Those old PC version's "1.0" shots are DEFINITELY NOT the very OG release version. There was absolutely NO SHADING whatsoever during the launch. It was all flat, as in full-bright through and through. No shadows, no highlights... complete lack of depth. So yeah, if you think the shown footage was bad, just look up the old 2007 footage if you can. I still have some of that nightmare fuel saved on my PC.
That's what I was about to say. No way I will ever forget that awful, no shading ugly mess of a """port""". You can even see it in the PC Gamer screenshots, but in the video it looks significantly better.
I still think the PS2 port is a decent way to experience the game, but regardless of whether is a bad or good port, anyone who thinks this is the best the PS2 can do should check their eyes. It could had at least come closer to GC.
And all the extras are in the Wii version so it's still one of the worst versions to play. Literally no reason to play that port unless all you have is a PS2 for some reason.
3:52 RE4 is known for its dynamic difficulty. If you play well game throw at you more agressive enemies. If you suck, then enemies will be weaker and drops will be more generous. That's on normal difficulty. On Pro it will be as difficult as if you played very good on normal.
It’s actually because they completely changed the North American GameCube version to be more of an action game. The PAL and Japanese GameCube versions are like the PS2 version.
One thing to note on the QTEs is that the game doesn't care if you press the wrong buttons, as long as you press the right buttons and there's only a few different combinations. So just mashing all the buttons used in those at the same time passes the QTE.
As someone who played this back in 2008. i thought that the ps2 version looked amazing. it ran smooth, I had no frame of reference of the gamecube version, so the graphics were impressive for the ps2 and you couldn't really tell that the cutscenes were fmv's when playing on a CRT. The muffled sound is interesting, I noticed that even back then and thought it was an intentional choice and served the vibe of the game well. The PC version even at the time looked worse than the ps2 one, not to mention the lack of mouse support
Yeah the PS2 version is how I originally played it, and I never noticed the pre-rendered cutscenes. The only reason I eventually knew they were pre-rendered is because that's the explanation for the mafia costume being absent in cutscenes.
I enjoyed the PS2 version back in the day I didn’t really care about the little comprises because it was Resident Evil 4 and the little extra missions added on were a nice bonus too.
@Demon_Curse what do you mean? I remember watching my brother play this and thought it was the scariest and coolest looking game on the PS2. A lot of people back in the day probably didn't know the GC version looked better because a lot of people didn't have both consoles. If I said the HD Project or the Wii version was worse, that would be copium.
@justchan2443 plenty of people knew. All because you were a kid living in a bubble doesn't mean it was unknown. TH-cam may not have existed, but magazines and gaming website did. The PS2 version was blasted in reviews. A subject that was skipped over here was also the framerate drops and it's effect on controls making aiming harder.
@CerealKiller you acting like the reviews aren't still posted. Every single one mentions the graphics and controls downgrade. You can live in the fantasy world of your youth, but I was already in my 20s when they dropped and remember how the gaming press reacted.
Important note: on the TVs of the time the differences where not as obvious, moreso when you probably hadn't videos or a GameCube side by side to compare.
I think the PS2 version was acceptable for its time, but the PC version released by ubisoft was terrible (I finished RE4 for the first time through this port and I remember even the controls were problematic).
What about the Ultimate HD Edition that is available on Steam? The notorious re4 HD Project is a mod for that version in particular, is there major differences between this and the original PC port + patch 1.1.0?
Yes, there are plenty of differences between the original pc port (plus patch) and the Steam release in 2014. The Steam version was based on the PS3 release, which in turn was based on the Gamecube version.
@@n-tertainmentx-tended4760 the unfontunate part is they're unable to find a source code for Seperate Ways so the cutscenes are still pre-rendered version from the PS2.
Still shitty controls with stick emulation through mouse, some visual effects from Gamecube version missing. Like artistic blur on the backstage of cutscenes.
the PS2 version would be a lot better if it was designed with that in mind. just look at MGS2, and how it looks much better as well despite the four years between the games. however the texture detail is clearly not on the same level, the overal fluidity and visual clarity is much better. the PS2 was VERY powerful if used correctly
Don't forget silent hill ,2 3 and 4 look better than re4 also the water effects that PS2 was missing in re4 that the GameCube has the PS2 is capable of doing volumetric water effects play games like Ico it should a cool volumetric water
Yeah like Resident Evil 4 on PS2 is not the most demanding game on the system, so for those who likes to dismiss the PS2 of being so weak... there is. It could had been equal or closer to GC visuals.
The Gamecube was so underappreciated at the time. It was called a "kiddie" console by the edgy dudebros, but it introduced us to RE4, RE0, and RE remake. It also had ports RE 2, RE 3 and Code Veronica.
People wanted more realistic, adult themed games at about the time when the first video game generation started to become adults and graphics were hitting the point where convincing realistic graphics were possible. That's 'edgy' to the kids these days apparently.
The only thing edgy Is you with your preschool vocabulary. Gamecube was great but just cause you name a few survival horror games doesn't make it less of a "kiddyconsole". I'm pretty sure youre into kids so you shoul love it. Probably play Minecraft and fortnite don't ya bozo?
