I've an old Prestige 1.5L pressure cooker that I've been using since the mid 70's. It still makes me jump when it goes "psssh!!!". Edit - when using barley, rice, starchy items, etc, use less. They swell inside, absorbing some/all of the liquid. The rest of the cooking liquor can be forced out of the weighted valve, making an awfy foamy, soupy mess. After the first few steam ventings I take it off the heat completely and set it aside. Carry over cooking finishes off the dish. It just takes practice. These are great if you know their limitations.

Ah thank you. Yes I've been hearing about this. Once the veg is cooked the barley does it's own thing. I think it would definitely have been better if I had carefully worked it out. But as this was purely an experiment for the spirit burner I wasn't too phased. But I will do some nice recipes in the future. Appreciate the comment!

Call it an Irish stew, and job's a good 'un.
I'm a bit worried about the lack of a safety fusible plug on that cooker. If the weight gets stuck, you have a ticking time bomb on your stove.
As you have a glove on, just remove the windshield to adjust the simmer ring.
Or, as you so rightly observed, simply use the gas burner.
P.S. The sound, while it lasted, was much improved. 😄

Thanks for the comment. There is indeed a safety valve which is replaceable. It's under the handle on the lid. Yesterday I was using it again and removed the windshield to snuff it and thought......why did I not just do this last weekend 😂😂

A great video Richard 👍 Looks tasty and I can see a curry working really well there too! The topo table is a nice touch! Keep up the good work, I'm off to watch your back catalogue 🤜🤛
