I once had a theory because Dust was like a fossil fuel, that it came from latent magic from the ashes of humanity. Instead of coal or oil, it was Dust. Glad to see that might be the case.

    Theory time:
    The Big Plot Twist.
Something has been bothering me in regards to magic and the Brothers Grimm, and the whole fairytale basis of RWBY.
It has been a recurring theme with characters lying or not giving the whole truth. (probably as a result of the writers lack of foresight, but hey.)
...How exactly do we know we can trust info coming from Jinn?
...How do we know that the Gods actually left?
No good scientist would just leave an experiment unobserved, and for all the claims that the Brothers were just incompetent and childlike...
Its possible, sure, but I think the more likely possibility is that they are just operating behind the scenes now.
    Notable points:
1- They tried being out in the open, having shrines dedicated to them, where people could just come and talk and ask for things. This ultimately led to humanity getting "greedy" and rebellious. The Gods exterminated them for this. Seems... a drastic solution, not exactly something a "good" god would just stand by and let happen.
2- The Ultimatum that the god of Light gave Oz is... vague, with brutal consequences. A classic sort of final judgement style end of the world is humanity cannot learn to exist peacefully and unite? Sorry, but Utopia through threat of force is how you get a dystopia, and that always has its fair share of rebels. How would the Gods who created humanity know so little about human nature and instinct? Or just be willing to ignore it and force humanity to bend to their will under tacit threat of extinction?
3- The Lost Fable episode seems... fake. Fabricated, but with enough of the truth so that Oz can't disprove it. (either that or his mind was messed with. we don't exactly know how reincarnation works here.) This episode is also a problem episode for many fans, as it is somewhat shallow on details and paints the Gods as... less than intelligent, shall we say.
4- So far, all the relic spirits are blue, and carry a motif of golden chains. Let that sink in for a second.
These are powerful entities, being wielded and controlled and fought over by humans, effectively trapped inside inanimate objects. Sound familiar to any fairytale tropes of spirits and gods being trapped unwillingly? Golden Chains as well... gold IS a recurring theme with the God of Light.
5- Alchemy. Early on in the show, Dust and Alchemical glyphs were a common sight, even during the first episode. Those floating symbols were never explained. References to alchemic and hermeticist concepts like Aura and Elemental Energy are found all over the place, but glossed over as worldbuilding or macguffins(again, writing problems). If these were just random inclusions that stopped after the first season, perhaps I could overlook it. They didn't stop, however, and Salem even uses them to shape and control the Grimm, as we see during Volume 8.
Some of the interpretations for what these inclusions could mean are... troubling. Universal death and rebirth, over and over and over.
6- Music. RWBY has always seemed like a more vibrant world through the songs written for it, giving new character insight and even lore. Some of the songs specifically around Cinder, Raven, and Salem hint at something much bigger than Salem and Oz's war going on. "Show them Gods and deities, blind and keep the people on their knees" is a direct quote from Sacrifice, as far back as Volume 2, and has been reinterpreted to be about everyone from Phyrra to Raven to Cinder to Salem.
    7- Final point for now.
What was the point of the "experiment" of original humanity? What did the Brothers Grimm want to learn or gain?
Finally... say I'm wrong. What have they been doing all this time, away from Remnant? Started another world? in that case...
...how many times have they let this happen?
    Conclusion:
In short, If the writers want to solve a LOT of problems, the Brother Gods simply removed themselves as factors in their experiment, and began again from behind the scenes. If the central story of RWBY is still based on The Wizard of Oz... "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".
They could end up being the true villain's at the end of the series. Creators and destroyers toying with mortal lives. The "players" of the chess game. People die, new pieces are chosen, but every battle ends with either Oz or Salem dying and being reborn. They are the King pieces, not the players.
In a strange way, it reminds me of the Halo theory of the Primordial and Flood's true nature, and of Destiny's Traveller and the Darkness.
Both of whom happen to have been made by Bungie.
RWBY was clearly setting itself up as the successor to Red vs Blue, especially when Roosterteeth started suffering financially.
If Roosterteeth were planning on following in their footsteps...
Perhaps this is not the first time history will repeat. "My future is your past", "all suffering is but sweetness" and all that.
    Or perhaps I'm overthinking things.
Either way, I'm totally making a reboot-style fanfiction out of this.

