The whole part from when she chooses to facing the cat, even just red like roses theme playing when she grabs crescent rose-it is one of my favourite parts, I did see some people saying that they wished she had a major change and that all of 9 was for nothing but i strongly disagree because at the end of the day-Ruby's development was always about whether she was enough, the doubts in volume 7 and 8 show that. I think one of my favourite, simple scenes is the teary smile she gives the blacksmith whilst thanking her-it just says it all.

What I love about this Volume for Ruby is showing how even the most positive and upbeat people have their breaking point. Ruby breaking down to the point of yelling at her team and Jaune felt satisfying. I always feel it’s unrealistic for a character to always be positive no matter what happens. No one is perfect and we all have limits. This volume jumped Ruby into my top 5 favorites. Seeing her breaking point felt so real

Quote: The trait of hope is rarely unearthed, as it only arises from circumstances deemed
most undesirable. As we are preferential to the whims of prosperity, victory, and overcoming obstacles,
one's inner penchant to maintain hope can only be gauged under the greatest of duress.
It cannot be tested in advance, it cannot be manufactured, and it cannot be nurtured
    like any other discipline.
    Hope is easy to understand.
But it takes tremendous sacrifice to practice.
While many tested hearts can have their hope shaken...
...it just needs one believer to embolden us all.

Lets also not forget about the others that had there own character growth as well like weiss, blake and yang. As for jaune and neo? Neo will decide her own fate through her ascension so thats a gamble and maybe we will se her again soon. and for jaune? He's more of a wild card cause i really dont know what he wants to be since that whole jaune talking with the illusion of alyx (maybe im over thinking that scene but thats a whole other theory). But all in all its nice to see team RWBY grow from what they were from vol.1 to what they are now

I’d love to have a video explaining how Weiss grew at all in this Volume because I didn’t see anything from Weiss this volume besides being comedic relief. Sure, once or twice she mentions how sad she is about Atlas but then it’s literally never brought up and addressed and she just runs around being silly, it’s so inconsistent.

Exactly, Ruby never asked to be part of a secret war between two immortals for the fate of humanity and the entire world. None of them did. Hell, she didn't even ask to be the leader of a team. She wanted to become a hero and have a team, sure. But nobody asked her to lead one. Ozpin drafted her two years, too early. She was only 15 when he recruited her. Recruited early was one thing, but making her a leader, too? She wasn't even ready. And it wasn't just because of her skills and ingenuity, but it was because of her Silver Eyes.
Why recruit her so early if she's still too young? Did he see great potential her? Was he desperate to find something that will give him an edge to win this war? Or Both?
Plus, it's kinda risky. He should remember what happened the last time he did that.

Ruby has been playing catch up with her teammates. She was the youngest, but she was also the Leader. There was so much on her shoulders she subconsciously held back her true potential whenever it weighed on her. But now, her Heart and Mind are as one. She now believes in herself just as her Team does. Just as her friends do. And now, she’s finally leveled up and is on par with them.
Ruby could barely hold her own against Harriet, often playing keep away or defensive measures. It wasn’t until Harriet was exhausted and probably half-dazed that she was going to win… if Weiss didn’t steal that away. But now, this Ruby would definitely go toe-to-toe with Harriet and win 1v1. Because she’s now stronger than ever, faster than ever. She’s now ready to move forward, and continue shouldering the burden placed upon her shoulders. Because maybe, she didn’t need to be perfect, and that being herself will be enough.

"What If...... I choose me ?"
"Then, maybe that girl is enough"
It actually reminds me a little bit of Neptune from HyperDimension Neptunia the Animation during the Yellow Heart part of where she got depressed and it took Plutia and a few others to get Neptune to reflect on her feelings
Eventually giving her the resolve needed to face Yellow Heart
Both Ruby in this show and Neptune in HyperDimension Neptunia the Animation are depicted as Happy go lucky until something causes them to fall into Depression
Just look at the lyrics of the Volume 9 opening for RWBY
    "That world is ungrateful"
That's not referring to Alyx talking about the world, that's Ruby's thoughts

