I know what you are saying completely. I always considered the Beatles to be the "soundtrack to my life" and having lost my own Mom at 14, I could identify with them and their music carried me through so much. They are still carrying me now and I can't imagine a world without them. Yeah you are right, some people may poke fun at that but that's okay. You know and I know what they represent. They were not just musicians, not by a long shot. You did a wonderful review and I can't wait to see this movie. XO
Thank you Karen for your kind words about my video I truly appreciate it. You also bring up some great points about the Beatles being important in our lives. They have been a big part of my support system for many many decades. All the best to you and take care, Matt
Hello Mike, yes you are so right, it is nice to think of John in an alternative Universe doing well and living to a ripe old age. We can dream. All the best, Matt
Mike Clarke, When I saw him (John Lennon) in this movie, I immediately thought maybe he is actually alive somewhere, just faked his own death in order to “live a normal” life away from the drama & craziness of being a celebrity. Call it wishful thinking.
I totally agree with you that I, too, have never gotten over John Lennon's tragic death, and I know I never will. Seeing him portrayed in the movie, was so touching, and I agree that it was the best part of the movie. I loved seeing John at age 78, being the artist that he actually studied to become. As for the movie, I absolutely loved it, and can't wait to see it again when the dvd/blu-ray is released. Great review!
The John Lennon scene was very emotional indeed. I actually missed a lot of the dialogue because I was crying. Thankfully someone posted it online and I was able to watch it again.
Hello, and thanks for stopping by. Yeah I agree with you, it was a very emotional moment. Thanks for the tip about it being online here. I need to check that out again. All the best, Matt
I'm 62. I was 24 when John was murdered and I was sent home from work (in a nice way) because I kept bursting into tears. I totally get you. I teared up at the Lennon scene as well. I did love the whole movie though (I adore alternate timeline/universe stories) and think Himesh Patel did a truly stellar job. I understand the criticisms you and others have made of the movie, but for me it was mainly a love letter to the Beatles and I appreciated it as that. Looking forward to owning the sound track.
Hello buddy, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful post. Like you I look forward to getting the soundtrack as well. Thank you for sharing your emotions here. I am sure losing John affected us pretty much the same way. Take care, Matt
Buddy I was in my dorm room studying for a final exam. I heard some loud talking in hallway. Someone came to my door and told me. First time in my life I involuntarily fell to my knees. I went into shock.
Carla Dinsmore, I bought it PLUS the online copy of the movie. Thank you Beatles for a wonderful, musical life, thank you Danny Boyle & crew for making this awesome movie. And thank you Himesh Patel, you are my new favorite actor ❤️😍❤️
@@janetmcabee I also bought the soundtrack and the bluray copy of the movie. I watched it again, and loved it even more the second time!! I've already invited a friend to come watch it with me, and I can't wait to see it all over again!
Wonderful review, Matt. We agreed on many things. And I so appreciated your touching feelings near the end - and I heartily relate to your emotions. I saw the movie twice - but believe it or not, the first time I missed the paint brushes and "artist" touches in the John sequence. Sometimes you need to see a movie more than once to catch every little thing.
Hello Joe, thanks for your kind words about my review. Coming from you, it means a lot. I truly enjoyed yours as well. Yes I do need to see the movie again as I am sure I miss some things too. Was the movie Oscar worthy? No, but it was a fun enjoyable make you feel good kind of movie. All the best Joe take care, Matt
That miniature Beatles gear replica drum and guitar set you have behind you - I own that too! It was pretty expensive on Ebay. I've had it for over 10 years.
I hope TH-cam feature the John Lennon scene, when I watched it on cinema I held down my weeping and I had difficulty breathing, I want to watch that scene again in TH-cam so I could cry openly. Thanks Matt for this great review.
Really fun movie. Thanks for your beautiful thoughts about John. On my first viewing of the film, I got emotional during the Lennon scene. I was 12 when he was killed. I couldn't take my eyes off the actor who played him. The second time I watched was with my mom, a casual fan of the Beatles' popular songs. I could sense she was connecting more with the love story side of the movie, but when old John Lennon appeared on the screen, she literally gasped and said, "He's alive!"
Do we know what Paul and Ringo thought of it? I live and breathe Beatles. They have been a huge part of my life since the early 60’s. Going in I was very apprehensive. Just imagining a world without The Fab Foursome and their life altering creations was horrendous. I was pleasantly surprised though, and enjoyed the film very much. Himesh Patel was terrific! The John Lennon scene reduced me to tears. It was so beautifully done. I was hoping like yourself, that we might have got a glimpse of the alternate universe George, Paul and Ringo. It was hard to end the movie knowing the Beatles still didn’t exist there. It was joyfully invigorating, therefore to sit through the closing credits and listen to Paul’s dulcet tones. Thank you for your excellent review.
Tom sounds like a great bloke: making those cassettes to buy his wife a present is a wonderful thing and makes him a champion in my view. I understand how you feel about the Beatles and their importance, and I'm sure most won't laugh. Most of us have our heroes and of course it's not unique to Beatle fans. I watched a documentary about Slayer and they were in Eastern Europe meeting fans. One fan was hugging one of the members, perhaps Tom Araya, and was crying saying how Slayer had saved his life and that he had been suicidal..... it was very touching. Anyway, I am not sure if I will see the movie but being a John fan I might see it for that one scene. Thanks for the review and I hope your dad's well.
Hello kiola, and thank you for your nice words about Tom. He would very much appreciate that. He is a great guy and very thoughtful. With a big heart. I like how you related the Slayer story to this as well. Very interesting. The Beatles certainly have had a big impact on all our lives. Take care, Matt
Just saw the movie a few hours ago and when the "John scene" happened, when that door opened, it took my breath. And when we hear that he's 78 years old, I started to cry and even after the movie I can't talk about it without getting emotional. When those 2 people that were following them revealed themselves, I didn't see that coming.