    • @thebanditman5663
      @thebanditman5663 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

This exactly. Working on a fanfic where the gods are essentilly just playing around with what they don't understand as normal people do in real life with lab rats, and expanding that to; what happens when the experiment decides it dosn't like being stuck with needles? Salem and Oz's war is more or less about how they escape the experement. One side being controle humanity to bring unity, (make the scientist happy so you get cheese,) the other being total liberation by simply fighting against the gods again. (Bite the hand that feeds and escape the lab) And humanity is stuck in the middle suffering the concequences of the two bigger rats fighting over how they "win." With other "scientists" trying to influince the work.
Then there's a crochity old man who hates Salem for being a mass killing "for the greater good" psycho, disagrees with Ozpin's methods (basically the gods methods of never directly interfering which is the reason for so much suffering in their world), and blames the gods for being "Worse parrents than Oz and Salem combined." Oh how I love to watch world's burn.

Actually, Humanity didn't get Greedy or Rebellious till Salem became Immortal
It was Salem that Triggered everything in the lost Fable
1- Who was in the tower that Ozma went to ? SALEM
2- Who told the Humans to attack the Gods lying saying "I stole Immortality from the gods" ? Salem
3- Who was left to roam the land after the *Great Dusting* {that's what I call it} punished with Her Immortality forever ? Salem
4- Who {Probably} gave birth to the original 4 Maidens ? Salem
5- Who is the one *Defeated* {Still pretty sure she's dead} Summer Rose many years before even Vol 1 started ? Salem
And, yes the Gods are supposed to be idiots here. They gave their Creation {Technically God of Light's creation} the Humans full sentience and Will of their own, their like Robots with Hyper AI if they think they're better then their creators they Rebel
That's what we know about our fellow Man in real life, we do things against the Authority or Higher Ups when we feel as if we are miss treated or deserve more.
The God of Light even says it himself
      *"This was a very intresting experiment but we failed"* ~ God of Light {Para-phrased of course}
He does call the World of Remnant an *Experiment* though. To the Gods Humanity {And later Faunus} are basically just like Robots or any other type of Science Experiment, the power of Magic in itself is an iffy thing to say when it comes to these Two Gods
Even in real life Magic can be summed as *Science we know nothing about*
And, Red vs Blue has nothing to do with RWBY but the idea of having Colors involved
They never mention Soldiers that go to space like characters in RWBY, that's the whole Point
In RWBY they have no space travel because Aura, Semblances and Dust don't work up in space. Last I checked RVB is a series taking place in space not on Earth or what would be Remnant

    About Dust being finite:
If you use up a dust crystal, what happens to it? If laws of preservation (matter cannot be destroyed) apply in RBWY as well (and seeing that magic was preserved once already), then I doubt it will be gone entirely.
Most likely whenever you use up a dust crystal, the 'magic' inside somehow scatters into something so small and insignificant that it doesnt do anything anymore.
But I think that over time, once this faint magical byproduct settles down somewhere -in the sea, under layers of dirt and sand etc-, it will one day compress and crystalize to become dust again. Basically how fossile fuels (vaguely) are created.

    • @PhoenixNight

    • @shadchad3616
      @shadchad3616 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It could be finite if, by the processes of fusion, fission or something like that, the dust crystals are converted to pure magic energy.

    • @artistanthony1007
      @artistanthony1007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It honestly would be finite because the God's produced it to limit humanity, it was to see if they're willing to not be selfish and value what they were given, they could create more or give back magic if humanity changes, that's the reason why there's Semblance and Dust.

What about semblances that sorta have elemental-like properties? Sure they cant pull fire or water outta thin air full on Avatar Style, but we have seen semblances that can do something similar, such as Cinder’s Scorching Caress generating heat, or Neptune’s Water Attraction allowing him to move a certain area of water?
How far could a semblance go in the realm of elemental control before dust should be involved to amplify it?

