about the gold album stamp on the album - originally a gold album was one that sold one million dollars worth at wholesale price, usually about 1/3 retail. in 1975 a gold album became one that sold 500,000 copies. I remember that album with the stamp on it from the original days, as well as on beatles VI
I got "Yesterday and Today" as a teenager back in the mid 70s. It's weird because back then you could only get the U.S. versions of the albums. I remember being surprised at how different albums like Rubber Soul were in their U.S. versions.
Hi Matt, great video. You made me check out my record and CD Beatles collection again. I have the original LP release of Yesterday and Today from the sixties, but no CD. I will see if I can still find a copy. It would also be great to see a reissue of the LP. Enjoy the summer and thanks for the video. Brian.
Hey Brian, that's fantastic that you have an original! Is there a butcher cover lurking under the trunk cover somewhere? Haha! I appreciate you stopping by and checking out the video. All the best and have a great summer of yourself, Matt
When I was young, all I knew were the American releases. I didn't become fully acquainted with the real albums until the 2009 remasters. When The 2014 American cds came out, the only three I purchased were Meet The Beatles (my first experience with a Beatles album,) Hey Jude (the last Beatles album I bought upon release,) and Yesterday-Today (my favorite non-apple Beatles album). I also have a few oddities in my way less than extensive collection. These little bootleg gems were acquired via friend who didn't know what he had. Mostly Russian, but I got one which looks to be a homemade bootleg: Yesterday and Today with the American Revolver on a single cd. Judging from the sleeve and disc cover, it's an Ampex reel to reel transfer.
Hey Fred, thanks for stopping by and checking out my video. Also I appreciate all the great information you provided about your history with some of the Beatles us albums. I feel the same way you do, that is, I grew up with those albums and they mean a lot to me. But I still like the UK releases as well. All the best to you and take care, Matt
Hey James, yes sir, you are so right! This is a cool album. Hodgepodge or not, it's a great rocking album! And who cares about the whole butcher cover controversy. Cover or not it's fabulous! Take care buddy, Matt
Hey Edward! I can't thank you enough for checking out my older videos. I really appreciate it. It's nice to know there still people out there who like checking out my older stuff. All the best to you and glad you enjoyed this one. Take care, Matt
Hi Matt. Theories aside - John Lennon pretty much said the butcher cover was the idea of the photographer who took the shot... that he was a surrealist and took all sorts of odd and risqué photos. As for the album itself, I love it! Great track selection. Hey - I have the phony version with the butcher cover too but my record inside is standard black.
Hey Joe, and thanks for responding. Yeah you're making a lot of sense. Pretty much everyone here that has commented about it said the same thing, that it was an artistic statement more than anything else. That makes sense. Yeah folks are telling me that my fake butcher is probably a Japanese issue. That also makes sense. Thanks again for stopping by and it was a pleasure talking to you earlier today. All the best, Matt
Hi Matt! Great video about the “Yesterday And Today” album. I hope you get a real Butcher album someday. That Stereo Record you showed us West Coast Pressing. Great Beatles Japan T shirt. I love that one. Take care Matt
Hey Marv, thanks for the great information. So what you're saying is that this stereo rainbow swirl copy with the gold record seal is from the West Coast? Okay that sounds good to me. Thanks again im glad you like my Budokan Beatles t-shirt! All the best, Matt
I enjoyed your enthusiasm. It shows just how much you enjoy the music and the history and the fun you had. (And... that is a lot of ands!) (And I love her) Thanx! Enjoyable video. 🌈
As an 11 year old whose parents listened to classical music, I was quite confused. Hearing the Beatles for the first time with this song on the radio, opened up whole new vistas.
It's unfortunate Capitol felt that Beatles albums should not play longer than 30 minutes. My brother gave me Beatles Greatest Hits Vol 2 on Capitol label as a Christmas present in 1965, which he bought in Melbourne. On the back cover was photos of other Beatles albums. One of them was Yesterday and Today. This was almost 3 years before Hey Jude.
I have a bunch of Canadian variations on this one and a Japanese version. I think that's it. It's too bad they didn't put Paperback Writer and Rain on it instead of the three Revolver tracks. That way we would have had two outstanding albums in N.A.
Hey Paul, very awesome that you have multiple variations, especially the Canadian editions. Overall I think it's a great little album. And you are exactly right, I wish Paperback Writer and Rain were on it! Take care my friend, Matt
I too wondered why they didn't put the Paperback Writer/Rain single on this. The single was Released in May 1966 so they could have easily done it and maybe one song from UK Revolver..and then the US Revolver would have been better and the Y&T would have been better. Oh Well..
The unique characteristics of this LP are the remixed mono versions of the Lennon songs on the early Capitol versions vs. the stereo versions of the same songs on some of the later Apple versions of the vinyl.
The original stereo copies of the LP had those three mono mixes converted to their horrid Duophonic fake stereo process. At the time Revolver was released Capitol replaced those three with true stereo mixes but only on the reel to reel copies. I believe they replaced them all on cassette and vinyl as time went on.
Revolver was my first one..around 1970. Getting each new Beatle's album was just such a amazing thing..Hey Jude etc, they all changed their looks so dramatically, yet, it was still them somehow in the music. Just pure magic. Still have the Yesterday and Today album somewhere..mine was Captiol i think.