I know exactly how you feel about the whole John Lennon thing. And even though it's just a fictional movie, it's nice to think that if there's even the slightest possibility that alternate realities do exist, that just maybe John (and George) are living their lives somewhere else in the universe. Great review.
I totally get you, Matt. I saw an advance screening Thursday. I didn’t try to go in with a preconceived idea about what to expect. I really tried to go with the flow. I had a very powerful reaction to the scene you described. I’m telling my Beatle friends to see it and see it soon!
Absolutely Fred, if someone is a fan of The Beatles they need to see this. That scene really got to me. Is the movie as a whole oscar-worthy? Heck no, but it was a fun two hours and I really enjoyed the fact that it's spreading the word of The Beatles and their magic. All the best to you, Matt
its grieving for the lost potential of a great singer/songwriter. At least we have the legacy of a huge catalog, lots of film footage and bless those tribute bands. Love the Fab Four
Hi Matthew. I finally saw the movie over the weekend so I was able to watch your review. What you were saying about feeling sorry for people who don't get how special The Beatles are really touched me. I didn't "get it" until a few years ago and it is probably the best gift music has ever given me. In the last few years I have been able to discover their greatness and hear some of their best songs for the first time. (Day In the Life, The Ballad of John and Yoko, Don't Let Me Down ect) Anyway, I loved your review and I love that the special surprise the movie had meant so much to you. If only it were true and he could have lived out his life.
Hello Melinda, thank you for your very kind words about my review. I truly appreciate it. So happy you enjoyed the movie and got a lot of the same inspiration from it as I did. I can also really relate to your feelings about the Beatles touching your life excetera. Great insights from you within your post. Thanks again for being here and all the best to you, Matt
Hey Greg, thanks for the kind words. Wow, that amazes me that you had the opportunity to see them in New Orleans all those years ago. You must have some cool memories. All the best, Matt
Their music did, and still can, bring positivity, and was in an era that other artists were trying to do the same. Love, both personal and towards the world being a better place was being emphasised. I loved them as a teenage, even got to see more than once in their early tours, being from the north of England. But the screeming had started, no wonder, and thank goodness they moved into the studio where their incredible creativity blossomed.
Hello e h, thank you for your very insightful and interesting post. I especially love the part where you mentioned that you saw them back in the day. Wow you must have some awesome memories there! All the best to you and take care, Matt
'John Lennon' was played by Robert Carlyle, you know the Scots Guy who had to be put in subtitles in RiffRaff, not even a professional actor back then, now doing a perfect Liverpool accent. Robert Carlyle has had a journey ....
Just great !! It was a lot of fun to here the story about you friend :). But I did like the move a lot like you and I do thank you for watching my video on it as well . Your ending was very hart felt and I totally agree with you about the hole thing about John …… Yes what if he was here today WOW !!!! Sad part we will lose Paul and Ringo as well . Butt the music always live with all of us …. Rock on Beatles !!!! Great job Matt take care .
Hello Brad, so happy you stopped by and checked out my video. I always appreciate your insightful thoughts. Yes, I think we all have the same feelings about that one scene and the movie in general. It is nice to see The Beatles and their music become more out there for the masses. For that alone this movie served its purpose. Thanks for being here my friend, and I am so happy you are home and recovering with your loved ones. Take care and bless you, Matt
Just watched Yesterday again, so needed to see this. I love the dream with Paul and Ringo's feet from Abbey Road. The John section was heartbreaking. He was so much a contentious force.
Hello Cat, and I do like your grading system. I would say that we pretty much match spot on. Although I did give the movie a slightly higher score. All the best, Matt
Matt, I feel as you do, sorry for the people who don’t REALLY get the Beatles. I was 13 in 1964 when I saw the Beatles in concert in Detroit. I remember that concert every year on September 6th which was the date I saw that concert. Nothing has ever compared to that excitement I felt that day. I can tell you even the clothes that I wore that day so many years ago. I grew up with the Beatles and they have and always will be a part of my life. My kids and grandkids grew up to the Beatles music and it made them fans. My oldest son is a big Beatles fan and so is my granddaughter. My son and I have went to Ringo’s concerts and Paul’s. We took my granddaughter to one of each Ringo’s and Paul’s concerts. I wanted her to have that unexplainable experience. She loved them! John’s murder devastated me. To this day I find it hard to listen to Imagine without tearing up. I won’t be seeing this movie because I don’t want to even imagine a world without the Beatles! They have been too big a part of my life!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hello Janice, and thank you for your wonderful post! Wow, thank you for sharing your experiences with seeing the Beatles live in concert. I also really got a kick out of you sharing the fact that your children and grandchildren love them as well. Especially that you went to see Paul and Ringo with your son and granddaughter, that's fabulous! I have similar memories as well with my children. Thanks again and take care, Matt
Hi Matt, another great video buddy. I was a Beatles fan from about the age of 3,I still am a huge fan. From the age of 10,I became an Elvis fan and Elvis has been my music hero from that day. I'm now 48 and I've been lucky enough to make life long friends through my love of Elvis and also my love of the Beatles. I totally understand the emotion you felt through this movie. I've been called obsessed by people who don't understand how we as fans feel about the music and lives of Elvis and the Beatles. I disagree with the term obsessed,it's a passion that is within us. Take care buddy 👍
Matt...I've never seen or heard such a deeply heartfelt video in my life ...I'm there with you matt...everything you said rings true for me to...But John Lennon is not dead... he lives in your soul he lives in the recordings, you hear him all around you.!..I am touched by your pain and sentiment...Mike
Gee Mike, I don't know what to say. But I can say that I truly appreciate your kind words about my video. It was from the heart, sincere, and real. I almost did not post it but then I said why not. I like to be honest and wear my heart on my sleeve. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about that moment as well. Take care my friend all the best, Matt
Thank you Matt for your kind words. It was a pleasure for me to write to you about a subject matter that always has been a big part of my life, the Beatles. My kids have grown up with Beatles music always playing in the house. Now, their children, at the tender ages of two through seven, are huge fans already. This magical band and their music has touched everyone of all ages, and that ain’t easy. I’m passing on the link below to my next submission project for the 2020 film festivals. Once on the page, towards the right, you can click on the trailer to view it. The actual Short is password protected. The film festivals have strict rules about premier rights. I hope you enjoy the trailer. Please let me know your opinion either way. Hope to talk soon Matt. You’re never too old to create, and you’re never too young to enjoy Beatles music. Be well. Phil C. filmfreeway.com/4EverFab-ABeatlesTributemusicvideobyTheAtomikAgeProject
Hey Phil, thanks for the link to the trailer. I will check it out as soon as I get a chance. I happen to be working today. And I love that you have passed on your joy of The Beatles and their music to your children and your children's children. I must admit, I am in the same boat. Both of my sons love the band and my oldest son has my only two grandchildren right now, and the older boy, age 4 likes the Beatles. So there you go! The magic keeps going on and on. All the best to you, take care. Matt
Lovely review, Matt. I, too, thought the scene with John was very poignant especially when Jack hugged him and with tears in eyes said, "You made it to 78!" I am one of those "original" fans. I was 12 when they came on the scene and it's been a life long love affair with the Beatles. All in all a very enjoyable movie. And emotional for those of us who loved John and the Beatles and still do. Thank you for your beautiful sentiments regarding John. Well said. Best to you.