    • @PhoenixNight
      @PhoenixNight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Semblances can't generate the element itself but they can manipulate the element, like amplifying it or mimic some effects of it. There are semblances that generate heat or make things cold but they do so without actually generating ice or fire themselves if that makes sense

I think Ironwood's rational thinking was not working on the hard light dust shields not working when Atlas would be raised into the atmosphere because he was not focused on saving the people. Ironwood just did not want to lose. You can see it throughout the volume 8 and a little in volume 7. When Cinder said that is checkmate Ironwood's will was broken. He made dumb decisions in the battle not just because of his declining mental state, but because he just did not want to lose. It's something that I noticed about Ironwood's personality. He tries to come off as noble, but he just doesn't want to lose.

I read this as Atlas has tried this and knows how high Grimm can fly. All they have to do is get atlas higher than that point, which is still lower than "space"/still able
to have Dust, semblances and Magic work.

    • @thebanditman5663

@@dragonrune6800 The problem with this is how would Atlas even know the litmis grimm can fly at, or if this little sweet spot between space and out of salems reach is actually obtainable, if the Amity tower is the first thing they've tried putting into space for god knows how long. And that goes double for Atlas. Sure they solved the fuel problem with the relic, but as for dust I think they finally figured out Dust requres an oxidizer to work, hence the mention of Atlas having an artaficial climate via hard light shields, but this is never expleained so it feels hollow. Secondarilly, Monstra uses gravity dust to fly, and if anyone could figure out how to make dust work near space it's salem, seeing as she's been around since it came into being.
Thirdly, after the Atlas hard light shields were destroyed/ the second Atlas got invaded, it was game over for Atlas. No shields means no containment of atmosphere means no air for your people. Grimm and grimm sludge is now in Atlas with you, so even if you got up to the edhge of space, you could be screwed by a suden influx of grimm that seeaped into the tunnels of Atlas. More to the point, by simply abandoning Remnant and taking the staff with you is not a victory, it's a stalmate, and it will be broken eventually. Again, all it would take to bring Atlas out of the sky is a little bit of time. If Salem get's the sword of destruction, there's litterally no way to know if she'd be able to simply crack Atlas in half and watch it fall.
Ironwood after Atlas got invaded, procecded to keep lossing his mind, and instead of acctually thinking about the end game was so wrapped up in simply winning the battle against Salem then and there that he was doomed to lose the war, like the US in Vietnam and Afganistan.
Salem is wrong, there is victory in stregth, but it's how you use it that determins a victory. Ironwood really should have read The Art of War, if he did he would have known how to attack Salem when she first got spotted coming into Atlas Airspace.
Like really, The enemy's general is on the flagship, accompanied by the entire navy, who's in range of your deffences, while they are currently unable to attack you. This is a Navel comander's wet dream. Project the fighting as far away from the homefront as possible. Destroy the smaller ships, isolating the flagship. Kill or capture the enemy leader.

@@thebanditman5663 Nice dissertation. All I will talk to is lifting up atlas. You had asked how they might already know the limits Grimm can fly. Atlas has military flying ships. They probably [at some earlier time] captured a manticore or some other flying Grimm and had it chase a ship. Whenever the Grimm stopped following the ship, that is the highest they can go. With Ironwood's wording, it's safe to say that there is a limit within the atmosphere that is breathable. Food and water can be stored. Still a waiting game.