What really bothers me about Volume 9 is that the whole thing was basically a filler arc, it did nothing to progress the plot and only served for character development that should have been part of the plot and not be done in a seperate dimension we only learned about a Volume prior.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Exactly, and a good leader should know when to back off and when to take charge. It's everyone's dream to become the leader of a team of Hunters. But it's not easy as everyone thinks.
Her and her teammates had forgotten what being a team is all about. It's not always about having a great leader or being flawless and invincible, it's about the bonds they share, helping one another out and what they choose to do with their abilities. They're more than a team, they're a family.
Even leaders have their breaking points. Ruby shouldn't just sit around and wait for someone to notice her pain and hide it. That bottles it up. Even a hero needs saving. Ruby isn't Supergirl.
Plus, they need to learn that a plan is only as good as those who see it through. They may have faith in her but she needs faith in them in return.
Like Emerald told them, They're going to take hits. Even if what happened in Atlas went to hell, they shouldn't let that stop them from doing what's right.

There’s also something regarding Ozpin and Coco. In After The Fall, Coco told Ruby that she shouldn’t show her weakness, for the people that are counting on her. Ozpin also told her to always work her best, but didn’t exactly pronounce it better, so it made Ruby feel like she had to put everyone before herself. So, Ozpin and Coco also shares the blame, and I hope that that is brought to light, and so both will give Ruby the advice she truly needed to hear.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 ปีที่แล้ว

@@colinstaincliffe9005They both had good intentions but they took the wrong approach.
If you don't show your weaknesses to the people who who are counting on you, then they'll think you're a miracle worker and would eventually suffer the same dilemma as you are. Like I said even a hero needs saving. Showing them your weakness will inspire them to help you in return. Don't push people away or bottle it up.
Yes, you should always work your best. But you should also learn from failure. A wise man once said "Failure is the pillar of success". Failure teaches us what we did wrong and how we can do better. If you don't learn from your Failure, you're doomed to repeat it. Just ask Penny.
Humility is one of the most important lessons in becoming a hero.

To really drive home just how absurd Ruby's journey has been. In the span of around 2 years, she went from a naïve kid who knew almost nothing about the world, to being one of, if not the most knowledgeable person, in the world. And all of that, on top of the fact that she was the one primarily bearing the burden of leadership amongst her group.

  • @jamiedeem7291
    @jamiedeem7291 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's an important lesson that even we have to face that question "Choose for yourself one that you can leave your burdens behind or choose the one who will be enough to bear them." The choice the Ruby made to bear any burdens but now she can make her choice to be herself. As her mother said "I love you. Just the Way You Are." It make me think of other things that would have said or what people might say after 'I love you' like for example: I love you, as special. Just the Way You Are. That's my example and there are other examples the symbol or hero or just anything. So I think that Ruby has shown us that it's our choice that we choose our own path even if the choices has been forced on by others we choose to be ourselves and follow our hearts to choose what we make our own choices.

I think you’re right about Ruby’s character development and what you said was beautifully shown. And just to say this, as a fan, I think I might’ve noticed this myself. Ruby’s character development has actually paralleled to the four relics. She “created” her weapon, she knew who she wanted to be in the beginning, and she’s created many great friends and hope. Using her weapon, she was able to help on the mission to “destroy” the grimm and the threat against Remnant. Over the course of the nine volumes, like you said, she now has “knowledge” of everything that was going on and what has happened. Finally, as you said, she “choose” in volume nine that she is the person is enough, who will be able to bear the burden and take on the mission. As that’s the way, I understand it, I agree that volume nine was the biggest character development arc for Ruby Rose.