Hey Mike, wow funny we were both thinking about this album at the same time! And you're so very right, it is a fun album to listen to. All the best, Matt
This is the first of your videos I've watched -- and I really enjoyed it. You do a great job in talking about this album -- and you say many of the same things I would have said about the North American version of REVOLVER (I'm Canadian but after the band's first three unique versions of Beatles albums were released here by Capitol Canada, the albums we got were simply the USA versions). I remember looking at the song lineup on the back of the album and being shocked that John had fallen into third place, behind George, in the number of his songs on that album. Like you, I hadn't realized that we were getting different versions of the albums than what The Beatles were producing in the UK, and that three John sons were released on this Capitol creation. But I still have all my original vinyl LP's -- including the first three Capitol Canada albums ("BEATLEMANIA - WITH THE BEATLES", "TWIST AND SHOUT", "LONG TALL SALLY")
Hello John, and welcome, welcome, welcome! So happy you found my channel and checked it out. Yes the Canadian and United States releases from Capitol are very interesting. And I must say one of my next adventures will be to try to find the three Canadian albums I do not have... which are, beatlemania, Twist and Shout, and Long Tall Sally. Those albums look so cool! Thanks again, take care, Matt
Watching in 2021, wouldn't it be great if Capitol released a vinyl reissue of Yesterday and Today - WITH the butcher cover?!?!?!? AND - using the original CAPITOL masters.
I loved your discussion and sharing your memories about this album. I became a Beatles fan fairly recently so I have owned this album for maybe a year and a half. In my opinion this is a very strong album. I love it. You are right that the strength of this album weakens the US version of Revolver. Putting Drive My Car on this album strengthens the US version of Rubber Soul imo. I personally like I've Just Seen A Face better as the opener. Take care.
Howdy Melinda, and thanks for stopping by. You are so right, this is a very solid album. Sometimes the whole butcher cover controversy overshadows this fact. Some people here have mentioned that perhaps if they had included Paperback Writer, rain, and maybe even I'm down, this would have made for an even better album. Then they could have saved the three John Lennon revolver songs for revolver. But I like your thoughts on this. And I also agree with you about Rubber Soul. My favorite version of Rubber Soul has always been the US, more folksy Edition. So we agree on many points here. All the best to you and take care. By the way, I do enjoy your videos very much! Keep doing what you're doing, great job! All the best, Matt
Hi Matt . Sorry it has taking me so long to get to this my friend . But I am home now and playing catch up and just starting to do video as well . Great to be back home . But your video was a lot of fun to watch . And very well done !!!! I do have a lot of vinyl copies …. I do feel like you it is a forgotten lp . Great video thank you for doing this !!! Take care and God bless you !!!!!!
Hey Brad! Happy happy joy joy! I sent you a similar message at your last video, the first one when you got home, which by the way I loved! And that is that I am so happy for you and your wife that you are finally home. Now it is time to relax, get better, enjoy your music, and have fun with your channel and videos. Such a happy time to see you home. Thank you so much for checking out my latest video as always I appreciate it very much. You take care and I am sure we will talk soon my friend. Bless you and your wife, Matt
I've got a Beatles record that I have never known of any others existing, though there may be more out there. It seems like a bootleg, with a handwritten center label and mixes that I've only otherwise heard on Anthology. It was given to me by my mother's late 2nd husband who got it at a flea market when he was younger (1970s?). It's something any Beatles fan would appreciate and I feel fortunate to have.
Hi Phillip, I'm not sure what exactly you have there, but it sounds like it is very collectible and rare. Hang on to it! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my channel. I truly appreciate it. All the best to you, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 , Thanks. I grew up listening to the Beatles, since my mom grew up during that era and was a Beatles fan. I'd be happy to share photos of the record in question, if you'd be interested in seeing it.
Darn TH-cam! I'm just now seeing this video Matt. Yesterday and Today has always been my favorite Capitol Beatles album. It's filled with some of my favorite Beatles songs of all time like Yesterday, Nowhere Man, Day Tripper and And Your Bird Can Sing just to name a few. And I don't know why they put out the Butcher Cover, but I wouldn't rule out mind expanding pharmaceuticals. :) Peace....Steve
That should start some discussion in their vinyl community. You hardly ever hear a review of the American release, only discussions about the "Butcher Cover." One of my fav songs on this record is "And Your Bird Can Sing". I have a 2nd state Butchers Cover that i bought new when the album came out, (luckily I never tried to peel it), and several other later release copies that I picked up in the "Used" bins over the years, one still sealed. Thanks for posting. Always a pleasure to see a new vid from you. Rundoe
Hey Rundo, thanks for stopping in. Yeah you make a good point, sometimes the whole butcher cover controversy overshadows the fact that, hodgepodge or not, this is a great little album. So it's good to remind people of that fact. And thanks for sharing with me all the different types and variations that you have as well. All the best and enjoy, Matt
I still have all of the American release vinyls. Am now curious as to what my cover looks like. I know that the record itself is a Capital rainbow swirl, but do not remember if that seal was on the cover. Guess I have a job for tomorrow.
If anyone doubts the greatness and genuine infinite appeal of the Beatles--as Matt was saying, "Got to Get You Into My Life" was released as a single, with almost no fanfare, in 1976 (10 years after Revolver), and went to #3. It probably would have eventually topped the charts had it not been smack in the middle of the disco era.
Hello there, and thanks for your kind words. You are sure making a lot of sense about got to get you into my life! Great thoughts. All the best to you and take care, Matt
Hi Matt, That is one Beatles album I will never forget about. That was the first album my Mom bought me,still have that original. Unfortunately is is not playable at this point. Too much play and I was a young child at the time, so it's pretty beat up! My favorite Beatles album indeed! Take Care, Allan
Hey Allan, thanks for sharing the awesome story about yesterday and today and your mom getting it for you. It reminds me of my parents getting me Beatles albums when I was younger as well. Playable or not, hang on to that album! Lots of memories there Allan. All the best, Matt
Y & T has always been one of my favorites. I have a few copies including a 2nd state. I had to buy the CD with the sticker when I saw it. That gold record version is '68 and is correct. They switched to the green target in '69.