@@dragonrune6800 I don't think you really understand the physics behind what I'm reffering too, nor the lack of research RT did for this arc. For one, a country with next to no spacefairing history dosn't on a whim figure out the math to launch a stadium into space in a few weeks, nor would they figure out how to create a nuke in about two days. The limit to how high an atmosphere is brethable for people is 20,000 feet, and higher and you need speciel equiptment or evolution. Assuming the grimm can not breath past this, also means that dust would stop working at about that hight without some form of artaficial atmosphere to burn it in like with Amity, or jet engiens, of which we've not seen once. (please point out to me a single instance of an aircraft in RWBY that has air intakes) so there's no way Atlas took an aircraft higher than what grimm can "survive" to test this, and more to the point birds on earth have been spotted as high as 37,000 feet. After Atlas lost it's shields it's already floating at an altitude nearly that of the highest city in america at well over 10,000 feet, and people that go there need to be aclamated first. Raising it any higher after the shields are gone would likelly start dropping bodies. More to the point, even if Atlas was to fix the shields, fly away, clear all the grimm they have, and stablize their food production they will evenualy run out of dust, minable metal, stone, and other necessities found in the ground. There's a reason the City of Mannhatten has to import so much shit, Atlas cutting itself off from the rest of the world only makes that worse.
And that's again ignoring the fact that we've already seen Salem make grimm do imposible shit. The amount of energy requred to make the monstra fly with gravity dust alone is absurd, and if all it takes is a little bit of an oxydizer to have dust function at altitude the whale's, you know, able to hold a fuck load of air in it's lungs, by that point, it's a matter of just breaking the shields of Atlas again and everyone dies as the air gets sucked out from depressurization.
Ironwood lost his damn mind after the invasion started, and was litterally going to get everyone killed either way.

-The ability to copy any other semblance that the user sees as long as they know how it works there is no limit to how many can be copied at once the person may need an perfect memory also they may deduce how the semblance copied is instead of be told
-The ability to remove another's aura without their knowledge the one with the semblance has their aura increased by the aura removed along side an increase in their strength and speed basically use another's aura as a battery not use full against grimm but against people deadly
Well those are my semblance ideas tell me what you think.
note the second one does not deplete ones aura it removes the defensive aura around someone basically removing ones defense against attacks but the strain on the aura one has is not affected.

Listening to this, my thought is about Ozpin. Magic is tied to the soul, so anyone that Ozma's soul binds to will have magic as well. His soul was placed in the second coming of man, and each like minded soul he binds with in theory will have their own semblance. If they too, due to their souls being bound together, are reincarnated with Ozma, does that mean Ozma had a stockpile of semblances in his backpocket? And if that's the case, why does he not use his semblance more often because, with magic, semblance is something he can wield that Salem can not.

  • @SonicNitro

OK this whole vid has me thinking. What if Salem and Ozma's ultimate goal is elevate humanity to where it has the ability, resources and technology to eventually travel beyond Remnant. Just the way each wants to accomplish such a thing are different. If Salem summons the gods with the relics, her goal could be to challenge the brothers and take their powers from them (she is like only person other than Ozma who has magic and think she could do a better job than the gods), then use it to create a new world and a new wave of humans uninhibited by the flaws of the past and current humans. Either that, or she just wants to die, but Salem probably don't care which outcome she gets. While if Ozma had his way, the god of light could reward humanity with the ability to travel beyond the stars as a result of sorting out its differences and stand as a whole.

It’s a common thing across many myths and religions in history. At this point, it’s pity. The balance was broken so there should be no point in restoring it. The God of Light took pity so devised a way to prove they can salvage something from the mess made. You should know punishment dealt by deities are always harsh. To be honest, destroying only humanity and letting them be reborn again is pretty light. They could have done far worse had Salem rallied more people. That’s why I don’t really blame them for the punishment chosen. It’s the consequences of that punishment that people have an issue with. And to be fair, it’s a cruel consequence. But who do you truly blame? The gunmaker, the one who made the bullet, or the one who pulled the trigger? Many guilty parties involved in Salem’s saga, but ultimately the Gods were only responsible for what came before, not after. They gave her an easy out: Learn to let go. Had Salem tried and not given into her worse instincts, she would have been freed long ago. It’s humanity that perpetuated the broken world. They who broke the balance. I wonder: With Ozmar/Ozpin reincarnating in Oscar, will Oscar still get a semblance?
As far as I remember Ozpins and Oscars soul are merging together. Ozpin - as someone from the first aera of humanity - doen't have any semblance, right? But Oscar normally could develope one. Now with the semblance connected to the souls and their souls merging together what would happen? Can Oscar still develope a semblance before they fully merge or maybe even after? And if Oscar would develope a semblance before the two souls fully merge would that mean they could use both (semblance and magic) afterwards?
Thinking about it, I don't assume that's the case. Because if it were, woudn't Ozmar "collect" a semblances with any (or at least some) reincarnations he is going through? (Assuming when he dies the whole merged soul reincarnates and not just Ozmars original one) And I can't recall ozpin using any semblance.