@marcd.4182 yea the game that sucked that you only know about cause random youtubers started liking it within the last few years. You WAS NOT playing eternal darkness Sr back on release facts
I understand why people think the PS2 version of RE4 is the worst way to play it. But, it's still my favourite. I grew up playing it, that shitty graphics and dodgy gameplay might not fly in hindsight, but the nostalgia will never be beaten as far as I'm concerned.
I still now have a reason to be glad I’m a Nintendo fan that doesn’t relate to their great games (both published and developed by them, so Chibi-Robo and Luigi’s Mansion are equal in my eyes).
The Ps2 version looks so good artistically that the visuals were outstanding back then on CRTs, and since almost nobody had a Gamecube, nobody really cared and there was no youtube for people to compare the versions, even when magazines tell you the difference nobody really cared, the ps2 was there and the graphics were amazing., the same thing happened with the original xbox, it was amazing for the time, but the price and games didn´t justify the purchase for the common people when the graphics of the ps2 were amazing for the time and all CRTs, the console was cheap and the library was big and amazing
Watched my sister play the PS2 version and I thought it it looked really good. Also I never knew RE4 originally started on GameCube, but damn playing the HD ports on PS4/5 looks way better than the PS2 version.
I thought the ps2 version was the original until like 3 years ago, re4 on ps2 was my childhood and I'd imagine same with many more people, and with just how much more popular the ps2 was I'd imagine there's more people who thought it was the original too
Capcopm actually pledged 100% exclusivity for mainline RE titles on the Gamecube, which was, random but a real thing. It was really the best thing the GC had going for it from a marketing standpoint. That's why the REmakes were exclusives, RE4 was also meant to be exclusive. However, since the Gamecube ended up being a commercial failure Capcom negotiated out of the agreement and made RE4 a timed exclusive. Not sure but it could have been the first example of a "timed exclusive" in videogame history.
You people talk about ps2 version like its the worst thing ever while most people played the ps2 version and enjoyed it to the fullest, I beat the game on PS2 10+ times for main campaign and 3+ for separate ways and unlocked everything and had a lot of fun, Also, PS2 could produce a lot better visuals and performance under capable and competent developers, Shinji Mikami also said he would cut his head off if the game got ported to other platforms so go figure.
The 1.0 version you showed is not the actual 1.0 version, as it has some very basic shading, while the real 1.0 had absolutely no shading and shadows. It looked awful.
Not true at all. Games back then were mind-blowing if they had 60fps support or some cool new graphics features, also performance was crucial in complex games where 15-20 fps and stable 30 (or even 60, but not floating unlocked 60) was a big deal for smooth and accurate controls. We didn't care about it THAT much and we were more tolerable to weak graphics and low framerates, that's true, but every single small cool detail was a big thing. Now it's a big messy thing: all those complaints and problems with graphics and performance can be a huge deal and overreacting at the same time, while overall it's almost doesn't matter - you have 60fps and good graphics? Cool. Something is wrong? Complain a bit or wait for patch or move on.
3:52 I don’t know if you saw my comment on your old video, but the changes you mention starting here are unique to the North American GameCube version. They changed it for NA to be more of an action game eg more ammo, more aggressive AI. It’s a completely unique version; the PAL and Japanese GameCube versions and all others are like the PS2 version (excluding the lack of Separate Ways). In fact, the NA GC version has its own (imo significantly worse) weapons stats and balancing.
That original PC version was my first experience with RE4. Looking back at it now, it was actual garbage, but I thought the game was such a masterpiece that I didn't mind the problems of the port. My PC was already shitty anyway, and I was also still in school, so it wasn't like I could just buy a better PC or a console whenever I wanted. So because of that, I had a strong stomach for technical shortcomings and bad performance in all games.
Same here. My PC specs at that time was Pentium 4, 256MB RAM with an FX 5200 - which is literally the minimum requirements. Combined that with the clumsy keyboard and mouse control should be a deal breaker, yet i still managed to beat the game and felt satisfied :)
About the lighting effects In PS2 port. Some areas like the merchant store (the one next to the place you fight El Gigante for the first time) had better light effects, similar to the GameCube.
the ps2 version could have been better in quality, the ps2 can do more, but capcom decided to compress the game as much as possible to make it fit on a 4.7gb dvd, and they could very well have used an 8.5gb dvd dual- layer, notice the separate ways cutscenes, they are super compressed, not in terms of size but in terms of bitrate, very low, and yes the ps2 can play videos above 480p.
I say, i grow up having a RE4 on Gamecube, PS2, and Wii but i finished the PS2 one Normal and Pro while my Wii i only finished the Normal mode not Pro but i also play on my Gamecube but as a average player the graphics are quite nice but more glitches discovered. But back then when i have the PS2 i called the RE4 Gamecube a trash game, not because of Graphics the glitches. But today as a grownup man i agree that Gamecube is known for glitches.
I actually thought the PS2 version of RE4 seemed really great in my opinion and I even still have the PS2 version of this game too which is such a really amazing game and a timeless classic.

