it is nice to take the pressure off 😆 ..regards Pete
Hey Julian, AkzoNobel it’s my go to material to prime and topcoat internal joinery.. it atomises and sprays so easily, it’s a joy to spray.. just a couple of things to be aware, one is to minimise the use of caulk, let any caulk fully cure and potentially spray a light coat of BIN / shellac (using a rattle can).. otherwise you could risk a little crazing.. also the atomisation is so fine, like all spraying it does cause a ‘dust’.. easily to vacuum up, but like all spraying, dust is the enemy.. I do wholeheartedly rate the products, cost effective too.. if you look in this video description, there’s links to the products and a PAINTHQ discount code.. not sure if I list my regular high build primer, that’s WP136.. the WP198 is for tannin / stain blocking / can also be used on exteriors.. WP136’i use all the time internally, dries super quick 👍 ..regards Pete
Sorry, realised I was only priming the doors in this video.. here’s the details.. AkzoNobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Waterborne Enamel Topcoat holmanpaints.co.uk/interior-wood/169-akzo-nobel-aqualit-waterborne-enamel-topcoat.html ➡️ Holman Specialist Paints 🌐 holmanpaints.co.uk/ ☎️ +44 1793 511537 👉 discount code.. PAINTHQ Code works on all paints. I get my Tikkurila Optiva Primer for priming fresh plaster with acrylic, sprays lovely.. I’ve used Holmans for years, really friendly and knowledgeable and I rate their colour matching (off any chart) 👏👏👏
Why are you applying 2 coats of primer to a previously painted door? I would just scuff sand and spray 1 coat of finish, 2 coats if the color change was dramatic
appreciate your input my friend.. I'm spraying a high build, very fast drying, industrial waterborne material.. You're right the doors were of a good standard beforehand, but the frames / trim needed lots of prep, filling, more sanding.. 2 coats of high build with a denib between produced a silky smooth finish for the topcoats.. like I say it all dried very quick so wasn't a problem.. thanks again, keep in touch.. regards Pete
It’s a waterborne high build primer by AkzoNobel (WP136).. low viscosity / spray only, goes through .008 tips beautifully at very low pressure .. I can send you a link if you’re interested.. regards Pete
Hi Pete, Another great video as always. I'm a Decorator of 30 yrs experience and just beginning my spray journey. How do you go about spraying internal timber windows? Do you remove the openers? Cheers - keep the videos coming, very informative 👍
Hello my friend, really appreciate your kind words of support.. that’s a good question, In fact I do have footage spraying internal hardwood windows anthracite.. if I recall I created a TH-cam short video, with the possibility of creating a feature video in future.. i did consider removing the openings, but priming on one day and topcoats the next, I didn’t feel it feasible to leave the openings off.. I basically masked in a very similar way to how I demonstrated spraying the doors in this video.. I took the window furniture off and propped the window open with a 6” prop and masked the edges and opening, tapering off in ‘triangle shapes’ just like the door masking.. this allowed me to spray the entire internal window frame without spray going outside or on the external parts of the frame.. if that makes sense 😆 ..it’s not too difficult, just a little thought but it’s worth it.. keep in touch, happy to help and advise if I can.. take care.. Pete
The screws on these hinges were worn, would be really problematic to remove.. plus I was spraying 10 frames, can be tricky to manoeuvre / store that amount of doors in an occupied property.. thanks for your input my friend.. regards Pete 💙💯
😄🙏 ..11 doors and 3 hinges per door as part of a Hall Stairs Landing project - takes some storing those doors in an occupied house, coupled with them being National Hickman hinges (some broken) - they’re a pain to setup ..Otherwise, yeah I take your point 💙💯 Regards Pete
We just charge say per door ect then we decide if we remove, paint by hand or mask n spray and has no effect on price. Also we do work on lots of high end houses and yes the want a auto level finish, but they will pay for it by choice.
Hey Marius, thank you buddy.. sure, do you mean spraying a ‘durable’ emulsion?.. in this video below from 8:30 onwards I’m spraying a durable acrylic matt by Johnstones (PPG), it’s a high viscosity / thick material so will take thinning by 10%.. then I spray with a Graco FF LP 514, speed 7 👍 th-cam.com/video/Tjay5bIN1zU/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps, keep in touch.. regards Pete 🙏

Hey Chris - you’re a diamond, thanks for your input and sharing your experience 🙏 Hope you’re keeping well my friend 💙 ..Regards Pete
Hi.
I'm going to copy your brilliant tutorial.
Try a 4 inch roller up the pre taped paper or even drop cloth when you use. Acts as a dispenser and makes it easy to use. I use foam sleeve mostly but whatever fits inside roll.
Good to catch up with at show. :)
Regards.