Thank you Shari for your kind words about my review. I appreciate it very much. It seems like so many Beatles fans have had the same reaction to the movie and the scene with John at age 78. At the minimum, the movie is bringing awareness of The Beatles to folks who perhaps we're not that into them. Take care and all the best to you, Matt
Loved the movie - A++ - loved that scene as well. Very grateful that permission was given for it and though I was a child at that time in history, I still remember being very upset and knowing what a tragedy it was. I'm so glad someone made a movie which was enjoyable and reasonably original rather than a retread or a sequel or a prequel. Hope to see it again if I can con someone into going with me, or maybe I'll just go myself.
Hello, thanks for stopping by and check it out my video review. Also so happy you enjoyed the movie. Yes I'm thinking of going again. I think a lot of people are. It was that good. Take care, Matt
Day after John was shot, i was in a refrigeration school at the time. No body said a single word about him at all...as that is how society is. It's a personal thing and no on like to open up. So, i said something like, isn't it so bad about John Lennon last night..to one of the classmates in the parking lot. His very words and i remember ..were, " He was the backbone of that group" (nothing very poignent about it). I'm sure it was on alot of minds, but most weren't supposed to bring that up except in privacy. I sat at my own table at my mother's while my brother in law talked about it with my mother and rest. I sat there holding in tears. They knew 1% about the Beatles compared to my 99. And didn't even listen to them. It was just a good topic topic like always in this world, to talk about.
I see what you're seeing, and feel what you're feeling about all the things that you spoke of here. John's killing was a kick in the gut to me and to millions of people around the world. I only watched the film once, but I agree that it was a really strong artistic statement. I suppose that an irreverent way to get emotionally refreshed (which I'm sure that John would have appreciated) is to watch "The Rutles" again. After too much of the heartbreaking harshness of things, we need something irreverent and delightful, like that.
Thanks for your time in making this review. I especially liked the part where the two thanked him for sharing the songs because they didn't have the ability. Because let's be honest, if you could remember The Beatles but couldn't hear the music, that would just be a nightmare!
You're right my friends, not remembering their music would be a tragic nightmare! Great Point. All the best to you and thanks for checking out my video, Matt
Sounds great. I hadn't heard about it yet. The last scene you described made me teary. Now I must get out and see it. Thank you for the great review. I remember when they first came to America, and I was (and probably always be) an avid fan because I'd already heard a song or two of theirs before they arrived here. And like many of the young girls of my generation, we devored any article and clipped every magazine pic and article that so much as mentioned them. AND bought everything they recorded. Because my friends and I grew up in Iowa with no chance to go to their concerts in America, we all piled into a car with a disgruntled dad to see A Hard Day's Night and Help. I once bought a black hat like John wore in some of his photos. I hope it's still in my memory trunk. They changed music forever, but sometimes the price of fame is a hard one. Thank you, sir.
Thank you Susan for your great post. I appreciate all your insights growing up as a fan in Iowa and enjoying their movies. As for scrapbooks, yes I can relate, I did a series of videos not too far back where I highlight some of my old scrapbooks from the 70s. Check it out. Thanks again and take care, Matt
Wonderful movie. I remember, age 7, watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. This movie hit me so unexpectedly in the heart. I was blown away by the John Lennon scene. Wow. Truly captured Lennon as he would have been...39 years after he left us. I want to see this movie again, and again. Oh, and great review, Matt!
Hello Bill and thank you for your kind words about my review. I also appreciated you sharing your thoughts about the movie In The Beatles in general. You said it all. Take care, Matt
I see you're wearing a rubber soul jacket there...lol. I have to see that movie. My old man turned me on to rubber soul record, American release when I was 10. Loved it. I became a Beatle fanatic. Did you know that the sheep dog on Paul is live CD. When he's crossing abbey road is actually Martha's son ?
I was confused at times about whether this was a comedy. The acting great, story great, music great, loved Ed. When John came on, totally unexpected I started crying. I felt this was the purpose of this alternative reality, John got to live. When he said he had a happy life and that means he was successful, so beautiful.
Yes Cindy, you are so right. Although it's not an oscar-worthy movie, it was a very touching story and a fun 2 hours. Very special moment when John appeared. Take care, Matt
This was a good honest review. I'm looking forward to it. I saw Joe Mayo's review too , but even knowing what's coming I'm still seeing it. Always good to see a movie with someone with the same interests. Some people may miss Coke , Cigarettes & Harry Potter , But most if not all miss John Lennon. Take care.
This is a very touching video. I have not seen the movie but I plan to. Thanks for sharing your feelings about John. I was 9 when we lost him and I still haven’t gotten over it. Take care!