Hey Bob, so great that you have a second state butcher cover! That's awesome! As for me, I don't think I'll ever have one, haha! And thank you for the great information about my stereo rainbow swirl Edition. That makes perfect sense and I appreciate you giving me the information. All the best, Matt
+Matthew Street I had always thought that I would never own one, but I was top bidder on a very, very excellent 2nd state (and got it for a very nice price considering) about 10 or so years ago. Never say never. :-)
Hi Mathew I got to hear about you from Mean Mr. MAYO. But I saw one of your videos that a guest/fan sent you a break down of CD's sent to you of The Mono Beatle albums but transferred in stereo with the Vocals in the Centre? What was the results like and are they on the net any where? Tks. Ken. (In ireland).....Next stop after Boston Mass. lol
The stereo copy with the Gold Record Award stamp is a later-60s West Coast pressing. They used the rainbow label on LPs until about late 1969, after which they switched to the C logo green label, only to be changed again in 1971 to the C-logo red label. I have a cover-only Butcher, it was second state when I found it at a friend's house, he had no idea and I was explaining how if you looked below the 'y' in Yesterday you could see Ringo's turtleneck thru the cover....and there it was. Why he just gave it to me I'll never know - the cover was textured, not a smooth finish, which made peeling it a really bad idea in my case...but hey, I have an original Butcher, what the heck. An early look forward in the Beatles oeuvre. That paper slip on the Japanese CD is called an obi, and is integral to the value of JPN pressings.
Thank you Chris, based on what other folks here are telling me and your great information, it sounds like mine is a West Coast pressing from late late 68 or 69. And I love your story about your butcher cover! Wow I can only dream of getting one that way. Haha! Thanks again and take care, Matt
I think Y and T was my second Beatles album, after Let it Be. I loved this album. The song collection, even though hodgepodge as far as Beatles were concerned, is one of their best collection of songs on any album. I didn't know any different at the time, so I loved it. Thanks for posting.
Hello Tony, and I agree with you 100%. I think since we grew up with yesterday and today as it was, we fell in love with it as a self-standing Beatles album. Thanks again for being proud of my channel. I appreciate it. Take care, Matt
Hi Matt whats up yes yesterday & today very cool album for sure , great Beatles album that seems to get over looked at times , my opinion the reason for the earlier yesterday & today cover was partly a protest on the Vietnam war & partly a protest of their albums being sent over here & being butchered by the us record label capitol , I know Paul McCartney said around that time in a press conference , " we make an album to be an album then we send it over here & it gets ruined , no offense capitol but you know its true " , I don,t think capitol ruined there albums but I do see there point , they made an album that they worked on only to get made two Beatles out of there one , capitol was keeping up with supply and demand of what fans wanted , which was more Beatles albums , & the new cover of Beatles yesterday & today if you turn the new cover on its side , it was said that it looks as if Paul is in a coffin , cool album great , I got my new flea market video up now did you get the notification , thanks for sharing have a good one Rock on Peace to you
Hey John, thanks for stopping in and checking out my yesterday and today video. Yes you are so right, it's a great little album in this so much history and stuff to learn about it. Sometimes the butcher cover controversy overshadows the fact that this is a great little album to listen to and enjoy. Oh and I did see that you have a new flea market video up. I just need to get some time to get over there and check it out but I will soon. All the best, Matt
I still have my original scratchy mono Capitol vinyl release of Yesterday And Today from June of ‘66. (Not the butcher cover however.) On this version Dr. Robert does not fade out completely and you can faintly hear John Lennon say “Okay...” at the end. This bit of dialogue does not appear on either the British or US vinyl issues of Revolver because of a faster fade out.
@@matthewstreet1961 Maybe you were thinking about the 1955 film Mr. Roberts starring Jack Lemon and Henry Fonda. As far as I know that movie has no connection to the Beatles.
Love the Yesterday & Today album but on the other hand, the U.S. version of the 'Revolver' album unfortunately got 'butchered' as a result. The British 'Revolver' rules!
As far as I know, Yesterday and Today was an album intended for North America and Canada market by the Capitol record. I notice the Beatles UK albums has 14 tracks and the tracks are all new songs. Unlike in US album it has 12 tracks only and they replace the songs with tracks in the previous album or single. Maybe I was wrong on this. What only in this album special is the cover photo only. The butcher the original cover photo and the second cover which the butcher was peeled and put on the trunk version photo. And lastly the printed trunk version of the cover photo of the album.
Thank you Ronie, all the information you provided was excellent! You are exactly right in everything you mentioned. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video I appreciate it. Take care, Matt
Great video homage to a great album, Matt! I mean, where else could you hear "Doctor Robert' back in the day? Or the hysterical jab at Frank Sinatra, "And Your Bird Can Sing?" Especially funny after reading the "Frank Sinatra Has a Cold" article from Esquire magazine published earlier in 1966, where I learned Lennon found his inspiration for the lyrics. Very funny indeed.
Hey Jim, great post and fantastic hearing from you. Yes it is hodgepodge, but I do enjoy this album immensely. Especially the mono version. All the best to you and take care, Matt
Because I live in Europe, the American releases of Beatles albums were a rarity over here in the 60s and 70s. Here we were naturally used to the UK editions. Yesterday And Today is a good compilation in my opinion. Only the American Revolver was seriously damaged by it. I can imagine that the band members were not happy with the American way of cutting and pasting their original albums. I do have 2 Yesterday And Today albums. A second and a third state butcher. Of course I have them for collectability. I don't have the nostalgic feelings about this album that you have Matt because in my youth there were only UK originals in Europe. Still a good listen and I do play it now and then. Take care my friend and great video :-))
Hey Jos, great post! I think it's fantastic that you have so many wonderful copies of yesterday and today...even though you're from overseas and love the UK versions the best, it's pretty cool that you still have some of the US versions as collectibles. Thanks again for stopping by and take care. Cheers, Matt
When I saw your title for this video I started wondering what could be a forgotten Beatles album. My first guess was Capitol's "The Beatles Story", the documentary double LP with the "who's a millionaire?" bit on it. Or the "Alpha-Omega" collection sold on TV in the early 70s. (BTW, I still have that one; the discs are in good shape but the box is a mess.)