Just finished the HD Project last week and I must say, it is perfect. It's a larger file size, but you need to remember that EVERY texture and model has been touched up and redone. It's better than Capcom ever did for that game.
I still remember when seeing the GameCube version, a friend fighting Mendez for the first time looked just like a movie to me. I was like “This is it! This is the next level in gaming.”
To me that's how the entire game felt, it felt "next" gen except it was on a current gen machine. There really wasn't a game that could hold a handle to it, in both it's 3rd person action and it's graphics. People who try to say RE4 is overrated just weren't around when it released the game was an instant masterpiece classic.
Ps2 version was my first version I played it on . I played the hell out of this , I didnt even know it was a port till I got internet and youtube lol I was pretty salty because of the graphics and sound 😅
I think the PS2 version is fine all things considered. The gameplay is still intact, and the artistic intent behind at least 90% of the visual assets is retained. It's really no more compromised than your average Switch port.
At a Time, most these games were made specifically for it hence why the environment always hit better on ps2 games and Xbox. PC never was a priority when they first make these games so they always end up being terrible until many patches later. Older consoles have limitations so when they finish them they cut so much content that never makes it in any version of the game except some minor things.
About enemies losing their head more often, that's probably just RNG and the crit chance of the pistol. So you just happen to get lucky more often, I don't think there's a difference between the stats of the weapons in any version.
I played recently and it doesn't look that bad on a CRT, the thing with most PS2 games is that they look really bad when you blow up the image on a modern display.
@@maguboss1039 I tried PS2 on CRT Flatron monitor through VGA handmade adapter and it looks fantastic. Crystal clear 640x480 with all text subtitles clearly readable and crisp textures.
The ps2 version was not as bad as people remembered since I played it on a CRT and never played the GameCube version, and with progressive scan mode the game looked really good if you never owned a GC. It definitely looked flat in comparison when I looked at screenshots, But yes, we were just happy to get RE4 and play the game considering none of us ever thought we’d even get the game on another console
thanks for the video, i didn't know of the different enemy placement, drops and the dumb ai on pc, you saved me from wasting money lol. i think i'll just get the dolphin emulator and the rom from vimm😁 cheers
To get an accurate measurement of the AI and such it's best to play on professional. Normal mode changes things as you play to suit how you are performing whereas professional is the same regardless of how you perform. So you might get grenades if you are doing badly whereas you might just get money if you are playing well
The PS2 port slander is overblown. Crap tv's back then didnt reaaaally show off the worse textures. Its a perfectly fine port. The extra content more than made up for it tbh.
The PC version isn't the only one using pre-rendered cinematics, the PS2 and Gamecube also use them, although they're better quality and their resolution isn't much different from gameplay and blends perfectly on a CRT screen during transitions
1:42 yeah but nobody played like that. There is an option on every widescreen TV to change the aspect ratio to “zoom” which eliminates every black bar.
Yeah, but PS2 was the console where I managed to play this gem, so still I don't care. I wasn't born in a good country to enjoy luxuries like a Gamecube and many other shits
What's odd with PC version is that I once glitched the game around the Krauser boss fight and it didn't load the pre-rendered cutscene of Krauser's hand mutating. Instead it loaded the camera movement in the game engine. Of course the sound was cut and the character models didn't load, but it showed that there were leftovers in the game files and the in-engine cutscenes were either playing in the background while the pre-renders were happening, or they were suppressed and hacked out of the game.
I thought the initial release of RE4 on PC was more awful looking? I remember it having literally no lighting, shading, or shadows of any kind. This 1.0 version looks better to me?
MamoMark is correct. This shown footage IS NOT the original release version. It was WAY WORSE than that, as in full-bright flat, period. Nothing to do with resolution. What you show in the video as "1.0" is clearly already patched, while the "1.1" is like some sort of texture mod. You need to check your facts.
You can get grenades from Ganados on PS2, but it is extremely rare and happened only on my 6th playthrough . I was really shocked to be honest with you
Yeah, as a PC player I can say that we were treated very bad all the time. Each game that had been ported to PC was either bad in general or it had cut content, or was ported from lesser console. And Resident Evil 4 is one of many examples of that. Other examples that were either badly ported or were missing content that comes to mind are games like GTA 3, GTA Vice City and GTA San Anreas, Onimusha 3 Demon Siege, Asterix & Obelix XXL, NFS Hot Pursuit 2, NFS Most Wanted, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 9, Devil May Cry 3, GTA 4, Batman Arkham Knight, RAGE, many of the Assassin's Creed games, Mortal Kombat X, Injustice, Street Fighter 5, most of the Battlefield games, Saints Row 2, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent, Devil May Cry HD Collection and many more. And it sucks because most of the video game developers does not consider PC players as a valuable as console players, saying that there is a lot of piracy on PC. But what they does not say is the fact that it is their fault of piracy becoming a thing, because if their video games were always great and prices for video games were always reasonable, then piracy would be none existent. But they are not willing to accept the truth and fix all that, and that is why we have to entertain ourselves the way we can. Thus why we have exclusive games too. Sure, those games are now becoming available to consoles too, but before this they were not. And I'm talking about games like original Stalker trilogy, Arma Armed Assault, Alien Shooter, Battlefield 2, Bet on Soldier Bloodsport, Collapse, Contract JACK, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Quake, Cryostasis and more.
This is probably the only game in existence that has been ported to dozens of consoles and hardware, even the Zeebo. But it didn't get a port on the Original XBox because the MS guy who met with mikami didn't bring a Japanese translator with him. Like wow.
All I remember is the lightening lighting up the enemies at night after you beat the lake monster in the gamecube version... I'm pretty the ps2 version doesn't even have lightening at that part. The gamecube version was really so far ahead of the ps2 version in the way it did the atmosphere.
Couple of questions you may know the answers to. 1. Why do the cutscenes (well 99%) when wearing outfit 2 (mobster) just use the normal outfit. 2. Does anyone know why only on a round 1 run of the game are there a group of Ganados above the rockface after you pass the bridge just before you enter the village for the first time?
Modders improved OG PC port with enhanced exe for longer runtime, they added texmod, HD project was amazing and they added mouse support. Capcom should be grateful to modders for improving the game. Also, RE5 needed Steam fix patch to make it playable.
I always played the GC version. It was the version I started with and ultimately stayed with. I fiddled around with the ps2,Wii, pc, ps3 versions but they just didn’t feel the same to me. I guess I’m just a sucker for nostalgia. I cannot tell you how much I played the GC version of RE4.
Insane to think the first Ninja Gaiden came out a few years earlier and ran at 60fps and looked like God coming out of my CRT, we had it so good bros...
Yeah, when I played it on PC back then, I hated it. Crappy controls and indeed the QTE's were a problem. There was a mouse mod, but that thing made it sadly not any better. The HD version back in 2014 or 2015 finally fixed it and made the game enjoyable.
Resident evil 4 was to good for been just in the Gamecube. My first console was the Gamecube and the first game my brother and I got was Resident 4, so any curiosity you may have about the game is pure gold.

