The Hydrofoil Waterstart (N 2 Minutes)

  • This video is a quick overview of the Hydrofoil Waterstart. Many kiters are not transitioning into the hydrofoil kite world for a number of reasons. It can certainly be intimidating at first to think of cruising around with so much going on below the surface of the water. This is a general overview of the elements required for a successful water start. This series on N 2 minutes is directed to the individual that just wants a taste of the possible requirement needed to perform a skill. It is in no way fully comprehensive. It does not cover the "riding of the bull" piece for the beginner foiler due to its brevity.

For us, having a SHORT (40 cm) mast made all the difference when it came to learning the hydrofoil. Also removing that back binding helped a lot, just like you have with your setup. Having the back foot right on top of the mast was the key. Great video :)

Completely agree with the short mast for learning to foil, especially with the "riding of the bull" effect early on. I just don't like a back strap and enjoy moving my back foot all over the board and I have a really narrow stance (I'm short, plus other things). This also means I can't jump at this point. I have friends who are fine riding "on foil" with 30" + masts, but when winds get light, they struggle on their starts because of lack of efficiency.

Best description and views that I have seen on foiling. Thank you!

Thanks drlile. Almost headed your way this Feb. But we continued our stay on 30A instead of further west for a week and rode with the PCB group. Great work that you are doing as well! Yours is a little more important.

Only been out once so far and did not do too bad. Going out again tomorrow. I was on a 7m in gusty 25-35mph wind and very choppy. Probably not the most ideal learning to foil conditions.
Anyway, I found it difficult to get the board situated in position in order to water start. Getting it on its side and holding it there long enough to get your feet on the board was challenging. The board wants to wiggle out of position or right itself and not stay on it's side and in the mean time the kite is pulling my body so close to the board( that I'm trying to hold in place with one hand) that I have no room to extend my legs and get them on the board.
I'll figure it out with time, but was curious to see if there were any videos on that particular situation.

I've watched several of your videos and I hugely enjoy both what you show and your attitude. Please, just don't stop ;-)) Would you have any tip to water start on a foil in very very light wind ?

Thx Claude, in very light wind, look at downlooping the kite for power and concentrate on getting your forehead over your feet to get on top of the board pointing more downwind so that you can break over that fulcrum.

I like your videos a lot!!!.... but I agree background music can be annoying and competes with understanding what your saying.

I would agree a short 40 mast will help a lot, the second day I was learning a couple of guys flew in from Seattle to foil, they had just a days experience, they had long masts, they just couldn't get going I told them to rent a shirt mast and they came back the next day and now could ride the mast made all the difference.
Also the foil head will make a big difference in learning, mine is a need to fast head, I crashed a lot and when going felt it was so fast , you need slow when learning this to help with transition and gybe

agreed, larger/slower head will help dramatically, combine it with short mast, and its best way to learn imho.

@@OurKiteLife I just learned on a 15" and 24" mast Ride Engine (Slingshot) surf foil (H2 foil) which was excellent for a beginner. I also picked up a Slingshot Simulator which is reasonable in durability but otherwise excellent to learn on. I had been mentally chewing over the body mechanics needed for some time and I think that helped a lot. But I was up and riding fairly decently well on my first session, which was made more difficult by the fact that my only foiling kite was a 10m Apollo. You do have to be mentally prepared for front foot pressure and being "on top" of the board, as you said.

@@spencergarrison2468 having mental preparation before heading foiling for first time definitely makes a big difference, during our first session we really did not know what to do, but on second session with some tips from locals helped a lot as we digested what we had to do before hand. Good luck on you next sessions ;)

Do you absolutely need to have those straps to kite foil?

      Not at all

@@TheOKKiteboarder I meant when you are starting. It seems to me that it might be easier to get a hold of the board when you are trying to get on it or when you are trying to body drag out to deeper waters. I tried yesterday without straps and was a complete fiasco. I couldn't do either.

Thanks but would be better off skipping the background music
