    Its Monday 5/20/24 and I'm watching this again because of the power outages going on now . I like your idea if you ever move you take it with you. The whole home back up generator business is going to boom in Houston and I will not pay those high prices. This is a great alternative but I'm concerned of the long term reliability of the genny. Thanks Gavin for your videos and hope you got power.

      I have the Genmax9000ied - got me thru the derecho and now Beryl running my whole home (including central air). With a soft start on your a/c and the setup like Gavin does so you can just plug into your house and switch it to run it all, its the way to go if you live here. Am upgrading to this one though to be able to run off natural gas. For the money, think it will get you thru a few years, when the next greatest thing is available.

    This is a great machine. I got mine on Friday!
    I did learn, though, that while they kindly include a 120v style plug (NEMA 5-15P) as a ground-neutral bonding plug, the GFCIs on the generator don't really like it and will trip, which cuts off the neutral path and breaks the bond (I was running it stand-alone not connected to my inlet and this generator is floating neutral). My fix, since I'm not using the 50 amp outlet and that outlet is not GFCI protected, was to take the 50 amp plug that they include and made it into a ground-neutral bond. Problem solved!

    • @normangarrett1033
      @normangarrett1033 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I don't think you can use bonding plugs on GFCI outlets, so your solution is great. If one is using the 50 amp plug, you could use the 30 amp for the bonding plug as well. Of course, the bonding plug just lets you use the outlets like a worksite machine, so it's not something you would be using while the unit is plugged into your house.

    Great review. I've been looking at which generator to get for a few years. Recently found out the benefits of the inverter gens. And yes, the soft start is a must have even without the need for a gen. And natural gas is also the way I want to go. Perfect setup. U covered it all in a great video. The only concern I have is the warranty on this gen. Parts? I also want to find out how to bypass the CO sensor which is not only a weak point in these inverter gens, but while they are connected, you can enclose these units in a properly vented sound shield box.

    A wireless display (or smart phone app) to monitor power utilization, fuel level, and better yet, a way to toggle smart idle on and off, would all be awesome and welcomed features!
    I installed a magnetic drain plug and magnetic dipstick in my Predator 9500. Genmax should include them from the factory as another bonus feature. (Or preferably switch to pressurized lubrication and an oil filter, but I’m asking for a lot.)

      I saw that but for a little more, you could buy two of these and run them in parallel. Plus (for me) this is a tri fuel and I plan on using NG. Also, I just spoke with Gavin and he confirmed the two units running in parallel will be running a lot quite that this one.

    The "ultimate" generator is a diesel generator that runs at 1800 rpms, but has been converted to run on natural gas. I'm currently looking at a 14.5k watts for $8,700. The system is rated for 30,000 hours before it needs to be overhauled. They also have a 21k version for $10,000. It uses very little fuel compared to a 3600 rpm generator. You can directly plumb it into your home's natural gas supply and have unlimited fuel.

    • @mwahlert
      @mwahlert ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everyone has a different definition of “ultimate”. I agree that a diesel 1800rpm machine makes for an excellent permanently installed standby generator, but you can’t easily pick that up and take it with you. These higher capacity portable inverter units are so versatile.

      @fb510m I have a similar model that's 13k ,I see no reason to transport my home generator to different locations, It's just for my home ,so if you want something to take to different locations , get a smaller model possibly, Mine has wheels and I have a small 12 foot trailer with a drop down ramp, if I did want to transport it, that isn't a problem and can be loaded in 2 minutes,I feel a generator is a tool that you use a limited number of times in 5 years, so just having it available to run your heat, ac ,refrigerator and freezer in case of emergency, That is the main thing ,it's just to get you by till power is back, we had a tornado come thru 2 years ago, we had no power for a week, my portable generator powered my entire home for 1 week until we got power back, we ran it from 6 am till 9 pm daily, then went to bed and it was fine, From 9 until 6 am ,we plugged our refrigerator and freezer into a bluetti inverter battery in the evenings when the gas generator was off and this system worked great while others had nothing for a week in our area, All I can say is for the 1 time or 2 you may need a generator every few years , the money is well spent .

    Assuming you have enough battery capacity to last for several days, if a secondary dedicated solar recharge panel array failed to charge the batteries, the generator would be the solution for automatic failover to recharge them. At that a lower capacity generator.