Thank you William for your kind words about the video. I hope you have an opportunity to see you soon and I am sure you will enjoy it immensely. All the best Matt
If you want to listen to a group that is as close to the Beatles as I think anyone can be, pull up a band called, 'The Analogues.' HELP, A Day In The Life (including the final piano chord), Sgt Pepper. Amazing performances!
Each of us have musicians that touch our hearts. For me, that person is Marty Robbins. His songwriting and voice just connects to my soul. I just wish I could have met him and attend one of his live shows.
Great review. It makes me wonder what has been cut out of 'Yesterday'. In the IMDB, David Lautman plays Ring Starr. Yes that scene at the end was so emotional.
Hello, great post. Yes I also look forward to the DVD and Blu-ray when they come out. Hopefully they'll will be a lot of extras on there. Thanks again, Matt
Thanks Harold, I truly appreciate your thoughts on my review. And I am so happy you saw the movie and loved it. I hope to get the soundtrack myself very soon. Take care, Matt
My wife and I went to see this movie today and we both burst into tears the moment the John scene started, we found that part very emotional and to see him aged 78 was almost too much. But on a lighter note we both found the movie very enjoyable and would have liked the music to have been a bit more balanced towards John, but that's just a minor criticism. I am with you on your emotional bit at the end of your video - the world IS a sadder place without John, and a day never passes when he is not in my thoughts.
Hello vertical man, and thanks for your great thoughts about you and your lady seeing the film. It really brings it all home to hear that others are having the same reaction. Thank you for being here in participating. All the best, Matt
Hi matthew!! i saw the movie for the first time yesterday that´s why i am making a comment now. but the part when john appears is so touching, so emotional, i feel so identified with what you said, you know, there is no day of my life when i don´t think about john being here as an old man. i liked the movie and the concept of what if the beatles didn´t exist, it reminded me a little of back to the future 2, when marty and doc brown come back to the alternate 1985 and they are the only ones who know 1985 as they lived. and to finish, if ringo would have had a cameo, he would have been portrayed as a hairdresser, that´s what he wanted to be if the beatles would not last 10 years, remember that he would have offered a cup of tea to the ladies customers. well bye my friend!!
Thank you for your very insightful post Hernan. I appreciate comments like yours because they are so in important and interesting. I too, very much enjoyed this movie. And I do wish Paul and Ringo had also had cameos in it. All the best you for the holidays and take care, Matt
I live in the town where the film was set. Loved the film, and agree that the JL scene is very moving. I loved Lily James too - her performance was excellent.
Great review!!! And well said! The Beatles have played a huge part in my life as well; I cannot imagine a world without them and their magical musical (just noticed I inadvertently threw out the titles of John Lennon's best songs there 😁). Speaking of,,,,that scene...whoa! Totally unexpected and is the defining moment for the film and its message. The movie, for me, was getting a B- and then that scene automatically elevated it to a B+. The movie was fun as you say, but it was gearing more towards a cliche chick flick...and the concept of a world without The Beatles' music is WAY to huge of an idea to seve as a platform for something so mundane. My theory is that this present day world does not deserve The Beatles music in its purest form and only the pure at heart would know of the history. He was actually visiting John Lennon as he is and would be in Heaven...that's just my take on it. God bless you for such a moving and sincere review! One thing I'd like to add is that I wish they'd show George, being passed on as well, too. I think George wrote one of the best songs ever produced Here Comes The Sun.
Hello Joker, and thank you for your kind words about my review. I truly appreciate your thoughts. It sounds like you and I had many of the same insights about the movie and we gave it the same grade. I truly enjoyed reading your post about it. Take care and thanks again, Matt
Hi Matt I just got back from seeing the movie yesterday. Well actually I saw today not yesterday haha. I like the first part of the movie The Best there seem to be some Beetle ask humor and words here and they're more so than in the last part of the movie. When the main character I believe his name is Jack was about to go up on the roof of the hotel and play. He was having to go through a couple of hallways which I thought was reminiscent of A Hard Day's Night and also in the first part of the movie where that British performer can't do his house or his parents house I should say he was wearing a shirt I believe have the words on it that said hoax very clever. there was also a residual effect on me from the movie. While I was sitting there watching the movie and hearing these Beatles songs. Memories of my dad and I watching any programming with the Beatles on television came to mind. A few tears came to my eyes. But also I really liked the scene with the Elder John Lennon that was cool. It was a good movie and as Beatles fans are fortunate to be able to watch this movie God bless you take care!
Thanks David, so glad you enjoyed the movie. I also appreciate your great insights and thoughts about the movie and how it related to The Beatles Etc. Thank you so much for sharing. All the best, Matt
Beautifully said mate 👍🏻I really enjoyed the movie , so did my 15 year old niece who really thinks the Beatles are cool. Yeah must admit I felt the lump in the throat when I saw the Lennon scene , very well done & a nice little nod to the man I thought 😎
Hello Naz, and thanks for your kind words about my video. Also I'm so happy you had the opportunity to enjoy the movie with your niece. That must have been a special moment to share together. All the best, Matt
Hello Matt! I’m a young’un here at the age of 17 turning 18, and I just have to say I love your enthusiasm regarding this movie... I love the Beatles and the music of the era so much (but I listen to all genres, including rap haha I don’t want to stay stuck in the past) and I’m looking forward to watching the movie very soon! Also, What did you think of the Queen movie?
Hello Yuv, and thank you so much for being part of my channel. I always appreciate it when younger folks stop in and become interested. I especially love the fact that you love the Beatles. I Am like you, I love my older music, especially the Beatles, but I also love newer music as well. Just go back a couple of videos and I talked about a new and upcoming band from New York City that I'm really into. They're called the midnight callers. As for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody? I loved it! I saw it a couple of times and look forward to getting the DVD or Blu-ray. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. All the best to you my young friend and thanks for being here. Take care, Matt
Man, you are soooo right about the Beatles. Everything you say gets two thumbs up from me.👍👍I'll have to check out the movie, I've been wondering about it...but nothing can compare to just playing those original records. By the way, I wonder what you think of the fabulous Rutles lol-I assume you'll know that movie, isnt it hilarious. I wonder what Paul thinks of that movie lol. Best wishes!😁
@Topazthecat Yeah I heard that. I prefer to think he might think it was funny-especially bits like when the press ask him about drugs and he confesses: Yes Ive had tea, lots of tea..." and adds as an afterthought:"....and biscuits" I mean its bloody hilarious. 😁👍
Hi Matt great review. Yes I agree with you The scene with John was the best bit Of the whole movie. You couldn't help But think what if! It was a bit strange in Some parts. But the music was good So that saved it really. Thanks for posting.