I remember the TV ads for that Alpha-Omega collection. It featured an announcer with a HEAVY Australian accent: "Get the By-tils on AL pee or IGHT-track TYPE!"
Amazing to think now - records were expensive in the UK during the 1960s, so although I was crazy on The Beatles the first LP I had was The White Album - and even that had to be a combined birthday & christmas present.
You are so right Clive, records were very expensive in the UK back then. I lived in East Anglia near Ipswich from 1979 to 1981. I bought lots of Records over there and they were a little pricier than back in the US. And certainly when you tried to buy UK Imports in the United States, they were very expensive. Take care and thanks for being here, Matt
They were good value in the UK - eg Beatles For Sale £1 12s 6d + the single I Feel Fine/ She's A Woman at Christmas 1964 for 6s 8d, 16 tracks for less than £2, that's a couple of weeks paper/milk round money for 14 year old me...
Love Baby You Can Drive My Car. She goes through her whole routine about him driving her car and when he says he can start right away she says' Listen baby I've got something to say. Aint got no car and it's breaking my heart, but I got a driver and that's a start. Talk about looking at the glass half full.......
YOU KNOW MATHEW ,BY THE TIME THAT YESTERDAY AND TODAY CAME OUT ,THERE WERE THREE BEATLES TRACKS THAT WEREN'T ON ANY BEATLES ALBUMS ,THOSE TRACKS WERE "I'M DOWN ",PAPERBACK WRITER AND RAIN ".THOSE,SONGS COULD BE INCLUDED ON THE YESTERDAY AND TODAY ALBUM, YOU DON'T THINK SO ?, THANKS .
Hello Juan, yes my friend, you are exactly correct! I agree with you 100%. Those three songs should have been on yesterday and today. It would have made for a fantastic album, and they could have left revolver alone. Paul, fit to be tied dyed, also had a similar suggestion. You guys think alike! Take care, Matt
I also have a coloured vinyl bootleg of the Butcher Cover though mine's green. The cover is stereo and the label is mono. I have 2 copies of the cd mini lp and actually stuck the sticker on one of them. It's a flawed record just as most of the American releases are but is still a good listen.
Hey Mike, yeah you are so right, it is a great little album to listen to! And thanks for sharing with me the different versions and copies that you have as well. All the best, Matt
HEY MATTHEW , I KNOW IM OFF BASE HERE BUT AS I LISTEN TO THESE OTHER CHANNELISTS, ALL THEY DO IS YAP AND INTERRUPT THE SONG WITH USELESS BANTER , THAT ASIDE, I HAVE EVERY AMERICAN RELEASE INCLUDING BOTH VERSIONS BUTCHER AND THIS, AS FAR BACK AS TONY AND THE BEAT BROS , WHAT IM GETTIN AT IS YOU R THE BEST ON TUBE AND THE MOST INFORMATIVE SOURCE OF INFO, HAD TO LET YOU KNOW, SORRY FOR THE RANT, JT FROM MEX , ALSO HAVE ALL THE BRITISH VERSIONS, BOUGHT THE BUTCHER IN 66 AT A GARAGE SALE IN SAN DIEGO, STILL HAVE IT WRAPPED IN PLASTIC, PLUS EVERY 45 ISSUED , EVEN SHE LOVES YOU ON BLACK SWAN LABEL., A FEW TOLLEY SINGLES , GONNA NEVER LET THIS COLLECTION GO, AGAIN THANKS MATTHEW JT AGAIN
I have been on a Y&T kick lately. I got a NM Stereo Paste over with the original 1966 stereo LP The same mono Repro you have, a Stereo Repro, and the 1969 Green Target true stereo verison. I have coming a Purple label from 79?...Your rainbow label is a 68 or retro rainbow that came out in like 80 81 same time as Rarities. I also have a nice Blue Trunk cover Y&T. The rarest version is a Red Target label less than 100 made only 4 ever sold so far $3000+...Canadian versions of the red target are also Rare $300+ So you have many versions to catch up on. Take care
Hey Robert, wow! I guess you're right, I do have a lot of catching up to do on this album. But to be honest, I'll probably look for a few here and there but I don't think I could ever get all the ones you listed! Haha! Or I'd be broke! They all sound nice. With all the people like yourself explaining things to me, I think my stereo rainbow swirl copy is from 68. The reason I say so is I thought about it and the guy I got it from, who's a few years older than me, got most of his Beatle albums in late 60s. So I think you are right with the 68 version. Thanks again to take care, Matt
I passed on a second state Yesterday and Today many many years ago at a record vendor. At the time, I thought the suspicious looking pasted on cover might have been a pirated version or something. That was before I knew the story of the now famous paste over! Obviously the vendor didn't know the story either. Sheesh! I could have bought it for 10 dollars!
Hey oddbox topper, that's a great story about your second state butcher cover. And for $10! Wow! For that price, I would definitely get one! As it is though, I'll probably never own one. And I don't really worry about it. I'm happy with what I have. Take care, Matt
The original, US album ,"Yesterday...And Today" was ONLY available in Stereo to members of the "Capital Record Club"...My mom joined the "Capital Record Club" after my dad bought a HUGE stereo console for us at Christmas of 1966...I was the only kid around to have a true Stereo ,vinyl LP and a tremendous sound system to play it on.(eventually, mom bought True Stereo LP's of every Beatles album to that date...I still have every Stereo version of every Beatles US, Capital Records...the originals from the sixties. They are stored in a temp. stable room in my house and are still in "pristene" condition...I get them out once each year and play them on my turntable, and they sound BETTER than the CD versions..
I have original releases of the stereo and mono versions on the Capitol label. I have stereo and mono copies of all the U.S. releases that took me a while to collect. I still have my original collection, but many of them were damaged by a water leak.