The character development for Ruby has been crucial. However one thing I hope they don't gloss over is the moment where she did break down and lashed out at everyone, hopefully they address that and acknowledge that they failed Ruby by being unable to have confide to them and promise to actually improve going forward; e.g. even though she was the first to notice Weiss for failing her partner/ best friend, Yang for failing her sister, Blake for not acknowledging the declining mental condition of her leader/ friend & Jaune for not providing any alternative solutions to the pre - vol. 9 plans, not bearing any decision responsibilities and pushing all those responsibilities onto Ruby - just my thoughts on this. Me too. And I hope Ruby forgives them and says that it wasn't entirely their fault. Saying that she shouldn't have bottled up her pain and should've opened up instead of hiding it or expecting them to notice. Before telling them that she needs to have more faith in them just as much as they have in her. And Tell Jaune that what happened to Penny wasn't his fault and that he did what he could. And he saved Weiss. Penny was so desperate to correct a mistake that she lost herself to it. Ruby says that if she were in Penny's position, she could've ended up the same way. Thus, they all make a vow to make sure that whatever mistake they'll make, they'll all work together to fix it and make sure no one else dies to correct it or otherwise.

@@neoclayman0302 Exactly, my friend. Hopefully this experience has also taught Ruby a lesson in humility.
Also this experience should hopefully help her teammates remember what being a team is really all about. Ruby may be their leader but even she needs saving every now and then. It doesn't take a great leader to make a great team, it takes a great team to make a great leader. Trust in your leader and they'll have a reason to trust in you and vice versa.
While Ruby's plan ended in disaster at the end of V7 and lead to a falling out with Yang, the latter in V8 latter admitted that Ruby was one of the few people to at least be doing SOMETHING rather than NOTHING.
Oh, and let's not forget before Jaune compromised to split up into two groups, one to help Mantle and the other to call for help, Ruby didn't get mad at Yang for questioning her leadership nor did she raise her scythe at her for doing so. She agreed with the terms. She was upset but still.
All the things that happened in Atlas weren't entirely Ruby's fault. She didn't want to lie to Ironwood but she had to because, given their track record of being sold out and lied to by two headmasters, she didn't want to lead her friends into another trap nor did she want Ironwood to abandon hope. Hell, she saw the condition of the Kingdom, its people and Ironwood himself. Telling him the truth right then and there would've ruined everything. Thus, she decided to help the Kingdom and Ironwood with all of the problems they're having. That way Ironwood would be on the level for her to finally tell him the truth. She did what she thought was right. It only backfired because of Cinder, Ironwood's personal trust issues and a cruel twist of fate.
In short, some things are far beyond our control. And Ironwood's fall, Ozpin locking himself away and, I hate to admit this, but, Penny's death are examples of what NOT to do when your insecurities, fears, doubts and regrets cloud your judgment. Or else you'll die.
Oh, I forgot, despite Neo's vengeful and heinous action of mind games, killing Little and making Ruby commit what is essentially mental suicide, Ruby held no grudge against her. (It was the Curious Cat who masterminded it to get a body and go to Remnant, after all) Ruby didn't even bother to try attacking her, again. She let Neo go so she can find herself. Neo even gave up her quest for revenge, now knowing it wouldn't bring back what she lost and gave Ruby a final bow before leaving to find herself. That simple act of kindness may one day be repayed in future. A little kindness can go a long way.