Hey Wayne, thank you so much for the kind words and great tip.. always a pleasure talking to you, you’re a very knowledgeable and experienced P&D.. we should meet up more often 😆 ..all the best my friend, keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete
Nice! Have you finished one door in that day?
Thank you my friend.. it was a hall stairs landing project, if I recall 10 doors in total, I finished the doors over 2 days.. upstairs, primed and top coated and masking off then downstairs the next day 👍 it’s a quick masking process, could be done in a day (10 doors), but it is nice to take the pressure off 😆 ..regards Pete
Great Video Thanks a Lot
Thank you Sergio, you’re so kind.. happy to help and advise if I can 🙏👍
How did you get on with the water based enamel form akzonobel mate
Cheer Pete I will check it out as I have an account at dulux but everyone is banging on about tikkurila etc 🙄
What’s the top coat code Pete please
Sorry, realised I was only priming the doors in this video.. here’s the details..
AkzoNobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Waterborne Enamel Topcoat

👉 discount code.. PAINTHQ
Code works on all paints. I get my Tikkurila Optiva Primer for priming fresh plaster with acrylic, sprays lovely.. I’ve used Holmans for years, really friendly and knowledgeable and I rate their colour matching (off any chart) 👏👏👏
Hi Pete I have just set up my hopper with my 390, do you use the whip hose with emulsion aswell ?
Hi is Akzonoble as good as isomat & tikkurila?
Very good 👏
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback 🙏
is that oil primer?
It’s a waterborne high build primer by AkzoNobel (WP136).. low viscosity / spray only, goes through .008 tips beautifully at very low pressure .. I can send you a link if you’re interested.. regards Pete
@@PaintHQ I trust oil primer, and I think it might be better and you can use any top coat you want on it.
Thank you my friend, I appreciate you sharing your experience 💯 regards Pete
Respect 🇺🇸
Thank you my brother 🇺🇸💙
Muy bueno yo no hablo inglés pero me encantan tus videos
Gracias hermano mío, agradezco tus amables palabras... saludos Pete 💙💯
Always quality work pete and great vid 👍🏻
Thank you Andrew 🙏 ..Appreciate the support 💯
Hi Pete,
Another great video as always.
I took the window furniture off and propped the window open with a 6” prop and masked the edges and opening, tapering off in ‘triangle shapes’ just like the door masking.. this allowed me to spray the entire internal window frame without spray going outside or on the external parts of the frame.. if that makes sense 😆 ..it’s not too difficult, just a little thought but it’s worth it.. keep in touch, happy to help and advise if I can.. take care.. Pete
@@PaintHQ thank you for the reply. It does make sense - it's how I thought it would be done. But you have to ask!
No problem at all my friend, good lock.. let me know how it goes 🙏 regards Pete
Made me just pull the door off. 9 screws, done.
The screws on these hinges were worn, would be really problematic to remove.. plus I was spraying 10 frames, can be tricky to manoeuvre / store that amount of doors in an occupied property.. thanks for your input my friend.. regards Pete 💙💯
Swap out hinges for old crappy ones, spray, then swap back.
Thanks for your input and sharing your experience Sam.. keep in touch 🙏 regards Pete
My god who installed that door
The builders.. part of a new build / housing estate
The home owner must pay a pretty penny for all that work, when you can just remove the door and hinges. It's a bloody door, not a car.
@adxn7946 Exactly my friend, that’s how I do it.. Thanks for sharing your insight 🙏 Regards Pete 💙💯
Painting has just died
Nah, I have the upmost respect for the craft and skill using a quality paint brush 🎨😆
@englishdwcorator Would literally be on our 8th door by the time he’s finished masking 😂 He’d get the sack if he was with me!
@Ellis87 😂🙏💙💯
We spray whole wood work in that time he just wasted to covered one door
Thanks for your feedback my friend.. regards Pete
It feels like it would be faster to just remove the door
just take the door of surely that's easier
I think it is easier for me to just remove the door lol
Why not? Remove two pins, you're done.
Nice job👌. What about Graco ultra max tips to washable paint?🪜
Hey Marius, thank you buddy.. sure, do you mean spraying a ‘durable’ emulsion?.. in this video below from 8:30 onwards I’m spraying a durable acrylic matt by Johnstones (PPG), it’s a high viscosity / thick material so will take thinning by 10%.. then I spray with a Graco FF LP 514, speed 7 👍