Dont ehat people talking about but I played og pc version when i was kid and i absolutely loved it, i loves it so much that i palyed it non stop for years every week
Something is off in this video. What you've been showing from the PC release is not the vanilla PC unpatched version. The release version literally had no lighting. Everything was fully flat with no shadding.
2005-2011 was just generally a bad time for multiplatform titles on the PC. Narrow FoV's, weird 30fps locks and the weirder ones where they lock the internal resolution to the console's version (Dark Souls).
All things considered after the 1.1.0 patch was released there was a valid argument for the PC version being the definitive way to play the game at the time of its release. It ran at a consistent 30fps which is more that you could say about either console version, it had HD visuals, and there were even mods that integrated mouse support for aiming. It still had the numerical button prompts, the pre-rendered cutscenes , lower poly objects, and missing effects that the GameCube version had. But in the end it wasn't all that bad, at least until the future versions of RE4 came out on 7th, and eventually 8th gen consoles. But the 2014 PC port with the RE4HD project is without a doubt the way to go.
I fully agree. Interesting though, I couldn't find any decent mods for the original pc version. I used to play around with the mods and had a lot of fun. But it seems the 2014 Steam version has taken over the modding real estate.
All this comparisons of the different versions reminds me how i spent all my childhood playing PAL games and i only found out as an adult that NTSC games ran at faster framerate lol im so used to bad visuals and low fps i even used to play team fortress 2 on a potato laptop at about 20fps if i was lucky.