Cool, sounds like you have some great versions there! So out of all of them, which one has your favorite sound to it? Or I should say your favorite mix? Thanks again and take care, Matt
When I bought the Sgt. Pepper's redo in '17, I finally realized what the REAL Beatles sounded like. None of the other Lps or cds can hold a candle to the stereo mix. The Beatles liked mono mixes because that's what they grew up hearing. EMI Studio heads didn't want to spend the money to upgrade, so George Martin had to put down 4 tracks, bounce them to another 4-track tape and keep going from there. So, when the band put layer after layer of overdubs on the tracks, to me, things got lost. That being said, the band usually didn't stay for the mixing on most of their Lps. Only when they did Revolver and on, did they stay. That's why the first stereo mixes sounded so bad. An engineer was doing the mixing into stereo and just didn't do a good job. Now, my favorite Lps are Rubber Soul, Revolver and Pepper with the White Album bringing up the rear. I was there when they released each album and we could hear them changing on each one. That's why I like those albums; they're more "grown-up".@@matthewstreet1961
The Beatles' opinion of their "albums" was the BRITISH versions. As far as they were concerned, the US versions were just collections of songs slapped together by the US record company (Capitol) with no particular attention to how they had planned them. The "Butcher cover" was indeed their reaction to the record company chopping up all the albums. "Yesterday and Today" was an especially egregrious example, consisting of songs chopped off of "Help," "Rubber Soul," "Revolver" and loose singles. By the time the Beatles got to "Sgt. Pepper" they had the clout to tell the record company, "Release it exactly the way we put it out," and make it stick.
I have an original that was pasted over and you can make out images underneath. These are worth a lot now so I'm never going to try steaming it, leave well alone!
@@matthewstreet1961 I see you as finding a great way to get through this shit year. Do what you Love and Love what you do. There are some things in this life that I might consider as non essential. The Beatles ain’t one of Em!!!! ⬅️ Ha ha... look... E minor! Cool!!! Anywaaaay... stay with your Heart, man. I have been helped by your efforts on youtube this year! Just so you know... There’s more to what you do than just the fun parts. Chuk
I still have my vinyl. When I heard about the cover scandal, I ran to my record store to get it, but they had already been switched out. Some of the covers were the original butcher photo with the new photo glued over it, and there were examples of people who had them and steamed the 2nd photo off to show the butcher pic. The story I had heard(1966) was that the photo matched to the song Dr. Roberts, which was a stinging satire about doctors and the medical profession. Indeed, there are a lot of quacks, and Dr. Roberts aimed right at them, and the cover pic matched it also. So, that's the story I heard, the album originally focused around the song Dr. Roberts, hence the cover photo.
Hi Tom, yeah I guess I was a little young. But looking back, I did get my first couple of beatle records from my parents in 1964. And then I slowly started completing their collection leading up to late 1976 when I got revolver and yesterday and today. So for me revolver came late in the party. But you are right in the sense that it is one of my favorite Beatle albums and it had a profound effect on me. I do love it very much. Thanks again for being here and take care, Matt
What a Great album! there is a 1984 picture album from one of the Beatle conventions that I own I wish I had an original Butcher album nice collection. This album is a greatest hits in a way really great track order
Hey Joe, thanks for stopping by. Wow I'm really liking that picture disc that you have. Sounds great! I'll bet it's hard to find nowadays. Thanks again for being here all the best, Matt
Trouble with the early US releases, were that they weren't The Beatles' new 'album'. They were cash-grab collections, as with 'Yesterday and Today'. That 'album' alone had three different album's material on it, plus a stand-alone single. (Day Tripper) Great front cover, if you can find an original with the dolls/meat inside the trunk/case shot. The 'real' releases were The UK issues, of witch, I think Pepper was the first for the states, to receive, 'as it should be'.
I have that album with both covers, the first with the butchers, then i still have the one with the steam trunk, my butcher is original and have been offered over 1500bucks, its been wrapped in plastic since i got it in 8th grade
Yes, I agree 100%. Although the British UK versions are the true versions that the Beatles desired and wanted, the US versions hold a special place in my young heart. Thanks again, Matt
Hey Matt! Firstly; fantastic video and great shirt, very cool. Being from Australia, the US copies of Beatles albums always fascinated me as a collector. I’ve always felt that the butcher interest always overshadowed the music within. Cheers ~Andrew
Hey Andrew, thanks very much! Yes even if they are not the official way the Beatles wanted their albums, it is still fun to collect the u.s. releases as a curio. As for my shirt, thank you for the compliments! I found it online and thought it was very unique. All the best, Matt
Matthew, I have a question for you: how much do you think can be the value of the Lp " sweet apple trax" ,1000( one thousand) limited copies edition, with the picture of the Beatles printed on the vinyl showing the band on the Apple Roof? I've read in internet about 200 dollars, but it is hard to believe that the price is so low, I thought much more! Regards to you, have a nice week end ,and do not forget to give a big Kiss to Gertie! 🐾
Hey Patrick, how are you doing? I am not sure about Sweet Apple Trax. You may want to ask Joe, Marv, or Paul. They all seem to have a bit more knowledge than I in these matters. I do not own a copy of Sweet Apple Trax. But I am tending to agree with you that that price seems a bit low. I would think it would be higher. By the way how is your doggy doing? Is he being good? As for Gertie, she's doing just fine. I had her out playing this morning. She loves to play fetch with me. I tuckered her out and got her nice and tired so she's sleeping now. Thanks again and take care, Matt
I've heard so many stories about why they put the Butcher Cover out, but haven't settled on one I believe, so I just gave up. It's just a cool cover. I'm glad Capitol reissued it on CD.