    • @neoclayman0302
      @neoclayman0302 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@kidprime6863 I agree. I too hope this lesson is well learned. As Believing in yourself is earned not given. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you. Her friends have always trusted her judgement, even when she doubted herself. And they stayed with her through thick and thin. The end of Volume 7 and All of Volume 8 was enough to make anyone lose their confidence, and I'm glad Ruby bounced back to her old self. Believe in yourself and you can defeat a thousand enemies!
Like you I believe what happened in Atlas is not the fault of Ruby's group. None of it was. They gave it their best shot, but nobody could've foreseen how Cinder and Co. would screw everything up. Both with Ironwood and the evacuation. They did the best they could. Ruby's group wanted to warn the world of Salem(as Ironwood failed to deliver his promise) and Yang's group wanted to evacuate all of Mantle to safety far away from the fighting. I'm glad Jaune had the sense to tell both of them that they can split up to cover both goals. And I'm also glad it didn't end with Ruby pointing her scythe to her sister Yang. Ruby is not the kind of person to threaten others for questioning her authority and never will be. That sort of thing would make her no better then Ironwood, and I'm proud Jaune was the Arbiter in this goal dispute.
And speaking of Ironwood. As we discussed previously about trust. Lionheart sold them out to Salem to save his own cowardly life, and Ozpin didn't tell them the truth about Salem's immortality, and the part he played in her origin story. Atlas was suffering from Ironwood closing the borders, and Ironwood looked like he was one bad day away from snapping. Ruby's Group was tired of all the Lies and the Half-Truths, and ironically didn't tell Ironwood right away. Because they didn't know if Ironwood could handle the truth, let alone if they could trust him, but still they tried. But just when things were going their way Cinder pressed the General's trauma button and made Ironwood turn into a full blown Paranoid Tyrant. And all of it along with Ironwood's severe trust issues were out of anyone's control. And Penny's death was not on their heads either. Jaune has every right to feel guilty about the part he played, but still it was her choice.
And as for Neo I'm not sure I can fully forgive what she did to Ruby and Little. But as you said they were all deceived by the Curious Cat, and she clearly regrets everything she's done since Volume 6, and she did the right thing in the end. Cinder bent Neo to her will by making her go after the wrong person in her quest to avenge Roman, and she punished Ruby Rose for nothing. And the Cat used her to as a one way ticket to get out of the Ever After(Bet Neo is sick of being every Villain's puppet at this point). And she killed the Cat and took a leap of faith into the tree to find out who Neopolitan will be next. And maybe you're right. A little kindness does go a long way. Maybe one day she'll come back to Remnant as a much nicer person. Ruby and Co. need all the help they can get. Goodbye Neo and good luck!

      @kidprime6863 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@neoclayman0302 Speaking of Penny, while you're right about Jaune having every right to regret what he did and, yes, it was her choice, but it all could've been avoided if she had listened to her friends and went through the portal to Vacuo, not only would she be alive, the Maiden powers and the Relic of Creation wouldn't have fallen into the wrong hands. She did what she thought was right, sure, but at the cost of her life and the Relic. The Maiden powers weren't important to Salem, anymore. Because they already used them to unlock the Vault. They were still important to Cinder because she wants to become a god. It's the Relic Salem wanted.
Penny's judgment was clouded by her insecurities like feeling like a puppet on strings because she's a robot and her regrets of getting the Maiden powers because with them, she now had to struggle with the responsibilities of being both the Protector of Mantle and the Winter Maiden. She was so desperate to do her own thing that she refused to listen to her friends and father. She even blamed herself for Winter's condition because she was supposed to be the Maiden not her, not helped by the Ace-Ops gaslighting her about it just to goad her into surrendering. Ironwood went as far as to have Watts hack her. These unfortunate circumstances drove her into becoming more reckless and self-sacrificial. She believed that sacrificing herself was the only solution to clean up the mess she caused and she constantly tried to do just that until fate was like "Alright, fine! You can sacrifice yourself! Don't come crying to me if it gives your friends and your father grief!". And that's exactly what happened.
Making her human may have purged her of the virus but not her insecurities. They were still there. It made her more vulnerable and mortal. Like I said, her clouded judgment made her an easy target. Not going through the portal was exactly what Cinder wanted her to do. Trying desperately to correct something that was beyond her control made her fall right into Cinder's trap.
In short, Penny failed to understand the definition of Insanity: "Repeating the same thing over and over again, expecting different results". Like constantly trying sacrifice yourself to fix something that isn't entirely your fault. When there are other solutions to fixing it. The fact that she had zero regret about what she made Jaune do just proves how oblivious she was of the consequences it would entangle. Sure she's naive but still. Since we don't know what became of her body after fell into the void thanks to the V9's behind the scenes production dilemma with COVID-19 among other issues, Ruby and co. never got the closure of her fate. It's probably rotting away somewhere in Ever After.
Unlike Ruby, she failed to realize that her friends and father don't give a damn about whose fault it was. Even if it was hers. All they wanted to do was help her fix it. Just so we're clear, I'm not mad at Penny, I'm mad at what she did. And Ruby's struggles in V9 reflect Penny's and it could've ended the same way if Ruby hadn't conquered herself. (Damn the Maiden powers and Relics to Hell)
And Yes, Neo became catatonic after finally getting her revenge because she didn't know what to do after she got it. Like I said, it didn't bring Roman back. To paraphrase what Bruce Wayne said in Batman Forever: "Your pain doesn't die with Ruby, it grows. Until one terrible morning you wake up and realize revenge has become your whole life". Besides it was Roman's own arrogance that got him devoured.