Agreed Barbara! The scene with John and the music was the best part. They should've developed the Beatles angle more, and less on the romantic comedy stuff. A missed opportunity. Cheers Matt
There are times in history that it would be nice to have a time machine too correct the tragedies we see in our lifetimes. The day John Lennon was taken from us was one of those times that needed changing. He was a funny, talented, kind and influential human being. Losing him was indeed a tragedy. There will never be another like him. So sad.
Watching your review and during it, it got me to thinking. It got me to thinking about the concept within the movie that after the accident, there had never been The Beatles. And it got me to thinking that, in order for that to have happened, John would have never met Paul, because as we all now, when John met Paul, that was the creation of their partnership and their shared road that resulted in creating The Beatles. So all of this thinking got me to pinpoint what would have to have happened. From The Rough Guide to The Beatles, pg. 3: "When Ivan Vaughan suggested to his 15-year-old school friend Paul McCartney that he might want to come to St Peter's Church fete in Woolton, on Saturday July 6 1957, to see his mate John Lennon play in his skiffle group, The Quarry Men, he added as further incentive that it might be a good place to pick up girls." I will condense the next paragraph in which Paul does indeed attend the fete and does indeed meet and impress John with several songs that he played for him. All of this just got me to thinking-in order for the cosmic accident to be reality, what would have needed to happen, would be Ivan did not have a 15-year-old Paul McCartney as a school chum. Or Ivan COULD still have Paul as a school friend BUT did not have John as a mate and did not know of John's skiffle group. I guess there could be variables. Anyway, in the movie Yesterday, Jack could have asked John if he had ever played any music. I could just imagine the 78 year old John answering …."oh yes but that was a long long time ago. When I was a kid, I had a little skiffle band but you know....kids are kids and nothing ever came from it." Anyway, Matt so your review got me to speculating on all of this and it was fun to imagine what would have had to take place, or not take place, in order for there to have never been a Beatles.
I saw the Beatles live...2x's//// wowowow during the mania...65// once at the airport at midnight..as they landed on KC....wow... got a moment eye contact from John! Blew my 15 yr old mind!!!!!!!
Just seen the movie Matt and agree the scene with John was so touching I welled up in the cinema. It should have lasted longer! Do you think he was on the island off Ireland that John & Yoko hoped to retire too? I also welled up at your show of emotion Matt and agree with everything you said. By the way have you seen the film Let Him Be? There's an excellent portrayal of an elder John Lennon in that film as well. Thanks Matt for another great video...
Thanks Eddie for your kind words about my video. I truly appreciate it. No I have not seen that other film, but I will try to check it out now. Thanks for the tip. Glad you enjoyed the movie and thanks again, Matt
Hello Kim, and thank you for your kind words about my review. I really appreciate it. Glad you stopped by and checked out my Channel. All the best to you and happy Fourth of July, Matt
I hate to change the subject but, I am in the Philippines right now, and I would love to see a recreation of The Beatles well documented visit to this country in 1966. I enjoyed your review, I hope to see the film here before I return home.
Hello Peter thank you for checking out my video. And I appreciate your kind words. Yes, that would be something to see a Beatles documentary about their visit to the Philippines. Count Me In. All the best, Matt
This is really BEAUTIFUL... (I'm a NEWCOMER to your videos...) Regarding the 'YESTERDAY' movie, I GUESS some 'Beatles' fans might 'pooh-pooh' or dismiss it, but I don't agree... I'd watch ANYTHING that references that band... At the CORE of the movie is THAT MUSIC/THOSE SONGS... (As you say, the movie IS NOT 'Citizen Kane'...) That said, there will be Young People who see this movie who, TRULY, have never knowingly heard a Beatles song!!! And, maybe, JUST MAYBE, they'll be inspired to discover the originals... Friend, I APPRECIATE your honesty and emotion... Thank You. xx SF
Gee Steve, thank you for your kind words. I truly appreciate it. Yes, as you said, anything that can bring attention to the Beatles for people, and especially young people in general, is okay by me! I really had a good time with the movie and loved hearing the different take on their music. All the best to you and take care, Matt
Nice review Matt. I agree, a pretty good film and loved that scene with Lennon. It made it worth it for me. And, it also made me angrier at that moron who took his life. In addition, I liked that not only did the Beatles not exist but some other things too.
Amazing, beautiful review! ONE correction though.... John wouldn't "have changed" the world ( ;) I get your point though).. he DID change the world and still does to this very day
Im 61. Anyone alive in Feb 64 know that when the Beatles came on the Sullivan show, the world would not be the same. And for Americans, the Beatles got us out of our grieving the loss of JFK.
Matt great review. I left a detailed review on Joe’s site but yeah I left the theater very underwhelmed. I gave it 2 out of 4 stars. Not a huge fan of the lead actor. I am in the minority but the whole “other dimension” storyline is so far fetched. I am actually happy Paul and Ringo did not appear in a very average movie. I will not get the CD or Blu Ray. Glad I saw it but won’t go out of my way to see it again. Hopefully this movie will give a sales spike to the Beatles group CD/Vinyl catalog. I actually could not care less about “who had more songs” in the movie stuff.
