Personally, I would have picked "Hey Bulldog" as the Beatles most under rated song. Though, I cannot disregard "I'm Down," either.

I’d call “Hey Bulldog” more overlooked and underrated. “I’m Down” was prominently featured in their live shows, like Shea Stadium, for example.

@@vadouis-rt3of And that’s an interesting story: the footage of them recording “Hey Bulldog” was released as a promo video for “Lady Madonna”!
I don’t think I saw it with the original music until the 3-disc set of “1+” was released in 2015.
Furthermore, the “Hey Bulldog” segment of the “Yellow Submarine” movie was edited out until the film was re-released in 1999.
So it may not be the deep cut that it once was, but for a long time that song was badly neglected.

@@Malacandra Correct. However, the British release of the movie did contain the part where "Hey Bulldog" was. It was left out of the American version of the film.

You are spot on with this Matt. I'm Down is one of the highlights of The Beatles UK Rarities album that I got as a fledgling Beatles fan back in the late 70's, and it is underrated, and was also their show closer for the remaining time as a live touring band, that along with Long Tall Sally (Which is one of my favourite cover songs The Beatles did). I remember when I first heard I'm Down. Believe it or not, I first heard the song in the Live at Shae Stadium film. I had every album at that time, so I looked for the song, and couldn't find it. I liked it immediately and wanted to know more abut it. It was such a mystery. I was nine, a huge Beatles fan, thought I knew every song, but yet I had never heard this. Why? What was the name of this song? Why isn't it on any album. It's GREAT! and then, for my tenth birthday, my aunt, who was moving, gave me her copy of the single Help, and, there it was, on the other side, in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on the other side, in Capitol letters, was the following song: I'M DOWN! EUREKA! I finally found the song that had captivated me for all this time from when I saw Live at Shea Stadium! I was so excited! Yes, this is truly a classic, but nearly forgotten gem. It really is one of their best, but often neglected if only for the fact it was the B-side to a single. This song deserves a lot more love and attention than it gets. You know what other song deserves more recognition, that was also a B-side which reamins one of my all time favorite Beatles song to this day? YU KNOW MY NAME (LOOK UP THE NUMBER!) At the time this was the closest the fans were gonna get to hearing one of the Christmas records, if you weren't a fan club member. It's wacky, it's zany, it's off the wall, and it's unlike anything they ever did prior, or ever again. There's definitely a very silly Monty Pythonesque feel to the song. It's fun. It's enjoyable. And, most people don't know thi, but that's Brian Jones, of The Rolling Stones, playing the saxophone. Great video, as always, Matt. Have a great weekend.

I was always puzzled why "I'm Down" was not put on one of the US Capitol albums. Later, in 1970, they could have slipped it in with the lineup of songs on the Hey Jude album, but it was overlooked. It certainly is a great song, and the Beatles thought enough of it to play it on their final Ed Sullivan Show appearance, the day before their Shea Stadium concert (in which they played it again).
For a song in the ballad category, I nominate "I Will" as a classic song that no one ever seems to talk about (at least I never heard anyone make any special mention of it). "I Will" has that classic, sparkly-sounding guitar, and it has a beautiful melody. It is short and sweet, always making me wish that there was more. Maybe its brevity is part of what makes it so great. An old saying in show business was something about leaving the audience wanting more.

Matt, among the many reasons I subscribed to your channel is because I feel like I'm listening to an old Beatles pal who just sat down to talk Beatles stuff with me for a few minutes. Ha! I discovered the song the same way you did. One of the (many) songs that showcases McCartney's extraordinary vocal and songwriting range-he's one of the greatest rock singers and writers, period; who else could sing this song, "Here, There, and Everywhere," and "Oh! Darling" and everything in between-and Harrison's lead is great; the first half of it is exhilarating, then he seems to run out of notes, then he finishes it off perfectly. (As I'm sure you know, Harrison had very little time to develop guitar parts for their early songs; it's a miracle he ever came up with anything, let alone some of the great stuff he DID come up with. His lead on "Something," of course, is his masterpiece, in my opinion.) Thanks for another great vid, Matt!

First of all, let me say: A fine video! And now for my usual old man rant. I couldn't agree more, Matthew. My friends and I couldn't believe it wasn't on either Beatles VI or Yesterday and Today. If ever there was a need for a 12th track, this was it! But, no! Capitol didn't really need The Beatles to go into Abbey Road to record an 11th track. They had a total of five to choose from, but I'm Down would have been the qualifying track. Just in case anyone forgot, they were 1) Misery, 2) There's A Place, 3) From Me To You, 4) Leave My Kitten Alone and (you guessed it) 5) I'm Down. Since at the time there was no stereo mix available, they could have done a fake stereo mix just like they had to do with Yes It Is. As we all know as of the mid-90s after the Anthology series, Kitten, was a leftover track from Beatles For Sale, so that would have also been an option. Of course, Capitalist Records should have abandoned Early Beatles and released Please Please Me in tact even though I Saw Her Standing There would have been repeated. Notwithstanding, the latter had no business being released as the B-side to I Want to Hold Your Hand. This Boy was a much better B-side taking the rocker/ballad format. They did this with the Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson releases, as I recall, so now I'm dating myself, but you get the picture. We didn't get the three early tracks until 1980 on Beatles Rarities, which has yet to see a CD release. Take a hint, Capitol!