@@kidprime6863 Indeed. I too hold no ill will to Penny, but yes her actions caused more problems then solved. Especially with Jaune and Ruby. Jaune had to live with what he did for decades, and overcompensated for his inability to save anyone by unintentionally holding the Paper Pleasers hostage. And Ruby got so depressed that it was only a matter of time before she suffered her meltdown.
And yes, Penny did try to correct all her mistakes, but she blamed herself for things far out of her control. Such as Winter getting hurt, Ironwood and the Ace-Ops needing the Relic of Creation to get Atlas to safety, and getting infected by a virus, and especially Ironwood threatening to blow up Mantle if she didn't turn herself in. She had every right to feel guilt but no obligation to give Ironwood what he wanted. And everyone including Cinder and the Ace-Ops gaslighting her only made her feel worse. And yes, nobody who loves her cares if it was her fault or not, they wanted to save her and they nearly succeeded. I get why she had to give the Power to Winter. I just wish she didn't have to die to do it. She should've just ran through the Portal, or thrown the staff through it when nobody was looking!
Yes, Ruby succeeded where Penny failed. She realized she didn't need to keep blaming herself every time something goes awry, or every time they lose more then gain. And most importantly she realized that she didn't need to be anyone else to save the day, because Ruby Rose is enough(being and believing in yourself is a great moral all things considered). Also I too suspect Penny's body landed somewhere in the Ever After, they couldn't even give her the proper burial she deserves for her courage and sacrifice. Stupid Relics! Stupid Pandemic!
And finally yes. Roman's death was his own fault all things considered. At the end of the day nobody is to blame for his death other than Cinder and himself. His arrogance and evil boasting about how he'll survive and Ruby will die like every other would be hero was basically him begging: "Hey Grimm I'm over here! Please eat me!" And Cinder took advantage of Neo's obsession for avenging him to get rid of Ruby and Co. Spider-Man's Aunt May once said: "Revenge is like a poison." It hurts others and you. And when her revenge was complete Neo broke because she realized what she had left was Absolutely Nothing!

This certainly was an important defining moment for Ruby, though I do wish it could have gotten a little more time. I wish her conversations with the Blacksmith inside the Tree could have delved into the good that she has done. It really would have been nice to see some visions or flashbacks of the things she has accomplished, the people she has saved, to counter the narrative Neo instilled in her in episode 8 of having done more harm than good. Once Ruby could see all that she has accomplished, even though she has also failed sometimes, *then* it could transition into her deciding that just being the person she is is enough.
That's one of three additional scenes I think the end of the volume really could have benefitted from (I've said before: I think they needed one more episode). The other two would have been some time at the start of episode 9 for everyone else to process the shock and the confusion of seeing Ruby drink the tea, and some moments at the very end of episode 10 for everyone (especially Ruby and Jaune) to acknowledge the hurtful things they'd said to each other when they all snapped in episode 7, and show that they each understand what the other had been going through.

Ruby in most of volume 9 was so different from Ruby from the rest of the series with good reasons with everything she went through and how her own team had a major oversight on Ruby well-being.
And most of the RWBY team actually grew significantly over the course of the volume.
Weiss, Blake and Yang all grew incredibly well, with Weiss actually showing great ability to support others kind of taking over for Ruby as just one example.
Weiss, Blake and Yang all will come out of volume 9 very differently than they were before.
And while Ruby was the most different than she was for most of the volume, at the end she comes out very similar to what she used to be.
It's good character growth with character overcoming doubt and depression, but at the same time it is kind of a plot-line regression making Ruby go through trauma and depression, but the last we see of her is her being the same as she was before the trauma and depression. While Weiss as an example of the opposite, only grew kinder and increased her social ability with every volume (having grew out of her initial haughtiness), it is kind of jarring for Ruby to just seemingly go back to how she was despite of how big of a deal was made of it regaining her confidence as she was from a few volumes back.
It might have a payoff in a future volume later that shows how that difference play off, but just volume 9 standing on it's own, I felt like that was the safe less interesting outcome.
And frankly my gripe isn't about the whole Ruby going through the process and chose herself, but the "she chose herself therefore the previously raised team issues and strain are magically gone and she is back to be the full-time leader" and I kind of expected Ruby to go through "I choose myself, and got renewed courage to fight but now I gotta work my being the leader and support issues and finding some balance in putting myself after others, so it is cool that Weiss been showing team leading traits this entire volume so she can help carry part of the burden as I will be getting back on my feet which would show good narrative continuity by using elements that has been sprinkled through the volume."