    Let me correct you on your Generator:
    Its NOT 10.5kW on NG ... as you keep stating.
    Its 8400W starting and 6800W running on NG ...
    You were at 5700W with that 5 ton AC which means you were at 83% capacity. If you were to run the microwave or stove or dryer while the ac was ON, you would blow that breaker on the generator.

      On my 3.5ton heat pump/ac I went from over 100amps of locked rotor rating (I never actually measured starting amps before) to 25amps with a microair easystart. Not only is it a much better ball park for a generator, my utility bills went down and lights don't dim when it comes on which was a problem in certain rooms, usually those with dimmer switches.

    Hey Gavin, I just bought the Pulsar version of this generator, trying to run a 4 ton Carrier AC unit with a soft start on natural gas, just like you.
    Unfortunately, mine won’t start it! It actually wouldn’t even start a 3.5 ton unit while it was on low idle mode.
    The only difference I can see between your setup and mine is that I am using the 30A outlet, not 50A. My old Champion 100520 could start that AC on 30A, so I expected the Pulsar could too. I’m not tripping any breakers on the house or the generator, so I can’t really process through why I would need a 50 amp instead of a 30 amp, but again it’s the only difference I see from where you were able to do this successfully.
    Am I wrong? Do I need a 50A inlet for the pulsar to kick on the AC with the soft start?

    • @GeneratorReviews

    I haven't seen this issue mentioned much so maybe it's a non-issue, but I'm wondering if people have problems running a heat pump with their generator when the heat pump enters a defrost cycle. Since connecting my air handler to an emporia energy monitor I've realized that my air handler jumps from 500 watts to 10kw for a couple minutes every couple hours, likely running heat strips during a defrost cycle.
    The rest of the time my whole house including the 3 ton heat pump uses under 7kw. I'm left wondering if even after installing an easy start I'll need to find a way to disable the aux heat for defrost cycles, or if I should just plan on using space heaters unless I get a 2nd 10500iETC to parallel.

    • @GeneratorReviews
      @GeneratorReviews  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s most likely exactly like you said your heat strips are coming online requiring a higher demand. Is there anyway you can deactivate that?

    • @NurseAcrobat
      @NurseAcrobat 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GeneratorReviews From what I've read so far, heat strips in the air handler can be either triggered by the thermostat for aux/emergency heat or by heat pump itself for maintaining comfort when the heat pump goes into defrost mode and basically switches to ac mode blowing cold air for a couple minutes.
      Nothing I do at the thermostat can prevent the communication coming from the heat pump for heat strips to come on during defrost so the advice I've seen is to disconnect the W wire from the low voltage junction box at the heat pump, with it making no difference in the defrost performance, just the comfort of anyone near the hvac vents while defrost occurs. I'm hoping it would work to install an inline low voltage switch somewhere between the heat pump and the air handler so that I can just disable the heat strips when needing to use generator power vs needing to open the panel and insert/remove a wire if/when I want to change it.
      All of this is odd because I didn't even think the air handler had heat strips since the paperwork I received with the house listed heat strips as an option that wasn't selected and even on days when the temperature has been below 20F my whole house energy use has rarely topped 7kw per hour, so it was a surprise to see energy use for the air handler alone bump up to 10kw. The frequency and duration matches when I should expect defrost to occur. The air handler and heat strips must share a circuit as there is only one cable going to it, rated at 60 amps/240 volts, on a 90 amp subpanel running nothing else. The large gauge wiring had been reused from the prior system so I had thought it was simply funny to have a 500 watt fan on a 90 amp dedicated panel. The heat pump is on a separate 40 amp circuit on the main panel.

    • @NurseAcrobat
      @NurseAcrobat 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GeneratorReviews I unhooked and capped the white low voltage thermostat wire from the heat pump defrost board and now defrost runs fine without triggering the heat strips. I haven't noticed any discomfort from the heat strips not running. It would be easy to reconnect if desired.

    • @projectswithjw
      @projectswithjw 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heat strips typically have a dedicated breaker in the panel. Find that and turn off. Defrost will blow cold air while heat strips are disabled but will be fine as long as the compressor can still generate heat with the outdoor temperatures. Some compressors are disabled in negative temps and heat strips become primary in that situation. Then it would be better to throw the compressor breaker off and run strips in emergency heat mode.

    • @NurseAcrobat
      @NurseAcrobat 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@projectswithjw A separate circuit would be helpful. My air handler apparently shares a 60 amp circuit with the heat strips. My heat pump manual has heat efficiency data down to -5F. It's only twice as efficient as resistance heat at 10F but it rarely gets below 15F here in NC.