Hello Astrosjer...I can totally relate to what you're saying. This movie is definitely not for everybody. Many of the aspects of it are not for everyone. But as you said, it is bringing awareness of The Beatles and their music to a larger audience. So for that alone, I think it's a great thing. And I must say that you have to admit, the John Lennon scene alone was worth the price of admission. At least we can dream. All the best to you and thanks for participating, Matt
Music people may not get it. My dad really liked the Beatles! Because I liked the monkeys and the Beatles. I wanted to be in a band. I did that in my life. My friend who is a preacher. Said he was a decent man. On the night John left my preacher friend played no ware man on his religious show. When I first heard John Lennon on the radio give an interview as he was about to return to recording once again. And then they played a couple of songs that hadn't been released. John sounded like the Beatles I don't know how else to put it. They all made the Beatles sound like the Beatles. But when John played the music on Double Fantasy and those kind of albums he sounds like the Beatles. She never left his style. God bless Matt
Thank you David for sharing such wonderful information about your friend back in the day. I appreciate it. Yes, John was a special person in musician. And we will remember him forever. All the best, Matt
i really did not enjoy this movie and thought it wasted the idea it went with, but the John Lennon appearance at the end made me tear up. Unfortunately the movie itself is a 4 or 5 out of 10 for me.
Hey Matt, I don't know what to say. I haven't seen the film. It probably isn't even playing here. Nothing without explosions or Superheroes does. And besides, I haven't even seen Eight Days A Week yet. But I will tell you this, and cross my heart and hope I die if it isn't true, John Lennon's murder ruined my life. But more on that another time. I'm really glad you enjoyed the film and I appreciate your heartbreaking revue. Take care...
Tim, how are you doing? Gee I hope you can find a theater somewhere near you where you'll be able to see it. Is it an oscar-worthy film? Heck no! But it's a fun 2 hours a chance to escape for a little bit, and that scene with John at the end is just heartbreaking. What if? Yes I can relate to you about what happened to John. But, despite it all, we have to find a way to move on and try to live our lives the best we can after such a tragedy. I hope things are okay for you and take care, Matt
Saw the movie on opening day. Really enjoyed it. The theater was full (2 PM show) and half the crowd was over 60 - when "that" scene happened the collective breath was taken away from the crowd in the theater. Your comments put into words what I believe most people in the theater was thinking "what if John were still around?", and "boy it's good to see him"..... A few things I would have liked - a little more effort to showcase George - in the trailers to the film, Jack sings "Something" while on a television show, but that scene did not make the final cut....that would have been great to hear and see. Would have also like if Jack would have tried to Google each member of the group individually by name, just to see if they showed up on the internet.....but it's a movie and you have to suspend some level of reality. Agree with your Kate McKinnon comments - she was a bit too much. But, I guess that is what they were going for.
Hey Joe, that's great that you had a big crowd at your showing. I have to admit I went on a Sunday at 1:30 in the afternoon, and it was still well over half full. So that's pretty good. I also appreciate your great thoughts about the movie. Thanks for being here. All the best, Matt
It's a suede-like shirt I got at a place called Bob's Discount store. A chain here in New England. It was in the clearance rack, believe it or not! So not a replica of John's jacket. Just looks similar to it. Cheers
I'm sorry to disagree, But I really wasn't very taken with this movie. The only thing that differentiated this movie from most chick flicks were the Beatles songs themselves and, of course, the John Lennon scene was awesome. I'm just not a fan of romantic comedies and for me that's where the movie went off the rails for me personally. But seriously I guess any movie that keeps the Beatles flame burning can't be all bad. That said, you almost brought me to tears with the second half of this video brother. Other than my own family and friends, I have never grieved for anyone like I did the day John was taken from us. I think the main reason it affects us all so deeply is because of how senseless it was, how young he was at the time and the fact that he was making a comeback after five years of musical silence. For me personally songs like Just Like Starting Over and Woman were a good indication that John was on the verge of creating some of the best music of his life. Great video Matt. Peace....Steve
MATTHEW, HAVE YOU HEARD YELLOW MATTER CUSTARD, OR THE ANALOGUES, THEY DO VERY GOOD BEATLE SONGS A TO Z, GIVE EM A TRY. JT FROM MEX ( GREAT REVIEW AND THE JOHN ENDING GOT ME HARD )
@@matthewstreet1961 I finally saw it today being Saturday and I give everything about it an A+. The scene with John touched me, when the door was opened and we see John my heart just stopped and I had a lump in my throat. It was a very amazing movie
John Winston Ono Lennon was assassinated on my 28th birthday. I haven't celebrated my birthday since. "I think dying is like getting out of one taxi and entering another. The trip continues."-John
I don't think what you said about the Beatles being a big part of your life is silly at all. I feel that way about Elvis. I've been an Elvis fan since I was very small and can't imagine my life without him in it. He's like a common thread that runs through my life. So although your's is the Beatles, I share that sentiment. I'm sure many others do as well. I thought Yesterday was a good movie. The John Lennon scene was the best! 😊❤️
Hello Elvis fanatic, and thank you for your kind words about my video. And I know that you must be able to relate totally being such an Elvis fan. Thanks again and take care, Matt
The criticism of the song choices is silly if you really saw the movie. They chose songs that Jack remembered. He is a musician, but he wasn't a Beatles scholar. He knows and reveres their music, but he could only play the music as he remembered it. They even acknowledge this when the English lady and the Russian guy meet Jack backstage. They criticize Jack for mixing up the lyrics and he apologizes for not remembering them correctly. You are WAY older than the Jack character so you have a deeper knowledge of the Beatles catalog than he would. The songs chosen for the movie are of course the ones that still get played on the radio. Keeping that in mind, I thought the song choices were perfect.
It is not about the band! Using Beatles music as a prop, it is a love story with a moral conundrum. Was James Camerons "Titanic" about the boat? NO! The boat (ship) was a prop in the love story between Jack and Rose. I am 68 years old , a big Beatles fan and I appreciate the care that they gave to the music. It is not a Karaoke movie. They arranged the music to accommodate a would be street performer, a busker. I recommend the movie! Just try not to have any predisposed expectations. Let them take you on a ride that includes some nostalgia! You will enjoy yourself and THAT is the reason we go to the movies!