This makes me think about Neo's choice to stay in the Ever-After inside the Tree. How will that affect her will she come back the same different and, if so, what will be different. and I have a theory on this that goes along the lines of Neo becoming Humanity's God. Hear me out first, She was human, and at the end she was humane, and during her human years she had seen both compassion and hatred, some of the best sides of the worst people and the worst of the best people, yet she chose to stay with the tree possibly to find a new path and I think she'll become the God of Humanity, (not to bring back Roman) to watch over them and Judge them fairly. Now with that said I think the Gods of Light and Dark are going to Judge humanity harshly, and Neo will have to either stop them or change their mind and get them (the Brothers) to just leave Remnant as it is, possibly taking both Salem and Oz to the Tree to remove their curses. kinda banks a lot on the Neo God theory soo...up to you guys to judge wither or not I'm just a crackpot, or if I've got a mind that sees things differently in a forward direction.

With all due respect, and I'm saying this as a former RWBY fan, but Ruby's "development" felt practically nonexistent. She didn't really grow as a character, she just went back to the way she usually is. It strikes me less as a step forward and more of a "you didn't do anything wrong, you're fine just the way you are." Except, she and her teammates have messed up big time, over and over again, without really contemplating the consequences of their actions.
Are we really just going to dismiss the fact that they're partially responsible for the fall of Atlas? How about the countless refugees that died on the way to Vacuo? Or how about Jaune offing Penny for the sake of shock value?
Betraying Ironwood, losing the relics to Salem, bullying Oscar/Ozpin, nearly getting Qrow killed, not even attempting to prevent Ruby from ascending, etc.
And beyond all of that, how does anything in this arc affect the greater narrative beyond essentially returning our main cast to the status quo? I'm genuinely struggling to see this as anything but filler.
In my opinion, and take this as you will, I think it would have been more profound/interesting if Ruby HAD chosen to be someone other than herself. But obviously that didn't happen, because team RWBY can do no wrong, apparently.

I normally agree with you on a lot of things, but I really can't get behind you on this one. Ruby has a lot of unresolved trauma, grief, and extreme expectations, and her spiral into depression and s*****e was drawn out over several volumes, fueled by the demands of her enemies and the lack of support from her friends. This wasn't some one-off decision to be made. Her time with the Smith in the tree was extraordinarily short, filled with little substance, and cut several times to her teammates who, apart from Weiss, appear to have zero understanding of their role in her drinking the tea in the first place.
Her suddenly deciding to "choose herself" over such little reflection and a cheesy one-liner from her mother was extremely poorly done, completely out of left field, and entirely undeserved. There is no way in Hell she's suddenly "better now" after it all, and her continuing to push forward (and her friends cheering on this sudden "return" of an inhuman persona!) is exactly the opposite of what a real human being would do, and it has left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth. This isn't an issue we can "fix later" in volume 10. It needed to be addressed the SECOND the Cat was out of the way and it wasn't.
This isn't the "working past our problems together" show I came to watch and enjoy. This is "wave our problems away with a magic stick" and I HATE it. It doesn't feel like Ruby, and it doesn't feel like RWBY. It feels like our show's protagonist is on a railcart to victory because the writing demands it. It wasn't earned. It wasn't foreshadowed. It wasn't even acknowledged with the weight it deserves. It's just... bad.