What do you think about it?

Based on what Oz has said regarding Oscar's semblance (whatever it is), he will have one. Just because we haven't been given info on Ozpin's semblance doesn't mean he didn't have one (many theorize time related). Ozpin said that "Oscar will need to strengthen his body and his aura" and he confirms that they must find his semblance. Most theorize that every reincarnation has a new semblance. Magic should still be available because it is an Ozma trait, not an exclusively Ozpin trait. Oscar will have his own semblance. Many theories are light related, dream related, soul swapping, and time. I would suggest rewatching volume 5 for any info on Oscar and Ozpin regarding their mention of semblance.

"Magic can't recreate what Semblances do." I would need a little elaboration on that.
I get that Dust is all elemental properties and Semblances can only manipulate something like these at most, not straight up create elements like Dust can, but with magic being wholly separate from Semblances I am not sure about. Case in point here would be Qrow and Raven, who we know got their 'Magic' from Ozpin, and their power now is to turn into birds. Now, I would argue that this is awfully similar to Ruby turning into rose petals and zooming about, with that being her Semblance.
Don't get me wrong, I would love for magic and Semblances to actually be something completely separate, and in some ways they are, like how, again, Semblances can't create elemental powers, but magic definitely can, but magic is so vaguely defined that, honestly, anything is possible. I mean, magic can create elemental... everything - projectiles, beams, shields, weapons - but it can also allow for bird shapeshifting and... wireframes..? Maybe the point of magic is being this omnipotent, all-powerful force that allowed humans of the first era to do anything, that now only the most powerful people, like Ozpin, Salem and the Maidens, can wield. But straight up saying "Magic can't recreate what Semblances do" is a little unfounded, or not explained well enough for my taste.

The only hereditary semblance we have seen in 8 seasons of the show thus far is Glyphs used by the Schnee family, that leads me to believe they are incredibly rare (or that the Schnee family has the only 100% hereditary semblance and there is something else going on related to magic, etc.)
But hypothetically, a semblance could be a combination of two hereditary semblances or it could work like genetics where the "dominant" semblance genes are the ones the child has. Interesting question to think about

If you could only have one (dust, a semblance, or activated aura), which would it be?
I’d go for a robust aura myself. Because my connective tissue isn’t particularly hardy and I’m getting older, so I’m vulnerable to sprains, strains, and tendinitis. Which is a massive source of frustration when you want to be physically active!

it makes sense how semblances could be very similar Yet still different.
yang and Adam have the same semblance, with the difference that Adam didn't need to get Hit to generate the powerfull attack of his semblance. yang HAS to take damage to increase her power.
i don't think i seen much other semblance similarities... other the nadam and yang. and Qrow and clover

spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the last episode of season 8
so if a semblance can't work outside of Remnant then Ruby & the others that fell won't be able to use them for as long as they're in this new world or what ever it is

I would add: unless Magic works in this place. Since Semblances and Dust come from Magic, they should also work- to some extent.

to be honest, I was under the impression that the Dust crystals are fossilized magic.

How would you "fossil-ize" Magic, which is pure energy ? What fossilizes?

@@dragonrune6800 well word would you describe it?, remember what Phoenix/Knight said on this video?, about the people born from dust, or something, the magic never left Remnant, the magic had been crystalized in multiple colors representing magical elements?, so therefore, I call Dust fossilized magic.

@@pauljordan0203 Ok, but my question stands. Other than the visual manifestation, what is Magic? Quantify it for me. What about Magic is physical?
You can't fossilize aether or plasma or other gasses.

@@dragonrune6800 well I call what I see when I watch shows like RWBY, magic is mystical energy that everyone harnesses in fantasy genre's, that's all I've ever known, if I called Dust as fossilized magic, I call it fossilized magic, so deal with it.