Great Point Clarence, I'm just glad to have a CD version of it as well. Maybe one day they will do a reissue on vinyl, now that would be something. Take care, Matt
Except they added some songs that in Britain were only released as singles. The reason seems to be that British teenagers had less disposable income than Americans and felt ripped off when an album contained tracks they already had on singles. American record buyers wanted the convenience of having the singles songs on albums and had the money to afford to buy them twice.
What do you think of the Beatles Rock n Roll Music album? With the thumbs on the sides and 50's Americana? That Album really is deleted and probably won't come back unless they really scrape the barrel for new Beatles stuff to RE release for cash after all the Beatles are dead or Paul gets very completest on the releases in his late age........em very very late age. But I actually love my UK stereo of this. The versions of the songs on it are somehow better than the standard albums the songs come from, just more louder and clarity and fuller. But I think Mr Martin had a little fiddle with them before it went out. Do you own it? Can you review it,or show us? Or am I late on this and you've done it in the past. Love to hear your thoughts and see your copy.
Hey Craig, you ask some great questions and bring up good points about the rock and roll music album. If you have a chance, I suggest you go to my channel and scroll back aways, not too far, and you will find I did a complete video about rock and roll music. I show my copies and talk about it pretty extensively. Let me know what you think. All the best, bye! Matt
Great video Matt. I've got a Canadian Import of this album (I live in the UK) on the Capitol swirl label, which I believe was pressed in 1985-86? (FTBTD would know for sure, I think he's done a video on this?). I picked it up from The Beatles Shop on Mathew Street in Liverpool around about 1989 I think? Yes, it's a great album, one I've always been intrigued about, what with the butcher cover story and with the 3 new songs lifted from the as yet released UK Revolver album (different mixes as well on YAT). It did weaken the US Revolver album with those songs left off. When did you find out that the UK Revolver had those 3 extra songs?
Hey Neil, thanks for the great information my friend. I think it was sometime after I completed getting all the u.s. Beatles albums, that I started looking into getting the imports from the UK. So I can't tell you for sure when it was but it had to be sometime during the 80s that I figured out that the UK revolver was the better choice all around. Thanks again and take care, Matt
Thanks for the reply Matt. I meant to say that my Canadian copy of YAT is on a Capitol rainbow label (not swirl, I don't know what I was thinking there!). I've just watched your video on your review of the film Yesterday and was touched by your reaction on what happened towards the end of the film. I went to see the film last Friday (when it was released) and I thought it was a good film, not a great one and I would give it around the same mark if I had to rate it. Well worth a watch if you're a Beatles fan like us. I will get the DVD when it comes out. I don't want to say any more on this so I'm not trying to spoil anything for anybody who's not seen the film. Thanks and take care!
Hey Neil, thanks for your kind words about my review of yesterday. I have to admit, at first I was thinking of not posting it because of the emotional rollercoaster. I figured it was too much you know? But then I decided, what the heck, it's only emotions and if people can't deal with that then I can't worry about that. So I just wore my heart on my sleeve and let it go. It is what it is. But I thank you for being so nice about it. Take care, Matt
The three Revolver tracks on this aren't even in proper stereo - it's a mono conversion. Apparently Capitol wouldn't wait for the stereo versions. You have to get the UK Revolver to hear them properly. On the plus side, Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out sound really good (stereo version) and in the UK these were only available as the single (mono) or on Oldies But Goldies which doesn't quite sound as good somehow. Yeh how can you have Rubber Soul without Nowhere Man and Revolver without And Your Bird Can Sing?
No Chris, I have not played it. Just a collectible I display. Perhaps I will, now that you mentioned it. I'm not sure of the source either. Sorry buddy. Cheers Matt
Funny you should mention the movie yesterday, I did see it. And if you look at the video right after this one, I did a full review of it. All the best, Matt
you being a Beatles fan I have the original Beatles Album on the original Chinese rice paper made on the only Monoral Stereo machine its never been played no needle has ever touched the record
I think Capital Records were really greedy. The English versions of Beatle albums usually had 14 tracks. The American-Capital version would only have 11. Capital would routinely withhold 3 tracks from each album. Do that to 3 albums and add a single A, and B sides thay have another Beatles album.
Cool video Matt, I always like hearing about the US records, none of which I've ever heard or owned. It's funny hearing you worrying that you don't have enough copies of the same record....bet your wife thinks you have enough, lol. Great to see you as always, James
Haha James! Great post! And you are so right, if you asked mrs. Street, she would tell you I have more than enough Beatle records. And yes I was being a little bit of a drama queen when I was crying about needing more copies of the album! Haha! Deep down I am pretty happy with what I have. But I like to be a little diva and a whiner sometimes in my videos just for the show! Haha! So you caught me haha! Thanks again James always a pleasure to hear from you, Matt
Hi Matt, just discovered your channel. I, too, was 15 in 1976, and had finally convinced my dad to give me $75 to buy a steamed butcher cover with very few tears. My dad was blind and got $300/mo ssi. Our rent was about $80/mo. At the last moment, his friend talked him out of giving me the money. People should mind their own business. I just saw the last few minutes of your video. You are TOO funny with making your own version with the sticker they give you.
Hello Rudolph, wow what a great story but I am so sad that you missed out on getting that album. It's too bad because I think of what it would be worth today. Thanks for being part of my channel I truly appreciate it. Take care, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 My pleasure, Matt. I subscribed and rang bell. It's not even the value aspect, it's just that it was so close. It would have made what little collection I have really unique. As it is, I have a lot of 45 picture sleeves (U.S. Capitol, of course), a lot of Beatles cards, and some odds and ends. I used to wait until the albums went on sale at Korvettes in Herald Square for $3.99 in 1975 and '76 to buy them. There was a place on West 4th Street where I got my picture sleeves for $7. And Broadway below 14th St had all the mom&pop antique stores and I got Beatles cards for a quarter each.