This song has all the qualities you're talking about yet is the complete opposite of I'm Down. Yes It Is is a tender ballad, simple arrangement and a superb guitar part from George. So both these b sides are perfect examples of what The Beatles could, and both are at opposite sides of the spectrum, what a great band The Beatles were!

Loved the video and the scenery is amazing too, absolutely stunning.I remember listening to I’m down for the first time and thinking wow this is a really good song and wondered why it didn’t make an album. My thoughts are it might have been considered too rock n roll and a throw back to the fifties music and the early Beatles were more about pop music and new sounds. The same happened to “one after 909” first recorded in 62/63 it’s a great rock n roll song written by John in the fifties but it never made the albums or b side of the singles and I think again that was considered too rock n roll and not modern enough for the Beatles sound. A version did end up on Let it be but it was very different to the 62/63 version. For the record Matthew I think the most underrated song by the Beatles is Georges “ it’s all to much” ended up in obscurity on the original ,Yellow submarine album, it should have been on the a White Album.

    Hmm…so many…

    I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party…
    Think For Yourself…
I, Me, Mine (that VOCAL PERFORMANCE!)…
    I Will…
    You’re Going to Lose That Girl” (that’s a Top 5er for moi!)…
Note: I was going to reiterate that “I’m Down” wouldn’t be on my list, but I couldn’t even REMEMBER which song you made this video for. (Senile???)
Just watched a video from a German show where they closed with “I’m Down” and there’s no denying of its energy.
However, if you watch the end of the DC Coliseum show, you’ll notice it’s THE EXACT SAME ENERGY only it’s a cover.
Plus it has the line, “We’re Gonna Have Some Fun Tonight”, which is what the vibe of the song is.
Singing “I’m really down” doesn’t quite capture that same feeling, although I am 99.4% certain that was Paul’s intention. 🤓

Well if you're just gonna tell lies thinking I can't see.... then it's over Matt!! 😆
I'm Down is certainly a gem, perhaps buried under so many other gems and diamonds.
I can't say what I think is the most underrated, but there are quite a few "I wish people knew THIS one" candidates!

Oh yeah they used to do that song live, so at least the Beatles noticed how good it was. Yes, that is a great track. I think formerly their most unappreciated song was, "Hey Bulldog" but that has legions of fans now. So I guess you've found the next most unappreciated song!

And yet, Capitol Records didn't think enough of it, to put it on the "Yesterday... And Today" LP comp. It would've been perfect on there. The Beatles did think enough of "I'm Down" to perform it live. Even in 1966, it was their show closer. I first heard it on the UK "Rarities" LP comp. One of the few UK albums I had. Also, "Beatles For Sale" and "Yellow Submarine". I think "I'm Down" is a great Beatles rocker. Obviously inspired by Little Richard.

Let's see; approximately four minutes of ads, and then four minutes talking about the song before saying the title. "I'm Down" was a b-side, and not on an album because, 'it's not' a top tier Beatles song by any stretch of the imagination! I've never thought much of it! In fact, until you mentioned it I'd forgotten all about it! I have a list of my "100 Favorite Beatles Songs" of which several good tunes did not make the list, and "I'm Down" was never even considered.

    No argument here.
My Mom bought my brother and I two Beatles singles back in the '60s. A Hard Day's Night and Help singles. She must have been influenced by the movie angle. Nonetheless, "I'm Down" is probably the most played Beatles song in my hardcore Beatles world. Lots of great live versions to.

I too think “Long, Tall, Sally” is one of their most underrated- uh, what? You mean they’re not the same song? 🤷🏼‍♂️
So recently it became pretty clear to me that “I’m Down” was Paul’s best effort to replicate the Little Richard classic.
And although it gave them the opportunity to rock out during the touring years, all you have to do is watch the end of the Washington DC Colosseum concert to know that “LTS” had the same effect, only way better!
Alas, I am always intrigued by how diverse Beatles recordings can be, yet still manage to be someone’s favorite, or someone’s favorite underrated tune. In this regards, no opinion is invalid. So I will let you get away with this. 🤠
Meanwhile, at least off the top of my head, I think my favorite underrated song of theirs would be, “ All I’ve Got to
    Do”.
My musical brothers and I recently performed this tune at my 60th birthday party. And although I really wanted to sing it, I had to let my brother Luis have it, since he had become so enamored by it during rehearsals
It ended up being the only song we played off of “With the Beatles”, though, if you switch out “Meet” for “With”, we played a total of four tunes off that record.
And you can probably guess what the other three were. 😊

I respectfully disagree I think ”Rain” is the most underrated song from The Beatles. The thing about I’m down is, Paul was not a depressive person. John song help was clearly emotionally driven song you could hear it in his singing voice, Paul responded with This song seems pretentious and manufactured,. It’s not emotionally connected.