Thanks for the great information, you brought up some good points. Yes, the movie is not ready for an Oscar nomination, but it is still a fun little romp and a good time. Thanks for stopping in. All the best, Matt
They showed John because following the theme of the movie he was never in Beatles band. He got murdered because of his fame so seeing John it meant that he was not famous.
Haven't seen it, but from what I've heard elsewhere, the portrayal of John doesn't ring true, especially if he was living alone in that cottage. Even if he'd never met Cynthia or Yoko in this alternate universe, he would be with a woman; he would never have been happy as a bachelor.
In part of the dialogue, he mentions loving a woman so I believe the intent was she was not home at that moment. I distinctly remember that piece of dialogue.
I was thrilled that John got to live a full life in this reality.
Just listened to the soundtrack tonight-I love it!
Ppl who didn't fall in love with the Beatles at an early age don't understand the impact its not jus a rock band. They become family
And philosophy of life.
Well said my friend, very well said! All the best you and thanks for being here. Take care, Matt
In the movie.. there are no cigarettes. Maybe that means George would have lived longer too.
You're making me tear up now... I hope and pray that John is in a better place. Excellent review, Matt.
Thank you so much for your kind words lone Pilgrim. It makes me happy that you truly enjoyed the video. All the best to you, Matt
And to you, as well!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Anna. I really appreciate it. And you are so right that scene was the best part of the movie. All the best, Matt
I know exactly how you feel about the whole John Lennon thing. And even though it's just a fictional movie, it's nice to think that if there's even the slightest possibility that alternate realities do exist, that just maybe John (and George) are living their lives somewhere else in the universe. Great review.
Hello Garrett, thanks for the great post. I truly appreciate your kind thoughts as well about my review. All the best, Matt
Nice job Matt! The appearance of you know who, made me ugly cry in the middle of the theatre. I couldn’t contain myself.
Thank you Caitlin I appreciate your kind words. And I was right there with you, tears in my eyes! What a moment. All the best to you, Matt
Thanks Rosen, good to hear that one of your friends is really into it as well. Thanks for stopping by. Take care, Matt
its grieving for the lost potential of a great singer/songwriter.
Great vid, Greg from New Orleans. Saw them live 1965 in New Orleans on a school night at age 15.
Hey Greg, thanks for the kind words. Wow, that amazes me that you had the opportunity to see them in New Orleans all those years ago. You must have some cool memories. All the best, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 The ticket price $5.00!!
Greg Guzzardi, I only got to see & hear them on The Ed Sullivan Show & I still haven’t forgotten it. #WeLoveYouBeatles❤️
Great review, Matt. Excellent video. Very beautiful and touching. Take care.
Thank you for the kind words Sunshine Superman. I appreciate it. Take care, Matt
'John Lennon' was played by Robert Carlyle, you know the Scots Guy who had to be put in subtitles in RiffRaff, not even a professional actor back then, now doing a perfect Liverpool accent. Robert Carlyle has had a journey ....
Hello Carole and thank you for the great information about the actor Robert Carlyle. I appreciate it. All the best, Matt
Carole von Aarberg Robert was brilliant, the real star of the movie, for me. I cried like a baby.
Great movie Sarah! Happy new Year!Cheers Matt
Original music A+. Movie presentation of the music B. Movie itself C. John Lennon scene A+
Hello Cat, and I do like your grading system.
Matthew Street Thanks Matt for your nice words. 😊💕
Really fantastic review. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you James. I appreciate the nice thought. All the best, Matt
Great post Colin! Thanks for checking out this video! Glad you're here! Cheers Matt

Great point Eric, I need The Rutles during dark times like this! Thank you! Cheers 🍻
When he's crossing abbey road is actually Martha's son ?
so right about having John here all these yrs...he wouldve helped so much!!!!!!
Hello Rudy, yes John would have made a big difference in the world. All the best, Matt
Take care.
Hello Lengo, excellent post and I appreciate your insights. Hope you enjoy the movie. But I know you will. All the best and take care, Matt
Hello, and thanks for the great information! I have heard of the analogs, and I will check them out. Take care, Matt
Great and touching video. I am 59 and I get it. Peace and Love.
Thank you Ken, yes at our age we definitely do get it! Haha! All the best and thanks again, Matt
Each of us have musicians that touch our hearts. For me, that person is Marty Robbins. His songwriting and voice just connects to my soul. I just wish I could have met him and attend one of his live shows.
You are so right and Marty Robbins was a great artist. Take care Matt
Thank you Matt for your nice personal words in this video.
You're welcome Bert! I appreciate your kind words. Cheers Matt
Great video Mathew I hope to see it tonight.
I saw it and I loved it. and I got the soundtrack.
Thanks Harold, I truly appreciate your thoughts on my review. And I am so happy you saw the movie and loved it. I hope to get the soundtrack myself very soon. Take care, Matt
Matthew John is not dead-he is asleep in the loving arms of the Lord.
Hello RB, thank you for stopping by and I really appreciate you commenting on this video. Take care...Matt
your emotions ring loud & true my friend and i for one can say i feel you speak for many of us with your words on John
Thank you Ralph for your kind words. I appreciate it and glad you enjoyed my review. Take care, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 Thanks Matthew and I look forward to your other reviews...it sounds like we think in a similar way.
Thx for your review! Yes, we get it! Love & Big Hugs! :)
Thank you for the kind words Sabrina! All the best to you, Matt
Beautifully said mate 👍🏻I really enjoyed the movie , so did my 15 year old niece who really thinks the Beatles are cool.
Yeah must admit I felt the lump in the throat when I saw the Lennon scene , very well done & a nice little nod to the man I thought 😎
PS love the Rubber Soul jacket, VERY cool .
Hello Naz, and thanks for your kind words about my video. Also I'm so happy you had the opportunity to enjoy the movie with your niece. That must have been a special moment to share together. All the best, Matt
PS, thanks for your compliment about my jacket!
Beautiful review!!! Wow man!!!