At the end of 1966 Brian Epstein renegotiated the Beatles' contract with EMI, and one of the clauses he got into the new contract stipulated that from then on the Beatles' albums would be released with the same song contents and sequencing everywhere in the world. Before that the albums were so relentlessly edited and re-sequenced that the answer to the question, "How many Beatles LP's were there?," depends on what country you were in. There were 13 Beatles albums in the U.K., 19 in the U.S. and 26 in Japan, where EMI's affiliate released all the British albums AND all the American albums that had songs that in Britain were only released as singles. I suspect that's why the 2014 CD of "'Yesterday' … and Today" you showed was a Japanese release.
"Yesterday & Today" to me has always been the first Beatles "Greatest Hits" album as it's basically a collection of singles that predated the UK issue of "A Collection of Oldies But Goldies" by around seven months. I think for most Beatles fan it's the default go-to album of the US catalog partially because of the legend of the Butcher cover but also because it's pretty darn solid collection of songs. The only gripe I think a lot of fans have with it is that it's emergence ended up stripping the US version of "Revolver" of three tracks, although one has to wonder the way that Capitol Records cannibalized the UK catalog, why they didn't put Paperback Writer/Rain on "Revolver" to fill out the numbers? Overall, "Yesterday & Today' is a solid record, not my favorite of the US Catalog (that would be "Beatles VI") but certainly nowhere near as egregious as some of the titles in the US catalog.
Hey JL draw, great post! I like your analogy comparing yesterday and today to a Beatles greatest hits album. Good point. And you're right, other people have mentioned also that they should have included Paperback Writer and rain and perhaps even I'm down on this album and save the three John Lennon revolver songs. I think that would have been a cool idea. Thanks again for the great information and take care, Matt
Hey Jimmy thanks a lot! Yeah it's a long sleeve t-shirt, navy blue marble in color, and has an image from the Beatles 1966 Budokan concert on the front and some yellow Japanese writing on the left sleeve. I found it by chance online I was looking for Unique Beatles shirts and it came up. Thanks again take care, Matt
It's a Capitol Records album, not a Beatles album, with singles and the backlog Capitol had cut from previous U.S. albums. Since it wasn't an "official" Beatles album, and Apple wasn't formed until a couple of years later, it may have taken Apple a while to put their stamp on later pressings.
@@matthewstreet1961 "I'm Only Sleeping" is the most obvious one, the backward guitar part doesn't start at the same moment (a bit like the different between the mono & stereo "Pepper" for the title song or Mr. Kite). "And your bird can sing" has louder guitart parts during the break. I don't know for Dr. Robert. Legend has it that when Capitol asked for new songs, Revolver wasn't finished and the mixes weren't the definitive ones... Moreover, some mono copies of "Yesterday and Today" use fold-down mixes (mixing the 2 stereo channels from the stereo mix) instead of using uk mixes and the stereo version has unique mixes of "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" ! And to add a little more mindf!ck, when they issued the Capitole cd box set, they mostly used UK mixes (a shame, because it would have been great to have the original U.S. mixes)
Wow Gootsey, such great information there! I truly appreciate you taking the time to shed some more light on those tracks on yesterday and today. I will definitely be looking for them now thanks to you. All the best and take care, Matt
about the gold album stamp on the album - originally a gold album was one that sold one million dollars worth at wholesale price, usually about 1/3 retail. in 1975 a gold album became one that sold 500,000 copies.
I remember that album with the stamp on it from the original days, as well as on beatles VI
There was nothing like them then and there is nothing like them now. December 8, 1980 was the day the music died.
Or perhaps March 26th 1827
@@yummyyum36719 or perhaps 10th January 2016
@@yummyyum36719 I'm guessing that was Beethoven?
Nah man it was December 5th 1791
I got "Yesterday and Today" as a teenager back in the mid 70s. It's weird because back then you could only get the U.S. versions of the albums. I remember being surprised at how different albums like Rubber Soul were in their U.S. versions.
One of my favorite beatle albums. Bought it when it was released in 66. Still have it.
It is certainly a great one Dan! I really love it in mono as well. Take care, Matt
This was my favorite album growing up. I still have it.
Absolutely James!
That is a really great album Matthew. I have always loved it
Hey James, yes sir, you are so right! This is a cool album. Hodgepodge or not, it's a great rocking album! And who cares about the whole butcher cover controversy. Cover or not it's fabulous! Take care buddy, Matt
Watching one of your earlier videos. Love "Yesterday and Today" and love the photo they used for it. Take Care - Edward
All the best, Matt
and your bird can sing really rocks
Lennon wrote it and hated it and wanted to throw it away!
@@danielgautreau161 George Harrison's lead guitar is what makes that song.
I love that song!
I enjoyed your enthusiasm.
It shows just how much you enjoy the music and the history and the fun you had.
(And... that is a lot of ands!)
(And I love her)
Thanx!
Enjoyable video. 🌈
Hello Dura, and thanks for your kind words. I appreciate you stopping by and checking out the video. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care, Matt
The 45 of Got To Get You Into My Life was released on Capitol Records in the US in 1976.
Thanks for the information and for stopping by! Take care, Matt
Matt, Yesterday and Today is a great album, I liked it when it first came out I’ll have to look for the cd thank you , Steve
Thanks Steve, I'm with you...its a great album, despite being a Capitol creation.
Matt, I found the yesterday and today cd you talked about, purchased it, a great addition to my collection again Thank You, Steve
Oh Well..
I agree...
The unique characteristics of this LP are the remixed mono versions of the Lennon songs on the early Capitol versions vs. the stereo versions of the same songs on some of the later Apple versions of the vinyl.
Thanks for the great information about the mixes here. I truly appreciate it. Take care, Matt
The original stereo copies of the LP had those three mono mixes converted to their horrid Duophonic fake stereo process. At the time Revolver was released Capitol replaced those three with true stereo mixes but only on the reel to reel copies. I believe they replaced them all on cassette and vinyl as time went on.