That's how I brute forced QTEs on the Wii version. You either had to waggle, or press A+B, so I just did both at the same time.
I actually like that the resolution of the PS2 port has that dreamy fuzziness to it.
My thoughts exactly. It reminds me of the VHS horror aesthetic, I really enjoy it for the atmosphere.
PS2 was pretty decent and the PC port was done by SourceNext which also did Breath of Fire 4, DmC3 and RE2-3 pc
Unless you are playing it in HD on an emulator, PS2 RE4 on a CRT TV looked fine back in the day.

@Demon_Curse what do you mean? I remember watching my brother play this and thought it was the scariest and coolest looking game on the PS2. @justchan2443 plenty of people knew. All because you were a kid living in a bubble doesn't mean it was unknown. TH-cam may not have existed, but magazines and gaming website did.

The Gamecube was so underappreciated at the time.
It was called a "kiddie" console by the edgy dudebros, but it introduced us to RE4, RE0, and RE remake. It also had ports RE 2, RE 3 and Code Veronica.
The Gamecube is legendary next to the 3DS as Nintendo’s best consoles (personal opinion). I’m typing this with a Switch sitting on my lap 😄
Outside of RE, Gamecube also had another horror masterpiece called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

I understand why people think the PS2 version of RE4 is the worst way to play it. But, it's still my favourite. I grew up playing it, that shitty graphics and dodgy gameplay might not fly in hindsight, but the nostalgia will never be beaten as far as I'm concerned.
I still now have a reason to be glad I’m a Nintendo fan that doesn’t relate to their great games (both published and developed by them, so Chibi-Robo and Luigi’s Mansion are equal in my eyes).
Yeah even if it’s worse the ps2 version had more content so of course the future ports were based off the one that sold much more than on GameCube.
Also I never knew RE4 originally started on GameCube, but damn playing the HD ports on PS4/5 looks way better than the PS2 version.
i mainly play re4 on the ps2. i think everything about it has it's charm as that's what i grew up with
I thought the ps2 version was the original until like 3 years ago, re4 on ps2 was my childhood and I'd imagine same with many more people, and with just how much more popular the ps2 was I'd imagine there's more people who thought it was the original too
Capcopm actually pledged 100% exclusivity for mainline RE titles on the Gamecube, which was, random but a real thing.

Sometimes gameplay is better than graphics.
Sure Ps2 didn’t look great… but I prefer Separate ways over GameCube graphics!
I played the original PS2 versions so much that I unlocked everything and even Professional difficulty became a cake walk
In fact, the NA GC version has its own (imo significantly worse) weapons stats and balancing.
the reasons why RE4 is so popular it was because of the PS2 port
It means the game is great :d@@LongSPGaming
About the lighting effects In PS2 port. Some areas like the merchant store (the one next to the place you fight El Gigante for the first time) had better light effects, similar to the GameCube.
the ps2 version could have been better in quality, the ps2 can do more, but capcom decided to compress the game as much as possible to make it fit on a 4.7gb dvd, and they could very well have used an 8.5gb dvd dual- layer, notice the separate ways cutscenes, they are super compressed, not in terms of size but in terms of bitrate, very low, and yes the ps2 can play videos above 480p.
The fact that for me, aiming with Keyboard is better instead of the Mouse is CRAZY

To get an accurate measurement of the AI and such it's best to play on professional.

That explains why Mikami said he would kill himself if the game ever releases on PS2

I think I am the only one back in 2005 played resident evil 4 on Gamecube
Best version I've played was on PS4. Addiction guaranteed!
I didn't care that the PS2 version was inferior in pretty much every way. I was just happy to be able to play the game.
I don't know the answers to those question. They are interesting questions though.
I've been asking myself that second question my whole life and to this day i wonder if it was intentional or just a bug

Got mad finishing the Professional mode in GameCube version and found out there's no P.R.L