Thank you, thank you Paul for your kind words about my review. Much appreciated, Matt
Yes I agree with you
The scene with John was the best bit
Of the whole movie. You couldn't help
But think what if! It was a bit strange in
Some parts. But the music was good
So that saved it really. Thanks for posting.
Agreed Barbara! The scene with John and the music was the best part. They should've developed the Beatles angle more, and less on the romantic comedy stuff. A missed opportunity. Cheers Matt
John will always be THE greatest artist that ever lived!! Cried my eyes out when he was taken from us.
I hear you Charles and I am with you my friend. You said it all. Take care, Matt
There are times in history that it would be nice to have a time machine too correct the tragedies we see in our lifetimes. The day John Lennon was taken from us was one of those times that needed changing. He was a funny, talented, kind and influential human being. Losing him was indeed a tragedy. There will never be another like him. So sad.
You've said it all my friend, you said it all. Take care, Matt
Lots of great insights there Paul! Thank you for sharing them with us here. I appreciate it. Take care and all the best, Matt
I saw the Beatles live...2x's//// wowowow during the mania...65// once at the airport at midnight..as they landed on KC....wow... got a moment eye contact from John! Blew my 15 yr old mind!!!!!!!
Wow Rudy! Such wonderful and great memories about seeing the Beatles! I truly appreciate you sharing it here. All the best, Matt
❤❤❤
I LOVE The Beatles....!! 🎸
That's fantastic Olle! Me too! Thanks for stopping by! Take care, Matt
More than a movie review, but a moving oratory. Thanks for saying what we all feel.
Thank you doc, I appreciate your kind words. All the best my friend, Matt
Great review, some of the other reviews I have seen totaling missed the mark. Thank you.
PS Steve...and welcome! Glad you stopped in!
Nice review Matt. I agree, a pretty good film and loved that scene with Lennon. It made it worth it for me. And, it also made me angrier at that moron who took his life. In addition, I liked that not only did the Beatles not exist but some other things too.
Hello Joe, great post! You are so right, I still Harbor a lot of anger and resentment towards that nitwit. Thanks again and take care, Matt
Thanks for this. I’m still on the fence but very interested.
You're welcome, and hope you have a chance to see the movie. Take care, Matt
STILL HURTS UNTIL THESE DAYS, HIS LOST .
Hello Juan, and you are so right my friend, it's still hurts. Take care, Matt
Amazing, beautiful review! ONE correction though.... John wouldn't "have changed" the world ( ;) I get your point though).. he DID change the world and still does to this very day
Hello rexbo, yes sir he sure did change the world! Great point! Thanks for your kind words about my video I truly appreciate it. All the best, Matt
Im 61. Anyone alive in Feb 64 know that when the Beatles came on the Sullivan show, the world would not be the same. And for Americans, the Beatles got us out of our grieving the loss of JFK.
Great points Bronco. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Take care, Matt
I would agree. I can’t say I’m as enthused as I was with it. The John scene touched me. Beyond that, it was a letdown
Is it a replica of the suede coat or a look o like
It's a suede-like shirt I got at a place called Bob's Discount store.
Peace....Steve
u said it well..// i was very disappointed....it did nothing really for The Beatles... some moments but weak.....the Lennon thing was interesting.....
MATTHEW, HAVE YOU HEARD YELLOW MATTER CUSTARD, OR THE ANALOGUES, THEY DO VERY GOOD BEATLE SONGS A TO Z, GIVE EM A TRY. JT FROM MEX ( GREAT REVIEW AND THE JOHN ENDING GOT ME HARD )
Thanks so much JT! I will check them out! Peace, Matt
Nice review Matt. I personally liked the comedy parts of the film.
Hello neuron, yes the comedy parts were very good. Thanks for stopping in and checking out my video. All the best, Matt
Before I can enjoy this Matthew I have to wait till I see the movie
Did you see the movie yet James? If so, what did you think? All the best, Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 I'm going to see it on Saturday this weekend
Have fun, enjoy it!
@@matthewstreet1961 I finally saw it today being Saturday and I give everything about it an A+. The scene with John touched me, when the door was opened and we see John my heart just stopped and I had a lump in my throat. It was a very amazing movie
I've got to admit I did shead a few tears during the John Lennon scene
Yes, it was hard not to. Thanks, Matt
You got the rubber soul outfit there
Yeah this an older video, but I still have the hat and shirt. Nice getting to chat with you today at Mayos house! Cheers
You're wearing a Help! cap and Rubber Soul jacket mashup
I like that Ray a help and Rubber Soul mashup! Haha! Take care buddy, Matt
I noticed that too.
John Winston Ono Lennon was assassinated on my 28th birthday. I haven't celebrated my birthday since. "I think dying is like getting out of one taxi and entering another. The trip continues."-John
I love that quote you provided Robert, and thank you so much for posting here. All the best to you, Matt
I loved it.
Hey Evan, glad to hear it. I enjoyed it myself! All the best, Matt
MATT I WILL PROBABLY GET A MOVIE POSTER. I WILL SEE IT NEXT WEEK
Hey David, that sounds like a great idea getting the movie poster. Good luck with it. All the best and enjoy the movie! Take care, Matt
All the best, Matt
the plot of the alternate reality reminds me of Shrek the 4th,
Good point my friend! Good point. Take care, Matt
They showed John because following the theme of the movie he was never in Beatles band. He got murdered because of his fame so seeing John it meant that he was not famous.
You're right Annie, that is very true. Thanks for stopping by. All the best, Matt
Haven't seen it, but from what I've heard elsewhere, the portrayal of John doesn't ring true, especially if he was living alone in that cottage. Even if he'd never met Cynthia or Yoko in this alternate universe, he would be with a woman; he would never have been happy as a bachelor.
Yeah, you make a good point, I guess we just have to suspend disbelief and go with it. All in all it was a very enjoyable movie. Take care, Matt
In part of the dialogue, he mentions loving a woman so I believe the intent was she was not home at that moment. I distinctly remember that piece of dialogue.