And here how you are wrong!! Ruby's character development, not only started at the last episode of volmue 3 since Penny died and her inocens was taken away, it was forshadowed and and it was made more clear since the whole volume 6, where she learn her enemy is unstapable. All was going to end on her losing hope and going to a journey for herself to regaing that hope that she lost. You might think is crige that her mom said "I love you just the way you are" but the true is Ruby was putting herself at the standarts of her mother, the "perfect and amazing Summer Rose" when she learn she wasen't as perfect as everyone thought so as she thought so, she learn that she didn't need to become someone else, she didn't need to her mom and that no one is perfect. Ruby needed to know that she is love and she doesn't need to change herself because she is enough. You might think that is crige, but it is realistic to poeple irl, so poeple don't know the are enough and that they are perfect as the way they are, and some poeple need to hear those exact words. Every menatl health case is different and for you to sugest that poeple don't go through this possible exact same scenario of mental health problems is disgusting. So her chosing herself is not a magic wand fix, is her realising that she is enough!!
Also you poeple are really stupid sometimes, like do we have the whole series to critic if Ruby is not gonna be still having mental health struggles? Or did you watch volume 10 already? Are you from the future? I think not, so saying that she Ruby's character struggles aren't gonna continue is stupid because we still don't know how is all that gonna play out.
And finally, just because you didn't like somethig doesn't mean is bad, just because they didn't went the direction you had plan in your head doesn't mean is bad writing, you're just annoyed for not reason at all...

@@TheDarkOne1920 What's disgusting is that I critiqued the show's decisions and the characters' choices and here you are insulting me personally. Grow up. You know nothing about me, or about what I've been through, and yet you deem yourself fit to judge me for who I am and the opinions I hold? Be better than that.
I said what I said for a reason. I have lived through impossibly high expectations. I have been that person to bottle up all my struggles internally. And I can say without a shadow of a doubt that that does not go away in an instant. No amount of new revelations causes someone like that to entirely flip their mentality in an instant. I'd know. I've lived it. Years later, I still struggle with it, even knowing how false my old ways of thinking are.
What you're calling "proof" of character development I would consider proof of Ruby's maladaptive habits. Penny's death in vol 3? Only acknowledged once in vol 5, in a discussion with Oscar in which she continues to bottle her grief and press forward in spite of her pain. Penny literally asked Ruby for death in vol 8? Ruby refused to give it despite all logic and reason, too scared to lose a friend again to recognize that she's both causing Penny pain AND denying her autonomy in one fell swoop. Learned the truth in vol 6? Keeps on going without a plan, something the gang bullied Ozpin into retreating for, and then when she doubts herself in vol 7 Qrow fucking sides with the choices she made, conveniently ignores the hypocrisy, and doubles down on the ridiculous expectations of Summer (and therefore Ruby) in the span of mere moments. You've also ignored the other things that demonstrates Ruby's maladaptive tendencies: Ruby not confronting Jaune about the Pyrrha videos in vol 4, likely due to the fact that she herself doesn't want to confront that grief, her inability to conjure happy memories in vol 6 without a magic "save me" Lamp, her blatantly giving up in vol 8 before a coincidence gave her an idea.
Or what about the fact that her friends are forcing the reasonable expectations to continue, and they're utterly failing to see her struggles and be the pillar of support she needs? Jaune, vol 4, says he'll follow her no matter what. Oscar, vol 5, demands what keeps her going to assuage his own fears. Vol 6 literally everyone leans on her, including what was supposed to be her mentor figure, Qrow. Vol 7, Blake says they'll follow her no matter what, and yet Yang criticizes her decisions. They know she's not perfect, but they still put all the pressure on her anyway. Vol 8 this only compounds further as the group has an ethical split, Nora gets critically injured under Ruby's orders, and then Penny's virus goes haywire within Ruby's view. Literally everyone is running to her to "fix this" and not a single person stops to ask if she's ok. If she needs help. They just assume she'll get them through it, an inhuman pillar of hope and ideas, and endless source of optimism in the face of darkness. Guess what? Real people aren't like that. Real people need support, real people need comfort, and real people need to rely on others just as much as people rely on them.
For the record, I fully agree that Ruby's plotline is to lose hope, and then find a way to regain it. I have zero qualms with that. I think her fall from grace was extremely well done, in fact. But her rise back to it was near instantaneous, too complete, and entirely undeserved. When she drank that tea, she had just watched someone else (an innocent, at that!), die because she couldn't save them. Little was dead, simply as collateral damage for being too close to her. You don't just "get over" someone reinforcing all your worst thoughts about yourself with an "I love you." I'm sorry, you just don't. Hell, Ruby's discussion with the Smith even basically flat out suggested giving up mere seconds before she miraculously "chose herself:" "Are you just trying to tell me that it’s useless? That I shouldn’t even try? Is that the big lesson I’m supposed to learn? Just… give up?" (Vol 9, Of Solitude and Self) Someone in that state of mind doesn't just instantly get better. But the show shows that she did, somehow. Back, better than before! Just ignore all the trauma, all the grief, with no new knowledge, no new plans, no new tactics, no new support! Just! Be! "Better!"
...Do you see how unrealistic this is?
Oh, and then as icing on the cake, her ENTIRE FUCKING TEAM immediately affirms this falsely confident team leader, saying "that's our Ruby!" completely and utterly ignoring how those exact same expectations are what caused her to drink the tea in the first place?!?! Not a single one apologizes for putting her under that pressure in the first place, not a single one of them even acknowledges that they are part of the problem. No one asked if she was ok even. They just assumed she was, cause she's been "reborn" now, how wonderful! /s
It's awful, it really is. The mental health of the characters in the final episodes of vol 9 is a fucking joke, in contrast to the 8 volumes before it. And insulting me for thinking as much doesn't make the show less bad. It just makes you look like a fool.