I'm only sleeping sounds really strange on the first stereo pressing.
I had the original Beatles' US release on VJ Records before they signed with Capitol---and if only I could find it now!
That's unfortunate. I still have mine.
I had the first VJ '45' record of Love Me Do only to be lost in dispute with an old friend. I lost a lot in that fight.
I still have it on mono
@@donbuck8110 On the VJ cover they looked like 4 gelded choir boys...but I played that record till the grooves wore out!
I have mine too. But it’s pretty scratched up. I was ten years old and my favorite song from the album back then was There’s A Place.
Thanks for stopping in Patrick and sharing your memories of this part of The Beatles career. All the best and take care, Matt
Absolutely love the guitar work on And Your Bird Can Sing. Dont recall who played it, but thinking it was Paul
Actually it is a double solo with George and Paul both playing.
George and paul together
Wow I just listened to this album yesterday I swear us Beatles fans think alike . I put this on and really enjoyed it because of the track listing.

Hey Steve, awesome that you love the album as much as I do! Thanks for sharing and I appreciate it. All the best, Matt
Have fun checking it out Joel. And maybe you'll give it a spin as well! Enjoy! Take care, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961Have not gotten around to it yet, hopefully over the weekend. Will keep you informed.
I still have almost all the Beatle albums that were purchased when released originally.
Awesome Douglas, very cool !
The RIAA stamped Y&T was the final Rainbow pressing that had a matted black instead of glossy, and the STEREO font is different
Thanks for the great information, that seems to be the one I have, from the late 60s. All the best, Matt

Y & T has always been one of my favorites. I have a few copies including a 2nd state. I had to buy the CD with the sticker when I saw it. That gold record version is '68 and is correct. They switched to the green target in '69.

Hello Matthew great album .I know there is a pink vinyl out there hopefully you can find it. take care.
Hey Harold, wow, I really like to find a pink copy on vinyl! Thanks for the tip take care, Matt
The Gold Record Award Seal covers did not take long to hit the shelves. Yes, it was issued with rainbow labels before the Green ones showed in '69.
Thanks hoot, and I appreciate your information. All the best to you, Matt

I know the Beatles hated the Capital Albums but this one is amazing and as good as any of the original Albums. An incredible collection of songs.
Great info! Thanks CB! Cheers Matt
You are so right! I cannot listen to the American revolver anymore. That UK revolver is top-notch! Take care, Matt
8:23 - Watching in 2021 - Matthew, do you have MOFI innersleeves? That's a beautiful looking record.

I bought my copy in 1968. It has the gold record stamp on it.
Very cool Chazz! Perhaps I have one from around the same time. Take care...Matt
The butcher cover was such an insane idea. I doubt even death metal bands could get away with it today...
You're probably right! Haha! Thanks for stopping by. Take care, Matt

Fabulous info Ray! I loved reading your post. You are a very fortunate fan for sure! Cheers Matt
It's basically Side Two of the UK Help album, plus.
Yes George, good point! Cheers Matt
That's why I like those albums; they're more "grown-up".@@matthewstreet1961
great album
Great points! I really enjoyed your post and all the good information in it. Thanks again and take care, Matt
I have an original that was pasted over and you can make out images underneath. These are worth a lot now so I'm never going to try steaming it, leave well alone!

Yesterday and Today sold over 5milliom copies before they changed to Apple
Hey Thomas, thanks for the info! Wow over 5 million sold! Imagine that. Take care, Matt
Hello Mike, thank you for such great information about your experiences with the album. I really appreciate it. Thanks again and take care, Matt
Doctor “Robert”. Not “Roberts.”
@@CBrolley oh, thank you so much.

Wow you turned on to Revolver at an early age, that must have been mind blowing.

The only Beatles album I've never owned (I have all the songs of course)! But I would love to have a Baby Butcher copy!
Hi David, and thanks for your comments. Yes it is a great little album despite it being somewhat hodgepodge. All the best, Matt
You definitely make some great points here. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts. Good stuff!
I had one of these when I was a kid
my first was the VeeJay label

I prefer The Beatles Capitol releases because thats what i grew up with
Yes, I agree 100%.

Capitol's releases in the U.S. were just compilations from various studio albums, from the original British Parlophone label.
6:22 - That Apple logo - looks like the 1972 re-issue.
Hello David, I think what folks are telling me is I have a 68 or 69 pressing here. But thanks for the info. Take care, Matt
The gold record seal was a re-release in the late 60s to early 70s.
Thank you for the great information. That makes total sense and others here have told me mine is probably from the late 60s. All the best, Matt
Hello Clockwork, you make a lot of great points in your post. I appreciate you passing along the information. All the best, Matt
👍👍😎✌️
Hey Wayne, thanks for watching! Cheers Matt

I know you must have seen tthe movie "Yesterday" right? If so, did you like it?

you being a Beatles fan I have the original Beatles Album on the original Chinese rice paper made on the only Monoral Stereo machine its never been played no needle has ever touched the record
Nice...
I think Capital Records were really greedy. The English versions of Beatle albums usually had 14 tracks. The American-Capital version would only have 11. Capital would routinely withhold 3 tracks from each album. Do that to 3 albums and add a single A, and B sides thay have another Beatles album.
Agreed. The Capitol Records releases have much poorer sound.
@@matthewstreet1961
My pleasure, Matt.
Love The T shirt!
It is a good album even if it is at the expense of Revolver. I do have and like that 2014 cd.
Hello Franco, thanks for participating and you're right you can't beat the UK revolver. Take care, Matt
Thanks, that makes sense. All the best, Matt
The three "Revolver" tracks are different mixes from the Revolver album !
Really? I did not know that. Can you shed a little more light on it? How different are they? Thanks again for the great information. Take care, Matt
I have a Capitol record club version & all songs are in true stereo!!!
Sounds awesome William! Take care, Matt