And yeah Ruby bottleling her feelins is character development, for the negative side, but still character development, because her character grew and change and all bottle up till volume 9, no I'm not saying is perfect story, it has his downsides, but is still character development and ignoring that makes you stupid. Now I'm sure you make so valid points but not gonna read all that rant. Have a great day!!

I dont particularly like this, I think it should have been a call back to volume 1, everyone tends to forget Ruby is smart, I mean she made Crescent Rose, instead of just reaffirming to be herself she should have recognized her flaws, the flaws in the weapon, and fixed them with the blacksmith. This would still be her and her Crescent Rose but it's better, finer, maybe it would evolve her semblance or something, I feel like having this entire journey end in basically everyone exactly where they started except Jaune who's honestly just older now(which didn't even stay, just mentally) makes this entire volume feel like filler that was just made to show us that they remembered Ruby does suffer, Jaune to have a redesign, and to fit in bumblebee getting together. Just being Ruby Rose means this will just repeat because Ruby Rose bottles up her problems until she is crushed, she chose to be herself which leaves her exactly where she started, maybe you're right and she won't crumble but nothing is stoping this from just repeating now, without a magical realm to fix her next time, I feel like this is just delaying instead of actually fixing it.

The problem with Ruby's character development is that is was her going in a circle with no real development. She starts out happy and full of joy, begins to doubt herself, doubt grew, she was faced with the chance of becoming something else, she became happy and full of joy. Even worse then you consider the whole Volume. Volume 9 was absolutely useless on all fronts. All character development was reversed right away, all problems fixed in less than a single episode, the entire plotline had nothing to do with the overarching story. The only thing that happened was Bumblebee being confirmed even if it already was in the volume before.
Ruby conflict with being no longer sure if she wants to be a huntress or if she even knows what a huntress should be was partially based on the concept of her mother being a great huntress. She solved it by getting a flashback to her mother saying that she loves her no matter what or who she is. That solved her self doubts.

Ruby has always been the character positioned as having the right outlook to begin with. That's how/why she inspires people to be their best selves. The development she needed was to figure out how to have confidence in that outlook for her own reasons, not for external reasons. Do I think she's truly done figuring that out? Not necessarily; I think even after coming to a realization, it takes time to learn to apply that outlook consistently. You can easily come to the realization of how things should be, but still not always be able to successfully put it into practice. But if you felt she needed to change her outlook, you didn't understand her role in the story to begin with.
